Minibus GAZ-22171 Sobol

GAZ-22171 “Sobol” is a small minibus characterized by comfort and driving performance. The car is intended for family, office or tourist use.

The basic version of Gaz-22171 Sobol is equipped with 6 passenger seats and a table. The 10-seater version does not have a table, and the passenger seats are located in the direction of travel.

If compared with the Barguzin, the body of the GAZ 22171 is slightly higher. The level of comfort is comparable: GAZ-22171 is equipped with comfortable seats with headrests and armrests.

One of the main advantages of the minibus is that when developing the Gaz-22171 “Sobol”, specialists eliminated many of the design flaws of the GAZelle (GAZ-322132 / 3221). The developers completely redesigned the suspension and springs, thereby ensuring a smooth ride, like a fairly good passenger car. The interior of the Sobol minibus has become more spacious due to being equipped with a single rear wheel.

Reviews from GAZ-22171 owners

Many owners of the GAZ-22171, who previously operated Gazelle, find that it is made of better quality and has high reliability of the components. This is most likely due to the fact that the operation of the GAZ-22171 is rarely associated with the transportation of heavy loads, so the minibus breaks down much less often than its relative.

The power of the carburetor engine is clearly not enough for city use, and even on the highway it does not perform well. But the injection engine has proven itself to be reliable and unpretentious over the years of its operation. Its fuel consumption is significantly lower, and its power and throttle response are higher than those of a carburetor engine. The Cummins diesel, which is installed on the latest modifications of the Sobol, performed even better. With a diesel engine, the car can easily move in the general flow of passenger cars both in large cities and on the highway.

Thanks to the power steering, the car is easy to drive, and the high seating position gives excellent visibility on the road. The shock absorbers that are installed in the front suspension are quite weak, which is why the car often “nods” during sudden braking. The rear leaf spring suspension, on the contrary, is too rigid, which leads to a “goat” effect on bumps and uneven surfaces.

All-wheel drive GAZ-22171 models performed excellently in off-road conditions. These minibuses are often used in rallies, where they show quite decent results even without special training. Often this vehicle serves as a special vehicle for pulling out jeeps stuck in the mud. But you shouldn’t get too carried away with off-road driving. If the all-wheel drive Sobol gets into a rut left by trucks, it will get stuck there for a very long time. Moreover, it will only be possible to pull it out with the help of a tractor or truck.

Currently, GAZ-22171 can often be found on the secondary market. Less common are all-wheel drive vehicles, which can cost several times more. Such machines are valued among hunters and fishermen.

Modifications

"Sobol taxi" (GAZ-221703)

Volga cars have long been the basis of the taxi fleet of Russian cities, perhaps that is why, as part of the Russian Taxi project, a custom version of the GAZ-221703 “Sobol Taxi” was presented at the Gorky Automobile Plant, equipped with a 5-seater interior, decorated using plastic and easy-to-clean leatherette.

As on the Barguzin, the driver’s seat is separated from the passengers by a transparent partition. To the right of the driver there is space for luggage, and under the interior door there is a step with an anti-slip coating.

Due to the fact that the Barguzin served as the basis for the GAZ-221703, the car’s appearance becomes more “passenger-friendly”, thanks to the low roof and lifting rear door. However, the low interior of the car does not create discomfort for passengers, because even from the farthest passenger seat there are only a couple of steps to the door.

“Sobol Taxi” is equipped with an economical GAZ-5601 turbodiesel (with intercooler) with a power of 81 kW/110 hp. s.), which provides the dynamics of the car.

All-wheel drive passenger GAZ-22177 and 221717

There are also all-wheel drive passenger versions of Sobol and Barguzin. They carry the additional digit 7 in their indices.

The top version is considered to be 22177 in the “prestige” configuration - with a rotating side door, improved interior trim and sound insulation at the level of business class passenger models.

Minibus "Sobol Business" GAZ-22177 is a top-end car from the family of the "Sobol Business" line. The all-wheel drive vehicle is equipped with a 4x4 wheel arrangement, which will allow you to turn any trip into a vacation. The interior of the GAZ-22177 is no different from the GAZ-2217. The Sobol Business minibus is sold throughout Russia.

Models 2003-2010.

In 2003, Sobol Barguzin underwent major modernization. In addition to modified headlights and hood, interior improvements, the range of engines installed on the car has changed. The line added a turbocharged GAZ-5601 (95 hp) and an injection ZMZ 405.

After 2008, the GAZ 2217 model was supplemented with 2.4-liter Chrysler engines and the improved GAZ 5602; since 2009, the Ulyanovsk Motor Plant’s internal combustion engine (2.9 l) entered the series.

The side rear view mirrors have also changed - they have become more voluminous.

Technical characteristics of GAZ 2217 1998-2003.

The first issue 2217 ran from 1998 to 2003. The minibus was produced in a 10-seater version mainly for minibuses and had a simpler configuration. The six-seater minivan has already acquired a richer finish - it is considered a commercial vehicle.

