QSZ-92 pistol with attached laser designator and 9mm cartridges

The development of this weapon, created specifically for the PLA (People's Liberation Army of China), began in 1992 and was completed in 1996. The QSZ-92 pistol (qin-shangzu 92 - model 92 pistol) combines several rather original solutions and is available in two calibers. The main variant uses the 9mm DAP-92 cartridge, which is a Chinese version of the 9mm Parabellum cartridge, with an enhanced charge equivalent in power to European and American +P+ cartridges, loaded with an armor-piercing bullet. He can also use commercial versions of this cartridge. Externally, the 9 mm pistol is distinguished by the shape of the trigger guard, which has a front protrusion for the index finger of the hand supporting the weapon, as well as stars on the side surfaces of the handle. The version chambered for the 5.8 mm cartridge is easily distinguished by its smooth trigger guard without a protrusion and by the slightly different shape of the front part of the bolt housing, which is slightly longer than that of the 9 mm version.

Chinese military experts began work on a new “weapon-cartridge” complex due to the high saturation of modern armies with personal protective equipment, especially widely used in local conflicts and constantly being improved. A cartridge with a small-caliber high-velocity bullet was selected, which has a flat flight trajectory and high penetration effect, due to which it effectively works in NIB. This is a 5.8 mm DAP-5.8 (5.8x21) cartridge with a bottle-shaped case, somewhat reminiscent of the Belgian 5.7x28 caliber cartridge, originally developed for the P-90 submachine gun, while the Chinese cartridge was created specifically for a pistol.

The longitudinal width of the handle is quite acceptable even for shooters with small hands. In addition, the 5.8 mm cartridge produces very little recoil force, despite the very low weight of the weapon. Therefore, the new Chinese pistol QSZ-92 is easy to hold and has excellent control during high-speed shooting, while demonstrating high accuracy and accuracy. The automation works according to the scheme of using recoil with a short barrel stroke. Locking is accomplished by turning the barrel. The polymer frame with handle and trigger guard has a steel longitudinal module - an insert with guides for the movement of the bolt-casing and grooves for attaching a tactical flashlight or laser target designator.

The steel module combines the trigger mechanism, safety and bolt stop. An insert with a guide rod for the return spring is attached to it. This insert has internal grooves with which the protrusions on the breech of the barrel interact when it is unlocked and locked. The trigger mechanism is hammer type, double action. The double-sided safety levers, located on both sides of the frame, also perform the function of safely decocking the hammer. The bolt stop lever is located on the left side of the frame, above the trigger guard. The double-row magazine latch is located at the base of the trigger guard. It is possible to install a silent-flameless firing device. The QSZ-92 is in service with the PLA, but is available only in some selected units.

Currently, the Chinese QSZ-92 pistol is exported under the designation CF-98-9. Apart from the inscription on the slide-casing, there is no difference between these two pistols. The owner of the CF-98-9 about his pistol: “The pistol turned out to be light and ergonomic. The Russian Viking fits my hand better, but I have a big hand. In my opinion, the CF-98's magazine is limited to 15 rounds due to the size of the average Chinese soldier's hand. The pistol is easy to disassemble. You need to remove the magazine and bolt stop, and then remove the bolt housing and barrel. The locking system is quite original in design. On the surface of the barrel, in the rear part, there are as many as eight lugs that lock the barrel by rotation. This locking turned out to be very reliable in practice. This design allows the use of very powerful +P+ cartridges and even with a maximum pressure value corresponding to +P++.

The rotation of the barrel is ensured by an additional profile protrusion (guide pin) and a connection seat, into which the mainspring rests. The wall thickness of the bolt casing when measured in the window for ejecting spent cartridges is 3.8 mm. For comparison, the Viking has 2.2 mm. An interesting feature is that the steel of the bolt casing rings like a knife blade at the slightest impact. Loading and removing cartridges from the magazine takes place without any effort or delay. The return spring is quite strong. In single action mode, the trigger pull is as heavy as the Viking. Which is caused by the original military-police purpose of this weapon. However, unlike the MP-446, the trigger stroke of the CF-98-9 is much shorter, which has a positive effect on shooting accuracy. In self-cocking mode, the trigger pull is even, and the travel is again significantly shorter than the MP-446, but longer than the Beretta M 92, CZ 75, HK USP and Sig Sauer P226.”

