Traumatic pistol MP-81 for regular and effective self-defense

In recent years, the TT combat pistol has greatly attracted many manufacturers of traumatic weapons, who adapt this military weapon for traumatic cartridges. Probably every company, one way or another, tried to do this. What can you say about MP 81? If we compare this pistol with the weapon of the Leader complex, then it will be in the lead. If compared with the TT-T, which has long been discontinued, it will be inferior. Thus, we can safely say that the MP 81 is an average player in the trauma market.

general information

The manufacturer of this pistol is the well-known company IzhMech, which owns many types of traumatic weapons. This model appeared on the market in 2008, it immediately alerted many potential buyers, since the IzhMekh company has very low quality control of weapons for civil self-defense at the exit from the assembly line.

The interest in combat TT as a platform for adaptation to trauma is quite understandable:

  • The weapon has a recognizable design; probably everyone knows it: from the youngest to the oldest. This plays a certain psychological role in self-defense;
  • The TT has a convenient device and circuit that allow it to be quickly re-equipped for traumatic cartridges. When compared with the adaptation of other combat pistols for traumatic weapons, then the least amount of work needs to be done with this;
  • There are many TT units in military warehouses that are no longer used in service. No one wants to take them, and no one is writing them off, so copies are given to trauma manufacturers.

I would like to say that this weapon, in combat or traumatic form, is not very suitable for regular self-defense. The main reason for this is its dimensions.

If we talk specifically about the MP 81, it has undergone more design changes than other “ports”. The very first thing that catches the eye of every consumer is the modified handle. The fact is that for some reason the IzhMekh plant decided to place a magazine from the MP-79-9T in this pistol, abandoning the original TT magazine.

Specifications:

  • 9 mm PA cartridges are used;
  • The length of the pistol is 195 millimeters;
  • The length of the pistol barrel is 116 millimeters;
  • The height of the pistol is 120 millimeters;
  • The width of the pistol is 30 millimeters;
  • The weight of the unloaded pistol is 850 grams;
  • The magazine holds 8 charges.

Of course, the modified magazine did not affect the comfort of using this pistol, but the appearance was spoiled. People who wanted to purchase a TT in a traumatic shell, and not a weapon for self-defense, had to abandon this model. Experts still did not understand why it was necessary to abandon the original magazine if it could have simply been adapted for 9 mm RA cartridges, which would have consumed much less production resources of the IzhMech company.

What has changed in the “trauma”?

Despite the external similarity with its combat counterpart, the MP 81 traumatic pistol has several changes. For example, IzhMekh employees made the heel in the clip shorter. The fact is that since the “trauma” uses 9-mm RA ammunition, there is no need for an original TT magazine. The manufacturer borrowed the clip from the combat rifle unit from the “trauma” model MP-79. Since the civilian rifle unit is not equipped with the original TT magazine, it is impossible to put a traumatic pistol on the slide stop. The magazine has a steel heel and a plastic feeder. To give the owner the opportunity to clean it, the clip was made collapsible. This part of the pistol, judging by reviews, is resistant to increased loads and falls. However, in order for the MP-81 clip to last longer, experts do not recommend storing it loaded. Otherwise, the magazine spring will weaken. You can buy a clip for 600 rubles.

The changes also affected the barrel of the weapon. Also in the firing pin area the bolt has a sawed-off rear part, which is not typical for a TT. According to the approved certificate, MP 81 is a traumatic pistol. Therefore, the manufacturer made a number of design changes to ensure that this weapon could not fire real live ammunition. For this purpose, the TT barrel was drilled out so that a bushing could be installed into it. It is also used in civilian weapons as a false barrel. If you look at the muzzle of a traumatic pistol, you will see that it is noticeably different from the muzzle of a TT.

Due to the fact that weapons-grade steel is used to make the barrel of a TT pistol, MP-81 owners do not face the problem of swelling of the barrel bore. To make the “trauma” look like a military original, some craftsmen press a metal sleeve into the remains of the fake barrel. Since the barrel and bolt are interlocked in the front sight area quite firmly, removing it will be quite problematic.

