Technical characteristics and equipment of the IZH-60 air rifle

This article begins a review of hardball rifles. It will start with the domestic manufacturer IzhMech. Today's guest on the MP-60 program.

It would probably be logical to start with a review of “Murka”, because... it is more common among hardball players, but in our club the first hardball rifle was the 60th Izh.

I was about to write this review, but the hero of the occasion was not at hand. Therefore, we will have to limit ourselves to a verbal description using archival photographs. We will also not analyze the internals - there are many specialized forums for these purposes, here we will look at it through the eyes of a hardball fighter.

So. Let's start with the technical characteristics of this miracle:

Story

The IZH-60 air rifle was created in the 80s of the last century by Soviet designers IMZ (Izhevsk). Initially, it was a sports gun for training shooting on the territory of a shooting range. In the 90s, the situation on the pneumatic market changed dramatically. Any adult citizen could buy low-power pneumatic weapons.

The IMZ designers, based on the IZH-60, also created their own rifle called the MP-60. The new pneumatics were intended for sport shooting and were sold without a license.

The low-power MP-60 rifle did not pose a serious danger to others and fired only 4.5-mm lead bullets. Compared to the IZH-60, the new Izhevsk model was made of plastic, and only the barrel remained metal. Pneumatic weapons were manually loaded with only one projectile, had low power and could be used for training and acquiring skills in handling weapons.

Currently, Russian and Zlatoust ZMZ are producing several modifications of the MP-60 (MR-60S, MP-60M). All models are almost identical in design, differing only in the strength of the shot. Analogs of IZH-60 are sold without a license and are intended for sport shooting.

Results

The MP-60/61 is unlikely to be suitable for an experienced shooter, but for recreational shooting and mastering the intricacies of working with air guns, it is an ideal option. This rifle is also good as a “simulator” for practicing the processes of modernizing pneumatics. Its low cost allows you not to worry about making possible mistakes.

You can purchase IZH-61 in the stores of the World of Hunting chain. Look for even more weapons in our catalog.

Technical characteristics of IZH-60

The main features of the IZH-60 pneumatics:

  • spring-piston;
  • single-barrel;
  • non-automatic;
  • small-caliber;
  • single-shot;
  • 84 N (spring charging force);
  • 4.5 mm (caliber);
  • 3-7.5 J (muzzle energy);
  • 45 cm rifled barrel;
  • 6 grooves on the barrel;
  • 77.5-105 cm (total length);

  • 2.1-2.7 kg (weight);
  • for lead bullets 4.5 mm;
  • 120…140…180 m/s (the speed of the bullet leaving the barrel);
  • side cocking lever;
  • there is no fuse;
  • no store;
  • sighting bar / rear sight / front sight;
  • dovetail;
  • durable plastic/metal.

Execution options

The designers have developed several modifications of the IZH-60. The first model, MP-60, went on sale in the mid-90s. Unlike IZH-60, the analogue has a plastic rather than metal body. The MP-60 weighs almost half a kilogram less than its predecessor.

In the 2000s, a low-power rifle MP-60S appeared, which was even less powerful. Anyone could buy such a model, even a teenager over 18 years old. The latest modification, the MP-60M, has even less shot force.

Variants of IZH-60 (bullet speed at the moment of departure from the barrel and muzzle energy):

  • MP-60 (170-180 m/s, up to 7.5 J);
  • MR-60S (140 m/s, 3 J);
  • MP-60M (120 m/s, below 3 J).

The low-power pneumatic MP-60 is called “Junior”, as it is intended for acquiring skills in handling weapons.

A bullet fired from a barrel may break a glass jar, but it will get stuck in a wooden board. Analogues of IZH-60 do not pose a serious danger to human health (if you do not aim at the eye or temple).

Possible tuning and upgrade

The performance characteristics of the rifle will greatly increase if you upgrade it.

To increase the piston stroke and, accordingly, the speed of the bullet, a metal insert can be placed in the piston. It is positioned so that the sear rests on the piston plate, and not on its end.

The part used is pre-bent and thoroughly processed with a file: the working area of the cylinder should not be damaged at all. The metal plate does not need to be secured - the spring presses it tightly.

There is also an option to increase the piston stroke of the MP-60 - install an additional element that extends the piston. To ensure the strength of the connection, soldering is used, and the seam is carefully ground.

Design features

IZH-60, like MP-60, is a spring-piston model. The source of energy that pushes the bullet out of the barrel is the work of a spring, a piston and compressed air. The spring-piston mechanism is located in the butt. The pneumatic cylinder is mounted at an angle of 5 degrees relative to the barrel. The spring-piston model fires 4.5 mm lead bullets. The bullet flies out of the barrel at an average speed of 150 m/s and is guaranteed to hit the target from a distance of 3-5 meters.

