Traumatic revolver taurus lom-13 - an effective weapon for self-defense

The Taurus LOM-13 revolver is a product of the Brazilian concern Forjas Taurus SA, known far beyond the country's borders. This multi-shot gun uses 9mm RA cartridges. They are traumatic. When designing it, a small-sized revolver for combat purposes was taken as the base. Such weapons are equally actively used by citizens and representatives of the law - police officers.

Traumatic pistol: its structure

The Taurus Lom 13 revolver has a compact drum, which, together with the frame, is made of super-strong steel.

It holds 5 rounds.

The handle has excellent ergonomic properties.

The design of the weapon is modern. The surface of the revolver undergoes several stages of processing - it is first polished, then blued. The upper part is left matte, which eliminates the appearance of glare that will not interfere with the moment of aiming.

The frame is designed without protruding parts, which allows you to quickly remove the weapon and makes it easier to care for. The drum and barrel are non-removable, which eliminates the use of live ammunition - some “craftsmen” convert weapons to use such bullets.

Specifics of the revolver device

The process of charging and recharging a traumatic gun of this type takes a minimum of time - this is permissible, since the drum is equipped with plate clips.

The barrel is solid, without additional inserts. It is possible to shoot in the pre-cocked position due to the double-action firing mechanism (Trigger Mechanism).

The Taurus LOM 13 model has a trigger with coil springs. The mainspring of the trigger is considered the most powerful.

The presence of a stop, an existing pusher, and a provided coiled trigger spring ensures higher operational reliability of the entire assembly. These details do not complicate the design in any way. The model does not provide the ability to regulate the cocking force.

But users ignore this drawback - the purpose of the traumatizer is self-defense.

The design of the Taurus LOM-13 traumatic revolver does not have mechanical safeties, the presence of which would significantly complicate its handling, especially for shooters without experience.

The peculiarities of such weapons include the special location of the special lock well, which is located on the back side of the trigger. If you turn the lock with a key specially designed for this, the well will rise and will not allow you to cock the hammer.

This type of blocking prevents unauthorized shooting. If the trigger is locked, the weapon can be loaded or, conversely, unloaded, but it cannot be fired.

Characteristics

Revolver parameters overview:

  • caliber - 9mm PA;
  • H - 3.5 cm;
  • L of weapon - 17.3 cm;
  • L of the trunk only - 5.1 cm;
  • B - 3.5 cm;
  • M - 0.670 kg (uncharged);

The drum holds 5 rounds.

Rules of use for citizens

To use the Taurus revolver for its intended purpose, any 9mm RA caliber trauma cartridges, the use of which is permissible in Russia, will be suitable. They can be gas or noise. Rubber bullets also work.

The sight and the rear sight are constructed as a single unit. The rear sight is a longitudinal groove located in the upper part of the revolver frame.

You can control the traumatizer using the thumb and index finger of either hand.

It is equally convenient to cock the trigger of the Taurus LOM 13 revolver with either hand. In the tilted drum position, the Taurusa trigger will be locked. It is impossible to recline it when the hammer is cocked. The specialists of the manufacturing company found a compromise solution - its implementation allows you to combine compactness and ergonomic characteristics.

The polymer, rubberized shell ensures high reliability of holding the revolver at the moment of shooting - this can really be done with one hand.

At the same time, the weapon does not fall out or “sink” in the hand due to the presence of a thickening on the handle, which is structurally provided in the middle.

There are certain rules of the Russian Federation that establish certain restrictions on the use of traumatic weapons. They are mandatory - otherwise self-defense will be classified as an attack, and in extreme cases - as murder.

Therefore, shooting is allowed only in cases of urgent need, when there is a specific threat to your property, health, life of you or your family.

Before firing a shot, it is important to give a warning about your intentions, perhaps not only verbally, but also by shooting in the air. It is prohibited to shoot a person's neck, groin and head.

