Hunting carbine "Maral": description, characteristics and reviews

The Maral carbine and its modifications are aimed at commercial hunting of large and medium-sized game. The ammunition used is a 7.62*51 mm caliber cartridge. The gun is a non-self-loading design with a frame that slides longitudinally. The copies are created on the basis of a sporting rifle of the “Deer” type, equipped with mechanical “direct action” bolts, which are locked by turning not the handle, but the cylinder on the side. This solution provides advantages in recharging speed. In addition, the Maral carbine has a comfortable stock, excellent characteristics in terms of balance and accuracy of fire.

Description

The weapon modifications in question were presented at the national exhibition “Design-97”. The first mention of the models is in an article by A. Vasiliev from 1998 (Magnum publication).

It is worth noting that the Browning Maral carbine is equipped with a locking barrel mechanism that allows the bolt to rotate into three firing positions. At the same time, the figured groove of the frame and the bolt protrusion are aggregated with it. Due to the movement of the bolt frame forward, the charge from the clip is sent through the front cut into the chamber. Then the ejector tooth moves into the cartridge groove, the bolt rotates and the lugs move beyond the receiver stops. The trigger translator flag falls into the socket of the bolt frame, blocking the assembly from self-activation.

Operating principle

When the trigger of the Maral carbine is pressed, the combat spring mechanism acts on the firing pin, which breaks the cartridge primer. Synchronously, the trigger releases the stop of the translator, which rotates along with the flag, freeing the bolt frame from being locked.

After moving the bolt frame back, the lock rotates and is released from the receiver stop latches. The right side of the stop interacts with a spiral-type groove in the barrel. As a result of this operation, the extraction of the used charge occurs with a displacement. Subsequent retraction of the bolt frame helps remove the cartridge case from the chamber using an ejector. In this case, the reflector rests on the frame of the bolt part, after which the cartridge case is ejected. At the same time, the hammer is cocked, and for the next salvo you just need to push the frame part by the handle all the way forward, pressing the trigger.

Hunting carbine "Maral": features

Open-type sighting devices make it possible to fire from 100 to 300 meters, regardless of the installation of an optical installation with fixing brackets. In this case, the transverse dispersion of charges during the firing of 4 rounds at a distance of 100 meters does not exceed 95 mm.

The bolt action with a unique handle mechanism allows you to fold the carbine and carry it in any position, slinging it on a belt over your shoulder. The configuration of the bolt and its aggregation with the frame and receiver reliably protect the mechanism from dirt and disruption of the lubricant consistency. The bolt carrier moves only forward/backward, which facilitates rapid mechanical reloading of the weapon. The designers wisely placed the fuse near the trigger guard, ensuring that the trigger and bolt are locked when activated, preventing the possibility of an accidental volley.

Hunting carbine Baikal-146 Maral

The Baikal-146 Maral hunting carbine, which is still at the development stage and has not gone on sale, was presented by the Kalashnikov concern at the annual arms exhibition Army 2017, opened according to an established tradition in the Patriot Park near Moscow. This hunting carbine is distinguished by a straight-action bolt, which is increasingly becoming part of the new trend and trends in hunting fashion. The popularity of Western designs such as the Merkel HELIX, Strasser RS14 and new developments such as the Steel Action HS is leading to more and more bolt action hunting rifles appearing on the market. And domestic gunsmiths are trying to follow it by developing new models.

The designers were inspired to create this carbine by sporting rifles used to hone shooting skills. On their basis, the design department of the Kalashnikov concern constructed the Baikal-146 Maral carbine, which was original for the domestic hunting industry and well suited for high-speed shooting. As of today, it has not yet entered mass production. But this is not far off. Although the manufacturer has not yet announced the date it will go on sale, it will most likely be next year. Nevertheless, all visitors to the exhibition were able to appreciate its technical characteristics.

The carbine barrel does not have a chrome-plated barrel, like the entire line of new products from the concern, such as Baikal-145. But the developers assure that this will not affect the barrel life in any way, and it will remain at an acceptable level for such a weapon. Any type of sight can be mounted on the receiver. A Picatinny rail is provided for its mounting. You can use the carbine without sights, since its design allows you to adjust the front sight vertically and horizontally. All this makes the carbine an indispensable weapon for targeted shooting. The receiver is placed in the stock in a free-hanging manner so that it does not touch the fore-end.

