This arms company was formed in 1911, starting with the production of mopeds. The first horizontal gun was released in 1920. Somewhat later, based on the Browning, the first semi-automatic version of the twelfth caliber was created. In the early sixties, the company received a weapon project that used the kinetic energy generated by recoil. As in other areas of life, in the arms industry, versatility does not mean quality. At first glance, everything is convenient, but often you have to save on something. If the concept of universality is applied to weapons, then a lot of examples can be given that confirm the impossibility of designing universal barrels. But there are a number of examples in which all the best from different models were combined with one gun. Naturally, in practice such specimens proved to be extremely inconvenient; the main elements in them quickly failed. But let us pay tribute that there have been products that are exemplary to this day. One example is a universal pump-action weapon with a combined charge - the Benelli M3.
Description
Aluminum alloy was used to make the Benelli M3 barrel box. The butt and fore-end are plastic. There are products in which the stock is retracted upward, but in this form it blocks the aiming device. The sight is rifle, the front sight is a bit high, the rear sight is open or diopter. It is possible to mount collimator sights, flashlights and even target designators.
From the very beginning, the Benelli M3 shotgun model was created for military personnel and special services, and the first shotgun, released in 1980, was the most effective in self-defense. It is still in service with some special units in Europe today. Naturally, the Benelli self-loading shotgun is also used by hunters, but it is noteworthy that it was in Russia that hunting fans were able to consider the assault version of the M3 shotgun for hunting game.

General description of Benelli M3
The Benelli M3 Super 90 shotgun is a further development of the Benelli M1 shotgun from Benelli Army in the direction of versatility. From the very beginning, the Benelli M3 shotgun model was created for military personnel and special services, and the first shotgun, released in 1980, was the most effective in self-defense. It is still in service with some special units in Europe today. Naturally, the Benelli M3 self-loading shotgun is also used by hunters, but it is noteworthy that it was in Russia that hunting fans were able to consider the assault version of the M3 shotgun for hunting game.
Using the same automatic mechanism with inertial unlocking of the rotary bolt, the Benelli M3 shotgun also received an alternative mode of operation - manual reloading using a longitudinally movable forend - the so-called pump-action reloading.
Pump mode allows you to fire ammunition that produces too little or too much recoil, such as non-lethal rounds containing tear gas or rubber bullets.
In addition, a magazine cut-off was introduced into the design, which allows, when firing in pump-action mode, to load the gun with the bolt retracted back, one cartridge at a time through the window for ejecting cartridges. This mode allows, for example, to shoot one cartridge at a time with rubber bullets, having a supply of cartridges with combat buckshot in the store in case the situation worsens.
The magazine cut-off is controlled using a lever located next to the trigger guard. The selection of the “semi-automatic” - “pump” modes is carried out by a special rotating ring with a notch located in the front part of the movable forend. The cocking handle in self-loading mode is located on the right side of the bolt frame.
The receiver of the gun is made of aluminum alloy, the butt and fore-end are made of plastic. Options with a folding stock are available, but the upward folding stock when folded overlaps the sights. Sights are usually rifle-type, with a high front sight and an open or diopter rear sight. It is possible to install collimator sights, laser designators, and flashlights.
The Benelli M3 shotgun is widely used by various police forces around the world, and is also sold on the civilian market as a self-defense weapon.
Design
Benelli M3 has an unusual design, with which it can be charged using a movable forend or in automatic mode. Some are surprised that the recoil spring is located around the under-barrel magazine, and not in the butt, as before. A rotating bolt mounted on a carriage and in the firing position is considered non-standard.
The bolt rods are fixed to a ring that moves along the body of the magazine. The switch used to select the shooting mode is located on the forend and is represented by a ring with ears.
The external characteristics of the Benelli M3 are a little spoiled because the forend has angular type guides made of plastic material. They are located on the magazine, around its body part.
For shooting using a pump, a rigid connection between the forearm and the carriage is necessary. If you need to switch to automatic, you will have to open this connection. This is done simply and does not take much time - just a few seconds, and after that reloading will be performed due to the inertial movement of the bolt, as in conventional semi-automatic shotguns.
The trigger box has a button for switching the operating modes of the fuse. At the bottom there is a button that turns on the cutting off of ammunition. This allows you to quickly insert the desired cartridge. Probably, in other models this will seem like an excess, but taking into account all the design nuances of the Benelli M3, such a mechanism is simply necessary. When hunting, it will provide an invaluable service when you need to quickly change the charge.
The number of charges varies depending on the caliber of the magazine, which can hold no more than seven rounds.
The basic model is sold with two barrels – 50 cm for bullets and 65 cm for shot. Note that the shooter has the opportunity to buy different extensions and narrowings, taking into account his own discretion. The bore and chamber are completely chrome plated.
The stock is made of high quality, there are various options, it is possible to adjust the retraction and pitch, there is a shock-absorbing rubber cushion that reduces recoil force. In addition, the shooter himself chooses the most convenient design of the butt, up to the telescopic modification.
There is an option for additional coating of the metal elements of the Benelli M3 shotgun with special compounds - from the simplest oxidized to full chrome plating. This is not done for reasons of aesthetics, but in order to protect the surface during operation of the weapon in harsh climatic conditions. This is largely due to the increased level of humidity, because this is what makes standard guns unusable after the first hunting season.

