In Ruger Redhawk

This is the DA/SA, a large frame revolver that was first introduced in 1979 by Sturm, Ruger and Company. It is made of high quality steel and is available in stainless steel. The Redhawk is reinforced to withstand additional loads, making it very popular for loader use as it can handle both .45 Colt and .44 Magnum rounds. Additionally, the cylinder itself is longer than most competitors, allowing for longer overall lengths of ammunition to be loaded. This allows for either higher powder capacity, heavier (and therefore longer) bullets without sacrificing powder load, or a combination of both. Custom ammunition manufacturers even have cartridges made specifically for Ruger revolvers that may not fit in shorter chambers or weaker-design revolvers (such as the Smith & Wesson Model 29). This makes the Redhawk popular among hunters and trappers as a bear defense weapon.

Top 9: best revolvers for hunting

Whether you hunt with a handgun or just keep one on you for peace of mind, a revolver is the best, and sometimes only, handgun option in the woods. Compared to single-shot or semi-automatic pistols, revolvers offer adaptability and unmatched reliability, but which one should you choose?
A large number of models have been created specifically for hunting, and even more can be easily used to get food for yourself. Depending on what game you hunt and in what area, your choices and preferences may vary greatly.

Revolvers for hunting? Certainly!

Be that as it may, these 9 revolvers are considered the best among many shooters. To be fair, we decided to limit ourselves only to “serial” models, and not to expensive, custom-made ones in a single copy, with a price equal to both of your cars.

They must also provide the ability to hunt (or defend) large animals. If you've ever tried hunting with a handgun, most models will be familiar to you.

Malfunction

An older 1980's Ruger Redhawk Hunter in .44 Magnum with a custom scope.
In the mid-1980s, Ruger began receiving reports of Redhawk revolvers malfunctioning.[2] Some Redhawks have been reported to separate at the junction of the barrel and frame. At the time, it was not known why this was happening; The Redhawk has been on the market for many years without any problems reported, but Ruger decided to solve this problem by extending the frame 2.5 inches beyond the cylinder face to the end of the ejector rod to provide a solid surface into which to thread the barrel. [2] The extended frame also provided enough length to allow sight bases to be mounted on the frame rather than on the barrel, as was done on scoped versions of the Redhawk.[2] It was determined that the spacing of the barrels on the Redhawks was due to a change in the lubricant used when attaching the barrels to the frame, but by that time the new Super Redhawk design was already under development and the extended frame was retained.[2]

Ruger Redhawk and Super Redhawk

We knew right away that these two favorites would be the first to make our list, so there's no point in beating around the bush. These two revolvers, along with another pair of Ruger *hawks, remain very popular among hunters and trappers both as a primary weapon and as a means of self-defense when hunting big game.

The first large-bore double-action revolver produced by Sturm, Ruger & Co. — The Ruger Redhawk is a powerful revolver, made of high quality steel, easily withstanding the most powerful of Magnum cartridges. All this, coupled with its legendary reliability, has made it the favorite weapon of many shooters who load their own cartridges.

Ruger first introduced the Redhawk in 1979 and eight years later announced the Super Redhawk to replace its predecessors. Customers, however, loved the Redhawk's original aesthetics so much that Ruger continued production. The Super Redhawk comes in very large calibers such as .454 Casull and .480 Ruger. You can also easily install an optical sight on it.

In particular, the famous traveler Sir Ranulph Fiennes said that he took a Ruger Redhawk revolver with him on the Transglobe Expedition around the world and used it to shoot at a polar bear.

Smith & Wesson Model 629 Hunter

The Performance Center division of the famous American gun company Smith & Wesson does a pretty good job when it comes to high-quality, modern guns. And the Smith and Wesson Model 629 revolver is one of the best examples of this. Chambered in .44 Magnum, the 629 PC Hunter delivers impressive power and features a recoil-reducing muzzle brake to make second and subsequent shots even faster and more accurate—when you need them. Not all revolvers have an integrated Picatinny rail, which is another benefit for shooters who want to use their own scopes.

Magnum Research BFR

Magnum Research Big Frame Revolvers are designed for the biggest game or protecting hunters from the most dangerous animals. Of course, Magnum Research's famous Desert Eagle deserves its lion's share of the glory, but it's these Magnum revolvers that do most of the work. The company offers revolvers in calibers .30/30 Win, .44 Mag, .45 Long Colt/.410, .450 Martin, .454 Casull, .460 S&W, .480 Ruger/.475 Linebaugh, .500 S&W, and even . 500 JPH.

Alaskan revolver - compact, but with powerful cartridges - PHOTO

The Ruger Super RedHawk Alaskan revolver is manufactured by Sturm, Ruger & CO based on the Ruger Super RedHawk model, and is intended primarily for self-defense.
It differs from the base model in having a barrel shortened to 63 mm and in the absence of guides for mounting optical sights. The design of the RedHawk Alaskan is practically the same as the base model of the Super RedHawk - the reinforced frame is made of chrome-molybdenum stainless steel and does not have a detachable side wall, which leads to increased strength and rigidity.

The parts of the trigger and locking mechanism are made of hardened stainless steel, made in the form of blocks, which is convenient when disassembling the weapon and servicing it. The drum has 6 chambers, tilts to the left, the fixing cutouts on the drum are located between the chambers, in the thickest place.

The trigger mechanism is traditionally single-spring for Ruger revolvers - the hammer and trigger operate from different ends of the same spring, which reduces friction losses, increases reliability and makes the trigger softer.

Introduced in 2005, the Super RedHawk Alaskan was offered as a backup weapon that could provide its owner with reliable protection when hunting large and dangerous animals in Alaska, such as grizzlies. Initially, the model was offered in calibers .454 Casull and .480 Ruger, a modification was later released chambered for .44 Magnum, the least powerful of the Alaskan family. However, any hunter who has met a grizzly bear on the same trail knows that no matter how powerful the cartridge is, it will not be superfluous in this meeting.

Weapons for self-defense are usually purchased in the hope that they will never be used, but if they are to be used, they should reliably stop any attacker, be it a predatory animal or an intruder. The effectiveness of the RedHawk Alaskan is ensured by the use of very powerful cartridges in it, such as the .454 Casull.

The Ruger Super RedHawk Alaskan revolver is currently one of the few compact revolvers chambered for such powerful cartridges as .454 Casull and .480 Ruger, it is quite comfortable to carry and effective, its only drawback can be considered high recoil energy, so it is not uncommon for the owner to get rid of from this weapon after the first shots, giving preference to less “pugnacious” models of .44 Magnum caliber
