"Hephaestus" for Tu-142. New details of the modernization of PLO aircraft

The Tu-142, which according to NATO codification was named Bear-F, is a Soviet long-range anti-submarine aircraft.

At the initial design stage, it was planned to destroy enemy nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) in patrol mode. It was operated by the Navy for long-range radio or visual ocean reconnaissance, for search and rescue operations and tracking SSBNs.

History of Tu-142

In 1959, the new SSBN “George Washington” entered service with the US Navy, which a year later began carrying out patrol missions in the surrounding waters. In the 60s, the enemy's strengthening became even more powerful. The United States Army received five Ethan Allen and nine Lafayette submarines. These SSBNs could deliver a direct nuclear strike on strategic border facilities of the Soviet Union. The threat was incredibly acute, because at that time it was impossible to cope with such an attack by using missile defense systems.

In 1962, the USSR Ministry of Defense, through its own calculations, issued a conclusion that the most effective means against American SSBNs would be Soviet RPLS, which have twice the range of the Il-38.

In order to reduce the timeframe, it was decided to develop a new aircraft based on the Tu-95 RC and install an anti-submarine complex with the Il-38 on it. On 02/28/1962, by resolution of the Council of Ministers of the USSR No. 246-86, the development of the Tu-142 RPLS, which included the Berkut PPS, was launched.

The approval of the tactical and technical characteristics was agreed upon by the commanders-in-chief of the Navy and Air Force on April 20, and the preliminary design was ready on October 9, 1963. It was planned to build the complex for testing before 1966. However, it was not possible to meet such deadlines. Repeatedly it was necessary to make adjustments to the structure. On January 17, 1968, at a meeting of the Council of Ministers, a decision was made to prepare three copies of the Tu-142 for joint factory testing in 1968, and to begin state testing of the vehicle in the second half of this year.

The first flight on the experimental Tu-142 (tail number 4200) was carried out on June 18, 1968 under the guidance of test pilot I.K. Vedernikova. The second copy (No. 4201) was flown on September 3, and the third (No. 4202) on October 31, 1968

It was possible to send the aircraft to state tests only in 1970, and they lasted until 1972. Then the requirement for the aircraft to be able to be based on unpaved airfields was removed, and the aircraft was re-equipped with a lightweight landing gear and AB-60K propellers, which had better efficiency at maximum flight speeds. It was also not possible to transfer the anti-submarine complex from the Il-38; to do this, it was necessary to change some of its elements, in particular the on-board computer "Plamya-263". The Tu-142 DPLS was put into service in December 1972. The construction of the aircraft as a whole took almost 10 years.

Tu-142 Dimensions. Engine. Weight. Story. Range of flight. Service ceiling

Officially, the development of an aircraft designed for anti-aircraft warfare based on the Tu-95 began in 1963. The Tu-142 aircraft is based on the Tu-95RT airframe, equipped with systems for searching, tracking and destroying underwater targets. The new aircraft was equipped with sophisticated navigation equipment with high precision in determining coordinates as part of a data calculation system for weapon guidance. Previous attempts by the Tupolev Design Bureau to create an anti-submarine aircraft based on the Tu-95PLO, proposed in the early 1960s. ended in failure only due to the lack of such a powerful detection system.

Notable accidents[edit]

On 7 November 2009, eleven crew were killed when their Tu-142 crashed over the Tartary Strait near Japan during a training flight. Flights of Pacific Fleet aircraft were suspended pending an investigation into the crash. [52] There was no indication that the crew was using emergency equipment, although the lifeboat on board the aircraft was equipped with a device that transmits a signal in the event of an emergency. [53] Chief of the General Staff Nikolai Makarov believed that engine failure could have caused the accident. [54] A memorial service for the crew was held on December 16, 2009. [55] The search for the bodies of eleven crew members was suspended several times due to ice floes and bad weather.

The Tu-142 was also equipped with equipment for conducting electronic reconnaissance and additional electronic warfare systems “Kvadrat 2” and “Kub-3”. In accordance with Soviet aviation concepts, the Tu-142 had to be able to take off from unequipped runways, so the aircraft was equipped with a new landing gear with six wheels on each main strut and enlarged nacelles for them. Other improvements included an increase in wing area with new rigid metal fuel tanks and the installation of a set of electronic electronic control equipment.

Starting with the second prototype, the aircraft cabin was 1.5 m longer to accommodate the installation of new systems. The Tu-142 prototype first flew on July 18, 1968. In comparison with the Tu-95RT, with which there were many common features, it was distinguished by the absence of a ventral and dorsal gun turret, a smaller fairing of infrared equipment installed in place of a large dielectric fairing. New antennas were installed in fairings at the end ends of the stabilizer, replacing the "Harp" system, which was equipped with Tu-95RT aircraft. In May 1970, the first production vehicles were transferred to the anti-submarine formations of the Soviet Navy for testing in order to evaluate their flight performance.

After successful completion of test flights and comprehensive testing and evaluation of the capabilities of the Berkut-95 detection radar, the Berkut-95 detection radar was officially put into service in December 1972. The combat capabilities of the aircraft were declining due to their slow deliveries, and the 12 aircraft received by the Navy in 1972 (out of 36 ordered) were equipped with 12-wheel main landing gear, the same as on the first prototype. During the operation of the Tu-142, their ability to operate from unpaved airfields turned out to be in limited demand. In addition, flight performance data decreased due to the mass of the machines, and these two factors subsequently led to the emergence of a plan for modernizing the aircraft.

The modernized Tu-142 had equipped rest areas for the crew during long flights, and the main landing gear was replaced with lighter counterparts, which led to a weight reduction of 3,600 kg and, as a result, improved flight performance of the aircraft. This version of the vehicle did not receive a new designation (only 18 units were produced before the launch of the Tu-142M), only in Western documents the name was used (“Bea-F Mod. 1”). In 1972, the plant in Kuibyshev produced the last machine, which served as the standard for the production of Tu-142M aircraft at the Taganrog plant. The Tu-142M aircraft had an extended cabin and a new landing gear, but the equipment remained the same as on the previous aircraft. As a result of minor differences from the latest Kuibyshev-built aircraft, the aircraft produced in Taganrog became known in the Navy aviation as Tu-142, and not by the factory designation Tu-142M.

The development of increasingly stealthy submarines and experience in the use of anti-aircraft defense forces and means have shown that conventional sonar buoys are becoming less effective. And, conversely, hydroacoustic buoys with explosive sources of sound vibrations will find application. Therefore, the Tu-142MK aircraft combined the capabilities of improved radio sonar buoys and the Korshun target detection and tracking system. The first such aircraft made its first successful flight on November 4, 1975. An assessment of the new Korshun radar, a set of avionics and anti-submarine equipment revealed their dubious characteristics; it seemed that they could become obsolete even before the aircraft was put into service. As a result, in July 1979, a year before the Tu-142MK aircraft with the Korshun radar was accepted into service, it was stated that it needed significant improvements. Regardless of this, in 1978 the production of Tu-142MK vehicles began instead of the main model Tu 142M. The leadership of the Navy aviation decided to settle on its own system for choosing a designation for the new model.
