Air rifle Jaeger - a weapon for hunting and sport shooting

Air rifles with a powerful shot and convenient operation have long been in demand among hunters. Jager pneumatics are weapons from a Russian manufacturer. The Klimovsky Specialized Cartridge Plant began producing such equipment in 2010, regularly improving the design.

Today the basis of the company's production is PCP pneumatics, which are in great demand among hunters. This is a convenient weapon that allows you to fire several dozen powerful shots without reloading. This air rifle is convenient for hunting, but can also be used for other purposes.

Review of PCP rifle Horhe-Jager (Jager)

The high performance qualities of the models are ensured by a moderately simple mechanism and minimization of backlashes, which increases shooting accuracy. The ability to adjust the muzzle velocity allows you to use the rifle to solve most tasks.

Tuned to maximum power, the Jaeger rifle has a fairly loud shot sound. To compensate for this, a standard sound moderator is provided, which partially covers the barrel. In the sports version, a special nozzle is installed on the muzzle, which reduces the impact of compressed air on the trajectory of the bullet flying out of the barrel.

Video review of KSPZ “Jager” Horhe Jager 5.5 SPR, amateur test:

The target firing range according to the passport is 100 m. In reality, Jager allows effective fire at small targets even at longer distances.

In the production of the rifle, high-quality barrels manufactured by Lothar Walther are used. Each barrel is equipped with a small choke, which improves bullet stabilization by compressing it.

Design features of Jaeger rifles

The Jager air rifle, produced at the KSPZ plant, has a number of features that distinguish it from similar models, these are:

  1. 1. Use of German Lothar Walther barrels in weapons;
  2. 2. Manufacturing a rifle tank from aircraft-grade aluminum alloy, endowed with a triple safety margin. The tanks are tested under hydraulic pressure of 450 Bar;
  3. 3. Fastening the magazine to the box using neodymium magnets;
  4. 4. Special metal coating that protects from the negative effects of rain and snow;
  5. 5. Use of special, highly durable plastic or natural wood in the manufacture of the stock, pistol grip and butt;
  6. 6. Receiving up to 40 shots from one refill.

The magazine capacity in the Jaeger pneumatic gun, depending on the model, is from 7 to 10 rounds. The smallest caliber of products is 4.5 mm, and the largest is 9.0 mm.

Execution options - caliber and power

All Jaeger rifles have the same design and differ fundamentally in caliber, muzzle energy and method of air supply when firing (direct flow or gearbox). This choice is due to differences in the scope of application and legal restrictions - in Russia you can freely buy pneumatics no more powerful than 7.5 J.

The rifle models are marked as follows:

  • caliber – denoted by the abbreviation “Cal” and the caliber value in millimeters. For example, the marking Cal 6.35 means that the barrel caliber is 6.35 mm;
  • the presence or absence of a gearbox - can be recognized by the letter R (if it is present, then the rifle is equipped with a gearbox);
  • muzzle energy. There are three gradations of rifles based on power - SP, MP and XP. The SP designation corresponds to a power of 0.5-3 J (Soft Power), MP - 3-7.5 J (Middle Power) and XP - 7.5-25 J (Extra Power).

Rifles marked SP belong to the category of products that are structurally similar to air guns, and rifles marked MP form the basis of amateur and sports shooting.

Weapons with muzzle energy not exceeding 7.5 J do not require special permits, although they must be used in accordance with general shooting safety rules.

XP pneumatics are sold under license only. The energy of its bullet is more than enough for hunting birds and small animals, and unsuccessful hits can cause serious injuries to a person. Rifles marked XP are often produced without a gearbox.

Video review of the Jager SP Air Rifle Carbine LW (PCP, 6.35 mm, 470 mm):

Although modern pneumatics does not stand still, i.e. new models appear almost every day, but I would still like to separately mention the powerful Jager 6.35 SP rifle (470 mm, carbine with choke). It is a classic carbine produced by the Russian arms company ROK, under the Jaeger brand.

The rifle stock is quite comfortable in the hands and is highly reliable. It should also be noted that these products can be easily used by both left- and right-handed people due to the symmetrical handle.

The high performance characteristics of Jager rifles are ensured by an extremely simple mechanism and intuitive operation, which clearly has a positive effect on shooting accuracy in rough terrain.