MP-60 / IZH-60 - single-shot model with a fixed (fixed) barrel. The rifle fires single shots, but is reloaded not by breaking the barrel, but by using the side cocking lever (a long tube). The pneumatic is cocked easily, without much effort. The cocking mechanism has a locking device that prevents accidental firing. The IZH-60 and its analogues do not have a classic fuse. The bullet is manually inserted into the chamber hole and chased by the rammer.

The shooter can independently adjust the length of the stock (using a screw under the stock) and even change the position of the trigger. The open-type sighting device consists of a front sight and a sighting bar with a rear sight.

The MP-60 receiver is made of durable plastic, only the barrel is steel. Early IZH-60 models produced at ZMZ were entirely metal, but now you can only buy them second-hand. But thanks to the plastic body, the new pneumatics have become much lighter.

The MP-60 / IZH-60 rifle is compact in size. The weapon is comfortable to hold in your hands, you can run with it and overcome obstacles. The spring-piston mechanism is not afraid of rain and snow. You can shoot a rifle in any weather conditions. The design has provisions for mounting a collimator or optical sight.

Dismantling MP 60

To disassemble the MP-60, you must first remove the stock. First, the mounting screws are unscrewed, then the rear ones that hold the forend. Next, all existing sighting devices are removed: you should start with the front sight base nut, then loosen the sight screw.

Remove the lock and lever. Pull out the spring, rod, piston. The pin is removed last and only then the sear and trigger are removed.

To assemble the MP-60, the operation is carried out in the reverse order

Assembly and disassembly

Instructions for disassembling the IZH-60 air rifle:

  • unscrew the stock screw;
  • remove the stock;
  • unscrew the fixing bolts on the body;
  • remove the plastic forend (frame);
  • remove the cocking lever (by removing the locking ring and bushing);
  • remove the spring-piston mechanism (turning slightly counterclockwise);
  • remove the rammer (by unscrewing the bolt);
  • It is better to leave the barrel attached to the coupling.

Important! The rifle is assembled in the reverse order of disassembly. It is not recommended to disassemble a weapon unless necessary. After every thousand shots, you can clean the rifle barrel. There are special cleaning products for pneumatics on sale. The barrel can be cleaned without disassembling the structure.

Possible tuning

According to the law, it is prohibited to modify weapons. The fact is that as a result of modernization, you can get a more powerful rifle, which you cannot use without a license. However, some craftsmen are remaking the MP-60, wanting to increase the penetration power of the shot. Modernized pneumatics do not always show the best results. After all, any change in the factory design is fraught with negative consequences.

MP-60 conversion options:

  • strengthening the spring (replacing the factory spring with a more powerful one);
  • trimming the barrel (to reduce the path of the bullet before leaving the barrel);
  • weighting the bullets (by spraying silicone spray).

It is not possible to significantly change the power of an air rifle. The fact is that the force of the shot depends on the volume of the pneumatic chamber connected to the barrel, as well as on the work of the piston and spring. All these parts have standard factory dimensions. When altering or altering factory-installed spare parts, there is a risk of damaging the rifle.

Important! Using the “Whale from Kruger” kit, the spring-piston model MP-60 can be converted into a PCP. After modernization, the speed of a bullet leaving the barrel increases to 250 m/s (the bullet can pierce a wooden board). The rifle converted using the “Kit Killer” kit will receive the characteristics of the MP-553K.

