Submachine gun PP-19-01 “Vityaz” and “Vityaz-SN” (Russia)

Russian Vityaz SN PP 19 01 was released in 2003. The base was the PP 19 Bison 2, which was then in widespread use. It was used by special forces and employees of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs. The PP 19 01 submachine gun was invented by a designer from the Izhmash concern specifically for the Vityaz special forces detachment. Its prototype was the Kalashnikov assault rifle.

The PP 19 Vityaz submachine gun pistol impresses with its rate of fire - up to 120 v/m when firing in bursts. If the owner shoots single cartridges, then the PP 19 Vityaz assault rifle produces 40 V/m. The sight range of the submachine gun has been increased to 200 m.

The 9 mm Vityaz assault rifle has a folding shoulder rest, so the width of the weapon differs with and without the stock folded - with the Vityaz stock folded it is 90 mm, and with the stock folded down it is 65 or 67 mm.

The fact that within the city limits firing from a Kalashnikov assault rifle, albeit a shortened one, is unacceptably indisputable. However, it is the AKS74U that can often be seen among law enforcement officers. In addition to the fact that the 5.45x39 bullet retains its energy at fairly long distances and can hit a person far from the place where the weapon is used, this ammunition has several other disadvantages that are significant specifically in weapons for law enforcement officers. First of all, this is the insufficient stopping effect of the bullet, as a result of which it can be problematic to neutralize the enemy with one shot; in addition, the bullet, having passed through the enemy’s body, can hit the people standing behind him. Another disadvantage is that the bullets of the 5.45x39 cartridges are very susceptible to ricochets, which makes the use of weapons in confined spaces risky, although to eliminate this disadvantage, ammunition with a bullet with reduced ricocheting ability was developed, but this did not solve all the problems. The only option that would eliminate all these problems is a submachine gun, and gradually one can see how the Kalashnikov assault rifle is replaced by this weapon in the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The main thing is not to go too far and deprive the Ministry of Internal Affairs of these weapons altogether. Let's try to get acquainted with the main contender for the place of AKS74U with the Vityaz or PP-19-01 submachine gun.

PPP-19-01 Vityaz-SN with body kits produced. Zenit B-10 handguard, sawn for installation on the Vityaz (the original B-21 handguard was not at hand), Zenit RK-4 handle, PK-21 sight, Zenit PT-1 stock

As is clear from the name of the weapon, “Vityaz” is one of the variations of the more famous, thanks to the magazine of its unusual design, the “Bison” PP-19 submachine gun. In general, both models, in order to minimize production costs, are based on a shortened version of the Kalashnikov AKS-74U assault rifle. According to the manufacturers, the interchangeability of parts is 70%, although this number often began to slip, and the Groza assault rifle, also according to the manufacturer, is 70% unified with the Kalashnikov assault rifle. In general, it’s hard to believe exactly 70%, but there really are a lot of common components in the weapon, this is obvious even when examining the weapon externally. The receiver, the folding stock, and the weapon controls are immediately noticeable, which are very familiar from the Kalashnikov assault rifle, so the designers did a really good job on the interchangeability of weapon parts. In addition, the weapon is equipped with a trigger mechanism from the AKS74U. Naturally, it was impossible to leave everything unchanged due to the use of a pistol cartridge, which has less energy than 5.45x39, but more on that below.

Submachine gun PP-19-01 Vityaz

The appearance of the weapon is indeed very reminiscent of the AKS74U, the same arrangement of controls, familiar details of appearance, even the sighting devices repeat those on the Kalashnikov assault rifle, naturally with adaptation for the new cartridge. However, all this applies to version 10. In addition to this option, there is an improved version - version 20. This version of the weapon has some distinctive features that make it more convenient to use. First of all, this is the bolt handle located on the left side, which is more convenient in the case of a submachine gun. In addition, the fire and safety mode switch has also been moved to the left side of the weapon. Also on this version of the weapon, a picatinny-type mounting rail was placed on the receiver cover for installing additional sighting devices; naturally, during installation, the possibility of using standard rear sights and front sights is excluded. In general, such a design of a weapon does not cost much more to produce than the Vityaz submachine gun in version 10. However, you also need to understand that all of the above is not the rule. Thus, there are samples that may have another mounting strap on the fore-end, samples that have additional seats but the bolt handle is located on the right side, as well as the safety switch, and so on.

