Barrelless traumatic pistol Osa PB-4, Compact and Aegis, properties of the weapon, is a permit required to carry it?

The Osa PB-4 barrelless pistol is made as a weapon for the self-defense of ordinary people. The engineers were faced with the task of creating an effective type of weapon that would meet all legal requirements. Especially for this, not counting the gun itself, special 18x45 cartridges with a bullet diameter of 15.5 mm were developed. Because the developers’ desire to connect the barrel and cartridges did not subside, they had to electronically ignite the powder charge. This also limits the introduction of live ammunition on this barrelless weapon.

The main feature of the cartridges of this gun were the long cartridge cases and thick walls. The bullet was located in the case body and did not protrude beyond its muzzle. To protect the bullet from rearmament, an aluminum cup was built inside the cartridge case. The functions of an igniter primer and a powder charge were assigned to this cup. To change the bullet, there was no need to create a shot; for this it was enough to damage the primer. The main feature of the Osa complex is the absence of a barrel; its role is played by the cartridge case.

History of Osa modernization

The Osa barrelless pistol has undergone four major modernizations over the history of its existence, each of which introduced something new and unique into it. The very first version of the gun did not have a system for electronic ignition of the powder charge; it was reproduced using a magnetic pulse generator, which is known to many under the name “MIG”.

In 2000, the PB-4M saw the light of day, which became a real creation of weapons design. At first, this was justified by a new electrical circuit for selecting a cartridge ready for firing, the basis of which was interaction with the primer. The clever circuit is able to recognize when a shot has already been fired and when there is no charge in the chamber. Thus, current was passed only in this case, when the charge was ready to fire. The circuit worked instantly after pressing the trigger. After the shot, the circuit was engaged in scanning the subsequent chamber for the presence of a warhead ready for firing. She herself determined the malfunction of the capsule or the absence of a cartridge and continued the search until she found a charge ready for use. The company's management really liked this engineering idea, the consumer also rated it with the highest rating, as a result of which permission was given to install the circuit in the following guns of the Osa complex.

In 2003, the company released an updated version of the barrelless pistol - PB-4-1. This modification received a new laser designator and a redesigned handle. It became more modern and comfortable, the pistol no longer flew out of the hands during shooting. In addition, in order to maintain the smooth operation of the ignition and target designator, the old generator was replaced with a modern lithium battery.

PB-4-1 ML, which is the latest version of the Wasp, entered production in 2005. It is based on minor configurations. In its design, engineers returned a magnetic pulse generator, whose forces were used to power the ignition of the powder charge. The battery was now responsible for the operation of the laser target designator. Combat properties have not been changed.

In addition to these universally recognizable modifications of this barrelless pistol, which were intended only for civilians, she developed options for law enforcement agencies and the army. These include the PB-4V, which was equipped with a swivel and a mechanical sight, and the PB-4-2, which was loaded with stronger 18.5x70 cartridges and had a muzzle energy of around 100 J.

The era of traumatic weapons in Russia is coming to an end.

It is a fact. Despite the emergence of new interesting specimens, interest in “trauma” is close to extinction.

Logical

and the expected continuation of the topic of civilian short-barreled weapons could be permission to own normal pistols and revolvers. This has not yet happened, despite the possibility of owning a sporting short barrel.

Traumatic pistol
"Egida PB-2"

This

this is already quite good, although such “ownership” ends at the exit from the doors of the shooting club.
To add to all the misfortunes, a few years ago a restriction on the number of “trauma” weapons was added: instead of 5 units, it is now allowed to have no more than 2 “barrels” in one hand. "Aegis PB-2"

In some

At the moment, weapons forums were overflowing with advertisements for the sale of traumatic weapons. The situation was not saved either by signal modifications from short-barreled combat weapons, or by even more interesting “watered-down” options.

Layouts galore

, mainly Ukrainian “cutting”, has also slowly disappeared to almost nothing. It would seem that God bless them, these sub-pistols. But what if you really need a self-defense weapon?

Legend of the “zeros”:
traumatic pistol “Osa”
Four-shot

The barrelless traumatic pistol “Osa” in our country is rightfully a legendary example of a self-defense weapon. It was one of the first to appear, had a terrifying caliber of 18x45 (let me remind you that the bore of modern 12-gauge shotguns is 18.2 mm) and fired hefty rubber bullets with a high stopping effect.

This gun

which, already in its fourth generation, is still produced by the Russian enterprise “New Weapons Technologies” (NOT), was the most effective in use for biological purposes.
It has acceptable reliability and has good combat accuracy. Traumatic pistol "Egida PB-2" with 18x45T cartridges

Disadvantages

“Wasps” have always been considered due to its impressive transverse dimensions, low charge capacity, electric trigger and “fake” appearance. Over 20 years of operation, design and operational problems of the pistol were identified.

