Long-range sniper rifle Lobaev Arms DXL-3 “LONGSTRIKE”

The DXL is a unique long-range high-precision rifle on a special modular aluminum chassis. While it has the advantages of a classic design (absorption and rigidity), it is still made from the aluminum preferred by many shooters.

So we're confident we've gotten the best out of the two layouts. This rifle demonstrates more than decent accuracy and is designed for the most severe operating conditions.

The philosophy of this model is to achieve maximum range in a specific caliber. Its entire design is aimed precisely at this.

At the same time, you do not have to solder your retina when shooting from the 338 Lapua Magnum. Finding a good optometrist may only concern owners of other rifles. The DXL-3's 338 LM recoil is comparable to a 22LR and you can train as much as you need. Without risk to your valuable health.

We have developed a new magazine bolt group for this model - DUKE - a development of the KING group installed on SVLK.

The aircraft grade aluminum stock is foldable for portability when choosing a long barrel length.

A LOBAEV Hummer Barrels match barrel completes the picture.

New in blogs

Following its tradition, the weapons company Lobaev Arms is taking small steps but regularly updating the model line of its high-precision rifles. Today it’s the turn of the DXL-3 long-range rifle with the loud name “Retribution” and we present its 2017 model.

The new model of the Lobaev rifle is universal: it is suitable for both athletes who practice long-range shooting and army snipers.

.338 Lapua Magnum caliber sniper rifles in their arsenal : in the USA these are McMillan Tac-338 and MSR, in England - AI AWSM, in France - PGM 338, in Germany - G29.

This ammunition makes it possible to hit targets at ultra-long distances, while the dimensions and weight of the weapon remain very acceptable compared to large-caliber rifles chambered for 12.7 mm and higher. This cartridge has already been tested in combat in Iraq, Afghanistan and eastern Ukraine.

In Russia, the .338 Lapua Magnum is still making its way with difficulty. And although domestic manufacturers have already created a number of their own models (ORSIS T-5000, VSV-338 of the Kalashnikov concern, VS-8 of the Tula KBP, etc.), Russian snipers are still using the British AI AWSM rifles and the Finnish Sako TRG-41 . Lobaev Arms tried to solve the problem of import substitution in this area by releasing the DXL-3 “Retribution” rifle in this caliber, which the developers themselves dubbed the “long arm” of the sniper.

You have to pay for quality and a brand name - the cost of the DXL-3 "Retribution" rifle is in the highest price segment and is twice the average price of conventional rifles of the same caliber.

The .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge (metric designation 8.68x70 mm) gives the shooter the ability to confidently engage targets at a distance of one mile . The DXL-3 was born in May 2014 as a response to the desire of some users to have a rifle on an aluminum chassis with accuracy that is not inferior to the best rifles with a composite stock. The resulting dispersion of approximately 1/3 MOA shows that the Lobaev brothers and their team were able to solve this problem.

DXL-3 (Duke eXtrusion Lobaev, 3rd model) “Retribution” is developed on the basis of the King bolt group from the most powerful single-shot Lobaev rifle SVLK-14C “Twilight”.

The new bolt group, called Duke, was lightened and redesigned for magazine feeding, but retained the high rigidity of its ancestor. The bolt has three lugs, the rotation angle when unlocking is 60°. The Duke bolt group is fixed in the weapon with a thick layer of compound and has integrated hooks to absorb recoil. The barrel is free-floating, match, made in-house (Lobaev Hummer Barrels), barrel material – steel 416T.

On the firing line with the DXL-3 “Retribution” sniper rifle.

The T-Tuner muzzle brake-compensator, also of an original design, is highly effective, reducing the recoil of the very “angry” .338 LM cartridge to the level of recoil when shooting .308 Win. Another cylindrical brake, the C-Tuner model, is optionally available, allowing it to be fixed on the barrel at any angle for more precise firing adjustment.

The Picatinny rail, which comes with a base 20 MOA cant angle, is removable. It is long enough to accommodate both the optics itself and night attachments for it. There are shorter accessory rails at 3, 6 and 9 o'clock, as well as a separate mounting point for a Harris bipod.

Release without warning, adjustable in three parameters, force varies in the range from 500 to 1500 g . The rigid aluminum stock (the second letter in the rifle's designation indicates its manufacturing technology - eXtrusion) is made of light aluminum alloy; for operations in cold weather it can be supplemented with “warmer” carbon fiber linings. The rifle stock is made of aircraft aluminum, folding, equipped with a quick-lock hinge and reduces the length of the weapon in the stowed position to 1076 mm. The cheek piece and butt plate are adjustable; the butt plate has a Picatinny rail at the bottom for installing a support leg or a special rest for benchrest.

The DXL-3 rifle served as the basis for a model chambered for a more powerful .408 Cheytac cartridge called the DXL-4 “Sevastopol”, as well as a lighter DXL-2 “Scalpel” rifle in .308 Win or 6.5x47 mm Lapua caliber.

Differences in the 2022 model

In general, the 2022 model retained all the main features of its predecessor, the bolt group was radically redesigned and the rifle was noticeably lighter. The 2022 DXL-3 has lost weight by as much as 700 grams, however, according to the developer, this has not affected the noticeable recoil, which is comparable to the recoil of a .223 Rem caliber weapon.

The main idea of this rifle: the implementation of maximum range in a specific caliber.

If this is indeed the case, then hats should be taken off to the developers of the DXL-3 “Retribution”: the .338 Lapua Magnum caliber, for all its ballistic advantages, has a reputation among shooters that it is not the most pleasant in terms of shooting comfort: when using the .338 LM, even cases of retinal detachment, nosebleeds, toothache, etc., not to mention traditional bruises on the shoulder and pain in the shoulder joint.