Versatility usually has a negative impact on the functionality of any tool.
This is doubly true for weapons. Nevertheless, its history knows many examples of very successful combinations of several capabilities at once in individual samples.
Sometimes such masterpieces only demonstrated the flight of thought and the degree of skill of the gunsmith. But sometimes they showed enviable vitality and became role models.
BENELLI M3 Super 90 shotgun shooting
For adherents of “proper” hunting, the use of a semi-automatic weapon is usually unacceptable. And even the most inveterate “machine gunners” begin to wince when they hear the word “pump.”
Therefore, the combination of “two in one” usually causes genuine surprise and conflicting emotions. In Russia, such a “miracle” was known in the form of the extremely ugly SPAS-15.
Now in our stores you can purchase another model of gun with combined reloading. We are talking about the Italian model Benelli M3S90. In this article, this gun will be examined using the example of the M3S90 made by Kromo.

Design features
According to information from the manufacturer
, this model was developed back in the late 1980s. and was intended for self-defense and security forces. The gun is officially in service with some European police units and special forces. Thanks to a wide variety of designs and options, the M3S90 is also successfully used for hunting.
Moreover,
Presumably, for hunting purposes, this assault rifle is mostly used in Russia, fortunately, hunting with combat and conversion weapons is by no means a sign of bad manners.

The ability to fire in semi-automatic and pump-action mode determines the specific design of the gun. Thus, the return spring is located not in the butt, but around the rifle’s under-barrel magazine.
The butterfly valve, in working position, is fixed on the carriage. The latter's rods are welded to a ring that moves along the body of the tubular under-barrel magazine.
BENELLI M3 Super 90 shotgun partial disassembly
To select the firing mode, you need to turn the ring with “ears” located in the front part of the forend. If shooting is carried out in pump-action mode, a rigid connection of the forend to the carriage is necessary.
The handguard has angular plastic guides located around the rear of the magazine body, which somewhat spoils the appearance of the gun.
BENELLI M3 Super 90 shotgun branding
To switch to semi-automatic mode, you need to open the joint connection between the forend and the bolt carriage, which takes literally a few seconds. Now the inertia of the bolt will be used for reloading: the gun becomes a semi-automatic.

The push-button cross safety is located in the trigger guard. On the lower left side of the receiver there is a button to turn on the cutoff of cartridges in the magazine, which allows you to quickly insert the desired cartridge into the barrel.
Taking into account the specific design of pump-action and semi-automatic shotguns with an under-barrel magazine, this design feature can really be useful. Including hunting.