In practice, creating a revolver that fires a light rubber bullet is somewhat more difficult than creating a pistol. It's all about the mass of the projectile being thrown. There is no such problem in a firearm revolver: the bullet is quite heavy and a very significant force of powder gases is required to remove it from the barrel of the cartridge case. Forced pressure is created in the cartridge case, and the bullet leaves it with sufficient speed. Further in the bore, the bullet is further accelerated and stabilized with the help of rifling. The situation is completely different with a cartridge equipped with a rubber bullet. It is very light and if it does not meet any resistance on its way, it will very quickly leave the barrel and most of the energy of the powder gases will simply go into the atmosphere. And the shorter the barrel, the less energy the ball will develop at the muzzle. There are two ways to solve this problem: use ammunition with a heavier bullet or achieve acceptable results by changing the design of the revolver. Since the ammunition is 9 R.A. is the most common, the second path was chosen. We immediately decided to abandon the traditional scheme. The principles underlying 9 RA pistol barrel design do not work properly in a revolver. So that a revolver chambered for rubber bullets cartridge 9 R.A. showed high results and was compact at the same time, it was decided to transfer the moment of boosting pressure directly to the drum chamber, and not assign this task to the barrel bore. When fired, a light rubber ball very quickly leaves the cartridge case and immediately begins to deform, taking the shape of the front part of the drum chamber. Then the ball enters the bore of the diameter of the barrel and continues acceleration in it. For this purpose, the bore is made smooth, without any protrusions at all. To ensure that the ball accurately flies to the target when leaving the muzzle of the barrel, the LOM-13 barrel has 8 straight grooves. They dampen parasitic vibrations of the ball during reverse deformation after leaving the chamber. This design of the LOM-13 makes it possible to minimize the loss of powder gases in the gap between the barrel and the drum and obtain quite acceptable energy from the bullet of the 9 RA cartridge at the exit from the barrel. For example, a cartridge with a declared energy of 34 Joules leaves the LOM-13 barrel with an energy of 85-90 J. An equally important aspect for a constantly carried self-defense weapon is the compactness of the model, so the choice was made in favor of a model with a 5-seater drum. In addition to the smaller (compared to 6-shot) outer diameter, the use of a 5-piece drum also allows the height of the frame to be reduced. The frame itself has no protruding parts, which makes it easier to both remove and use the weapon in everyday use. The LOM-13 barrel is 2 inches (51 mm) long. It is a separate but non-removable part. At the bottom of the barrel there is a boss in which there is a recess for placing the extractor rod in it. The bullet channel is made directly into the barrel, no liners or other inserts are used. On the upper tide of the barrel there is a streamlined front sight with a transverse notch on its rear part to eliminate glare when aiming. For the same purpose, the entire upper surface of the barrel and the frame of the revolver are made matte. A slot along the entire length of the upper part of the frame is used as a rear sight. Since the LOM-13 belongs to the class of compact revolvers, ease of holding the weapon plays a very important role. Here you usually have to make sacrifices: either convenient but bulky, or inconvenient but compact. TAURUS engineers found a compromise solution and used a fairly wide, but short and flat handle shell with recesses for two fingers of the holding hand. The shell itself is made of rubberized polymer. Its texture, grooves for the fingers and rough sides with “pimples” allow the shooter to securely hold the revolver when shooting even with one hand. In the middle part, the shell of the handle has a thickening, which, when holding the weapon, does not allow it to “sink” in the hand or, conversely, to fall out. All revolver controls are accessible to the thumb and index fingers of both hands. Pulling the trigger and cocking the hammer is equally comfortable with both the right and left hands. Access to the drum lock button is optimized for the right thumb. To release the drum while holding the revolver in your left hand, you need to move your thumb from the right to the left side of the frame. When the cylinder is folded back, the revolver's trigger is blocked. When the hammer is cocked, it is also impossible to tilt the drum back. The revolver does not have any mechanical safeties. However, it has one interesting feature characteristic of revolvers from this company - the Taurus Security System. It consists in the location of the well of a special lock located on the back side of the trigger. When the lock is turned with a special key (it is included in the delivery set of the revolver in the amount of 2 pieces), the borehole rises by about 1 mm and does not make it possible to cock the hammer, thereby blocking the revolver from firing a shot. The ability to load and unload a “locked” revolver is retained. The LOM-13 trigger mechanism (trigger mechanism) is double-action and is no different from the trigger mechanism of modern revolvers. A shot can be fired by pressing the trigger both when the hammer is pulled (self-cocking) and when it is cocked. In the case of self-cocking shooting, the trigger stroke is