Traumatic pistol Taurus Lom-13, description and technical properties with photos and videos

The largest Brazilian arms concern, Forjas Taurus SA, is creating the popular Taurus LOM-13. The pistol uses 9 mm PA as ammunition. The Taurus LOM 13 traumatic pistol was developed on the basis of the Taurus Model 905, which is used by police officers and ordinary citizens as a concealed carry weapon. This gun is based on a unique design, a comfortable handle and a small external drum for 5 rounds.

Self-defense weapon: Taurus LOM-13 revolver

The Taurus LOM-13 revolver is currently classified as a firearm of limited destruction

The Taurus LOM-13 revolver (Torus LOM-13) is produced by one of the largest arms concerns Forjas Taurus SA (Brazil). This revolver uses the popular 9mm RA traumatic action pistol cartridge. The LOM-13 traumatic revolver is designed based on the compact Taurus Model 905 combat revolver, which fires 9mm Parabellum pistol cartridges and is used as a primary or backup concealed carry weapon by both police and civilians. The Taurus LOM-13 revolver has a small outer diameter drum with a capacity of five rounds, a compact and ergonomic rubber grip, and a modern design.

Both the frame and the drum of the Taurus LOM-13 revolver are made entirely of steel, without any reduction in its strength. The surfaces are polished followed by bluing, the upper part is made matte to eliminate glare during aiming. The frame of the Taurus LOM-13 has no protruding parts, which makes it easier to both extract and everyday use of the weapon. The drum and barrel are non-removable, which is done to prevent this revolver from being adapted for firing live ammunition with hard bullets.

The drum of the Taurus LOM-13 revolver is equipped with plate clips, which significantly speed up the process of loading and reloading the revolver. The barrel is made as a single piece, without the use of any inserts. The trigger mechanism is double-action and allows firing both by self-cocking and with pre-cocking of the hammer. The Taurus LOM-13 is equipped with a forward-sliding drum lock located on the left side of the frame just behind the drum, and a removable right frame wall. The trigger for the Taurus LOM-13 revolver has only coil springs. The most powerful of them is the trigger spring, also known as the mainspring. The trigger spring is noticeably shorter and weaker. The force is transmitted to the trigger through a special pusher. The use of a coiled trigger spring somewhat complicates the design due to the use of a pusher and its stop, but greatly increases the reliability of the unit.

The traditional use of ring springs with antennae reduces both the area of contact of the trigger with the axis and can lead to breakage of such a spring: its operational strength is much lower than that of a coiled one. The use of a coiled mainspring also has a positive effect on operational reliability, but unlike the leaf springs of the American Smith & Wesson and Colt, it does not allow adjusting the cocking force. Although for compact revolvers such adjustment is not vital, since the sights are rudimentary and the barrel is very short, because this revolver is designed for concealed carry. By definition, compact revolvers are not designed for precision shooting at paper targets. Their main purpose is self-defense.

The LOM-13 revolver is not equipped with any mechanical safeties, which complicate the handling of the weapon, especially for inexperienced and insufficiently regularly trained owners. However, LOM-13 has one interesting feature that is typical for revolvers of this type, which means “Taurus Security System”. It consists in the location of the well of a special lock located on the back side of the trigger. When the lock is turned with a special key (it is included in the delivery set of the revolver in the amount of 2 pieces), the borehole rises by about 1 mm and does not make it possible to cock the hammer, thereby blocking the revolver from firing a shot. When the trigger mechanism is locked, the revolver can be loaded and unloaded, but it cannot be fired.

The Taurus LOM-13 revolver can use the entire range of 9mm RA traumatic action cartridges, which are very popular in Russia. - These are noise, gas and traumatic cartridges with a rubber bullet. The sights are not adjustable, without protruding parts. They consist of a front sight made integral with the barrel with a transverse notch and a rear sight, which is a longitudinal groove in the upper surface of the revolver frame. The weapon is brought into normal combat mode at the factory. All revolver controls are accessible to the thumb and index fingers of both hands. Pulling the trigger and cocking the hammer is equally comfortable with both the right and left hands. Access to the drum lock button is optimized for the right thumb. To release the drum while holding the revolver in your left hand, you need to move your thumb from the right to the left side of the frame.

When the cylinder is folded back, the revolver's trigger is blocked. When the hammer is cocked, it is also impossible to tilt the drum back. Taurus engineers found a compromise solution in the area of the optimal combination of ergonomics and compactness, using a fairly wide, but short and flat handle shell with recesses for two fingers of the holding hand. The shell itself is made of rubberized polymer. Its texture and grooves for the fingers allow the shooter to securely hold the revolver when shooting even with one hand. In the middle part, the shell of the handle has a thickening, which, when holding the weapon, does not allow it to “sink” in the hand or, conversely, to fall out.