https://gnom256.narod.ru/obzori/izh60.html Air rifles IZH60,61 https://baikalinc.ru/ru/company/57.html are spring-piston rifles of the original layout for initial shooting training. For many years, the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant produced classic fractures PSR, PSRM, IZh22, IZh38. IZH60 is the first rifle with a fixed barrel and a side cocking lever. The rifle has an original layout (with a slight stretch you can say bullpup), and the IZH60.61 is also equipped with useful adjustments. The length of the stock, the trigger stroke, the trigger force, and the position of the trigger are adjustable. Separately, it is necessary to say about the descent. The rifle has a very good sporting 3-piece trigger with warning. The trigger force and trigger stroke are regulated within a fairly wide range by 2 adjusting screws (on older versions there were 3 and 4 adjusting screws). The rifle barrel is unified with other models of Izhevsk recreational rifles. Manufactured by cold forging. The barrel length is 45 cm, the outer diameter is 13 mm, it has 6 grooves with semicircular fields, less often trapezoidal. The type of rifling does not affect accuracy and is a consequence of the use of an appropriate mandrel, and not a reduction in the cost of production, as some believe. There is usually a choke at the end of the barrel. The cylinder of the rifle is located at an angle of 5 degrees to the barrel and is a through pipe closed at the front with a plug; the internal surface is well made, with a fairly low roughness, to put it simply, it is mirror-like. The piston is usually not poorly machined and has less clearance with the cylinder than in other rifles. The piston stroke is 57mm, the standard cuff is 25mm. The original spring has the following characteristics: wire diameter 2.6 mm, outer diameter 19.5 mm, number of turns 32-33, compressed length 80 mm, free length 210 mm. A piston weight is included as standard. At the rear, the spring is preloaded with a plug, which is secured by a transverse pin and a pin-axis of the cocking lever. A ratchet is installed in the butt plate. Until 2000, the rifle was produced with a metal receiver, the so-called “metal” https://forum.guns.ru/forummessage/3/92512.html Now the receiver is made of plastic. From the store, IZH60 usually has a speed of 120-140 m.s. depending on the copy, or more precisely on the quality of its execution. The accuracy of the rifle is usually very good and allows you to put almost a bullet into a bullet at 10 meters. Also, the advantage of this rifle is that it has a very weak, smooth and easily predictable recoil; there are practically no parasitic vibrations when firing, which are well known to owners of IZH38 and MP512. This allows, with very average shooting skills, to easily hit a ruble coin at 10 meters from your hands. The rifle is very quiet. All this makes it ideal for home target shooting, although the rifle allows you to shoot further, as a rule, the effective range for a rifle from a magazine is about 25 meters. You can read about the upgrade here https://home.tula.net/airguns/main.htm, but you shouldn’t take everything at its word, since that article many opinions have changed. You shouldn’t stuff a spring from the GC or from the Carpathian front fork into the IZH60, then you won’t have to change the connecting rod to a thicker one. There’s no need to stuff a paperclip into the groove of the cuff; you can put a rubber band there or fill it with silicone sealant, as you can see in the article about MP512. Here https://home.tula.net/airguns/dosilat.htm it is described how to finish the rammer, in principle everything is correct, but on new rifles the rammer is already with a rubber band and if it does not poison, then nothing needs to be completed, but on new rifles it needs to be sealed front cylinder plug (for example, fum tape). All the tips for sealing IZH60 unfortunately are not suitable for IZH61, the problem is that the rings will get stuck in the magazine, and if they go through, they will be caught by the magazine stopper part. You can do like me. You need to make a groove as in the link above, only one and wider, wind the threads tightly there and fill them with super glue on top, then rub them into the magazine. If everything is done carefully, it will live for a long time.

In the photo I made it with hot glue, but practice has shown that super glue is more reliable. And if you have access to a machine park, then it’s best to do this https://www.hunter.ru/airgun/articles/guns/article48.htm About replacing the spring with a stiffer one, it’s written here https://home.tula.net/ airguns/main.htm For those who are afraid to throw out the ratchet, I advise you to pull it out and bore the backplate, so that there is about a millimeter left to the pin, then you can install an uncut spring from MP512, which I consider the best option for IZH60,61. It’s also not a bad idea to increase the piston stroke https://www.airkharkov.h15.ru/master/rifles/hodizh60/hodizh60.html In my case, it increased by almost 10 m.s. Here are some drawings https://forum.guns.ru/forummessage/24/241620.htmlhttps://forum.guns.ru/forummessage/24/275154.html New description on increasing the piston stroke from docalex To improve accuracy, I advise make a muzzle, the weight is selected individually until a good balance is obtained, you can make the butt heavier by pouring shot with foam into it. Many articles recommend redoing the muzzle chamfer. Before doing this, look carefully at the factory one, although it is not beautiful, it is most often smooth, and if the rifling comes off at the same time and there are no burrs, then you don’t have to do anything, especially considering that not everyone can make a good, even chamfer at home . You can install an optical sight on the rifle. A big plus of the IZH60 is that it is not demanding on optics; almost any optics, with the exception of very left-handed and crooked ones, will work without problems. I’ll finish this review with the characteristics of the rifle after the upgrade. The perfected IZH60.61 is an excellent rifle for confident shooting up to 25 meters at targets, banks, and karkushkin attics. The power of a finished rifle is usually 7-8J. Accuracy bullet to bullet at 10 meters.

The rifle is very convenient and unpretentious to use. Therefore, I can consider it a confident leader in the class of non-sporting SPP rifles with a power of up to 7.5 J.