Magazine capacity, depending on the type of ammunition used, is up to 7 rounds. The M3S90 is supplied to the Russian market in a “European” version - with a plug in the magazine, limiting the magazine’s capacity to 2 rounds.
The gun can be equipped with various barrels - from 50 cm bullet to 65 cm shotguns. It’s clear that for most barrels you can purchase various kinds of replacement narrowings, extensions, etc. The bore and chamber are chrome plated.

The butt of the gun has a rubber shock absorber, as well as the now traditional ability to adjust the retraction and pitch. In addition, several versions of the stock are available - from telescopic to hunting.
And no one has canceled independent “tuning” yet. Options for coating metal surfaces are possible - from classic oxidation and anodizing to white chrome plating.

If everything is clear with the usual bluing, then the chrome-plated gun on the outside is supposedly intended for use in some very unfavorable conditions. Information about its use is contradictory - either by the marines of enemy states, or in heavy sea animal hunting.
Here I immediately remember Markevich and his mention of the Chukchi, for whom both the Berdan-2 rifle and the SKS in the northern seas were enough for literally one season.

Benelli guns usually make a good impression with their design features, quality of parts and neat assembly.
The M3S90 was no exception, with a few comments that will be discussed below.
The quality of processing of the bolt frame and bolt is especially impressive - there is nothing to complain about. BENELLI M3 Super 90 shotgun design of the moving system and bolt

In the last issue of “Hunting” we talked about the best, in my opinion, Turkish semi-automatic machine. So the quality of metal processing and this “Turk” cannot be compared with Benelli.
No matter what anyone says about the identity as Turkish and Italian gunsmiths, but, as they say in Odessa, “these are two big differences.”

The total length of the gun is 1040 mm. Barrel length – 50 cm. Weight of the gun – about 3.3 kg. There is a marking on the chamber indicating the possibility of using cartridges with a 76 mm sleeve.

On our “police” model, the front and rear sights turned out to be of a rifle type, and the rear sight has the ability to be horizontally adjusted.
On the top of the light-alloy receiver there is an anti-reflective strip, which is the beginning of the aiming line. No possibilities for mounting additional sights were found.

The double-sided swivels on the stock are handy and appear to be very durable. The ability to select the position of the receiver swivel is also a necessary option.

The black plastic of the forend and buttstock is certainly practical, but the quality of casting and subsequent processing leaves much to be desired - there are seams from casting, flash, and a medallion of the pistol grip of the butt is very carelessly embedded, screwed in place with some kind of furniture screw for a Phillips-head screwdriver.
BENELLI M3 Super 90 shotgun muzzle and delayed bolt
The procedure for filling the magazine with cartridges occurs quickly, the mechanism works quite smoothly. Disassembling the gun for cleaning is simple and does not require much time.

Shooting
The short barrel makes itself felt - the gun’s recoil and shot sound are much stronger than those of versions with a standard-length barrel. Some cartridges give a strong flash - the barrel is still short and not all the gunpowder is fully used in it.

The algorithm for switching firing modes, although not intuitive, does not cause any particular difficulties. In self-loading mode you can get a fairly high rate of fire.
Manual reloading is quite comfortable, but the handguard is too far from the receiver, which causes serious inconvenience when holding the weapon while shooting. For the same reason, the butt of the gun seems too long even for a person 180 cm tall - just the length of the shock absorber, which, by the way, absorbs recoil well.

Conclusion
Constructively and practically
An interesting gun that allows you to use ammunition of any type and with any load – from traumatic (which semi-automatics do not work with) to sporting and magnum cartridges.
Among the practical shortcomings, a decrease in the reliability of the gun was noticed when large debris hits the target between the fore-end and the barrel, up to the point of failure of the weapon.
Shotgun BENELLI M3 Super 90, cartridge fed into the barrel
Simply put, when cutting through dense thickets, it is better to protect the gun from getting branches and leaves into open mechanisms. But you have to pay for dual-mode reloading. As in any case with a sophisticated design - reliability.
BENELLI M3 Super 90 shotgun design features
When manipulating the shotgun, I noticed that the bolt release button was too small.
Among the shortcomings of the assembly, the traumatic muzzle cut immediately attracts attention - the barrel is cut without chamfering, which is strange for a weapon costing about 100 thousand rubles. Shotgun BENELLI M3 Super 90
But the biggest headache was caused by the protruding lower rings of the return spring, which did not allow inserting the barrel into the receiver without the use of tools (it was possible to press the spring ring with a regular door key).
An attempt to position the spring “upside down” led to “rubbing” of the bolt carrier in the rear position. I had to be satisfied with the first option, with slipping the key under the barrel breech during assembly.