Ease of handling weapons and constant combat readiness are the hallmarks of a modern revolver. You can argue as much as you like about the high reliability of pistols and the advantages of modern models, but in the case of traumatic weapons this is not the case, due to the ammunition used. The energy of the produced traumatic cartridges 9mm R.A. ranges from 34 to 80 Joules. Not a single self-loading pistol can cope with such a power dispersion, of course, if the owner sets a similar task for his weapon. And even if it does, it will not work correctly with any ammunition.

Versatility is one of the most important qualities of a revolver. Depending on the goals set, the LOM-13 revolver allows loading and firing with the entire range of currently produced 9mm RA traumatic cartridges. It's no secret that sometimes you can get defective or expired cartridges, which, when fired, do not achieve the required pressure. In this case, the rubber ball may get stuck in the barrel and the next shot will either disable the weapon or tightly clog the barrel bore, making further shooting impossible. The exit hole for the rubber bullet in the drum of the LOM-13 revolver is only 5.5 mm. Inside the chamber of the drum, when fired, a pressure is reached that can push the rubber bullet out of the chamber and accelerate it further in the barrel. If there is insufficient pressure, the bullet simply will not be able to leave the drum chamber, thereby protecting the shooter from weapon failure.

The LOM-13 revolver, thanks to its high operational strength and long service life, constant combat readiness, operational reliability, patented barrel and cylinder design, high shooting accuracy, as well as compactness and ease of use for constant concealed carry, is currently one of the best revolvers in Russia self-defense weapon market and an excellent choice as a primary traumatic weapon for keeping at home or for concealed carry.

The import of the Taurus LOM-13 revolver to Russia was stopped on June 30, 2011. The Taurus LOM-13 is certified as a limited-kill firearm.

Popular models

Among the popular Taurus models, the most popular products are the Raging Bull series:

  • Model 416;
  • Model 444;
  • Model 454;
  • Model 500.

This weapon is intended for a large caliber (indicated in the name of the revolver).

The demand for such models is due to the fact that this type of Taurus is so powerful that it is suitable for hunting wild animals. Due to the increase in caliber, the developers of this series strengthened the design of the revolvers by adding a heavy bar at the bottom for ventilation.

The second popular model is Judge. This is a large-caliber revolver that can fire weapon cartridges without changing the barrel. This feature is typical only for products of the Brazilian brand. Judge with a rifled barrel can shoot:

  • buckshot;
  • spherical bullets;
  • fraction.

The Judge can be loaded simultaneously with rifle and pistol cartridges, allowing for close to medium range shooting. This revolver's frame and barrel are a single structure, machined on a milling machine from a single piece of metal. The Judge is designed to withstand up to 3 times its design muzzle energy. This feature is also common to other Taurus products.

Both lines of revolvers include several modifications of military weapons. The difference between the versions is only in the type of caliber of bullets with which the drum can be loaded, and the presence of additional options (the ability to install a sight and others).

Reviews from Taurus LOM-13 owners

“In double-action mode, the nature of the trigger is long and smooth, with a force of about 7 kg, comparable in sensations to the self-cocking trigger of a Makarov combat pistol with a carefully adjusted trigger. The nature of the trigger in single action mode is very short with a force of about 1.5 kg. — the descent is almost not felt. When the trigger is pre-cocked, the trigger is similar in nature to the factory Remington-870 - just as short and soft. Sights: very low front sight and a slot in the upper part of the frame. Obviously, the sight is not optimized for high-precision shooting, but for the convenience of concealed carry, however, it is easier to aim through such a slot than at the mechanical sighting devices of the OSA PB4M, PB4V or PB4-1 series pistols, of which I have generally successfully and repeatedly hit targets at distances up to 48 meters. It’s a pity that the ballistics of even the “evil” 9 PA cartridge will not allow effective fire at such a distance.

Such an important parameter for rubber weapons as the service strength and durability of the structure will be established based on the results of operation. So far, according to available information, the strength is more than sufficient. Another fetish of rubber shooters - the hardness of steel has not yet been measured, but according to information from the importer, the heat treatment of the revolver parts is completely identical to the “ancestors” - models 905 and 85. The main difference between the LOM-13 revolver and firearms models that are widespread outside the borders of our Motherland is the design of the drum , which has a narrowing of up to 5 mm at the outlet and a barrel design that has a diameter of 5.5 mm, while the breech of the barrel is expanded to 8 mm.

The existing barrel design meets existing criminal requirements to prevent firing a solid object from a revolver without making irreversible alterations to the main parts. I would like to dwell on this point in more detail. The author of these lines already had experience owning two “gas revolvers with the ability to fire a rubber bullet,” but the samples that existed before the advent of the LOM-13 did not fundamentally satisfy me with the barrel design. And it’s not about joules and millimeters: I just think that the barrel of a firearm should be inside or smooth, like a mirror-polished tube, or have rifling with one pitch or another.

