The PMM pistol (Modernized Makarov Pistol) is a Russian-made self-loading semi-automatic pistol, developed for the modernized 9x18 PMM ammunition in the early 1990s by designers Pletsky, Shigalov and Ivshin under the Grach R&D program. It has been produced since 1994 (at the same time it was adopted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation and several other law enforcement agencies of Russia) at the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant.

PMM pistol - video

By the end of the 1980s, it became obvious that the pistol complex in service did not correspond to the changed conditions for the combat use of personal weapons - the widespread use of personal armor protection required increasing the penetrating effect of the bullet and improving the accuracy of fire. In the early 1990s, a modification of the PM for the new high-pulse cartridge 9x18 PMM was proposed for a competition for a new army pistol. Thanks to the new shape of the bullet, weighing 5.54 g (versus the previous 6.0 g) and the initial speed increased to 420 m/s, ballistics improved, penetration increased, and the likelihood of ricochets decreased. Under the new cartridge, at the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant, B. M. Pletsky and R. G. Shigapov created a sample that received the designation “modernized Makarov pistol” (PMM0 index 56-A-125M) and was mass-produced by FGUG! "Izhevsk Mechanical Plant" since 1994.

Description

70% of the PMM pistol parts are interchangeable with the PM pistol. The pistol has a reinforced frame and increased bolt weight. The PMM chamber is equipped with spiral grooves, which allows the use of high-impulse 9x18 mm PMM cartridges for firing. When fired, the pressure of the powder gases presses the walls of the case into three grooves on the walls of the chamber, holding the case in the chamber until the bullet leaves the barrel and the pressure decreases, after which the case is extracted and ejected. The maximum pressure in the gun barrel with the new cartridge increased by 15%, which slightly increased recoil.

— the PMM-8 has a standard Makarov pistol magazine with a single-row arrangement of cartridges;

— the PMM-12 has a double-row magazine at the base, which turns into a single-row neck. This scheme made it possible to do without changing the design of the frame and shutter.

The magazine cover protrudes slightly forward, which gives support to the palm and can somewhat speed up reloading. The shape of the handle has been changed to a more comfortable one, which has improved the conditions for aiming and shooting offhand from the right hand. The rear end of the handle has a notch for a more secure hold. Changing the retention devices can significantly improve the accuracy of pistol fire - some estimate the increase in accuracy by 12 times, others (primarily specialists from Izh-Mekh itself) - by 2-2.5 times. Sights are open type - front sight and rear sight with a slot.

However, the PMM cartridge never found widespread use. In addition to the problems common to the 1990s, which made it difficult to launch mass production of new ammunition, the fear that they would start firing high-pulse cartridges from standard PMs also played a role here, which could lead to accidents and injuries. Since the 9×18 PM cartridge remained the main one, the screw grooves on the walls of the chamber were also removed, so that the PMM chamber is now similar to the PM. PMM pistols were supplied to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Federal Security Service, and in small quantities to the army.

Design flaws

Springs in magazines work under overstress, so they quickly lose their elasticity, which leads to delays when shooting. Poor quality plastic from which the feeder is made will cause cracks and wear or breakage of the feeder tooth.

Options and modifications

PMM-8 - model chambered for 9×18 mm PMM with a magazine for 8 rounds;

PMM-12 - model chambered for 9x18 mm PMM with a magazine for 12 rounds;

IZH-70-100 (IZH-70-17A) is a sports pistol, model 1994, chambered for the 9×18 mm PM cartridge, has a magazine for 12 rounds and the appearance of a PMM pistol (differs in an adjustable sight).

“Baikal-442” is an export modification chambered for the 9×18 mm PM cartridge, a sports pistol. In September 2015, certified for sale in Russia as a sports training pistol

IZH-71-100 (since September 2008, produced under the name MP-71N) - a service modification chambered for the 9x17 mm K cartridge, magazine capacity 10 rounds.

Why was the Makarov Pistol modernized?

The modernized Makarov pistol, or PMM, is a nine-millimeter Makarov pistol, Russian-made, the drawings of which were developed and then designed by Shigapov and Pletsky back in the early 90s of the twentieth century as part of the R&D theme “Rook” and produced by the Izhevsk plant. This pistol took part in the competition for a new army pistol with the designation “Rook-3”. If the PM was first made due to the need of the Russian Army for a small-sized, comfortable and non-dangerous pistol for self-defense for officers, and in the same 1950 they also developed the Stechkin pistol, APS, which was already used for self-defense of privates and tank crews. Specifically, the PM, until the 90s, was the main weapon of self-defense for the military and the main weapon of the police. It was supposed to surpass the properties of the TT Pistol, the Tokarev pistol. And the PMM firearms began to be produced already in ninety-four. It is necessary to realize that by the end of the 80s, personal armor protection was being extensively introduced into most armies of various states. In addition, the active activity of terrorist organizations has made it necessary to develop a firearm with effective shooting, which uses massive cartridges of a larger caliber with enormous stopping and penetrating effect, and high fire power. All these properties put the cartridge on par with the 9X19 Luger caliber cartridge. With all this, the basic PM solutions were preserved, which have proven themselves more than once over 40 years of successful use.

0 Aristarchus 01/27/2017 19:47 As an armchair theorist, I’ll say that the pistol is not clear for what purpose 1. It was created for the purpose of using reinforced cartridges, but in the end they were abandoned 2. Small magazine capacity - the 12-round magazine does not function well, the spring in the magazine is to blame the same as the GSh-18 (in general, I don’t understand why a country that has created high-quality weapons, not only small arms, and that constantly launches rockets into space, cannot create a normal magazine for a pistol!) 3. The PMM+ only has a comfortable handle, and There is no point in replacing PM with PMM, except in the police, but not for the army! Because the cartridge is weak, modern army helmets can confidently hold at least 1 9x18 cartridge, not to mention body armor.

