Desert Micro Dynamic Rifle Technology
(
MDR
) is a multi-caliber line of bullpup semi-automatic rifles, submachine guns and battle rifles designed and manufactured in West Valley City, Utah, United States by Desert Tech (formerly Desert Tactical Arms).
A second generation version of the rifle is marketed as the Desert Tech Micro Dynamic Rifle eXtreme
(
MDRX
). [1] [5] [6]
MDR made its first public debut in 2014 at the Shot Show. [6] [2]
Design[edit]
The Desert Tech MDR is a conventional gas-operated bolt-action bullpup rifle. The gas system features a gas piston located above the barrel and a 6-position manual gas regulator. [5]
The MDR rifle is ambidextrous. [4] [2] [7] The MDR contains a reversible port for forward and side discharge, as well as an inspection window that allows tool-free changes to the forward discharge side. [7] A non-return ambidextrous charging handle is mounted on both sides of the pistol, and two- or three-position safety/switch and magazine release levers are provided on both sides of the pistol grip. [5] The rifle is compatible with Desert Tech caliber conversion kits, which allow caliber changes. [6] [2] This provides a unique feature in which the rifle chassis can accept both intermediate rounds and full-featured rifle rounds on the same serial numbered platform (such as 5.56×45mm NATO and 7.62×51mm magazines NATO).
The pistol's outer shell is made of impact-resistant polymer with an aluminum receiver. [5]
The .308/7.62 MDR has been durable tested for 10,000 rounds with .308 win 150 grain FMJ American Eagle, 7.62x51 149 grain American Eagle, 7.62 m80 ball US Surplus and averaged 1 failure per 2,000 rounds . [8]
MDR .308/7.62 update program [edit]
The 2022 MDR's victory in .308/7.62 received public feedback, leading Desert Tech to develop a gas and exhaust system upgrade program in 2022 to improve the rifle's ammunition tolerance without having to frequently adjust the gas setting. [2] This upgrade is considered a Gen 2 MDR gas system. [7]
Desert Tech publicly criticized MDR on January 10, 2019. Desert Tech directly attributed the most vocal criticism of the platform to InRangeTV, in collaboration with Forgotten Weapons Company, which demonstrated numerous glitches in the system that were determined to be caused by various ammunition. loads used in the gas system, December 13, 2022 [9] In addition to the criticism, Desert Tech provided a presentation with a technical analysis of the root causes of platform failures and the resulting improvements to the Generation 2 gas system. As an additional incentive, Desert Tech announced, that upgrading their Gen 2 MDR gas system should be covered under their warranty program for all owners. [8] The created Generation 2 gas system received positive reviews from InRangeTV on February 18, 2022. [10]
MDRX redesign[edit]
A variant of the Micro Dynamic Rifle eXtreme, MDRX, [11] was produced and sold as a standalone firearm in 2022. Improvements to the firearm include the following: an improved high-impact polymer, [3] an improved trigger, [3] an improved gas block, [12] [3] and a new "Ratchet" compensator. [13]
The firearm was offered in .300 BLK, 6.5 Creedmoor, along with its original .223/5.56 and .308/7.62 calibers[1][5], as well as 20″ barrel and side ejection options. [3] This upgrade is considered a generation 3 MDR gas system. [7]
The Desert Tech MDRX 5.56/.223 conversion kit includes the barrel, magazine catch, magazine insert, bolt head and ejector chute.
A California-compliant variant was produced with a 20-inch barrel, shark fin grip, reduced magazine size, and a California-compliant Ratchet compensator to qualify for the rifle's faceless restrictions. [13]
The MDRX with its various caliber kits is rated at 1-2 MOA by the manufacturer. [14]
Desert Tech - weapons of the future
Desert Tech produces precision weapons and ammunition. It is interesting primarily for its engineering solutions and the guaranteed high quality of its products. Desert Tech is one of the progressive companies that is moving the global arms industry forward, striving to develop and construct weapon models that are superior in quality to existing analogues.
One of the weapon models of this company is the HTI rifle, which is a bolt-action large-caliber sniper rifle, strong and durable, designed for shooting at a distance of 2 km or more, while maintaining sufficient bullet penetration.
