> Weapons and army > The smallest pistols in the world
The first guns required two or three people to operate. The desire to have a powerful argument in any situation literally “at hand” first led to the appearance of the guns we are familiar with, which could be carried over the shoulder. Then the cavalrymen adapted shortened guns to the saddle. Then they shortened it a little more... And that’s how the first pistols appeared.
A serious race has begun for compactness and rate of fire. In the era of breech-loading weapons, very short multi-barreled pistols - “pepperboxes” (piperboxes) - were popular for a long time. Their ultra-compact version had only two barrels, but it literally fit into a suit pocket and gave the owner a very good chance to say his last word in an unexpected dispute.
This is how the famous “derringers” (named after the American gunsmith who made capital on a successful design) appeared - double-barreled “last chance pistols”. (It was the “derringer” in the third part of “Back to the Future” that “Mad Dog Tannen” used as an argument).
The advent of unitary cartridges made it possible to increase the ammunition capacity without increasing the thickness of the pistol. At first, flat magazines held only five or six rounds - but such weapons were unusually flat compared to similar pistols of the revolving system. Today, the “fierce little ones” are almost as good as their older brothers in terms of power and magazine capacity.
Here are the 10 smallest handguns you can shoot in the world.
Double Tap
Dimensions: 99x17x130 mm
Double Tap is a pocket pistol for self-defense from . It is made of the “derringer” type and has two vertically located trunks. Double Tap is available in two versions - with an alloy frame and titanium frame. The edges of the gun are smoothed and there are no protruding parts. You can easily carry it even in your jeans pocket. A distinctive feature of the Double Tap is the ability to store two spare rounds in its grip.
Seecamp LWS 32 Auto
Dimensions: 51x17x108 mm
The Seecamp LWS 32 Auto prototype with a 6.35 mm caliber was developed and patented in the 70s of the last century by the young talented gunsmith Larry Seecamp. In 1985, production of the model was discontinued. After that, up to the present time, a model with a caliber of 7.65 mm is produced. A distinctive feature of the Seecamp LWS 32 Auto is the exclusive use of cartridges with hollow-point bullets. Conventional cartridges with a jacketed bullet simply do not fit into the magazine. As soon as it went on sale, Seecamp LWS 32 Auto immediately became wildly popular in the USA. Of course, this “baby” is quite capable of taking a person’s life.
The operating principle of traumatic pistols
Trauma was created so that a person can protect himself from enemies in a difficult situation. Traumatic weapons are available in the form of small pistols, revolvers or mini-guns. The magazine size depends on the model. It can hold from two to ten rounds. A larger number is contrary to the law. Small-sized trauma equipment is designed to work at a distance of 5 to 7 meters. Operating principle:
- Insert a magazine or load with 2-4 bullets.
- Remove the safety and cock the hammer (if necessary). Sometimes this is not required when the gun is self-cocking.
- The firing mechanism (trigger mechanism) fires a shot.
The devices do not have a barrel rifling. Almost every pistol is equipped with a safety guard that protects the device from unauthorized discharge. There are variations of traumatic weapons that can combine several types of self-defense devices: the use of light, gas and traumatic ammunition is acceptable. Both pistols and small-format revolvers are popular, but there are many more options with a magazine.

Submachine gun "cedar"
The KEDR submachine gun was created on the basis of the PP-71 submachine gun (Design by Evgeny Dragunov) by the eldest son of E. F. Dragunov, Mikhail Dragunov.
The weapon is designed for the 9x18 mm PM cartridge. Automation works by using the recoil energy of a free shutter; the shot occurs when the shutter is unlocked. The receiver is rectangular, stamped. The 120 mm long barrel is rigidly attached to the receiver, to which are attached a pistol grip, a magazine receiver and a folding stock.
Characteristics of the KEDR submachine gun | |
Caliber, mm | 9 |
Cartridge used | 9x18 PM |
Weight with magazine for 30 rounds (without cartridges), kg | 1,57 |
Length with stock folded, mm | 305 |
Barrel length, mm | 120 |
Initial bullet speed, m/s | 310 |
Rate of fire, v/m | 1000 |
Magazine capacity, cartridges | 20 or 30 |
Sighting range, m | 25 |
A special feature of the submachine gun is the modular design of components (parts), which allows for its incomplete disassembly without the use of tools: a magazine, a receiver cover, a return spring with a guide, a bolt, a trigger mechanism and a safety switch.
The safety switch blocks the trigger and pushes the bolt stop into a groove on the bottom plane of the bolt, thereby preventing reloading when the safety is on. The switch-safety flag in this position partially extends into the hole for the index finger formed by the trigger guard, which allows you to determine by touch in the dark whether the weapon is ready to fire. When the translator is in the middle position, single shooting is ensured, in the uppermost position it is automatic.
After all the cartridges have been used up, the magazine feeder raises the stop, which locks the bolt in the rear position. A combined rear sight is used, which automatically switches when the butt is moved from the traveling position to the combat position and back. When the stock is folded down, the rear sight shield with diopter rises; when folded, the rear sight shield with a slot rises. This ensures ease of aiming both when shooting from an outstretched arm, and with the butt resting on the shoulder.
Sights are open type. The front sight is mounted on the barrel at the front wall of the receiver, the rear sight is mounted on top of the folding butt attachment.
The weapon is distinguished by good accuracy, both during single and automatic shooting. At a distance of 25 m, a circle with a radius of 5 cm contains 100% of hits during single shooting and 50% -. when firing in short bursts, which ensures guaranteed hit of the target with the first shot (or first burst) at close combat range. Despite the relatively high rate of fire (up to 1000 rounds per minute), it fires in short bursts of 3-4 shots.
A silencer and a laser target designator can be mounted on the weapon.
Whirlwind submachine gun
It is a shortened version of the silent machine gun “Val” (without a stationary muffler). Special 9x39 mm cartridges are used (sniper SP-5 and armor-piercing SP-6) with subsonic bullet speed. Although the automatic weapon operates on the principle of removing powder gases and the “Whirlwind” is sometimes called a small-sized machine gun, it is still a submachine gun.
This is due to its low ballistic characteristics (due to the short barrel and low muzzle velocity) and short effective firing range.
The trigger mechanism allows for both single and automatic fire. The high penetrating ability of the SP-6 cartridge bullet ensured the destruction of protected targets at a range of up to 200 meters. At this distance, the PP penetrates a 6-mm steel plate while maintaining its lethal effect behind an obstacle. Therefore, reliable destruction of targets wearing body armor of protection classes 1-3, as well as those in vehicles, is ensured. At a distance of up to 150 meters, a bullet can pierce a car engine block.

In the seventies of the last century, the defense industry of the USSR began to develop and create small-sized automatic small arms. The overall process was codenamed "Bouquet". Mostly the models were supposed to occupy a niche between the Makarov and AKSU, used in the units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Myself
Derringer DA 38
length: 122 mm
The Derringer DA 38 is still considered one of the best pistols for self-defense. The name of the pistol comes from the name of the American gunsmith Henry Derringer, who designed the first model in the nineteenth century. The first Philadelphia "derringer" was compact, reliable and affordable. He was in great demand among card players, women of easy virtue, merchants, travelers and adventurers. These days, the Derringer DA 38 has found its fans in the police ranks. The innocuous appearance of the Derringer DA 38 is very deceptive. The mini-pistol has recoil that can dislocate the shoulder of an untrained person.