0 Andrey V 01/27/2017 07:49 pm Good review... I just noticed that the PMM has a bar without knurled notches between the front sight and the rear sight. This knurling was used to absorb light glare from the barrel at the time of aiming. Probably saved money. Although to be honest, who knows why this is needed. The PMM, despite the fact that the handle is a little wider, fits very well into a standard holster. Very nice handle for proper grip fixation. An excellent pistol for everyday service and not often, but concealed carry. For constant concealed carry, it is still too big and heavy.

This pistol has one big drawback, in my opinion of course! very ineffective magazine removal. who knows will understand.

This minus has been corrected more than once.
Solved by replacing the handle. At a minimum, patrol and fab defense make grips with convenient magazine release...maybe someone else does. Reply | Reply with quote | Quote 0 alexander 01/27/2017 19:56 And show the cartridge for PM and for PMM, and how to distinguish them??? How about loading ALL 12 rounds and shooting them all before the bolt stop?? As for the weak spring in the magazine, the problem is “partially” solved: disassemble the magazine, lubricate the guide grooves - the cartridge will slide better...... but this is not a panacea.....

-1 Evgeniy 01/27/2017 20:00 Modernization, in fact, manifested itself only in the form of increasing magazine capacity and improving ergonomics, but the power of the weapon did not change, because, as Boris Nikolaev admitted, in practice the weapon used an old 9x18 caliber cartridge, and not a new one - “reinforced” (“armor-piercing”).

0 Sergius 01/27/2017 20:03 Locking the barrel with a free movement of the bolt is a thing of the past, the circuit is designed for weak cartridges (that is why the breech had to be equipped with channels for bleeding gas, otherwise a large load would be placed on the mechanism). All modern pistols have movable barrels, even in the subcompact category

0 Oleg Karlash 01/27/2017 20:04 The same PM, only more convenient to shoot and aesthetically more beautiful. Good stuff.

0 Leva 01/27/2017 20:06 Not a very successful and not very accurate attempt at modernization - yes. There will be more attempts, hopefully more accurate. Such modernizers need to be impaled: they deliberately introduced ammunition into the range of 9x18 cartridges that has a destructive effect when used in standard PM pistols. With all the ensuing consequences - as mentioned in the video. By the way, the PMM was never put into service; it was only supplied to individual departments.

0 Georgiy 01/27/2017 20:07 PMM is a good pistol for constant carry. But when “working,” he loses to both Stechkin and Gyurza extremely badly. And for carrying, the GSh18 is still inferior, which is why it certainly did not gain distribution.

0 Igor 01/27/2017 20:11 And in the PMM-12, in emergency situations, you can use 8-round magazines from conventional PM. As our OP teacher said, trophy stores.

The difference between PMM and PM

The drawing of the modernized Makarov pistol differs from the PM standard 50 of the first year in that the magazine has been increased to 12 rounds. The sight of the new PM is not adjustable, and the shutter stop button has become much more convenient. The design of the pistol itself remained without modifications. Therefore, 70 percent of PMM parts are interchangeable with PM. The PMM has a reinforced frame and increased bolt weight. The very likely pressure in the channel near the barrel of the pistol with a new cartridge increased by as much as fifteen percent, which became a prerequisite for an increase in recoil.

Makarov pistol: sighting range of the modernized, caliber

The modernized Makarov pistol (better known as PMm, also known as the “Grach-3” project), as the name suggests, is the heir to the most popular pistol in the world - simply PM, which has been produced since 1951. The modernized version was put into service in 1994, and it is not very different from its ancestor - the pistol parts are 70% interchangeable. The incredible simplicity of the design, high reliability and extremely low cost made the PMM a worthy candidate to replace its eminent ancestor, but administrative decisions during its production and commissioning made this process unprofitable, leaving the PMM as the weapon of some law enforcement agencies and special forces.

Upgraded Makarov pistol

Since 1994, when the first pistol of the new model rolled off the assembly line, the main line of PMMs has not undergone significant changes, but several more variations of PMMs have sprung off from the main model for various conditions and situations:

    PMM-8 is a classic solution from 1994. It is compact and can be carried semi-concealed (under a jacket or raincoat), but the small volume of the magazine does not allow use in open combat. A common solution for FSO and FSB agents in plain clothes, as well as for bailiffs. At the end of the 90s, it was supplanted first by its modification PMM-12, and then by more modern concealed carry pistols.
  • PMM-12 is a new edition that has received an enlarged magazine and a noticeably thicker handle due to the denser placement of cartridges. Concealed carrying of the PMM-12 is almost impossible, but the additional four rounds in the clip give you a much better chance of survival in open combat. Mainly used by private security services, as well as other organizations in cases where the concealment of weapons is not necessary. At the moment it is the only mass-produced combat model. The cartridge is the same.
  • IZH-70-100 – also known as IZH-70-17A, a sports model with a magazine for 12 rounds. It differs from the classic PMM-12 by a modernized adjustable sight. The cartridge is still 9x18 mm.
  • Baikal 442 is an export modification of the previous model, differing in design.
  • IZH-71-100, also known as MP-71N , is a modification of the PMm, characterized by a non-standard 9x17K caliber cartridge and a 10-round magazine. This caliber allows the use of special ammunition and therefore IZH-71-100 pistols are used mainly by law enforcement officers.
  • It is worth noting that the PMm allows the use of high-impulse armor-piercing cartridges 9x18ПММ with improved ballistics, and is also backward compatible with cartridges from conventional PM.