The submachine gun is powered by 9x19 cartridges and can use almost the entire range of ammunition, both foreign and domestic. Food is supplied from a detachable box magazine with a capacity of 30 rounds. The interesting thing is that the weapon comes with two magazines at once, which can be fastened together using a special fastener. This allows you to use different types of ammunition, although with 9x19 cartridges this option is probably still superfluous. It would be a different matter if we were talking about 9x21 cartridges, although with them this possibility is debatable, after all, switching from one magazine to another is not instantaneous. The weight of the weapon without cartridges is about 3 kilograms, which, in my opinion, is a bit much for a submachine gun, especially if the weapon is constantly carried. The length of the Vityaz submachine gun, regardless of its design, with the butt folded is 460 millimeters, with the stock unfolded - 698 millimeters, which is also quite a lot, the roots of the AK were most noticeable here. The length of the weapon's barrel is 230 millimeters. The effective firing range can reach 200 meters, but the greatest effectiveness is achieved when used up to 100 meters. The rate of fire from the Vityaz submachine gun is 750 rounds per minute.

Partial disassembly of PPP-19-01 Vityaz-SN

As noted above, the trigger mechanism of the submachine gun was borrowed from the AKS74U, but it is impossible to transfer the automation system to a weapon with a weaker cartridge. The Vityaz submachine gun has an automatic mechanism built according to a blowback-breech design, and the shot occurs when the bolt is closed. The rate of fire is relatively even; if delays do occur, it is only due to the fault of ammunition that is not of the highest quality. If we talk about the quality of the Vityaz submachine gun itself, then in comparison with other domestically produced models, it is made of better quality, but not ideally. However, with such an automation scheme that is used in it, it is very difficult to make a weapon bad, although domestic production is capable of a lot, but not this time. Thus, the weapon turned out to be simple and reliable, the only thing that lets it down is the cartridges, and in them, unlike weapons, the shortcomings are not only difficult to eliminate, but even to predict.

Options

"Vityaz" is produced in two versions: the basic PP-19-01 version 10 and the modified PP-19-01 version 20 "Vityaz-SN". The second option is distinguished by a safety and bolt handle placed on the left side and an additional Picatinny rail on the receiver cover.

PPK-20 [edit]

PPK-20 is a further modernization of the PP-19 Vityaz, developed and manufactured by the Kalashnikov Concern. The PPK-20 uses the AK-19 stock and is also available with an AK-9 handguard and a new silencer.

Saiga-9 [edit]

The Saiga-9 is a semi-automatic version of the PP-19 Vityaz pistol-caliber carbine with a 345 mm barrel, sold on the Russian civilian market by the Kalashnikov company.

KR-9 [edit]

In the United States, Kalashnikov USA (not associated with the Kalashnikov Concern) produces a 9.25-inch barrel clone called KP-9

and a 16-inch barrel clone called the KR-9. [5]

0 IamH 04/20/2017 11:28 My belief is that a submachine gun should now be closer in size and weight to a conventional pistol, because compact, lightweight machine guns have already appeared that are comparable in weight and size to the PP-19-01, so Its only indisputable advantage is reliability.

0 Oregon 04/20/2017 11:29 I think people who use this type of weapon on a daily basis and who often set the characteristics for designers to develop it, a priori understand the problem somewhat more than commentators. Any technical solution is always a compromise. Ultra compactness is almost always the worst accuracy and worst control of a weapon. Reliability and price are also very important. For some reason, the old and completely “non-compact” MP5 is still considered one of the best PPs.

I don’t consider the idea of creating a PP based on the AK family to be some kind of crazy idea.
It is impossible to beat the AK in terms of simplicity and reliability. Its only drawback is the accuracy/accuracy of fire. For PP, I think these disadvantages do not play a significant role due to the shorter effective range of use. It is a pity that this copy appeared inappropriately late. Now it will be very difficult for this PP to break through. I don’t see any point in comparing it with machine guns, like any other PP. If you really need a submachine gun, there is a worthy alternative - the PP-2000.

Quite compact, no matter what anyone says.
None of the advantages of PP as a class are lost... PP is not just micro ultrasound. If he still eats 7N31, then it’s absolutely fine. The base is time-tested. It looks durable and solid, which cannot be said about the same PP 2000. In general, everything is fine, but he showed up too late - at least 20 years late.
