Development history
How was the Saiga MK-107 carbine created?
The description of the sample characterizes it as a modification of an improved version of the Kalashnikov assault rifle, developed in 1998. The prerequisite for the production of this model was the need to switch to firing with small-caliber cartridges, which made it possible to significantly increase the accuracy of fire. The specialists of the Izhevsk Machine-Building Plant, who were entrusted with the development of weapons, attempted to introduce a rather complex fire monitor design into the design. Despite the effectiveness of this solution, senior army leadership decided to abandon this option for financial reasons. As a result, the designers were entrusted with producing a cheaper alternative.
To create the Saiga MK-107 carbine, balanced automatics were subsequently used and, along with the ability to fire in single bursts, a system was introduced that opened up the possibility of firing in continuous bursts.
Despite the implementation of the tasks assigned to the developers, the Saiga MK-107 did not find proper application as a combat unit for arming army formations. Quite low demand for the model was observed both in the foreign and domestic markets.
Ultimately, the experts quite unexpectedly decided to reorient the production of the Saiga MK-107 carbine for civilian use. In particular, the target audience was to be athletes who competed in shooting disciplines. Thanks to the change in the design of weapons, the latter has become cheaper and more accessible to a wide mass of consumers. The main advantage of the model was the minimal recoil during firing, which made it possible to accurately shoot at stationary targets with controlled “deuces.”
Who created these versions of the carbine and what tests were carried out
Alexandrov and Paranin are considered to be the creators of the AK 107 and 108 series. Previously, they had successfully demonstrated and tested the AEK 971.
The AK 107 and 108 series are considered a modified AKM 74. The new weapon was equipped with an optimized receiver with a Picatinny rail for additional accessories. An adjustable diopter sight was installed. Now Kalashnikov assault rifles did not have a U-shaped sight.
A year later, testing of these two carbines began. The tests were successful. The “Ratnik” equipment set was equipped with this weapon.

Automation
Saiga MK-107 contains two gas pistons that are placed in a common cylinder and move towards each other.
The piston, which is in the rear position, is connected by a rod to the bolt frame. After firing the shot, the latter is retracted, and the front piston, connected to the bolt system by an elongated balancer, moves in the opposite direction. The counter movement of the bolt frame and the balancer is carried out due to the presence of a pair of gears that are placed in a statically fixed carriage and are in contact with the holes in the bolt frame rod.
The bolt return spring is placed in a stamped receiver, slightly offset relative to the axis of the weapon to the left. The barrel is locked by rotating the bolt through several lugs. The corresponding handles for performing this action are located on two sides of the bolt frame.

I still don’t understand why they chose the AK-12 and not the AK-107.
A few reasons.
The Ak-12 is a more widespread assault rifle, easier to manufacture, cheaper, half a kg lighter, more reliable (due to its simpler design), and of course there is a difference in the accuracy of fire, but not so critical. In general, the AK-12 is a relatively simple mass-produced machine gun to arm everyone, while the AK-107 is still a more highly specialized weapon, difficult to operate, expensive, etc. And by the way, instead of the 107th, along with the AK-12, they adopted the A-545 (a development of the AEK-971), also an assault rifle with balanced automatics, which is not inferior to the 107th in terms of accuracy, is a little lighter and has some other advantages. Reply | Reply with quote | Quote 0 Alfred 02/21/2017 17:40 Volkov Most likely you are right, but the 107 is much more accurate and there is almost no recoil. I can’t say anything about its reliability and have never seen it disassembled for cleaning, but I liked it better than the AK -12.

0 Tselin 02/21/2017 17:43 This assault rifle is a hybrid, or, to put it more simply, two combined ideas of the AK-12 assault rifle from the Kalashnikov concern and the AEK-971 assault rifle from the Degtyarev plant in the city of Kovrov, it even resembles in detail one and the other

In principle, I am interested in how widespread it is in the USA and how “in demand” it is.
If you mean the principle of balanced recoil, then in the USA they simply don’t exist yet. Izhmash is under sanctions and Saiga 107 is not available. My opinion is that with a good DTK (only really good one) and a light frame with a titanium piston, you can achieve that the AK7.62 will have a recoil of 223 , but 5.45 is like a small thing and there is no need to fence this complex and heavy garden.

0 Kirill 02/21/2017 17:53 Vickers, who in the video is a demigod in the US weapons world. His comments alone could ruin the company, just as EOtech collimators are now having huge problems. His training with special forces is #1 in popularity on his channel. Yes, he himself will pay to get into the bins of Russian weapons. By the way, it is very popular in the USA. Look at the sanctions on Izhmash and how sad they are for Saiga

0 November 02/21/2017 17:56 Any American can go to the store and buy an AK. And what about any Russian...???!!! Thanks to our government and gay laws. Which one of you knows how to shoot? What if there is a war? But the Americans can do everything and have a Kalash gun in every house. But here we are not people, but slaves. But slaves are not allowed weapons. What can I say in Russia, you can get 3 years in prison for a fucking knife. Although you can safely walk down the street with an ax wrapped in newspaper. Damn people, think about it, how fucking crazy are they to pass such laws? It's time to allow guns. Naturally, any prisoners and drug addicts should not sell it. Then there will actually be fewer attacks. Go over there in Texas and rob a store. Yes, the seller himself will fuck you there, and it’s not him, but any buyer will give you a gun and shoot you in the head.

0 Marat 02/21/2017 17:59 Due to sanctions, Russia does not sell Kalash to the USA. That’s why they opened the Kalashnikov USA plant, where they produce for their market.

In general, there has long been talk about interchangeability in firearms.
And all these symbioses lead precisely to this. At Kalash from Dektyar, at Dektyar from Kalash, etc. Reply | Reply with quote | Quote Update list of comments