This

were not always “children’s sores”: sometimes pistols simply refused to fire, opened spontaneously when firing, cases of partial destruction of the body and individual parts were recorded.
We must pay tribute to the manufacturer, who constantly worked to improve its products. The main part of the “jambs” was successfully resolved by the manufacturer during modifications. Traumatic pistol "Egida PB-2" with 18x45T cartridges

"Wasp"

has been and continues to be produced in several modifications. Work to modernize weapons was mainly associated with changes in the method of firing a shot. A more powerful model was also created for arming law enforcement agencies.

Multiple batches

pistols were purchased for law enforcement forces of a dozen foreign countries, including Germany, Switzerland and the United States.
Not to say that the Osa is shipped to the West by train, but it is definitely in the NATO weapons catalogue. The Osa pistol
is a powerful weapon, the bullet of which, when hit in the head, often caused death. And even when a large-caliber bullet hit the “carcass,” the result usually exceeded all expectations, and sometimes the wounded person was saved only by timely abdominal surgery.

Rubber bullets

The first version of the cartridge for the "Wasp" was cast with a steel core.
Not for “armor-piercing”, but to increase mass and reliably detect a bullet somewhere in the lungs using an X-ray. Traumatic pistol "Egida PB-2". Cassette with two cartridges 18x45T

Already

in 2001, according to the requirements of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, the energy of the Wasp cartridge was reduced from 120 J to 85-91 J. The core disappeared from the bullet. But this cartridge, with a bullet weight of 11.6 to 14 grams, remained quite effective. From the entire list of cartridges approved for civilian circulation for this weapon, traumatic, signal, lighting, light and sound and gas cartridges are known.

To date

Osa pistols are classified as limited destruction firearms (LDF).
The NOT product line has been updated with the Compact models chambered for 15x40 and M-09 chambered for the powerful 18.5x55TD cartridge. Traumatic pistol "Egida PB-2". Cassette with two cartridges 18x45T

"Aegis":

half from "Wasp"

But anyway

"Wasp" was too "fat". When worn constantly, this was an obvious and insoluble drawback. The problem was solved only in 2006, with the advent of a new development by the NOT company - the Egida PB-2 traumatic pistol.

Purely outwardly

this was half of the “Wasp”, that is, the “Aegis” received two vertically paired barrels, which made it flat and “toe”. The design of the new product was developed on the basis of the most advanced modification of the Wasp: the PB-4-1ML model.

When the fuse is turned off,
the laser center is automatically turned on

Externally "Aegis"

is similar to a classic double-barreled derringer and has the same purpose: constant concealed carry for the purpose of possible self-defense.
However, historically, derringers were used not only for self-defense - US President A. Lincoln was assassinated by actor D. Booth in 1865 with just such a weapon. Pistol "Egida PB-2", rear view, next to it are spent cartridge cases of 18x45T cartridges

"Aegis PB-2"

, like the “Wasp”, is a barrelless firearm with limited destruction. Simply put, the role of the barrel in a pistol is played by the cartridge case. This decision should not be underestimated.

Eg

, the NRS-2 reconnaissance shooting knife uses a barrel only a few centimeters long, but this “short” one provides the ability to confidently hit a chest target at a distance of 25 m. Despite the terrible ergonomics of such a shooting device, with some skill this result can be improved to the size of a head targets.

"Aegis"

with a declared effectiveness of up to 5 meters, it allows you to consistently hit a chest target from a distance of 15-20 m.

Note that

that the very fact of being hit with a traumatic weapon at a distance of more than a few meters is not only ineffective, but in itself can become the reason for a criminal case - this is no longer a defense, but an attack.

Holster for "Aegis"

Frame

The pistol is made of plastic. On the Internet you can find statements about problems with the strength of the Aegis hull, but I personally have not encountered such examples. Of the half dozen PB-2s I am “familiar” with, each pistol has at least 40-70 rounds of rubber bullet ammunition fired.

Wherein

no problems were noted with the housings or other structural parts. "Aegis" uses the same 18x45 cartridges as "Wasp", and without any problems shoots powerful cartridges from the first releases. The weapon is reloaded with 2-round cassettes, the reloading process is fast and does not cause any difficulties. The trigger is folding, there is a key safety.

Job

The gun provides two sources of electricity. The main one is a magnetic pulse generator, which is used directly to fire a shot. To operate the built-in laser designator, a battery is used, which is recharged from an external power source.

At present

the cost of “Aegis” does not exceed 10 thousand rubles. Traumatic cartridges are offered for approximately 100 rubles apiece. These weapons, due to their effectiveness and low liquidity, are less often sold or handed over for destruction.

