Traumatic pistol MP-80-13T: optimal price-quality ratio

Of all the traumatic weapons presented on the Russian arms market, the most popular are the types that were made on the basis of the popular Makarov pistol. But they are also the main topic of debate between critics. The most talked about pistols are the IzhMech pistols. The latest version of the PM-based weapon from this company is the MP 80 13T, which has a comfortable handle. Experts consider this pistol to be a good tuning of all previous generations; it has absorbed all their positive properties.

Design and mechanisms of the MP-80-13T pistol

Structurally, the MP-80-13T exactly replicates the already legendary Makarov pistol. The only exception is the barrel with beads, which is standard for all traumatic models, and the chamber has also been changed to accept larger cartridges.

Double action trigger mechanism. Reloading is carried out in the same way as in the original version of the PM - due to the recoil of the free shutter. On the left side of the bolt casing there is a non-automatic safety lever, convenient for activation with the thumb when grasping the handle. The handle cheeks of the MP-80-13T are represented by a bakelite plate, identical to the combat and traumatic models. The bolt casing is identical in size to the PM for greater visual similarity, but an experienced person is able to distinguish the “injury” by the larger diameter of the barrel bore.

Disassembly and assembly of the MP-80-13T is carried out according to the classical scheme:

  1. The magazine is removed.
  2. The pistol is removed from the safety cock.
  3. The bolt casing is retracted to the rearmost position to extract the remaining cartridge in the barrel.
  4. The bolt stop is lowered, and by lifting the bolt by the rear part, the bolt casing is removed in a smooth “pull-away” motion.
  5. The return spring is removed.
  6. Using a screwdriver, unscrew the screw that secures the cheeks of the handle.

Assembly is carried out in reverse order. Lubrication with liquid gun lubricant can also be done when the PM is not completely disassembled; to do this, you just need to drop a couple of drops on the inside of the trigger and the bolt casing, and then assemble the pistol, cock the hammer several times, and release it without installing the magazine.

It is recommended to disassemble the pistol only on a flat surface, preferably on a table or bench. This is necessary for the safety of parts.

Trunk construction and care

The barrel of the MP-80-13T is made of steel, which is absolutely not equal in characteristics to that used in the combat model. However, the barrel itself is used here with two beaded teeth, which slightly reduces the power and muzzle velocity of a 45-caliber rubber bullet to limit its penetrating properties.

Poor quality of steel should, in theory, imply strengthening the barrel bore with a bushing, but the manufacturer did not provide for this possibility. Also, the thickness of the walls also affects the chamber - in order not to cause the chamber to rupture, the use of non-standard or low-quality ammunition is not recommended.

When choosing a pistol in a store, inspect the inside of the barrel as seen from the muzzle using a flashlight. If you find defects in the barrel bore - potholes, deep scratches on the very surface of the barrel, as well as teeth or burrs on the burrs, then you should request another copy of the MP 80. Also pay attention to the burrs themselves in the barrel - they should be parallel to each other. Any deviations will lead to a decrease in the accuracy of the battle. Choose the best pistol option that has minimal or no defects in the barrel.

Remember that you cannot modify the inner surface of the barrel and chamber with sandpaper! This will almost instantly destroy the barrel, so for polishing it is recommended to use only soft cloth napkins and GOI paste!

What cartridges are suitable for the MP-80-13T

The MP-80 was developed for traumatic 45 caliber Rubber cartridges, which accommodates a 13 mm rubber bullet weighing 1.5 grams. The manufacturer declared the shot power to be 91 J, but in fact it is somewhat lower - within 80 J, which is a very good result - with such a bullet size, a hit is guaranteed to cause severe pain in the aggressor even through thick clothing.

The production of these cartridges in the Russian Federation is established at the AKBS and Tekhkrim factories. We strongly recommend purchasing cartridges from AKBS for the high quality of ammunition.

Story

Both of these pistols began to be developed and created almost simultaneously at the facilities of the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant with the participation of the TsSN “Kolchuga” in 2004. The IZH-79-8 gas pistol, which had already become popular at that time, was taken as the basis.

In addition to the MP-79 and MP-80, the line also includes a traumatic version of the PSM pistol called MP-78-9T, but since the PSM is quite different from the regular Makarov pistol, we will talk about it in a separate article.

Contrary to popular belief, all pistols of the Makarych family are original products and not a remake of the army or service version of the PM pistol.