Chrome plating of the external surfaces of metal parts is a controversial decision. On the one hand, this is quite strong protection against corrosion, and the combination of silver and black colors looks good visually.
A police gun, what can you take from it? But for hunting they still try to use less flashy weapons. And chrome plating is still not a panacea - scratches and chips of chrome during harsh use are unlikely to be avoided.

An increased magazine capacity for a hunter (not for a police officer or an athlete) makes sense only with a long barrel. However, the short, rigid barrel of a cylindrical drill shows excellent accuracy when shooting bullets and gives a very good scattering of buckshot.
That is why the “short” M3S90 is purchased not only by self-defense workers and athletes, but also by lovers of game hunting. Well, if you want to get a truly universal gun, then it is better to purchase an M3S90 with two barrels at once.

BENELLI M3 Super 90
The article was published in the magazine “Hunting”, September 2012
Operating principle
The Benelli M3 uses the automatic action of its predecessor M1 (M2), based on the principle of inertial recoil of the bolt frame and locking the breech with a bolt capable of rotating on the lugs. Gun automatics are created on the principle of using recoil together with the inertia of large moving parts, and all this is complemented by an internal inertial spring.
The Benelli M3 bolt group has a solid bolt carrier, a lightweight cylindrical bolt type mounted into the front of the bolt frame. At the front there is a pair of lugs, which, when the barrel is locked, engage with the barrel breech. There is a spring between the bolt and the frame. The shutter rotates thanks to a pin located in the upper part and moving along a shaped frame groove. It is the movement of the pin to the forward position that forces the bolt to rotate and enter and exit the stops from the grooves of the breech. The rear part of the frame has a pusher that connects it with a spring responsible for returning it back and partially located in the butt.
The frame is moved forward before the shot is fired, the bolt locks the barrel channel. When the return spring begins to create pressure on the rear of the frame, the inertial spring located inside is compressed, acting on the rear of the bolt. After the shot is fired, the gun moves back due to recoil; the bolt, locked behind the barrel, begins to make forward movements backwards. The frame tries to stay in place due to its own massiveness, so the inertial spring is compressed.
When the bolt moves, the pin moves along the groove, turning the bolt, which, by releasing the lugs from the clutch with the barrel, unlocks the breech. The residual pressure of the gases forces the frame and the bolt towards the butt, and the return spring is compressed at this time. The cartridge case is removed, and on the way back a new cartridge is supplied. When the bolt group returns to its initial position, the bolt moves forward along the frame and rotates along the axis, locking the barrel. Automation guarantees the safety of the entire system, its mechanism is reliable, and the number of parts is minimal. These features are most adapted in the Benelli M3 S90 Combo shotgun.

