The well-known pistol Guard MP 461 is the only traumatic product of the IzhMekh company. This pistol has a unique design that gun lovers will immediately recognize. Due to its qualities, power and ease of use, this type of weapon has been very popular for 10 years. Why consumers continue to use the Guardian, what they like most about it and what shortcomings they should always remember - in our article today.
Self-defense weapon: pistol Strazhnik MP-461
The Strazhnik MP-461 barrelless pistol and its cartridges are currently classified as firearms of limited destruction.
The Guardian MP-461 barrelless pistol was designed in 2002 at the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant. The main goal of developing this pistol was to create the most compact and lightweight, but at the same time the most effective self-defense weapon, within the framework of current legislation. The Guard MP-461 pistol is a direct competitor to the Osa complex and, in particular, to the Aegis PB-2 pistol. The barrelless traumatic pistol Guardian MP-461 is loaded with only two cartridges, unlike the four-shot Wasp, and uses the same 18x45 cartridges as PB pistols, traumatic and light-sound action, as well as signal ones.
The most important advantage of the barrelless traumatic pistol Strazhnik MP-461 in comparison with Osa pistols is its compactness, namely, the weapon’s significantly thinner thickness and lighter weight. As a result, the Strazhnik MP-461 barrelless pistol is much more convenient for constant concealed carry. However, the New Weapons Technologies company is currently producing a pistol that is more compact than the pistols of the BP-4 complex, the two-shot Egida PB-2. The Aegis pistol differs from the Guardian by being 3 mm smaller in width and 16 mm shorter in height, which is quite a lot for a weapon of this class.
The disadvantage of the Guard MP-461 pistol is the small capacity of the chamber block - only 2 rounds. Of course, reloading by simply changing blocks can be done quickly enough, but under stress during self-defense, the owner may need too much time to change blocks. This is a serious drawback that must be taken into account.
To ensure safety in handling, the design of the Strazhnik pistol has a manually controlled mechanical safety, made in the form of a transverse button on the trigger, which blocks the trigger in the on position. The fuse is turned on when the button is pressed to the right, the fuse is turned off when the button is moved to the left. This unit, of course, makes handling the pistol safer, but at the same time it is also a disadvantage of this weapon. When using the Guard MP-461 pistol for self-defense in a stressful situation, the owner, especially an inexperienced one, may simply forget to turn off the safety, wasting precious seconds remembering whether he turned on the safety and even where it is located on the pistol.
During factory tests, the Strazhnik MP-461 barrelless pistol was tested for reliable operation in rain, high humidity, high and low temperatures. According to the manufacturer, the gun worked flawlessly. In addition, the Guard was tested for strength when dropped from a height of 2 meters onto concrete. The weapon also passed this test.
Features of treatment
Just like the Wasp, the Guard cannot be loaded with both shock and traumatic cartridges at the same time. To effectively fire a shock cartridge, the weapon must be aimed at the villain's face from a distance of less than a meter. The use of a traumatic cartridge is allowed only on the body and from a distance of more than a meter.
The pistol is designed in such a way that if the first cartridge cannot fire, that is, it is defective or simply does not exist, or it has already been used, the second cartridge will fire. If you use the first shock cartridge, and the second traumatic one, and for the first shot the gun is aimed at the villain’s face, you can kill him. If the shock cartridge misfires, the traumatic cartridge will fire. Point-blank in the head.
The number of weapons created for the 18x45 cartridge turned out to be very small, these are “Osa”, “Cordon” and “Guardian”. The design idea found a loophole in the laws. Mass production of gas pistols capable of firing traumatic bullets began. Samples were created by remaking old pistols stored in warehouses.
By 2011, muzzle energy began to reach 300 J, approaching combat standards. It was much more profitable, because the old pistols were intended for recycling and were worth nothing. It is impossible to convert existing pistols to fire the 18x45 cartridge due to its size and ignition characteristics.
From the point of view of real self-defense, weapons using the 18x45 traumatic cartridge are much preferable to pistols and revolvers of 9 mm caliber. The bullet is heavy, slow and has a large area of impact on the target. As a result, during the flight, the bullet loses less of its kinetic energy in flight.
When hitting a target, a large bullet has a larger impact area. The specific pressure per unit area is on average two times less than that of a 9 mm bullet; it does not reach 0.5 J per mm/sq. A large bullet has a minimum penetrating effect and a maximum concussive effect. There are a lot of criminal cases related to the use of small-caliber traumatic weapons, since bullets have a high penetrating value. At the same time, there are reviews of self-defense, when the villain received penetrating wounds, but continued the attack.
Description of the barrelless pistol Guard MP-461
Barrelless firearm of limited destruction Strazhnik MP-461 is a weapon with a block of two chambers with their vertical placement. The cartridge case is used as the barrel. The Guard MP-461 pistol is loaded with a chamber block (cassette) for two rounds. The block is loaded with cartridges when it is disconnected from the pistol body, the same applies to removing spent cartridges. The chamber block is held to the pistol frame by a cross pin in the frame and by cutouts in the front of the block. The chamber block latch is located at the top of the handle.
To disconnect the chamber block, you need to press the latch forward and up and turn the block with the back side up, separating it from the pistol frame. The Guardian MP-461 barrelless pistol has non-adjustable open sights, which are located in the upper part of the chamber block. The trigger mechanism of the barrelless traumatic pistol Strazhnik MP-461 is of electronic type. It is powered by two CR 2032 lithium batteries located in the pistol grip.
The manufacturer of the Guardian states that the battery life of the set of batteries reaches 10,000 shots. A special feature of the Strazhnik pistol trigger is that the contacts of the ignition device come into contact with the cartridge primers only when the trigger is pressed. The result is a higher level of security. You can control the battery charging using the LED located on the left side of the pistol frame. The LED turns on when you press the button next to it.
Currently, the barrelless rubber pistol Strazhnik MP-461 is certified as a firearm of limited destruction.
Purchase
You can buy MP-461 “Guard” for 8-10 thousand rubles. Hand-held weapons can be purchased for approximately 3-4 thousand rubles. To purchase a pistol, you need a personal weapons license.
18x45 cartridges are expensive. All types of cartridges cost about 90 rubles apiece. Traditionally, shock cartridges are more expensive; they cost about 100 rubles apiece. Considering the low cost and light weight of the weapon, you can fill the small magazine by purchasing a second pistol. The law allows you to own two units of trauma. The price and weight of two guards will be less than any cool barrel.
Owner reviews
“Minus: only two rounds, average bullet energy, very uncomfortable recoil. Pros: fast reloading (especially compared to Osa), high reliability, small size, ultra-low weight, very comfortable ergonomics, very good suitability for shooting offhand (you don’t have to use sights at all, point and shoot), ideally suited for wearing by a person, not those who want to think too much. A typical self-loading pistol requires chambering a round and wondering if the hammer is cocked? Or lowered? Or pre-cocked? What is better - with the safety on and with the safety cocked or with the safety off but with the safety released? There is no such question here. In addition to traumatic cartridges, there are light-sound and signal ammunition; in my only case of use, it was the light-sound that was useful, effectively stopping the attacker.” Ilya Ershov
Ammo
The 18x45 cartridge was created in 1999 as part of the Osa weapons complex.
There are several types of 18x45 cartridges, which are produced by different manufacturers:
- A shock cartridge that produces a loud sound and a bright flash. It repeats in miniature the effect of a flash-noise grenade. Its use is especially effective in the dark. You must close your eyes before shooting.
- A signal cartridge that launches a red, green or yellow rocket to a height of up to 120 meters. Can be used as incendiary bullets.
- The light socket produces a white, bright light and illuminates a circle with a diameter of about 20 meters.
- The fireworks cartridge releases multi-colored fireworks to a height of 50-60 meters.
- The gas cartridge is charged with a mixture of red pepper.
- The practical cartridge is intended for practical sports shooting. It has a 4 gram bullet with a muzzle energy of 40 J.
- Traumatic cartridges at different times had a bullet made of cast rubber, rubber with steel shavings, and rubber with a steel core.

