MMG pistol R-446 "Viking" Yarygin (MR-446) with a metal frame

The MP-446 Viking was created on the basis of the PYa pistol for export. The main difference between the Viking and its prototype is the frame, which is made of polymer rather than carbon steel. Less significant innovations include grooves for mounting a tactical flashlight or laser designator in the front of the frame, a different form of sighting devices and a bolt stop lever. Otherwise, the pistol is practically no different in design from the PYa.

The automation works according to the scheme of using recoil with a short barrel stroke. Locking is carried out using the lowering breech of the barrel, which enters with its rectangular protrusion located above the chamber into the window for ejecting spent cartridges of the bolt-casing. The reduction occurs when the inclined surface of the internal groove in the breech boss of the barrel interacts with the axis of the bolt stop. The barrel is made of stainless steel by cold forging, and its bore is chrome-plated.

The trigger mechanism is hammer-type, double-action with automatic safety cocking. The double-sided safety levers are located on both sides of the frame, above the handle. When turned on, the hammer is locked in any of its positions, the trigger, the sear and the bolt-casing are blocked. The bolt stop lever is located on the left side of the frame. The ejector is also an indicator of the presence of a cartridge in the chamber.

The magazine latch is located on the left side of the frame, at the base of the trigger guard, and can be easily moved to the right side. The box magazine holds 17 rounds with a double-row arrangement, as well as a double-row exit. Sights consist of a front sight and rear sight, fixed in a dovetail groove with the possibility of making lateral adjustments. The front and rear sights are equipped with white inserts to simplify and speed up aiming in low light conditions.

Flaws

Large weapon width; the trigger, closed on the sides, in the absence of a safe decocking lever, cannot be moved to the forward position manually; the safety catch makes handling the weapon more difficult, but this drawback is minimized with regular training; the strongly protruding magazine release button creates the danger of its spontaneous detachment and falling out of the handle; The workmanship is not of high enough quality for export weapons, which are used not by the army, but by ordinary citizens.

The first production samples of the Viking had a serious drawback - the trigger rod passed too close to the magazine and due to play, the magazine could catch it while attaching or detaching the magazine, which led to a shot. This defect was soon corrected by changing the thrust geometry. The stores of the first Vikings were equipped with lids that were shaped like the lids of the PYa stores. Such covers turned out to be fragile and many owners cracked. However, pistols are now produced with thickened caps of a different shape than the problem was resolved. The manufacturing quality of pistols sometimes causes criticism and depends on the batch. Not everyone is comfortable with the side thumb ridge on the handle.

The most serious disadvantage of the Viking pistol is the problem with spare parts and magazines, which are very difficult to find in Europe. Only two magazines are included with the pistol, and people purchasing it for practical shooting competitions are faced with a lack of them on sale. After 8,000 rounds, the Vikings’ most mechanically weak parts begin to break, but now Izhmekh produces inexpensive spare parts kits with the most problematic parts. To increase the reliability of the firing chamber, it is recommended to use a lubricant composition called Atomic Assembler, which significantly reduces friction and eliminates most possible delays when firing, including with low-quality cartridges.

Viking pistol MP 446 design

The pistol's automatic operation uses recoil energy with a short barrel stroke. The barrel bore is locked using a swinging breech, which engages with the bolt casing behind the extractor window with a rectangular protrusion. Disengagement occurs when the shot is fired, when the bolt casing moves back, dragging the barrel with it, through the earring of which the bolt stop lever is threaded.

The barrel is made from high-quality weapon steel with anti-corrosion additives, and the inner surface of the barrel is coated with high-quality chrome plating.

Double-action trigger type, with an external trigger. The built-in safety system automatically puts the trigger on the safety cock; the pistol is also equipped with a mechanical safety, the control flags of which are located on both sides and are convenient for operation with one hand. When the mechanical safety is turned on, the trigger, trigger and bolt movement are simultaneously blocked. The shutter stop control lever is located on the left and cannot be moved to the right. The extractor tooth also serves as an indicator of the presence of a cartridge in the barrel.

The magazine release button is located on the left side of the handle by default, but if necessary, it is reset to the right. The magazine is double-row, metal, holding 17 rounds, arranged in a checkerboard pattern. The sighting devices are mechanical, presented entirely with adjustment from right to left and adjustment of the distance of the aimed shot, and the front sight is rigidly fixed to the bolt casing.

The sights have small marks painted with light paint to make aiming easier in the dark.

Description of the pistol Grach Yarygin MMG R-446 (Viking, Baikal)

Model of a Yarygtna pistol with very accurate execution.
Designed for training work with the Viking pistol. The length of the model is 190 mm. Looking at this sample, you immediately understand how thoroughly the Glatcher company works on its pneumatics, but oh well... this is a lyrical digression.

The body of the MMG Grach R-446 Model is made of weapons-grade alloy; to protect against harmful influences, all open parts are covered with bluing.

The Viking MP 446 model completely replicates its combat counterpart in appearance.

The safety of the Yarygin pistol goes on both sides, so the model is equally convenient for right-handed and left-handed people.

All the main parts of the MMG R 446 have retained their mobility; you can twist the bolt, assemble and disassemble the pistol, and do any other training lesson, except shooting, of course.

A fixed sighting device consisting of a rear sight and a front sight is used as a sighting device.

The magazine release button is located on the left side of the case next to the trigger guard; when you press it, the magazine can be easily removed from its seat.

The caliber of the pistol is 9 mm, it is chambered for 9*19 cartridges, and the magazine holds 18 rounds.

The combat counterpart with this cartridge has an effective firing range of 50 meters, and when using the 9*21 cartridge - 100 meters.

The model will be a good addition to the collection of any gunsmith and will attract the attention of your guests if it hangs on the wall.

The MP-446 'Viking' pistol was developed in the late nineties of the twentieth century at the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant (IZHMEH). The basis for the MP-446 was the Yarygin PYa pistol, which was adopted by the Armed Forces and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in 2003. The MP-446 pistol was created as a sporting weapon, as well as for export. The MP-446 differs from its progenitor mainly in the frame material (polymer instead of steel), sights and the shape of some parts. Unfortunately, the MP-446 inherited the somewhat angular shape of the handle, as well as a trigger that was closed on the sides and lacked a mechanism for safely decocking the hammer.

The MP-446 pistol is built on the basis of automation, using recoil energy during a short recoil of the barrel and its rigid locking. The barrel is locked by skewing it in a vertical plane, with one large protrusion in the breech behind the window for ejecting cartridges in the bolt. Reducing the breech of the barrel to disengage from the bolt is carried out using a figured cutout in the boss under the barrel, interacting with the axis of the bolt stop. The pistol's slide is made of carbon steel, the barrel is made of stainless steel, and the frame is made of impact-resistant polymer. The trigger mechanism of the pistol is double action, with an open trigger. The trigger is covered on the sides by bolt protrusions, which avoids the cocked trigger from getting caught on items of clothing and ammunition when removing the weapon from the holster, but makes it difficult to release it safely. The non-automatic safety is double-sided, located on the frame, and when turned on, blocks the trigger, sear and bolt. When the safety is on, the trigger can be blocked both in the cocked and deflated state. The pistol is fed from detachable double-row box magazines with a capacity of 17 rounds. The magazine release latch is located at the base of the trigger guard, and the shooter can move it to any side of the weapon if he wishes. After all the cartridges from the magazine are used up, the pistol bolt remains in the open position on the bolt stop. Sights are fixed or adjustable, sports type, the rear sight is mounted on the bolt in a dovetail groove. On the frame under the barrel there is a special guide for attaching a laser designator or flashlight.