Design features and principle of operation
The M3 self-loading shotgun uses the automation of its predecessor - Benelli M1 and M2 - the inertial principle of rolling back the bolt frame and locking the barrel breech with a rotating bolt on the lugs. The automatic operation of the gun is designed according to the use of the recoil energy of the weapon together with the inertia of massive moving elements, supplemented by an internal inertial spring.
At the moment the bolt moves, the pin passes through a figured groove on the inside of the bolt frame, causing the bolt to rotate, the lugs disengage from the barrel and the breech is unlocked. Then the residual pressure of the powder gases pushes the bolt and bolt carrier towards the butt, while the return spring is compressed. Thus, the spent cartridge case is removed, and on the return stroke a new cartridge is supplied. When the bolt group returns to its original forward position, the bolt moves forward relative to the bolt frame, rotates around its axis and locks the barrel.
The automatic operation of the Benelli M3 shotgun is a reliable mechanism with a minimum number of parts, which guarantees the coordinated operation of the automatic operation of this weapon and ease of maintenance.
The main improvement and difference between this gun and the previous Benelli M1 and Benelli M2 models can be considered the possibility of pump-action reloading, that is, the Benelli M3 shotgun is dual-mode - the shooter can choose options for operating the weapon mechanisms - manual pump-action reloading with the forend or semi-automatic mode. When the manual reloading mechanism is turned on and, accordingly, when the gas engine is turned off, the Benelli M3 operates on the principle of a conventional pump-action shotgun, reloading by mechanically longitudinally moving the forearm back and forth along the under-barrel magazine guide. The movable forend is rigidly connected to the bolt frame by two steel rods, through which the shooter’s muscular force is transmitted to the bolt, forcing the system to work, eject the spent cartridge case, cock the mainspring and send a fresh cartridge to the breech. Thanks to the pump-action mode, it became possible to shoot ammunition from this shotgun that develops either very high or very low pressure of powder gases. Examples include shots fired with rubber bullets, tear gas projectiles, and high-velocity carbide bullets.
Changing the “semi-automatic” - “pump-action” modes occurs by rotating the corrugated ring, which is located in the front part of the movable forend. In the extreme forward position of the forend (the bolt is closed), this ring is located between the locking ring that secures the magazine to the barrel and the front edge of the forend.
Another advantage of the Benelli M3 shotgun is the magazine cut-off. It allows you to load the gun one cartridge at a time when shooting, driving the required ammunition into the chamber, with the bolt pulled back. Thus, the gun can be reloaded with one cartridge at any time without having to manually reload the entire magazine and search for the right cartridge by operating the fore-end, throwing out the wrong ammunition for the situation. This mode is useful, for example, when shooting with rubber bullets, the cartridges of which are loaded into an under-barrel magazine, but suddenly, if the situation worsens, you need to quickly replace the ammunition with a live cartridge with lead buckshot. In this case, the bolt is pulled back in pump-action mode, after which the required cartridge is thrown through the right window of the receiver, then by moving the forend forward, this cartridge is sent into the chamber. And the cartridges in the magazine are not fed into the tray due to the included magazine cut-off.
You can change the position of the cut-off using a small lever located near the trigger guard. It is quite easy for the owner of the gun to change the operating modes of this weapon and control the cut-off device. Everything is done conveniently and functionally, the ergonomics of the Benelli M3 are excellent.
The handle, which cocks the shotgun and sends the first cartridge into the chamber (in the Benelli M3 self-loading mode), is located on the bolt frame and is accessible from the right side, through the receiver window.
This gun is produced only in 12 gauge with a 76 mm chamber, that is, it is permissible to use both conventional 12/70 ammunition and 12/76 Magnum class cartridges.
Aluminum alloy was chosen as the material for the manufacture of the gun's receiver, which became possible as a result of a design solution for coupling the bolt lugs not with the receiver, but with the gun barrel, as a result of which the load on the receiver is reduced by an order of magnitude.
Sights are usually rifle-type: Benelli M3 shotguns are equipped with a high front sight and an open rear sight on the barrel; some modifications have a closed diopter rear sight on the receiver. You can equip the gun with a collimator or optical sight, flashlight, laser designator and other additional removable equipment.
The fixed stock, pistol grips and forend of the Benelli M3 are made of plastic, while the folding frame stock of the “Tactical” modification is made of metal tubes. The Benelli M3 barrel length in standard versions ranges from 500 to 660 mm, the length of such guns ranges from 1040 to 1200 mm. The weight of the M3 shotgun ranges from 2.8 to 3.6 kg.
Advantages and disadvantages
The advantages of the Benelli M3 include:
- possibility of recharging in two ways;
- any low-quality cartridge can be changed quickly, for which it is enough to pull the bolt by the handle;
- the automation works smoothly, the security system is reliable, and the gun is not difficult to maintain.
There are also some negative aspects:
- the gun is more intended for private use and is of little use for hunting;
- Factory-made cartridges should be used.