This invention of domestic gunsmiths and experts from certifying bodies as “teeth” may seem to some to be a beautiful solution to this or that problem, but in my understanding, in principle, nothing more unnatural than the impact of an accelerating bullet on an asymmetrically located obstacle in the barrel can exist. The LOM-13 is a pleasant exception - the barrel is as it should be - a cylinder. This raises the question of the adequacy of the chosen barrel diameter - is 5.5 mm a lot or a little? As the shooting below showed, that’s enough. But first things first.

The first reviews from LOM-13 owners showed that a short-barreled revolver with a smooth bore, and even chambered for domestic cartridges, is unlikely to compare in accuracy with a rifled pistol chambered for a real bullet. However, in my modest experience, it turned out that the LOM-13 works quite at the level of other rubber arrows. Not the best, but not the worst option either. So, shooting. I was able to purchase 9 PA traumatic ammunition in seven types from three major manufacturers. Techkreem remained outside the scope - it just didn’t work out. All series on round targets were carried out from a distance of slightly more than (to guarantee) five meters, shooting was carried out standing hand-held, at a calm pace (1 shot per second) with a preliminary cocking of the trigger.

Of the five shots, three landed in the center of the target in a circle with a diameter of about 10 cm, the total spread of five bullets was almost on an A4 sheet - more than 20 centimeters. Sparks were observed during firing, and the weapon was heavily smoked after firing. All five cartridges are longitudinally torn from the muzzle by 15 mm (this is about 2/3 of the length of the cartridge case!). Extracting spent cartridges is difficult - you have to hit the extractor rod with a handy object. On the last fifth shot, the cartridge case also swelled along its length, so turning or throwing out the drum became problematic. One series of five shots was fired. Previously, I also shot a pack of “Killer” 80J cartridges with a white bullet from the same manufacturer. The result is completely similar. My opinion is that, given the rupture of cartridges, it is unsafe to shoot such KSPZ cartridges and is not recommended unless absolutely necessary.

Five shots came in the center with a uniform spread, fitting into a circle of about 13 cm. After the shot, the cartridge case was heavily smoked. There are no breaks in the sleeve, but the rolling is unevenly opened. There are no problems with extraction. Two series of five shots were fired. It seems to me that such cartridges can be used for bashing if the accuracy is considered satisfactory for the task at hand.

After each shot, the bullet gets stuck in the narrowing of the drum, after which it must be knocked out with a pin, applying considerable effort. All the energy of the powder gases flies back between the cartridge case and the walls of the drum chamber, and the shot seems weak as cotton. One series of five shots was fired. THE SPECIFIED CARTRIDGES CANNOT BE USED IN THE LOM-13 REVOLVER!

It hits the center. A group of four bullets fits into 7-9 cm, but in any group there is a gap with which the total accuracy ranges from 13 to 20 centimeters. The shot is relatively loud, the cartridges are intact, without signs of swelling or ruptures, and are flared evenly.

Three series of five shots were fired. These cartridges can be fully recommended as training cartridges.

STP to the right and above the aiming point by 14 centimeters. It is still difficult to determine the reason for such a separation; it is unlikely that the shooter made a mistake - apparently this is a feature of the specified revolver when using more powerful cartridges. A group of three bullets fits within 3-4 cm, but in any group there are two separations, with a total accuracy of 12 centimeters. The shot is loud, the cartridges are intact, without signs of swelling or ruptures, and are flared evenly. Two series of five shots were fired. These cartridges can be recommended as training cartridges or for carrying for self-defense.

STP is also 8 centimeters to the right and above the aiming point. Two series of five shots were fired at green pistol target number 4. The size of the group of 7 out of 10 hits is 8 centimeters, 10 out of 10 fit into a circle of 16 centimeters.

  1. KSPZ "Training" 34J batch A03. Bimetal sleeve, black ball.
  2. Refinery batch F04-04-09 50J in a bimetallic sleeve.
  3. AKBS “Sports” PP9RP lot 02 053 10 dated 04.2010 in a brass sleeve with a black ball coated with something silver.
  4. AKBS “Standard” PP9RP lot 01 057 10 dated 04.2010 in a brass sleeve with a black/silver ball.
  5. AKBS "Magnum" PP9RP lot xx xxx xx dated 04.2010 in a brass sleeve with a black/silver ball.
  6. AKBS "Magnum" INNA Tanfoglio PP9RP lot 01 109 03 dated October 2009 in a steel sleeve with a black ball 0.8 g.
  7. AKBS "Magnum" INNA Tanfoglio PP9RP lot 02 065 10 dated 04.2010 in a brass sleeve with a black/silver ball.