Advantages and disadvantages

Like any mechanism, the MP-80-13T has certain design pros and cons. In general, the pistol is “average” in terms of price-quality ratio. Let's take a closer look at the positive and negative aspects of this model.

pros

The body of this model is made not of silumin, but of steel. This gives it unprecedented body strength among all types of traumatic weapons.

The manufacturer guarantees the absence of penetrating wounds due to the larger caliber of the rubber bullet compared to 9 mm ammunition

Simplicity and ease of use of the pistol, borrowed from the “combat” model

The impact force of a rubber bullet will not leave any aggressor “indifferent”, guaranteeing his retreat in almost 100% of cases

Minuses

“Weak” barrel metal - over time, cracks may appear on the beads, as well as the appearance of shells on the inner surface of the barrel

Thin walls of the chamber can “disperse” over time, which will cause a slight loosening of the cartridge. In such a situation, the risk of rupture of the cartridge part increases.

Small magazine capacity

Poor quality of barrel manufacturing and gun body bluing

Also often cited as a disadvantage is the softness of the metal from which the trigger is made. But apart from mentions from several users, such information could not be found. Perhaps there is a defect in a specific series.

Tips for caring for the MP-80-13T pistol

Despite the fact that civilian models of weapons require less maintenance compared to full-fledged models, it is recommended to carry out the same maintenance as on military models. After each shooting from the MP-80-13T, it is recommended to clean the barrel from carbon deposits using a barrel cleaning solution. Depending on the operating conditions, it is recommended to completely disassemble, clean and lubricate the internal parts of the gun. The lubricant is selected to be liquid for warm climates and thick for cold climates.

In some samples, the user may experience a cartridge that does not feed into the chamber. This is due to the undeveloped feeder spring in the magazine. The problem can be solved simply - it is recommended to fully equip the magazine at least once a day for a couple of weeks, then manually unload and re-equip the magazine. The spring will develop and the feed problem will be eliminated.

Remember that like any weapon, this sample is afraid of water! If it is not afraid of splashes or light rain, then falling into water is fraught with the appearance of corrosion and damp cartridges. Therefore, if such a situation arises, it is highly recommended that you quickly disassemble the weapon, dry and lubricate the parts, and reassemble the pistol. It’s better to put the cartridges aside and put dry ones in the magazine.

Features of 45 Rubber cartridges

45 Rubber cartridges contain a 13mm diameter rubber ball mounted in a smaller cross section due to its elasticity. The mass of the bullet is 1.5 times greater, in contrast to the caliber 9 mm R.A. and is 1.5 g.

Initially, manufacturing companies stated that during firing a power equal to 91 Joules was achieved. In reality, a little less - approximately 75-85 Joule. However, even this figure is considered high; this traumatic pistol is quite enough for self-defense.

Today, the production of these cartridges in Russia is carried out by AKBS and Tekhkrim enterprises. By and large, both companies produce ammunition of the same quality, but there are certain features.

It’s just that some batches of these manufacturers have cartridges that are not of very good quality. But, as practice has shown, such troubles occur much less frequently at the AKBS enterprise. That’s why many people advise choosing 45 rubber cartridges from this particular manufacturer. But if this ammunition is not on sale, you can use Tekhkrim products. If we consider it as a whole, then in this case it is advised to choose cartridges not according to the manufacturer, but according to a specific batch.

Attention: If you purchased a 45 Rubber caliber pistol, then you must not forget about the larger size of the rubber ball and the increased contact area with the surface. For example, 9 mm R.A. cartridges. in certain cases, they leave a through hole in the target, while 45 rubber can only make a deep dent. During self-defense using these particular pistols, it is the absence of penetrating wounds that will protect the shooter from problems with the law.

Results

This OOOP can be safely called an excellent means of self-defense. Thanks to the fairly powerful MP-80-13T cartridge, you can be guaranteed to “pacify” almost any aggressor without causing serious damage or penetrating wounds.

The design of the MP 80 is not without its shortcomings, but their number is much less than in previous models, and this is what puts the 80 model pistol at a higher stage of development. The ergonomics of the weapon have undergone serious modifications - after all, the main purpose of the pistol is to quickly draw and fire.

Another problem with this model will be the use of outdated technologies - a cartridge of this caliber is practically no longer used, and the use of beads in the bore has already sunk into history - cartridges with a small amount of gunpowder are now used. But even after a decrease in energy, it is able to perform its functions.

Summarizing all of the above, we can say that the MP-80-13T is the optimal balance between price and quality. Owners will also be pleased with a wide range of tuning tools - anatomical handles, triggers from the original PM, modified trigger guards, triggers and much more.
