Review of the An-12 military transport aircraft

The An-12 aircraft was developed in the Soviet Union as a military transport aircraft. The code letters in the name correspond to the abbreviation for the surname Antonov O.K. - ideological inspirer and legendary Soviet aircraft engineer. This model is rightfully called the most widespread in the history of Soviet aviation. The ship can easily be considered one of the major achievements of aviation design. In addition to its direct functions, the An-12 aircraft has repeatedly participated in rescuing the population in a number of accidents, natural disasters and armed clashes.

History of the An-12

There is an opinion that the impetus for the design of the new aircraft was the statement of the then First Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee Nikita Khrushchev, when he was on a visit to the aircraft design bureau. Having learned that foreign analogues of the An-8 were already equipped with four engines, Khrushchev submitted the idea of creating a new model to Antonov.

The first copy of the technology took off in 1957. Two years later, mass delivery of An-12s began for the Air Force. A total of 1,243 units of this model were produced between 1957 and 1972. The aircraft was produced in three cities of the USSR: Tashkent, Voronezh and Irkutsk.

Flight performance parameters

The technical characteristics of the An-12 are as follows:

We can safely say that the performance characteristics of the An-12 were of a high level for their time. This made the car competitive against the background of foreign analogues.

Design features of the An-12

In the photo of the An-12 aircraft, the raised tail in the fuselage of the aircraft is clearly visible. The hull is equipped with a large cargo hatch for transporting large cargo. In addition to the hatch, in the aft part there is a shooting installation with a small cabin for the shooter.

The design of the vessel provided it with the ability to take off and fly in difficult weather conditions.

Convenience of loading and unloading large cargo is ensured by the low landing of the hatch. It is possible to drop cargo onto the ground. The aircraft is capable of transporting independent units of equipment, which are loaded on board the vessel using cranes and winches. The carrying capacity of the An-12 is 21 tons.

Front fuselage

Features and benefits of the aircraft

The An-12 aircraft is designed to transport troops, weapons and other military equipment. It can operate at unprepared airfields. It does not require a special route for takeoff and landing.

Many developed models of this airliner have the following systems built into them:

  • sighting and navigation devices;
  • navigators;
  • devices for dropping cargo and landing troops;
  • equipment for transporting personnel and military equipment;
  • aerial photography devices;
  • thermal imagers and other devices.

The aircraft has repeatedly participated in tactical military operations. Its main advantages are structural strength, safety and versatility.

Technical equipment of An-12

The ship's fuselage consists of three compartments and an aft cabin, which was subsequently combined with the third compartment. The An-12 cockpit for pilots and crew members is located in a sealed front compartment and is partially protected by an armored coating. The compartment in the middle is not sealed. It contains a cargo room. The aft cabin is sealed and is designed for the shooting installation and the shooter. In some aircraft it was not installed.

The wings of the airplane are located on top of the vessel and are equipped with a single-fin tail. The retractable chassis consists of three supports, two of which are located at the front and one at the rear of the chassis. The aircraft is powered by four turboprop engines located under the wings. The engine is equipped with automatic rotor speed control and is controlled mechanically.

Aircraft design

The appearance of the fuselage is the same as that of its predecessor, the An-10. It is made using armored steel, the thickness of which is at least 8 mm.

The cockpit is located at the front of the structure. Its size and location are the same as the An-10. It is completely sealed.

Its designers provide two emergency hatches. The upper one is designed for disembarking from an aircraft when landing without landing gear. The lower one is for ejecting the crew during the flight. The chairs are equipped with steel backs. They act as armor in case of attack from the tail. The thickness of these plates is 25 mm.

The cargo compartment was placed in the middle part of the main structure. It's leaky. Its floor represents one of the aircraft's power units. It contains units for sanitary stretcher installations, as well as mooring units.

The aircraft landing gear is mounted under the floor of the cargo compartment. The front and rear luggage compartments are also located here. To provide access to them, hatches are provided on the right side of the fuselage.

Important! The cargo compartment has three emergency hatches and 15 viewing windows.

A loading device is also mounted in the cargo compartment. It is represented by a crane beam. Its load capacity reaches 2.8 tons. There is also a lightweight mobile conveyor. It is designed for mooring, unloading, loading and other tasks. In addition, it houses a shooting installation equipped with a cabin for the shooter.

The tail part of the fuselage structure is slightly raised. This design feature makes it easier to load and unload large military equipment. The landing takes place through the hatch in the tail compartment.

The aircraft landing gear is wide. They are endowed with a high cross-country ability. This allows the aircraft to take off from unpaved, ice and snow-covered routes.

Areas of application of An-12

The An-12 aircraft gave a powerful impetus to the development of the state air force. It was used for conducting armed operations, exercises, moving military personnel, and also in emergency situations to search for victims. This machine also had an impact on the USSR Airborne Forces, being the first aircraft capable of simultaneously landing a large number of people and cargo.

In addition, the vessel was widely used for scientific research in the field of military aviation. Its reliability and resistance to any weather conditions made it possible to use it to solve the most difficult problems. Today, the aircraft, produced many decades ago, is still widely used both in Russia and abroad. More than 150 units, including copies made in China, still serve for the benefit of countries near and far abroad.

Its numerous modifications speak for themselves about the quality of the car, the last of which was released in China in 2012.

Among the many items there are full-fledged mobile laboratories and complexes for training Air Force personnel, as well as combat vessels, modified in accordance with the requirements of the time and experimental tasks. The most significant varieties of the An-12 were the following:

  1. Transport aircraft An-12A, An-12AP, An-12P, An-12B, An-12BP, An-12BK.
  2. An-12BK-IS is a model equipped for electronic jamming of ship signals.
  3. An-12BK-PPS and An-12PP are also models from the line of electronic warfare aircraft.
  4. An-12BP Cyclone - air weather station.

Participation of An-12 in hostilities

In the late 1960s, An-12 combat vehicles were used to transport soldiers during the entry of Soviet troops into Czechoslovakia. The period of the Afghan war made the An-12 aircraft one of the unofficial symbols of the people's grief. They were often called "Black Tulips". The ship was used not only for combat operations, but also for the delivery of humanitarian supplies, as well as the infamous “Cargo 200” - zinc coffins containing the bodies of soldiers killed in battle.

Units of equipment were more than once purchased by foreign states, which used them in military operations. Thus, India used An-12 aircraft in the armed conflict with Bangladesh in the early 1970s. The Egyptian government supplied An-12 with humanitarian aid and ammunition to African countries, where wars broke out every now and then in the 1960s. In addition, the purchase of vehicles of this model was carried out by Ethiopia and Iraq.

In addition to combat operations, An-12s were often used to transport large numbers of troops and evacuate civilians. Due to their colossal capacity, the aircraft could not only transport huge cargo on board, but also, in special situations, transport refugees from different countries. In this case, capacity was limited to the cargo and central compartment of the ship.
