Description and technical characteristics of the Beretta pistol model M9

History of development and adoption

The Beretta-M9 pistol was created by the American company Bereta USA Corp. based on the legendary Italian Beretta model. The weapon was developed in the early 80s of the last century. Bereta USA Corp. participated in a competition for the best 9mm pistol for the US Air Force. In addition to this company, 3 more weapons manufacturers were developing a model for rearmament of the American military.

The new pistol was supposed to replace the legendary Colt-Browning M1911. The prototypes of all 4 competitors showed high accuracy and good firing range. However, they lost to the “veteran” in the test for wear and operation in adverse weather conditions.

In the mid-80s, the competition was held again. About 10 American gun manufacturers took part in the competition. The winner of the competition was the Beretta-M9 pistol. In 1990, this model was officially adopted by the US Army. Over the next 10 years, about a million pistols were produced for the needs of the American military at a price of $178 apiece. The Beretta M9 currently sells for $650 in the United States.

The Beretta M 92FS pistol is one of the most famous and recognizable in the world. It is used by the armies, police and special forces of many Western countries, and is very popular in the civilian arms market. Currently, more than 100,000 92 series pistols are produced annually in the world, both in Italy and under license in other countries. These weapons are produced in a large number of modifications, differing in size, design of the trigger mechanism and safety catch, as well as various types of materials and surface treatments used in production. In general, the Beretta M 92FS pistol has high combat and performance qualities.

Design work to create a new combat pistol for the Italian army in order to obtain a model that meets the new requirements for army short-barreled personal weapons began in 1970. At first, the creators of the pistol - Carlo Beretta, Giuseppe Masetti and Vittorio Valle worked on two prototypes, the main difference of which was the barrel bore locking system. The designers tested the locking systems of the German Walther P.38 and the Belgian FN Browning High Power. Serial production of the new pistol, designated 92, began in 1976.

From 1978 to 1985 Fabbrica d'Armi Pietro Beretta SpA participated in the famous American XM9 competition for a new 9 mm military pistol. Several new variants of the standard M 92S were created especially for this competition: Beretta M 92S-1, Beretta M 92SB and Beretta M 92SB-F. In the competition, Beretta defeated such competitors as: the American Colt SSP and Smith & Wesson M 459, the German Heckler und Koch models P9S, P7 and VP 70, the Belgian FN High Power and the Spanish Star 28M. The Beretta has become the new service pistol of the US Army.

The disadvantage of the M 92FS is the safety lever, which complicates the handling of the weapon, which is especially important for inexperienced users who do not have the opportunity to constantly train in handling and shooting. Users note the advantages of high quality workmanship, small, soft recoil, good weapon controllability, including high-speed shooting, high accuracy and reliability when using cartridges from different manufacturers with different types of bullets. The 9 mm cartridge used is quite effective and works well with the latest types of hollow point bullets, which can be combined with powerful powder charges in +P and +P+ cartridges.

Airsoft version of the Beretta M 92FS pistol

The BRT 92FS Auto air pistol from the Taiwanese manufacturer Gletcher is a very good copy of one of the most popular combat pistols of our time, the famous Beretta 92. According to many experts, this model is the best pneumatic copy of the original firearm, as it combines the maximum advantages that can be important for recreational shooting. The movable bolt of the pistol is equipped with a blowback function, that is, when you shoot, you feel the recoil, because the bolt, like a military weapon, rolls back. When the magazine runs out of balls, the bolt locks onto the slide stop, which also adds to the pistol’s resemblance to a firearm Beretta. The pistol is made entirely of metal, so it is quite heavy, weighing more than a kilogram (1100 grams), which adds to its charm. Pistol length 215 mm, barrel length 115 mm. The bore is smooth. The pistol fires on gas - CO2 (12 g cans). The initial speed of the ball shot is in the range from 110 to 130 m/s.

Separately, it is worth noting the precise operation of the trigger mechanism, the release is very predictable, and it is easy to shoot, including self-cocking. Although the self-cocking mode is practically not used, since when firing the shutter rollback automatically cocks the hammer, and with the hammer cocked it is even easier to shoot.

Gletcher's Beretta pistol has a full-size magazine similar in size to the original Beretta 92. The magazine holds 19 pellets and a CO2 cartridge. A distinctive feature here is also the method of feeding the ball into the barrel, when the ball from the magazine is fed only when the bolt rolls back, that is, for the first shot it is necessary to jerk the bolt, which only adds to the similarity of this weapon with the functionality of a real pistol.

The main distinguishing feature of this pistol is, of course, the ability to fire in bursts: on the frame there is a fire selector (also known as a fuse), which, in its lowest position, switches the pistol to full automatic mode, which is simply invaluable for recreational shooting.

Under the barrel of the pistol there is a Weaver/Picatinny rail on which a flashlight and/or laser can be attached.

Advantages and disadvantages of the Beretta M 92FS pistol, as well as user experience:

During the year of using the Beretta M 92 FS pistol, no shortcomings were identified . The pistol has proven itself to be very reliable. There were no breakdowns of the pistol itself either (although it was repeatedly dropped and used in different weather conditions - rain, snow), with the exception of a breakdown of the magazine, which began to “bleed” gas - but this is quickly and easily fixed in the service.