Design
- The Guardian traumatic pistol is a weapon that consists of a block of two chambers mounted vertically. The role of the barrel is played by the cartridge case.
- The weapon is loaded with a cassette that holds 2 rounds. At the same time, it is loaded with cartridges while the cassette is disconnected from the base of the weapon, the same applies to the removal of spent cartridges. The cassette is attached to the weapon frame with a pin and thanks to cutouts in the front of the block itself. Its latch is located on top of the handle.
- To remove the cartridge with the chamber, you need to press the latch and turn the block with the back side up, thus separating it from the frame of the weapon.
- The traumatic pistol has non-adjustable aiming devices located on top of the cartridge with the chamber.
- The USM is electronic. It is powered by 2 CR2032 elements, which are located in the handle of the weapon.
The manufacturer states in the passport that the battery life is 10 thousand shots. A feature of the firing mechanism is that the ignition contacts touch the ammunition primers only when the trigger is pressed. As a result, it was possible to ensure the maximum degree of safety. You can control the battery charge thanks to a diode located on the left side of the weapon frame. The diode is turned on by pressing the key located next to it.
Today, the barrelless traumatic Strazhnik on the territory of the Russian Federation is defined as a firearm of limited action.

First games
The low popularity of the model at first was due, rather, not to the two-charge nature, but to the shortcomings that the first batches had. They were deprived of the upper visor, which serves to fix the upper cartridge cartridge. Without it, the upper charge shifted slightly when the lower one was fired, and the contacts could no longer reach the cartridge case. In fact, this made the pistol single-shot. As it turned out later, such a serious problem was due to the simple inattention of the developers and the lack of serious factory testing of the weapon.

The second problem was the low battery life. Initially, the Strazhnik was equipped with one battery, but in practice this turned out to be not enough. In the event of oxidation of the contacts, the charge was completely insufficient for normal operation. As a result, manufacturers began to equip the model with two batteries.
Another flaw was the unsuccessful “ears” for attaching the cassette. When fired, they received a serious load, as a result of which they quickly failed. This problem was also solved, but not immediately.