HTI is equipped with a Picatinny rail system for mounting various sighting equipment in the right places on the weapon. The rifle's forend is lightweight tubular. For convenience and to protect the shooter from frost and heat, the butt is equipped with a rubberized shock-absorbing cheek pad, easily adjustable in height. The butt also has a recoil-absorbing butt plate and an adjustable monopod rest. The trigger guard has been enlarged to allow shooting with winter gloves. A double-sided safety is conveniently located above the trigger guard, which, thanks to its low profile, does not cling to anything, but at the same time, thanks to the large corrugation, it is easy to switch with your finger, even by touch. The coating of the rifle is durable and of high quality. The HTI rifle is designed according to the “bullpup” design, i.e. the magazine and trigger are located behind the handle, which already makes it very short. But unlike most bullpup guns out there, the HTI is well balanced and has a center of gravity that allows the HTI to be held comfortably in all positions. The length of the HTI rifle is further reduced by a telescopic bolt. The HTI turned out to be only 1162 mm long, which is 286 mm shorter than the well-known large-caliber Barret sniper rifle of .50 BMG caliber. At the same time, the HTI rifle is also large-caliber, has the same barrel length and has the same accuracy as the Barret. But due to its shorter length, the HTI is more compact and maneuverable, and is 5.5 kg lighter than the Barrett. In addition, it is also multi-caliber, and uses not only the .50BMG caliber, but also the .375CT, .408CT and .416Barret calibers. Calibers are changed by changing the barrel, bolt and magazine. To remove the barrel, you just need to loosen the four screws on the receiver, and to remove the bolt, unlock the latch and slide the butt plate. The entire caliber change procedure takes no more than a minute, which allows you to change calibers quickly, depending on current requirements. In this case, the rifle will not require re-zeroing; you will only need to enter pre-calculated corrections into the sight. The barrels of the HTI rifle are match-grade, “hung” in the fore-end for accuracy, the barrel locking system makes modification (bedding) of the stock unnecessary. Combined with a clear, informative trigger, easily adjustable in force and length, this makes the HTI rifle very accurate.
Another system is the SRS-A1 rifle, which is similar in design to the HTI. The SRS-A1 is a medium caliber rifle designed for shooting in difficult conditions at ranges from 45 m to 1.5 km.
Its length, depending on configuration and adjustment, ranges from 850 to 980 mm, which is on average about 300 mm shorter than most sniper rifles, and even some assault rifles. The length of the SRS-A1 stock is adjusted by simply attaching additional attachments to it. The magazine latch is double-sided. The rifle is multi-caliber, and allows the use of .308Win, .260Rem, 6.5Creedmor, 6.5x37Lapua, 7mmWSM, .300WinMag and .338LapMag calibers. The accuracy of the SRS-A1 when using Desrt Tech ammunition is 0.5 MOA at a distance of 90 m. The most amazing thing is that the specially designed Desert Tech silencer, when attached to the SRS-A1 barrel, not only does not reduce the accuracy of the rifle, but even improves it.
There is also the SRS-A1 Covert model with a shortened barrel and a total length of 686 mm, i.e. shorter than some submachine guns. This model uses .308Win, 300WinMag and .338LapMag calibers.
In addition, Desert Tech produces a semi-automatic multi-caliber MDR carbine that uses small calibers: .223Wylde, .308Win, and (with a special kit) .300Blk. The MDR is 665mm long, which is shorter than any standard assault rifle.
Desert Tech also produces high quality ammunition in .223Rem, .308Win, .338LapMag, .375CT, .50BMG and 6.5CM calibers. Cartridges from Desert Tech (except .223Rem) use innovative thermally independent gunpowder, according to our assumption, the Hodgdon brand, thanks to which the cartridges operate stably in the temperature range from -28 to 73 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature deviation of the muzzle velocity is no more than 8 m /s, which gives very stable vertical hit accuracy.
Tests have shown that with Desert Tech cartridges it is possible to achieve accuracy of 0.5 MOA or better, the bullets have a good ballistic coefficient and wind resistance. Desert Tech claims that the best shooting results from their weapons can be achieved by combining their weapons and ammunition. But most likely Desert Tech cartridges will show good results on any other weapon models.
In addition to weapons, Desert Tech also develops and manufactures muzzle devices (silencers and DTK), optical, collimator and night sights, auxiliary equipment and accessories for weapons, tool sets, weapon cases and covers, software for precise ballistic calculations, and much more. . In short, in Desert Tech you can find everything a modern high-precision sniper needs.