New in blogs
Well, let’s chat, perhaps, about a man’s pastime, which is called “hunting.” It is clear that there are all sorts of hunts: like, hunting to eat and drink, or... (for example). But how to deal with this, it’s clear - pour it and drink! Or ….
Hunting, brothers and sisters, it can also be quiet (there are mushrooms, berries), fishing and shooting. Fishing is when you throw a hook with a worm into the water and wait for the fish to swim - it takes a long time and you can fall asleep. That’s why “fishermen” sometimes tie dynamite to a hook instead of a worm - it turns out quickly, but loudly.
But I want to talk about shooting hunting. More precisely, about the gun. What is a hunter without a gun? I have already chosen one for myself and will tell you about it in a moment. But first, about hunting.
So! There are hunts in our area: for birds, animals, fish (sometimes, sometimes I shot a pike), for neighbors and enemies (including competitors), for weed animals (crows, wolves and homeless people). We won’t consider the last two any more, because THEY ARE NOW! You can otroviczo. Although, I ate a crow once... and zhif!
With fish, everything is simple: you need a sawn-off shotgun of 20 caliber, with cartridges loaded with “dust” (this is the smallest shot). It’s more economical than paluchaetso, and shot doesn’t matter when you eat. And everything about fish. Like, they shot back (gee-gee)!
We continue about the same hunt that men go on, and then they tell fairy tales. One, for example, was catching geese with traps. And it’s true! Khule: you need to eat something in the tundra. Animal hunting (oh damn, what a word!) hunting is like that, where you have to kill animals so that the darn can then be eaten.
Animals can be killed in different ways:
- Shoot from a firearm.
- Shoot arrows from crossbows and stones from slingshots.
- Traps and snares (Greenpeace is against this, by the way).
- Explode (they say that under the Soviets this is how cattle were slaughtered - the stores had horns and legs).
- To poison with poison (after such prey there is nizya - atravishso).
- Strangle with your hands (with a rope and a stick).
- Drown in water, kick.
- Burn with fire (well, like napalm).
- Just get along with the world like a class (damn nannying them - stupid ass).
Well, there are probably other ways to exterminate wild animals, but these are the main ones. Almost after all, I eat what I got, so I will talk about point 1: HUNTING WITH A FIREARM. The main thing in this matter is rouzho. And you need to choose it with thought about how you will use it.
Are they for geese?
Or to Misha:
Actually, I’ve been planning this article for a long time. I just went into the store here, saw it and decided (again): I have to take it. Because this is perhaps the best that is offered. And they offer a lot: both ours and imported ones - just like dirt. Eyes run wild, gyrus clings to gyrus! For self-defense, they take Vietnam-tested Mosbergs and Remingtons; for hunting, they take well-proven Brownings, IZhies and TOZs.
However, just as there is no universal car, there is no universal weapon. And there is something to think about. Personally, I started to think when, 100 meters from the village, wandering with a basket in one hand and small fish (over hazel grouse) in the other, I came across a trail like in the picture above, only water was flowing into it - Michal Potapych passed 10 seconds ago! After talking with the men and reading a lot of literature, I settled on this gun: Benelli M3 Super 90 , and now I’ll tell you why.
The Benelli Armi factory lies in the vicinity of Urbino, a city where the history of the Montefeltro family is intertwined with a rich tradition of weapons making and war, in which the Montefeltro family earned a strong reputation for political foresight and awareness. The first Benelli automatic shotguns with a steel receiver were marked standard, lusso, or an additional lusso if the receiver was matte and smooth, or the stock was engraved. Receivers were soon made from lightweight aluminum alloy due to its excellent performance. Only in 1973, in addition to 12 gauge weapons, 20 gauge was added. 20-gauge shotguns are as reliable as their big brothers, but the reduction in weight and size of parts, changing the weight ratio, makes them more convenient than 12-gauge shotguns. Benelli is synonymous with semi-automatic weapons, but the company also makes semi-automatic pistols and other non-hunting weapons.
PS: Who would doubt that the Italians make, perhaps, the best weapons. An example of this is the history of the Beretta 92F, which was adopted by almost all NATO armies and recommended by our coprologists as a service pistol. But why don’t our cops and specialists have shotguns, and why do our cops at traffic police posts and in cities carry machine guns? It’s scary to walk and drive past them! Why why why…
“Why, exactly, are you looking at this particular gun, dear friend Jeriho?” - you ask. And by the head! The main thing in a hunting rifle is accuracy, and Benelli is a sign. In addition, these guns are reloaded using an inertial bolt, and its undoubted advantage is its high response speed and insensitivity to the quality of gunpowder. It seems to be xim, with gunpowder. But no! Have you ever spat while cleaning your favorite Browning Gold because you didn’t have the required shot number and had to shoot with your uncle’s cartridges with his favorite “Falcon”, which is why the carbon deposits in the gas outlet cannot be dissolved even with acetone? Anyone who has not cleaned the gas outlet after using our gunpowder will not understand!