quite long and very heavy, since the shooter’s muscular strength is spent on compressing four springs and turning the drum 1/5. If the hammer is pre-cocked, the compression of the springs and rotation of the drum will occur during the cocking stage, and for the next shot you only need to lightly press the trigger. Externally, the Taurus LOM-13 is very similar to modern Smith & Wesson revolvers. Taurus LOM-13 has a forward sliding drum lock (on the left side of the frame just behind the drum) and a removable right frame wall. Since the drum pusher is located directly under the removable wall, it is offset relative to its axis to the right, so the drum rotates counterclockwise. This is where the similarities with Smith & Wesson revolvers end. The trigger for the Taurus LOM-13 revolver has only coil springs. The most powerful is the trigger spring, also known as the mainspring. The trigger spring is noticeably shorter and weaker. The force is transmitted to the trigger through a special pusher. The use of a coiled trigger spring somewhat complicates the design due to the use of a pusher and its stop, but greatly increases the reliability of the unit. The traditional use of ring springs with antennae reduces both the area of contact of the trigger with the axis and can lead to breakage of such a spring: its operational strength is much lower than that of a coiled one. The use of a coiled mainspring also has a positive effect on operational reliability, but unlike the leaf springs of the American Smith & Wesson and Colt, it does not allow adjusting the cocking force. Although for compact revolvers such adjustment is not vital - the sights are rudimentary, and the barrel is very short. By definition, compact revolvers are not designed for precision shooting at paper targets. Their main purpose is self-defense. And here the revolver justifies itself 100%. Ease of handling and constant readiness to fire are the hallmarks of a modern revolver. And also reliability. You can argue as much as you like about the high reliability of pistols, but in the case of traumatic weapons this is not the case. And the point here is not at all the “unreliability” of pistols, but the ammunition. On the Russian market of civilian weapons and ammunition, the cartridge 9 R.A. It can be either noise (blank) or equipped with an irritant (gas), or have a solid projectile - a rubber bullet. At the same time, the energy of the produced ammunition is 9 R.A. ranges from 34 to 80 Joules. No self-loading pistol can cope with such a power spread. And even if it does, it will not work correctly with any ammunition. Of course, the issue of using different cartridges can be resolved by selecting return springs with different forces. Or you can not think about all this and use a revolver with any of the above ammunition. Versatility is one of the important properties of a revolver. Many users, depending on the tasks, can easily load and use the entire range of 9 R.A. ammunition. At the same time, the design of the drum allows for increased efficiency when firing gas cartridges. Narrowing the exit from the chamber makes it possible to give the powder gases and irritant greater speed. This allows you to both increase the range of destruction of the irritant and avoid the breakthrough of the irritant into the gap between the barrel and the drum. In addition to the possibility of using the entire wide range of 9 R.A. ammunition, it was necessary to maximize the reliability of the weapon. It's no secret that sometimes you can get defective or expired cartridges, which, when fired, do not achieve the required pressure. In this case, the rubber ball may get stuck in the barrel and the next shot will either disable the weapon or tightly clog the barrel bore, making further shooting impossible. The exit hole for the rubber bullet in the drum of the LOM-13 revolver is only 5.5 mm. Inside the drum chamber, when fired, a pressure is reached that can push the rubber bullet out of the drum chamber and accelerate it further in the barrel bore. If there is insufficient pressure, the bullet simply will not be able to leave the drum chamber, thereby protecting the shooter from weapon failure. And, of course, durability. The Taurus LOM-13 is a massive all-steel revolver whose mechanical and operational strength is unquestionable.

Advantages of Taurus LOM 13

Shooters, discussing the question “Is it worth buying such a revolver or not?”, note that the weapon is easy to handle and is in a state of combat readiness every hour.

Arguments regarding the advantages of individual pistol models break down when it comes to the energy released by the revolver cartridges - a self-loading pistol will not withstand it or the operation will be incorrect.

Another quality of the described traumatic gun is its versatility - it can be loaded and fired with any 9mm RA traumatic cartridges that are currently produced.

If the cartridges turn out to be of poor quality or their shelf life has expired, they will block the bore and then it will be impossible to fire a shot. This guarantees the shooter complete safety in case of weapon failure.

The description talks about such characteristics as high:

  • durability during operation;
  • resource;
  • reliability;
  • accuracy.

The Tauras traumatic gun does not cause any discomfort when worn and is one of the best models for self-defense.

It is convenient to store it at home in a specially designated place, carry it hidden, or take it with you on the road.

It is conveniently removed from the holster. The Taurus smoothbore revolver fails much less often.