Let's shoot

Traumatic

pistols of the first generations rarely shoot with the desired accuracy and accuracy. It is almost impossible to get anywhere from the old “Leaders” (former TT) or “Naganych” (former revolver of the 1895 model).

Once upon a time

this was uncritical: the main criterion when choosing a “trauma” was the legendary status of former combat models, familiar to everyone from films and books. But later, the owners of the “trauma” guns wanted normal accuracy from their weapons.

Modern

traumatic pistols and revolvers can shoot surprisingly accurately, differing little in this regard from their “real” counterparts. But "Wasp" and "Aegis" always shot well. Last but not least, thanks to the built-in laser center.

Within

In an impromptu test, we shot several dozen 85-J cartridges with a rubber bullet from the Aegis at a distance of about 7-8 m. The shooting was carried out standing, hand-held, without a rest. A4 size “spray” was used as targets. Not only the hits, but also the movement of the laser pointer point were clearly visible on it.

Descent

“Aegis” is very peculiar, but this does not prevent it from firing without noticeable jerking. It's comfortable to shoot even with one hand. The shot is quite loud and there is decent recoil. But the main thing is the results. The target was hung on a durable chestnut board 5 cm thick.

Certainly,

the rubber bullets did not penetrate it, but the dents remained impressive. If we are talking about the degree of impact on a person, then even modern 18x45T cartridges still remain one of the most powerful traumatic weapons on the Russian market.

Conclusion

Statistics

the use of “traumatic weapons” suggests that for real self-defense, weapons chambered for 18x45 mm are one of the most effective options. In my opinion, Aegis PB-2 is preferable for constant wear.

Who's serious

fears an attack, he will still choose “Wasp”, and in his own way he will be right. But if the likelihood of an attack is hypothetical, then carrying a four-barreled pistol with you every day is quite burdensome. In this case, you need something flat, light and compact. For women this is even more true.

On

Our market also has the Izhevsk “Strazhnik” MP-461. This is a long-time competitor of Aegis, which appeared almost simultaneously with it in 2006. This pistol uses the same 18x45 cartridges. “Strazhnik” was released to the market in great haste: “Osa” was too popular.

Izhevsk residents

clearly they wanted to grab their piece of the then “traumatic” pie. The result turned out to be worse than expected: due to design flaws, the Izhevsk pistol did not have the necessary reliability, which affected its sales.

Justice

For the sake of it, it should be noted that subsequently the gunsmiths of Izhmekh corrected the main problems of their brainchild.
But externally, the “Aegis” is more “sleek” and looks prettier, which is one of the determining factors for a self-defense weapon. PM-T. One of the best options for converting a PM pistol into a traumatic weapon

Can

predict that the OOOP chambered for 18x45 will be in the “arms” of our fellow citizens who need protection for a long time. Of course, “almost real” traumatic pistols and revolvers will also be in demand.

There will be

new models appear and are sold.

Pistol Osa Compact

custom_block(5, 46416290, 7012);
This rare modification of the barrelless gun was developed on the basis of the PB-4-1 ML and differs from it in the following:

  • For this gun, new 15x40 cartridges were developed, which had thin walls, unlike the thick ones for the PB-4, made of steel. The new cartridges became shorter and narrower, which made it possible to generally reduce the thickness of the entire pistol;
  • A new two-flag fuse was built in. For ease of use, when it is turned off, the laser designator is automatically activated;
  • The target designator itself has also undergone changes. It received a green color, which made it possible to temporarily blind the enemy when shining into his eyes;
  • To tilt the cartridge block in case of loading or reloading, the latch must be pulled back, which is similar to the actions when working with a self-loading pistol.

In other respects, the Compact is no different from its progenitor PB-4-1 ML. The block includes four chambers; a warhead casing is used as a barrel here, as before. To monitor the battery charge, an indicator with an indicator of the remaining charge has appeared.

Pistol Wasp Aegis

The Osa Aegis barrelless pistol went into production in 2006. The modification was created on the basis of PB-4-1 ML. The Aegis was supposed to be a direct competitor to the famous Guardian pistol. The main task of the developers was to optimize the weapon. For concealed carry in all situations, its design had to be made very small in size. For this purpose, the number of chambers was reduced to 2, this made it possible to make the Osa very flat. The body was devoid of all protruding and sharp parts. The ammunition used was 18x45 cartridges, traumatic and light-sound cartridges, as well as signal flares.

The reloading system has been simplified - now you can change two cartridges at once, because they come in one unit. The gun comes with three blocks, one is loaded and two are carried with you as spares. The trigger mechanism is usually powered by a special generator. There is also an electrical system that determines the combat-ready charge. Protection against accidental shooting is made in the form of a unique fuse in the front part of the gun and a folding trigger.