Although the PCP rifle Yeger 6.35 SP carbine (470 mm) belongs to the premium class, it shows amazing reliability indicators that high-precision PSP rifles of other brands cannot always achieve.

As one might guess from the name, the Lothar Walther barrel in the rifle is quite long and its length of 470 mm is more than enough for aimed shooting at 120 - 130 m, but few people know that additional accuracy in Jorge Jaeger models is often achieved through a German barrel Loter Walter with a choke on the muzzle. At the same time, the choke has a positive effect when using shuttle bullets; its additional accuracy parameters do not apply to full-bodied bullets.

This model is worth purchasing both for hunting purposes and for training in shooting with air guns, but in the modification out of the box it is only capable of target shooting.

The rifle is specially weakened at the factory and has a reduced power of up to 3 J. Thanks to this weakening, you can buy a Jager 6.35 SP (470 mm, carbine) freely from the age of 18, without having any licenses. It is also applicable in shooting competitions.

In turn, the Yeger 6.35 SP rifle (470 mm, carbine with choke) is openly sold in Russia, since its initial speed does not exceed 50 m/s (which corresponds to approximately 2.7 J). For this reason, you can buy it without a special weapons permit. At the same time, the delivery set includes a reinforced spring, which accelerates the characteristics of the model beyond comprehension.

It is also worth noting that the large volume of the tank of this rifle did not affect its dimensions and weight; the volume of the receiver is 268 cm3 . The length of the entire product is a little 1030 mm, and the length of the barrel itself is 470 mm. Considering that the rifle weighs only 3.1 kg.

The stock of the Jager 6.35SP rifle (470 mm, carbine with choke), as is the case with most of its Jager analogues, is made of wood. It should be noted that all the mechanical components that make the rifle work are made of a metal alloy.

To monitor the level of remaining pressure, the rifle is equipped with a pressure gauge, which is located under the barrel, next to the hole intended for the filling fitting.

Like all similar premium rifles, the Jager 6.35 SP mm (470 mm) carbine is equipped with a safety, it is located inside the trigger guard.

The barrel of this product is designed to fire lead bullets of 6.35 mm caliber - this, in turn, is the highest possible caliber for air guns that are commercially available. For 6.35 mm bullets, this model has a clip magazine, which is designed for 8 rounds of ammunition; it is included in the delivery package along with a shelf for 1 bullet.

After simply replacing the standard spring with a more powerful one, the muzzle energy of this product will be noticeably increased, realizing its capabilities to the fullest. In an enhanced configuration, the firing speed will increase to 330 m/s . This is quite enough for both hunting and participation in sporting events.

The price of the Jaeger 6.35 SP rifle (470 mm, carbine with choke) is completely proportional to its workmanship and power characteristics.

The Weaver rail, designed to install any sighting devices at the shooter’s discretion, is another advantage of this model.

Attention! This model is supplied in permitted capacity for free purchase on the territory of the Russian Federation. At the same time, the model has the ability to increase power by replacing some parts or adjusting the design, but do not forget about the Federal Law “On Weapons” No. 150 - FZ. If necessary, relying on this law and being guided by it, you may need to obtain permission from the LLR of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia after intervention in the structure.

Comparison of PCP and other types of pneumatics

Modern pneumatics with PSP technology allow you to fire several dozen shots without additional charging of the spring. Standard pneumatics require the spring mechanism to be cocked after each shot. It is inconvenient to do this when hunting, as unnecessary sounds arise. Shooting from air guns is carried out at close range, so the platoon becomes a risk for the hunter every time.

In the case of PSP, you just need to install a cylinder with compressed air or gas and start firing. The shot is fired when you press the trigger, nothing else needs to be done. After every 7-10 shots you will have to replace the magazine or insert new cartridges. This allows you to fire more dynamically, and in some models even shoot in a short burst.

New model 5.5 SP NEW with biathlon platoon

Among the classic Jaeger rifles, the new model 5.5 SP NEW stands out. Its advantages over standard layouts are as follows:

  • faster reloading by retracting the bolt with two fingers of the shooting hand (as in biathlon);
  • fewer moving metal parts that can be damaged if handled improperly;
  • aesthetic pleasure when shooting from a rifle that closely resembles firearm models.

The video shows the Jaeger 5.5 SP NEW air rifle with biathlon cocking:

There are a large number of supporters of both the classical and biathlon schemes. It cannot be said that biathlon-style reloading makes firing fundamentally easier. The choice of a weapon of this design is a matter of personal taste and preference.