Among the advantages I would like to highlight the following:

+ the ability to fire in automatic or single mode ;

+ overall dimensions and weight characteristics identical to the original;

+ movable shutter;

+ Blowback system , which provides shutter movement to simulate recoil and make shooting more realistic;

+ double-sided fuse;

+ Weaver / Picatinny rail under the barrel for mounting a flashlight, laser laser or other accessories;

Description of the Beretta-M9 pistol

Externally, the Beretta-M9 is similar to the classic Beretta-92. True, the American model, unlike its Italian counterpart, is produced without human intervention. Weapons production in the United States is fully automated. "Beretta-M9" is a 9-mm caliber model, semi-automatic with a short barrel stroke, a lever locking device and a double-action trigger.

The top of the Beretta M9 consists of a frame and bolt with an unusually large window through which the steel barrel is visible. The frame is made of metal alloy. The shutter is made of steel. The bolt housing has the model name on it.

A non-adjustable rear sight is installed at the top, and opposite it is a front sight with a red dot. There is a fuse on the left and right of the frame near the trigger. The Beretta-M9 has a trapezoidal trigger guard and a classic, smooth-action trigger.

The pistol grip has plastic pads on both sides. Inside the handle there is a metal magazine for 10-15 shells. At the bottom there is an iron loop for a strap. Although the model is heavy, it is comfortable to hold in your hand.

Description of the Umarex Beretta M92 FS air pistol (nickel, wood)

This is a bullet gas-cylinder pneumatic pistol that fires 4.5 mm caliber bullets with an initial speed of 120 m/s (such information is given in the technical documentation). The pistol is manufactured in Germany and is equipped with a steel rifled barrel produced at an arms factory.

To check the validity of the data, the online store Popadiv10.ru fired shots from a Umarex Beretta M92 FS nickel wood pistol through a chronograph during the video review, the shooting was carried out with standard half-gram bullets, and you can see the results by watching our video below.

The body of the pistol is completely made of metal, due to this the pistol turned out to be quite heavy, exactly the same as a combat one, it weighs 1260 grams.

The source of energy in the Umarex Beretta M92 FS nickel wood pistol is a CO2 canister, which contains a 12 gram portion of gas. The pistol fires under outdoor air conditions from -5 to +50 degrees Celsius. One cylinder is enough for about 70 shots with the full power of the bullet.

The pistol uses a standard design for models produced in Germany, i.e. The cylinder is broken through and sealed using the lever/heel of the pistol magazine.

In order to get to the cylinder compartment of the pneumatic Umarex Beretta M92 FS, you need to remove the right handle pad; it folds back when you press a button simulating a magazine ejector. The key is located at the junction of the trigger guard and the handle and extends to the left side of the pistol.

The model uses a drum type holder; depending on the year of production, the delivery set includes 1 or 2 drums. The clip holds 8 bullets .

The drum is installed in a compartment inside the pistol body; to open the niche for the drum, you need to press a key that simulates the pistol's slide stop.

The Beretta 92 FS bullet gun uses a front sight and rear sight as an aiming device; the possibility of installing a standard laser center is not provided without a special adapter.

Assembly and disassembly

"Beretta-M9" consists of 65 parts. True, it is undesirable to disassemble a firearm down to the last screw. Usually, during disassembly, the top is separated from the bottom and the steel barrel is removed. The gun is usually disassembled before cleaning. Cleaning firearms with improvised cleaning agents (gasoline, acetone) is prohibited.

The process of disassembling the Beretta-M9:

  • on the left side of the pistol grip, press the magazine release button;
  • remove the magazine from the handle;
  • on the right side of the frame near the trigger guard, press the button (a metal pin should come out on the left);
  • lower the lever located above the extended pin;
  • separate the bolt from the frame;
  • frame with handle - monolithic structure (separating these parts is prohibited);
  • inside the bolt there is a barrel and a steel guide with a return spring;
  • remove the guide from the bolt, remove the spring;
  • pull the barrel out of the bolt;
  • Clean the elements with a special cleaning agent.

After cleaning the parts, the gun can be assembled. Reassemble the M9 in the reverse order of disassembly.

First, the barrel is inserted into the bolt, then the guide with the spring. After this, the top and bottom of the gun are connected. At the end, the magazine is inserted into the pistol grip.

Accessories

The Beretta-M9 kit includes only a pistol and a magazine. Accessories must be purchased separately. In the US, you can find a leather shoulder holster ($129) and a simple leather right-hand holster ($99). Accessories are made in black and brown. Some markets sell left-handed holsters. A spare magazine can be purchased for $30-$50. A new barrel costs $120. Plastic and rubber pads sell for $20-30, wooden pads for $50.

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages of the Beretta-M9 pistol:

  • accuracy of hitting the target from a distance of 50 meters;
  • clear and open sighting device;
  • comfortable pistol grip with pads;
  • double-sided safety (for the convenience of right-handers and left-handers).

Cons of the Beretta-M9:

  • gets dirty quickly (due to the open shutter);
  • the barrel gets very hot at the time of shooting (you can get burned);
  • The barrel is too short and is not suitable for installing a silencer.

Overall, the Beretta M9 is an easy to use and reliable pistol. It was this semi-automatic model that won a historic contract with the US military in the mid-80s. The US military has been purchasing the Beretta-M9 for two decades. The weapon performed well during the war in Iraq (in the hot desert conditions) and in Afghanistan (in the cold alpine climate). The Americans gave him the name “World Defender”.

Beretta-M9 has been tested for reliability and durability. The model is designed for 35,000 shots. The gun will work properly if it is accidentally dropped into sand or snow, or thrown onto asphalt or concrete. It is comfortable for left-handed and right-handed people, men and women to shoot from it. The pistol is distinguished by its shooting accuracy from a distance of 50 meters. The latest modifications of the Beretta-M9 have a Picatinny rail (under the barrel) and an extended barrel.