To increase the rate of fire, the manufacturer has developed a system for quickly reloading the carbine, which is performed with one light movement of the handle. The cartridges are fed from a single-row removable magazine, which has an original locking method used on sniper rifles.

You can read about the pros and cons of a detachable magazine in the article “Magazine in hunting weapons”.

Therefore, its strength and reliability are considered confirmed. There is a safety on the shank of the bolt, which allows you to silently put the carbine on the safety with one movement of your thumb and remove the weapon from it in the same way.

The price and availability of other hunting rifles can be checked in the supplier catalog.

Carbine "Maral": disassembly and assembly

Incomplete disassembly of the weapon in question begins with removing the clip. To do this, press the magazine latch, then press with a small object on the other latch on the left side. While pulling the box cover, deactivate the safety and press the translator flag with the hammer cocked. The bolt frame is retracted and removed together with the bolt part from the barrel box.

The assembly order is carried out in a mirror order. To mount the bolt frame, you will need to first align the ledge on the right stop in the shaped groove in the receiver, and then align both elements with the guide elements of the bolt. After matching the stops and grooves, both parts are wound in and moved forward until they stop. If the trigger is disengaged from the cocking mechanism, after removing the bolt frame, it is inserted through the hole in the box on the barrel by turning counterclockwise until it engages with the trigger.

Carbon for the paddock. Hunting carbine Browning Maral Reflex Compo

Developed on the basis of the Browning BAR semi-automatic, the Browning Maral non-automatic carbine with a “straight-action” bolt handle (Quick Reloading System) has been sold for many years. For the autumn hunting season of 2022, the “maral” family has been replenished with a new model, Browning Maral Reflex Compo.

The Browning Maral Reflex Compo hunting carbine on the left side is indistinguishable from modern semi-automatic Browning BAR series

The Reflex Compo carbine is optimized for driven and stand-up hunting, offering shooters a lightweight weapon, high strength carbon stock and a factory-installed red dot sight.

The previously presented Browning Maral Reflex carbine was equipped with a rail for mounting an optical sight. The Compo version got rid of it, but the holes in the receiver for its installation remained

The Browning Maral Reflex Compo is available in .308 Win. and .30-06 Spr. In both cases, the capacity of detachable magazines is 4 rounds. The fluted barrel, 510 mm long, is blued, and the muzzle is threaded M14×1 with a protective nut.

The stock and forend of the new “Maral” are made of carbon fiber; there are friction inserts on the handle and other contact surfaces. The combination of a relatively short barrel and a “carbon” stock provides a short overall length of the weapon (991 mm) and a weight of only 2.99 kg. The Browning Maral Reflex Compo has standard controls: the magazine release is located in front of the trigger guard; cocker under the thumb; linear bolt handle on the right side.

From the editor. When choosing a weapon with an open-type collimator sight for hunting (for example, Kite Optics K1), you should remember that the possibility of an aimed shot from such a complex may disappear with the first drops of rain.

An obstacle (a drop of rain, a snowflake, a speck) that appears in the path of the light beam between the protective glass of the emitter (on the left) and the reflective surface of the lens of any open-type collimator sight can deprive the shooter of the opportunity to make an aimed shot

The fact is that water that gets on the protective glass/lens of the diode turns the electronic sight into a pumpkin, and placing the lens in a recess does not allow you to quickly restore the functionality of the device.

Complete disassembly

The Maral IzhMash carbine is completely disassembled only in case of excessive contamination or when it is placed in long-term storage. First, partial disassembly is carried out, the technique for which is indicated above. Then the connecting screws on the stock are unscrewed and the barrel elements are separated from the box. Next, the pin securing the trigger mechanism is carefully knocked out. A clip is separated from it, securing the circuit magazine to the barrel box.

The elements of the trigger device are fully serviceable and do not require additional disassembly. Dismantling of the shutter is provided only in case of disruption of its normal operation. To do this, knock out the fixing pins, separate the bolt, ejector and firing pin from the part. The weapon is assembled in the reverse order of disassembly.