STP is 7 centimeters to the right and 8 to 12 centimeters above the aiming point. The best group of five met within 45 mm (!!!) However, this was rather a successful exception - the rest of the groups were the same size, but there were always one or two separations, worsening the overall result to 10-12 cm. Shots from INNA Tanfoglio Magnum cartridges are very loud, there is a strong flash, but the cartridges are intact, without signs of swelling or ruptures, they are flared strongly and evenly, judging by the marks on the primer - the pressure is much higher than with previous types of cartridges. Two series of five shots were fired. Additionally, 10 shots were also fired at green pistol target number 4. The upward and to the right movement is the same. 9 out of 10 hits fit into a 17cm circle. Personally, I will continue to use only the specified type of ammunition for training and carrying.

Traumatic revolver Taurus LOM-13

Since the best results were achieved with Magnum cartridges from AKBS, I shot several series with them at speed with fast reloading, unfortunately, without a timer. I note that self-cocking is indeed very soft, while the trigger stroke is short and smooth. As a result, five self-cocking cartridges are precisely fired at a speed comparable to a pistol. Reloading for a while is very fast and confident, so you can get a fire density close to that of a pistol! Accuracy during high-speed shooting is still within the dimensions of an A4 sheet. I can probably shoot more accurately - I’ll practice more. In terms of power, it has not been possible to time it yet, but according to the experience of respected colleagues from the forum, you can safely count on a speed of 500-600 fps with Magnum cartridges.

So, let's summarize. We have the first traumatic revolver with a smooth barrel. The revolver is ergonomic, compact, very durable and very reliable. In terms of ballistic characteristics (speed, power), it is similar to pistols of the MP-79-9T family, however, greater reliability out of the box and a more attractive appearance make it the optimal weapon for those who want to spend long winter evenings in shooting practice or reading weapons periodicals , and not in the selection of springs, sealing pressures or warranty repairs of blown barrels. Compared to a pistol, revolvers have, it seems to me, two fundamental disadvantages: the difficulty of reloading and the impossibility of quickly deactivating the weapon, for example, when you come to visit and are forced to put the weapon away for temporary storage.

With a self-loading pistol, both problems are solved by an easily removable detachable magazine, and in addition, the pistol can be easily temporarily deactivated by setting the safety. A revolver in this regard is more dangerous and insidious - being loaded, it is constantly ready for combat, and any pressing of the trigger will cause a shot, and if the weapon is discharged by removing cartridges from it, charging back takes longer. In the Taurus-905 and its traumatic version, both problems are elegantly solved: reloading is simplified as much as possible due to interchangeable clips for five rounds, and temporary deactivation of the weapon is possible by turning on the built-in safety on the trigger, operated by the included keys.

So perhaps we really have the “best of all worlds”, combining all the advantages of the most advanced examples of modern short-barreled weapons. Personally, I see the LOM-13 as a replacement for my well-deserved OSE PB-4M, and such a comparison is very logical. Ammunition and energy are comparable. The Taurus revolver is a little heavier and formally larger than the OSA, but as the experience of wearing the LOM-13 for a week has shown, it is a pocket weapon and therefore, with the proper equipment, can be carried in the same ways as are usual for the OSA (behind the belt, in the pocket of outerwear, on the ankle). All algorithms for working with the revolver are close to OSE - no jerking of the bolts, feed delays or unejected cartridges.

The revolver only has five rounds, but it's a guaranteed five rounds. At the same time, reloading will be faster, since the weapon is more ergonomic and, importantly, stronger - a strong blow to the cartridge will not break the latch. What shortcomings are immediately visible in LOM-13? Honestly, I don’t see them like that yet. Yes, I would like to have the accuracy at the level of my Remington-700 SPS Tactical, and the stopping effect like 12/76. However, to be realistic, we have the maximum that can be squeezed out of a traumatic weapon under 9 PA while complying with Russian legislation. From what I would like: I would like a stainless steel option and, as a separate spare part, a trigger without a spoke - when carried in a pocket, it is clearly in the way, and the effectiveness of self-cocking shooting, as it seems to me, is quite sufficient for self-defense.”

General description of Taurus

The pistol is based on the Italian Beretta weapon, but the Taurus, due to its convenience, safety, reliability, accuracy, firepower and, most importantly, having many options for different needs, is very popular. Thanks to this, the company has exported these weapons to foreign countries, and the main market is the United States.

All Taurus models are subject to the following requirements:

  • high level of security;
  • excellent accuracy;
  • firepower;
  • high-quality assembly.

The company achieved popularity in 1977, when it bought 40 thousand Berreth revolvers and launched its production in Brazil. When the contract expired, Taurus, having bought the rights, continued producing weapons, but of its own production and with the designation PT-92 (Pistola Taurus 92).