The Benelli inertial reloading system is recognized throughout the world for its precision mechanism, safety, durability and reliability. The genius of the Benelli System lies in the simplicity of its operation: the kinetic energy generated during the firing process pushes the gun back, and during this barely noticeable movement, the bolt spring is compressed and the action cylinder is unlocked.
The brevity and orderliness of movements ensures the ability to fire 5 shots in less than a second. The solutions used guarantee trouble-free operation and at the same time ease of maintenance. The variable geometry trigger provides a soft and controlled release.
I’m also looking at the Benelli M3 Super 90 because I’m not rich enough to have several guns for different hunts (rifled weapons separately): upland birds, waterfowl, animals large and small. A double-barreled shotgun is no longer enough for me; I like to load cartridges myself. Sometimes stronger, sometimes weaker. It’s more pleasant to sting what you felt with your hands and hit it with the first shot than to wonder after the fourth shot at the same duck and two obvious hits on it why it left, showing you a point on the fly! And here the magnum chamber allows you to use more powerful cartridges... and turn off the automatic mode by switching to pump-action! Hello, migratory goose, tough to wound!
There are barrels with a length of 700 mm and a super magnum chamber of 89 mm (Camo Mancino Varichoke interno – bindella ventilata – cm 70 – camera 89 mm Super Magnum):
Has anyone gone small bird hunting? If you hit it with even a 7-pointer at close range... there will be nothing to eat - the target has evaporated! Knowing that the hunt will be short, you can equip cartridges that are weaker and more spread out. Again, choose the choke for such a shot. Hello, Easter cake and quail, from the frying pan!
Benelli has used cryogenic treatment on an industrial scale to optimize the ballistic performance of barrels and chokes. At the same time, it was possible to reduce the sensitivity of materials under the influence of high temperatures generated during the firing process and avoid deformation of the barrel. The method involves gradual cooling of the material over 24 hours to a temperature below –100° Celsius. Thanks to this, it is possible to eliminate internal residual stresses and improve the mechanical characteristics of the metal. In the barrel, the tension generated under the influence of frictional heat and pressure is constant and insignificant, which ensures uniform vibration and expansion of the barrel during the shot. When fired, the sheaf of buckshot turns out to be wider, more uniform and uniform, with greater density, both in the central and peripheral parts of the sheaf. In this case, the characteristics of the shot do not change depending on the number of cartridges fired. The choke constrictions have an elongated shape and a smooth and gradual connection with the diameter of the barrel. The result is a smaller sheaf of buckshot without compaction and improved aerodynamics.
But you would have to go after the animal with a machine gun (that’s what hunters call a self-loading shotgun). And sometimes on such hunts you can’t have enough cartridges! The Benelli M3 has a magazine extension up to 7 rounds (plus one in the barrel) and a short (smooth bullet) cylinder barrel with rear sight and front sight. When shooting a bullet from a smooth-bore gun, the best results are obtained with a smooth cylinder.
The Comfortech System is characterized by a new weight distribution principle to ensure perfect balance, reduced recoil, new stock geometry, improved comb and butt plate design, and more advanced materials.
The stock is made of technopolymer materials and has boomerang-shaped longitudinal holes on both sides, the purpose of which is to increase the flexibility of the stock under recoil and reduce the impact on the shooter's shoulder. The stock and gel inserts (!) are designed as a single element, and are shaped to increase the contact surface with the shooter's shoulder and cheek and reduce the impact on the body during recoil.
The cheek rest ridge is always identical, but the butt pad changes depending on whether the shooter is right-handed or left-handed: the right and left shoulders are mirrored in relation to each other. The butt plate and comb change shape under impact force, absorbing vibration and reducing recoil peaks when firing both high and low energy cartridges. In addition, the butt plate is very easily and quickly dismantled even without the use of tools and can be changed to a butt plate of a different thickness when adjusting the barrel length. This makes the weapon pleasant to use and controllable, reduces shooter fatigue and increases efficiency, both when firing individual shots and during long series. At the same time, peak recoil values and barrel jerking are reduced.