Official named MDR/MDRX updates[edit]
On January 28, 2022, a MDRX Micron conversion kit was announced that provided the purchase of a Wylde 11.5" 5.56/.223 barrel, replacement handguard, ejector plates, new Raiden flash hider, and replacement side ejection bolt. Bullpup with an overall length of 23.43 inches. [15] These kits allow standard MDRX and MDR rifles to be classified and regulated as short barrel rifles (SBRs), requiring the user to contact the appropriate regulatory authorities before installing the conversion kit into their rifle. These kits went on sale January 29, 2022.[16]
On March 18, 2022, a collaboration was announced between Desert Tech and BLK LBL Bipods to develop, manufacture and sell the Mantis handguard. The handguard is a 9-inch, 16.7-ounce aluminum handguard with integrated bipod that replaces the factory polymer handguard and an improved zero position for handguard-mounted parts. [17] Aluminum handguard with integrated bipod fits 16" and 20" barrels. MDR/MDRX and allows for simultaneous use of M-LOK under the handguard as well as the built-in bipod without interference.
Desert Tech MDR-C: comparison, advantages and disadvantages
Desert Tech MDR-C the H&K UMP has one more . The PM-84 Glauberyt Custom (82) and SCAR-L PDW are closest in terms of damage to the Desert Tech MDR-C . The drop in damage for each subsequent meter of the declared range is 3.5 units, approximately the same indicator is produced by the SCAR-L PDW (3 units), and the owner of the maximum damage among the H&K UMP SMGs has an indicator of 3.1.
The optimal range of the weapon was ten meters, but in practice the SMG will kill with one shot to the head beyond this range by two to three meters. By the way, when using a silencer within the stated range, the player can easily kill his opponent with one hit to the head.
The rate of fire is approximately identical to the guns described above, but is an order of magnitude inferior to such guns as Tavor CTAR-21 (840), Skorpion vz 83 (950), MPA10SST-X (1000), Magpul FMG-9 (1120). When used at medium distances in hip shooting, it has minimal ammo dispersion. Thus, you can emerge victorious from a firefight with an attack aircraft at medium distances without even using a scope. Damage multipliers to limbs ( arms/legs/head ) and to the body are: 0.9 / 0.9 / 4.5 / 1.0 . It is rational to aim for the head when shooting.
The advantage of this barrel can be considered virtually no recoil. Recoil is undoubtedly present, but it is very easily controlled, thus, using this SMG in battles is much easier than any other weapon of this type. The gamer will not be able to install a handle of his choice, but in this case it is possible to attach the barrel and sight modules to this SMG.

Historical reference
Smith & Wesson Firearms Co. is an American arms company founded in 1852 by Horace Smith and Daniel Wesson. The company has maintained its popularity for many years thanks to the production of revolvers. The company's headquarters are located in Springfield, Massachusetts.
In 1860, in the Russian Empire, the first multi-shot hand-held weapons (Lefaucheux revolvers, see Lefaucheux M1858) were received by the Separate Corps of Gendarmes. In 1869, the Galan revolver was adopted by the navy. In 1871, Russian cavalry officers received " S&W Model 3 " revolvers (4.2-line Smith-Wesson revolver). It was a very advanced model for those years, which received a gold medal at the International Exhibition in Vienna in 1874.
S&W Model 3
According to the instructions of the Russian side, the revolver was modified and received the designation “Russian Model”. Soon more than 250 thousand copies arrived from the USA to Russia. It is noteworthy that these revolvers were also manufactured by the German company for Russia, and in 1886, after all the modifications and production adjustments, the Tula Arms Plant began producing revolvers and cartridges for them.
A special cartridge caliber was developed especially for these models: .44 Smith & Wesson Russian (the cartridges produced in Russia were called 4.2-line Russian ). Later, in 1895, the Russian army switched to the Nagant revolver, and the Smith & Wesson remained in service with the police forces.

S&W M&P R8: comparison, advantages and disadvantages
The revolver has good damage, second only to several guns of the same type: COLT Python Elite (130), Rhino 60DS (130), Mateba Autorevolver (140). Despite this, the stated firing range is higher than that of all compared revolvers. This indicator allows you to inflict critical damage on the enemy at medium distances, and a well-aimed headshot will kill your opponent outright even beyond the optimal range, since the drop in damage per meter is less than two units (1.7). Damage multipliers to the body and limbs: to the head - 3.4; in arms/legs – 1.0; into the body - 1.0. The rate of fire of the S&W M&P R8 is practically in no way inferior to top-end semi-automatic pistols, such as the “general’s pistol” M1911A1 (290) and SIG Sauer P226 C (320).
Like any other secondary weapon, with damage approximately equal to 100 or higher, it will kill an enemy with maximum armor and health with three body shots. The recoil is very weak; at medium distances you can easily hit the same point twice, with almost no effort. Many fighters use it from the hip in any firefight, since the ammo spread is very small. The S&W M&P R8 comes with a special Leupold Deltapoint red dot sight with x1.2 magnification.