The minivan's interior is equipped with a folding table, and the middle row seats are located so that the occupants can communicate with each other. The seats are soft and comfortable - passengers should feel comfortable on long trips.


The only inconvenient thing is that the seats are rigidly tied to their places, and it is not possible to rearrange them at your discretion in the cabin.

"Sobol Barguzin" from the first releases could be either rear-wheel drive or with a 4x4 wheel arrangement. In the all-wheel drive version, the front axle is constantly engaged, the axles are driven through cardan shafts. Due to its sufficient comfort, “Barguzin” is often used for family trips outside the city to nature.

GAZ 2217 (1998-2003) has the following technical characteristics:

  • The front wheel suspension on the 4x2 version is spring, independent;
  • Ground clearance – 150 mm for rear-wheel drive, 205 mm for all-wheel drive;
  • The weight of a fully loaded vehicle is 2800 kg (minivan), 2650 kg (minibus with 10 seats).

First generation Sobol Barguzin cars have the following modifications:

  • GAZ 2217 – minivan, six passenger seats;
  • GAZ 22171 – minibus, ten passenger seats;
  • GAZ 22177 – minivan with 4x4 wheel arrangement;
  • GAZ 221717 is a minibus with all-wheel drive.

On the first generation of Barguzinov, only two types of engines were installed:

  1. Diesel engine GAZ 560 (under license from STEYR MOTORS) with a power of 110 hp. s., volume 2.1 l.
  2. Gasoline carburetor engine ZMZ 406 with a power of 110 hp. s., volume 2.3 l.

Delivery animals

The family included the GAZ-2310 flatbed truck, the GAZ-2752 van and the GAZ-2217 and GAZ-22171 buses. The vans were branded “Sobol”, and the buses were branded “Barguzin”. The vehicles were equipped with the same wheelbase of 2760 m and independent suspension of the front wheels on levers and springs. Since the carrying capacity of the vehicles did not exceed 900 kg, a single-pitch tire was used on the rear axle. A variant with early exterior design is shown in the photo below.

The GAZ-22171 car was equipped with a roof that was increased in height and was produced in two versions - for six and for ten passengers, not counting the driver. A version of the bus with all-wheel drive was produced in small series.

Disadvantages of Sobol/Barguzin cars

The main weak points of the car are: steering units, gearbox, suspension.

Having traveled only a few thousand kilometers, many owners of Sobol cars are already experiencing problems with the gearbox: they have to either rebuild it or change it. By the way, problems with gearboxes are among the most common among Sobol car owners.

After the first 10 thousand km. On some Barguzin GAZ-2217, the power steering hose bursts: as a result, the entire engine can be filled with oil.

As for the suspension on the Sobol minibus, in addition to its rigidity (it shakes even on the back seat), some owners of GAZ-22171 already after 40 thousand km. have problems with tie rod pins, ball joints and pendulums. Some car enthusiasts have to change ball joints almost every year.

After 90 thousand km. There is a drop in engine power in Barguzin GAZ-2217 cars.

Car enthusiasts also have complaints about the quality of design and assembly. Even the new Sobol minibuses have uneven gaps, and the side door cannot be adjusted. After a year of operation, extraneous squeaks appear in some places, which can be eliminated with the help of sealant; On some cars the rear trunk door begins to knock.

Another problem with Sobol/Barguzin model cars is the problem with antifreeze: car enthusiasts complain that it constantly leaks.

In order to clean the fuel pump mesh on a Sobol/Barguzin car, you must first remove the fuel tank, which is extremely inconvenient.

There is no towing eye at the back of the car, so if your GAZ-2217 is stuck, you can only pull it forward, which is an obvious flaw of the engineers.

Chassis, transmission, steering and braking system

As for the Barguzin chassis, it has the following technical characteristics:

  • Gearbox – mechanical, five-speed, all gears are synchronized (except reverse speed);
  • Transfer case (for models with all-wheel drive) – two gears, with gear ratios 1.07 and 1.86;
  • Clutch – with one driven disc, hydraulic drive;
  • The front suspension for models with rear-wheel drive is independent, double wishbone, for models with all-wheel drive – dependent, on leaf springs. All types of suspension are equipped with a stabilizer and hydraulic shock absorbers;
  • The brake system is hydraulically driven, with two separate circuits for the front and rear wheels, with a pressure regulator and a vacuum booster.


    There are discs on the front axle and drums on the rear axle. Hand brake on cables, cables go to the rear wheels;

  • Steering – worm shaft – ball nut type mechanism, gear ratio 16.6; with hydraulic power steering, the column is adjustable in angle and height;
  • Rear suspension - leaf spring, with stabilizer and hydraulic shock absorbers;
  • The main gear (rear axle) is hypoid type, gear ratio 4.556 for the 4x2 model, gear ratio 5.125 for the 4x4 model.