Pistol design

As with other adaptations of a military weapon for trauma, here it was not possible to preserve the original operating scheme. The fact is that traumatic cartridges have much less energy, which would not be enough to activate the circuitry of a combat weapon.

The first changes were made in the barrel area of the weapon. Thus, all protrusions were removed from the barrel and bolt casing as unnecessary. The barrel is now securely attached to the pistol body through a strong frame.

The MP 81 pistol, in general, retains all the main components from its combat counterpart, except for the barrel, which makes it a very reliable weapon. But when choosing a weapon, you need to pay attention specifically to the barrel, since it is the basis of such a weapon. To be sure that the pistol will serve for many years, you need to pay attention to the year of manufacture of the military analogue: preferably, it should be from the latest batches.

Cartridges for the MP 81 are selected according to the same scheme as for other traumatic pistols. For self-defense in real conflict situations, you need to choose the most powerful cartridges. For training, recreational or sports shooting, you need to choose weak cartridges, the released energy of which does not exceed 50 J. The MP 81 pistol will last for many years if you choose the ammunition correctly and responsibly.

Safety of use of MP 81

It is impossible not to talk about the safety of using this pistol, because it is worth paying special attention to. When the gun is completely disassembled, it immediately becomes clear that there is no fuse. Moreover, this disease is inherent both in TT itself and in all traumatic analogues.

The role of the safety device here is played by the safety cocking of the trigger. To be honest, the design is not the most reliable. In theory, of course, it should protect the owner from an accidental shot both in a pocket or holster, and in case of an accidental fall, but this is just a theory; in practice, everything turns out to be completely different.

It must be remembered that manufacturers of trauma equipment receive old TTs that someone has already used for more than one year. It follows that the mechanisms of the gun already have a certain wear and tear, which increases the possibility of an accidental shot, especially when falling. Therefore, this design does not provide 100% reliability against an accidental shot. The greatest protection from an accidental shot is the law that prohibits carrying such a weapon with a cartridge in the chamber. But no one forbids carrying a loaded magazine.

What do the experts advise?

Due to the fact that in Russia weapons for self-defense cannot be purchased without permission and a license, anyone wishing to acquire an MP-81 will have to complete a number of formalities. The fact is that this model is a firearm of limited destruction (LLD). According to experts, the use of such shooting units in general should not cause life-threatening injuries to a person. Of the “injuries,” only temporary non-lethal damage is inflicted. However, the MP-81 can cause severe and, in some cases, fatal injuries. For example, if you hit an attacker in the head with a rubber bullet from a short distance. In this regard, the circulation and storage of traumatic rifle units is controlled in Russia.

Unreliable people will not be able to become the owner of the MP-81. This category includes citizens under investigation, as well as those with mental disabilities. To obtain permission to purchase and store “trauma,” you need to write a corresponding application addressed to the head of the licensing department at the department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs at your place of registration and provide a medical certificate.

What can be concluded?

As I already said at the beginning of the review, the MP 81 pistol occupies a solid middle place in the Russian trauma market. It is better than the Leader complex, but inferior to TT-T. If you go into detail, it becomes clear that all three types are very different from each other: this fact becomes especially clear after completely disassembling all three pistols. The main differences lie in the design, especially in the barrel design. The magazine capacity and the cartridges used also differ.

If we talk about the similarity with its progenitor, then MP 81 takes last place here. This, of course, is not a minus, but simply a fact that speaks of big changes in the design of the “port” of a combat pistol. Despite all this, the pistol is of good quality; after purchase there is no need to tune the MP 81, since everything has already been done at the factory.

Owners' opinion

Traumatic pistol Makarov pm-t

Judging by the reviews, the MP 81 traumatic pistol can be equipped with AKBS Magnum, MdI and KSPZ Lethal + cartridges. Due to its design, the weapon works equally well with all ammunition. However, there are differences in such a parameter as accuracy. For example, good accuracy from this “trauma” is provided by ACBS. From a 3-meter distance, projectiles disperse up to 50 mm. With KSPS, the accuracy of combat is somewhat worse. Due to the fact that the MP-81 is thin, it is comfortable to wear. The disadvantage of the weapon is that in most cases the bluing is not done very well and comes off fairly quickly.