Equipment

Rifles are equipped as standard for all models, although individual changes can be made without the consent of the buyer. The usual kit for the Jaeger rifle includes:

  1. sound moderator;
  2. single loading tray;
  3. drum (except FT model);
  4. fitting for charging from a compressor or cylinder;
  5. spare parts kit;
  6. certificate;
  7. user guide.

Factory shooting targets for the rifle may also be included. They allow the buyer to initially evaluate the quality (accuracy) of a particular sample of combat and not buy a “pig in a poke.”

The Jaeger rifle has a more complex design than most other models, but is still made simpler and more reliable than its expensive counterparts. A significant part of the settings and routine repairs of the Horhe Jager air rifle can be done yourself if you have some experience. The characteristics of the IZH 38 air rifle can be viewed here. Use of the Jaeger air rifle

Horhe Jager air rifle on the hunt

Jaeger rifles have earned good reviews among airgun connoisseurs, as well as athletes and small game hunters. The operating temperature range of all varieties from +50 to -10? C allows shooting not only in the warm season, but also in winter. The main areas of use of this pneumatic are:

  • Cal 4.5 – sport shooting, hunting small pests and birds (magpies, crows);
  • Cal 5.5 – hunting small animals and waterfowl;
  • Cal 6.35 – hunting game up to hares and foxes.

Any model of rifle can be used for recreational shooting, but the high price (compared to spring-piston pneumatics) discourages beginners from it. Models of 5.5 mm caliber are popular among hunters who hunt small fur-bearing animals and do not have the opportunity to purchase a small-caliber rifle. The low threshold noise level when fired allows you to use the weapon as secretly as possible, without fear of spooking the game.

Brand history

The Klimovsky specialized cartridge plant in its modern form was created in 2001. Since 2010, the company has organized serial production of Jaeger air rifles. In 2014, models with a semi-integrated moderator and biathlon platoon began to be produced.

Pneumatics are widely used during sport shooting and are suitable for hunting small game and birds. Ensures shot accuracy at a distance of 100 -120 meters. KSPZ has its own research and development department and a control and testing station, which guarantees the high quality of the products and the absence of defects in the batches sold.

Possible upgrade

Since the rifle is initially a very advanced mechanism, it does not require additional refinement, as for most Chinese or Turkish crafts. The balance of the design is selected taking into account the anatomical characteristics of the person. The main reason why users upgrade to a new rifle is the low power of the SP and MP models.

An increase in muzzle energy above the established limit of 3 or 7.5 J is possible by adjusting the bullet speed.

Domestic versions of XP rifles have lower muzzle energy than export versions (25 J versus 65 J), so they can also be enhanced to maximum power.

Procedure for adjusting the shot speed:

  1. separate the bed;
  2. loosen the mainspring locking screw in the box (at the rear of the rifle). The operation should be carried out using a hex key from the spare parts kit;
  3. Rotate the clamp screw clockwise using tweezers. Rotating in the opposite direction reduces the muzzle velocity;
  4. tighten the spring locking screw;
  5. put the stock in place.

If you do not have the proper skill, you can damage the thread of the clamping screw, so it is better to contact a workshop to adjust it. The cost of a specialist’s work does not exceed 1200-1500 rubles. Increasing the firing speed may violate the law, so initially think about whether you really need such a powerful rifle.

Advantages and disadvantages of the design

Positive sides:

  1. the ability to choose between a gearbox and direct flow circuit;
  2. wide variation in initial bullet speed;
  3. high shooting accuracy - at long distances only slightly worse than target (sports) small-caliber weapons;
  4. the ability to configure for left-handed and right-handed people (the cocking handle can be moved to the left side);
  5. possibility of installing an additional sound moderator;

Disadvantages of the system:

  1. common to all PCP rifles is the need to inflate the cylinder, which limits the autonomy of use;
  2. high requirements for air quality when using a gearbox;
  3. reduction in accuracy in a large series of shots from a direct-flow design.

The Jager rifle is a reliable and high-quality pneumatic system. It is not very suitable for training and can be easily damaged by careless use or maintenance. Most often, the Jaeger is purchased by experienced shooters who, in practice, have become convinced of the need for a powerful and accurate rifle.