Let's start with the cartridge

The main pistol ammunition of the Chinese army until the early 90s of the twentieth century was 7.62x25 mm. The new small-caliber cartridge with a bottle casing, as far as one can judge, is the result of long and thoughtful work on crossing “Tetesh” ammunition and the Russian 5.45x18-mm cartridge for the PSM pistol. In addition, world experience was clearly taken into account: the most famous developments of a small-caliber cartridge for PDW (personal defense weapons) belong to the Belgians, who used 5.7x28 mm ammunition in the FNP-90 submachine gun.

However, the “5-7” pistol was introduced and put into service only in 1999–2000, when the PRC had already done everything. In addition, the Chinese initially made their DAP-92 for a “short-barreled” weapon, and the FN - specifically for a submachine gun.

The short cartridge case, oddly enough, got along well with a rather long bullet: judging by data from open sources, the ammunition produces an initial speed of 450 m/s and 420 J of power. This particular pistol cartridge is by far the most common in the army, but it is not supplied outside the PRC, and there is catastrophically little real data on it.

For commanders

However, a full-size pistol is not suitable in all cases, so another model was adopted for army command in 2011 - the QSZ-11. If you look closely at it, you can see obvious features of the Soviet PM - more precisely, its late version of the MP-448Skif, developed in the late 90s, but never put into production.

True, the QSZ-11 frame is not plastic, but light alloy, and the cartridge used is a standard military DAP-92; the single-row magazine holds eight rounds. In this case, the weapon operates on the principle of free-breech recoil. Considering the rather powerful ammunition, it is unlikely that the pistol is designed for serious shooting, but for the command staff this is not critical...

A little off topic combat pistol If it makes the moderators very angry, let it sit for at least ten days, thank you

krot

A little off topic: a combat pistol. There is a corresponding topic about it. https://guns.allzip.org/topic/81/639032.html Or you try to post it there. They said such garbage(((, it would be better if they remained silent. They also introduced themselves to the military(((

Shoot point-blank at pieces of wood without glasses. Hit a stone at close range without fear of a ricochet. It's dangerous. Or self-confidence?

Chinese pistol QSZ

Many countries have their own individual combined arms weapons, which no one else has. So why don’t the Chinese do something special for themselves... That’s exactly what the management thought when they ordered the creation of a new Chinese pistol, the QSZ-92, which, however, turned out to be very reliable, convenient and in many ways universal, unique among its analogues. China has put a lot of effort into this, but now the army and police can be proud of a pistol that has such a considerable list of advantages.

History of creation

The birth of the new Chinese pistol began in 1992 and ended in 1996. The weapon was created specifically for the PLA (People's Liberation Army of China) as part of a project to modernize the weapons arsenal. However, one of the hidden reasons was China’s desire to stand out from the crowd and use not foreign pistols in local conflicts, but its own analogues, which would be somehow different from the rest.

As a result, the creation of a new “cartridge-weapon” complex began, due to the high degree of saturation of armies around the world with individual means of self-defense. Without thinking twice, Chinese designers and engineers decided to settle on two selected calibers: 9 mm Parabellum (with improved characteristics and an increased powder charge, equal in power to world standards +P+) and 5.8 mm (a unified cartridge made in China). The nine-millimeter cartridge was called DAP-92, and the 5.8 cartridge was called DAP-5.8.

The Chinese gunsmiths took the 5.7x28 caliber as a model, which, by the way, is used in the P-90 submachine guns. However, they did not want to simply take a ready-made cartridge, but upgraded it to a new caliber - 5.8x21 mm. The cartridge is pointed at the end, which has a positive effect on its penetration abilities, unlike the Parabellum, and its cartridge case is bottle-shaped. The management set strict conditions for the development of this caliber - the bullet must pierce a Chinese helmet at a distance of 50 meters. However, the Chinese worked so hard that it turned out even better: guaranteed penetration from a distance of 100 meters. Cartridge weight – 3 grams, initial speed – 480 m/s, muzzle energy – 344 J.

Regarding the 9-mm cartridge, gunsmiths from the Middle Kingdom also tried their best: they increased the charge of the cartridge, which made it possible to improve the combat qualities of the bullet. But due to the blunt shape of the nose, this caliber was less effective compared to 5.8 mm. Therefore, the Chinese began to produce a Parabellum pistol for export to the USA for sale, and their own 5.8 caliber for their own armed forces and police.