Description
The Benelli M3 Super 90 smoothbore shotgun is a further development of the Benelli M1 Super 90 shotgun. The automatic operation of the M3 shotgun (like the M1) is built on the principle of using the recoil energy of the weapon in combination with the inertia of massive moving elements. The bolt group of the M3 shotgun consists of a massive bolt frame and a lightweight cylindrical bolt inserted from the front into the bolt frame. In the front part of the bolt there are two lugs that engage with the breech of the barrel when locked. Between the bolt and the bolt frame, inside the frame channel, there is a powerful inertial spring. A pin is inserted into the upper part of the bolt, which moves in a figured groove in the bolt frame and causes the bolt to rotate when it is longitudinally displaced relative to the bolt frame. At the rear of the bolt frame there is a pusher that connects the bolt frame with the return spring located in the butt.
Before firing, the bolt frame is in the forward position, the bolt is locked behind the barrel, and is in the extreme forward position relative to the frame. The inertia spring is only slightly compressed by the pressure of the recoil spring on the bolt carrier. After the shot is fired, the recoil force of the weapon begins to move back, and the bolt, rigidly locked behind the barrel, also moves with it. In this case, the massive bolt frame, due to its inertia, tends to remain in place, while the bolt moves backward relative to the bolt frame with compression of the inertial spring. As the bolt moves relative to the frame, it rotates and the barrel is unlocked. Next, the residual pressure of the powder gases in the barrel pushes the bolt back together with the bolt frame, compressing the return spring. In this case, the spent cartridge case is extracted and removed, and on the reverse stroke of the bolt group, a new cartridge is fed into the chamber. When the bolt group comes to the front position and the inertial spring is decompressed, the bolt moves forward relative to the frame and locks the barrel.
The description of the operation of the automation developed at Benelli looks quite complicated, but the result is a very simple and reliable mechanism with a minimum of parts, ensuring reliable operation and ease of maintenance. Also, the M3 smoothbore shotgun received an alternative mode of operation - manual reloading using a longitudinally movable forend. This mode allows, for example, to shoot one cartridge at a time with rubber bullets, having a supply of cartridges with combat buckshot in the store.
The magazine cut-off is controlled using a lever located next to the trigger guard. The selection of the “semi-automatic” – “pump” modes is carried out by a special rotating ring with a notch located in the front part of the movable forend. The M3 shotgun is widely used throughout the world as a police and civilian weapon. Of course, it is possible to replace the plastic forend and buttstock with wood (walnut).
The Benelli M3 Super 90 shotgun is in service with the Italian carabinieri and is widely used by various police forces around the world, including the GSG-9 anti-terrorist group in Germany. It is curious that the German company is exporting “Super 90” to the USA, although it itself produces a self-loading “police” shotgun N&K.511 with automatic control based on the removal of powder gases and a 7-round magazine.