Russian long-range sniper rifle DXL-3 “Retribution”

The 2022 DXL-3 is an evolution of a unique long-range precision rifle that has proven itself both in sniper competitions and on the battlefield. The new modification of the rifle is significantly lighter than the previous one, although it still has a familiar look. The competition for the maximum range of a confident shot has continued since the very advent of sniping as an art of marksmanship. Regular wars and technological progress contribute to the growth of this parameter. At the same time, the process of increasing the firing range cannot be called uniform. There are both breakthroughs and periods of relative calm. One of these periods was the 1970s, when the most common sniper caliber of that time - 7.62 mm - exhausted all development possibilities. Created back in 1963, the .300 Winchester Magnum cartridge became the crowning achievement of the development of this caliber. Its use allowed the sniper to confidently hit targets at a range of up to 1200 meters, but it also showed that a further increase in effective firing range would be possible only with an increase in the caliber of the weapon. Specialists from the Finnish company Lapua solved this problem; in 1987 they created a new cartridge .338 Lapua Magnum (8.6x70 mm), which can already be called famous. This cartridge pushed back the line of a well-aimed sniper shot to 1.5 kilometers and beyond.

It was this caliber that was chosen when creating the DXL-3 long-range sniper rifle from Lobaev Arms. DXL-3 stands for Duke eXtrusion Lobaev, 3rd model. The rifle was first presented to the general public in May 2014, becoming the embodiment of an alloy of aluminum, steel and high technology. The main idea of the project is to create a sniper rifle on an aluminum chassis with accuracy that would be similar to the best models with composite stocks. Assessing the results of the work of Russian gunsmiths, it can be noted that the idea turned out to be quite successful: the technical accuracy of the new product is only 0.35 MOA, the official Lobaev Arms website noted.

The basis of this long-range rifle was the new Duke bolt group, which was created on the basis of the famous King group, which is the “heart” of another development of the company - the SVLK “Twilight” ultra-long-range rifle. Compared to the King bolt group, the Duke group was lightened and redesigned for magazine-fed cartridges, while retaining its main advantage - high survivability. The Duke's bolt box received an integrated recoil pad, and the Picatinny rail for mounting sighting devices became removable. The letter D in the name of the rifle refers to the bolt group, and the letter X - eXtrusion - is related to the chassis, or rather its production technology.

The bolt group of the DXL-3 long-range rifle rests on a thick layer of bedding compound. The purpose of this layer is to effectively dampen vibrations that invariably arise during the process of firing a rifle. Based on the stated accuracy of the weapon, this technical innovation really works; the compound material copes with the task perfectly well. The loads arising during shooting are effectively absorbed by the rigid stock, which is made in the form of a single part made of extruded aluminum alloy. The strength of this alloy, achieved without compromising the weight characteristics of the rifle, is the key to reliable and long service life of the weapon in any, even quite difficult operating conditions. It is worth noting that metal is not the most pleasant material to the touch, especially in the summer heat or winter frosts. Taking care of the shooter, Lobaev Arms specialists have provided the option of equipping their rifle with lightweight carbon fiber linings.

The stock of the DXL-3 long-range rifle was made folding; thanks to this solution, the overall length of the weapon can be reduced during transportation from 1350 to 1076 mm. The cheek plate and butt plate of the buttstock are adjustable, while on the butt plate at the bottom there is a Picatinny rail, which allows you to install a special rest on the weapon for benchrest (a type of technical shooting sport - shooting from a machine gun) or a support leg.

The updated model of the 2022 rifle still demonstrates more than decent accuracy when shooting (0.35 MOA), and at the same time is designed for the most difficult operating conditions. The philosophy of this model declared by the manufacturer is as follows - the implementation of the maximum firing range in a specific caliber. The entire design of the rifle is aimed at achieving this philosophy in reality.

As the rifle manufacturer notes, the shooter will not have to solder the retina, getting good recoil when shooting with the .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge. Finding a good eye doctor can only concern owners of other sniper rifles, while the recoil of the DXL-3 in the .338 Lapua Magnum is comparable to that of the .223 Rem (5.56x45 mm), so the shooter can safely train without any risk to his health .

The updated 2022 rifle model received a completely new bolt group, chassis and updated stock, while maintaining a set of unique characteristics - excellent range and accuracy of fire. The lightweight magazine bolt group, created for the 2022 model, is 700 grams lighter, and the lightening has no effect on the recoil of the weapon. The rifle's stock, made of aircraft-grade aluminum, is still foldable and makes it easier to transport the weapon, especially when choosing a long barrel length. HG (Heavy Gun) barrel contour 740 mm long (780 and 820 mm available optionally) with 6 fullers with a total length of 1350 mm (1076 with the stock folded). Also, the 2022 “Retribution” model received a new anatomical handle. The LOBAEV match barrel completes the picture, which largely provides the weapon with a range and accuracy of fire unattainable for other rifles.

The price declared by the manufacturer for the updated model of the DXL-3 long-range rifle of the 2022 model is 724 thousand rubles, the rifle is available for order on the company’s website.

Tactical and technical characteristics of the DXL-3 “Retribution” (from the Lobaev Arms website): Overall dimensions: length - 1350 mm (1076 mm when folded), height - 210 mm, width - 43 mm. Weight - 6500 g. Barrel length - 740/780/820 mm. The cartridge used is .338 Lapua Magnum, or .300 WM. The bullet speed at the muzzle is 900 m/s (for .338LM). The maximum effective firing range is 1800 m. Technical accuracy is 0.35 MOA/10.5mm between centers (5 shots at 100 meters). Trigger force (adjustable) - 500-1500 g. Magazine capacity - 5 rounds. Operating temperature range: -45 to +65 °C