  • Length: 217 mm
  • Barrel length: 125 mm
  • Cartridge: 9×19 Parabellum
  • Magazine: 15 rounds
  • Initial bullet speed: 390 m/s
  • Sighting range: 50 m

In the holster of soldiers: USA, Italy, Spain, France, South Africa, Peru, Algeria and under the cap of Yuri Nikulin in the film “The Diamond Arm”.

In the Soviet comedy “The Diamond Arm,” the main character talks to an operative and at the same time hides the received pistol under his cap; a Beretta model 1934 9x17 mm pistol flashes in the frame. In addition to the incident described, the Beretta appeared on movie screens about 800 times, we are talking about the civilian version of the 92FS.

The Italian armory is located in the town of Gardone Val Trompia, in the northern part of Italy, and its history goes back to 1526. The Beretta 92 pistol first appeared in 1976, sensitive to the coming changes in the market. In the 1980s, the US Army command was forced to abandon the reliable Colt M1911 45-caliber assistant due to the adoption of a single standard among NATO countries. In an open and fair fight, Beretta won the tender for the supply of pistols to the American army; production was organized in the United States with external insignia and special markings. There are cases when the client was decisively dissatisfied with the quality of the weapon, but the M9 continues to do its job today, precisely eliminating shortcomings.

The design of the pistol and its features

The automatic operation of the pistol is standard, based on the use of recoil force with a short barrel stroke. By turning the barrel, the bolt is locked. Externally, the QSZ-92 is covered mostly in plastic: handle, trigger guard, etc. The polymer parts of the weapon have a steel longitudinal module for installing a tactical flashlight and laser target designator.

This module combines the firing mechanism, bolt stop and safety, ensuring the reliability of the entire structure. The return spring rod is attached to it. The trigger mechanism is hammer type, double action. The safety box is installed on both sides of the pistol, thereby simplifying its use for both right-handers and left-handers. This flag also performs an additional function - you can safely release the trigger. On the left side of the frame there is a bolt stop lever. The magazine is double-row, the latch is located near the trigger guard. The QSZ-92 pistol can be equipped with a PBS (silent firing device).

At the moment, in addition to the usual pistol for the PLA, China also produces an exported analogue of the QSZ-92 called CF-98-9, which is no different except for the characteristic inscription on the casing.

Chief Army

The most important modern Chinese pistol, the QSZ-92, is a very interesting machine. A plastic frame with a removable (stamped from steel) insert block containing a trigger mechanism (trigger mechanism), a 5.8-mm small-caliber cartridge DAP-92 used - all this, at first glance, resembles the Belgian Five-Seven.

Here we could joke about “they made their own Steyr and Zig, and then they wanted their own 5-7 with a characteristic squint.” But this is not the case, the Type 92 is its own, original development, put into service in 1994. With a weight of only 760 grams, a total length of 188 mm and a magazine capacity of 20 rounds, the weapon looks very, very advantageous. With the trigger, the designers did not try to split hairs and instead of the fashionable striker-fired design, they left the classic double-action version.

“For external use” a version of the CF-98 weapon is produced for the good old 9x19 mm Luger (the Chinese also use it for their own police special forces) and supplies abroad, and for special aesthetes there is a pistol for 7.62x25 mm TT . Interestingly, in this version, not only the caliber of the weapon differs, but also the operating scheme of the automation: instead of a rotary barrel with a semi-free bolt, there is a rigid locking. Externally, these models are easy to distinguish - the five-pointed star stamped on the handle is found only on the police/commercial version.

General opinion of gun experts about the pistol

Many owners of exported Chinese CF-98-9 pistols note its excellent ergonomics and light weight, thanks to which it fits comfortably in the hand. Disassembling the pistol is very simple: remove the magazine, then the bolt stop, remove the bolt casing along with the barrel. For reliability, Chinese designers designed 8 lugs on the rear side of the barrel, which securely fix the barrel. Practice shows that this method is so reliable that it allows the use of cartridges with power and pressure comparable to the European standard +P++.

The quality of manufactured parts is excellent. For comparison, the thickness of the bolt casing in the window for spent cartridges is 3.8 mm, while the Russian famous Viking has 2.2 mm.
