Mts 20 07 technical characteristics. The MTs-20 carbine is the closest relative of the legendary Mosin rifle

Firing

This weapon is intended for hunting large game. Shooting from an MC 20-01 bullet from a distance of 30-50 meters shows excellent results. With a well-aimed shot, you can kill an elk with one bullet, but if it was not enough, then there are two more cartridges in the magazine. As for shot shooting, you can hit a hare from a distance of 50-60 meters with the third or fourth number. This weapon also shows good results in black grouse hunting, but here it is better to use a four-zero shot. Shooting from a Berdanka is characterized by accuracy and good accuracy, regardless of the type of charge (bullet, shot, buckshot) at a distance of 100-110 meters.

Shooting

  • squeeze the side latches of the magazine and separate it from the gun;
  • equip the magazine: insert two cartridges one by one, moving them until they rest against the rear wall of the magazine;
  • Turn the bolt handle handle counterclockwise until it stops. When the shutter is opened, the hammer will be cocked (the cocking indicator should protrude above the surface of the liner);
  • put the gun on safety (the safety button should be in the rearmost position);
  • pull the bolt back, insert a cartridge into the chamber;
  • move the bolt forward and turn the handle clockwise until it stops;
  • insert the loaded magazine into the corresponding window of the gun until it stops;

Before firing, move the safety button to the extreme forward position.

To fire the next shot you need to:

  • open the shutter,
  • reflect the spent cartridge case by vigorously moving the bolt back by the handle;
  • use the bolt to send the next cartridge from the magazine into the chamber;
  • close the shutter. The gun is ready for the next shot. Discharge. After finishing shooting, the gun must be unloaded, for this:
  • cock the trigger, turn the bolt handle counterclockwise, put the gun on the safety;
  • separate the store;
  • use the bolt to remove the cartridge (case) from the chamber and reflect it outside the box;
  • move the bolt to the extreme forward position, move the safety button forward;
  • with the shutter open, press the trigger and, without releasing it, close the shutter - this will cause a smooth release of the trigger;
  • unload the magazine and insert it into the gun;
  • pull the butt back until the axis of the butt comes out of the wedge grooves of the bracket and turn it until it is locked with a latch located in the forend.

User manual

Maintenance of MTs-20-01 includes the following rules:

  • before preparing the gun for use, remove grease from the outer surface, barrel and chamber;
  • Blank shots are not allowed in the absence of a cartridge, they lead to rapid wear of the parts of the trigger mechanism;
  • the weapon is stored only unloaded with the trigger pulled to avoid spring subsidence;
  • Snow, sand, dirt and other substances are not allowed to get into the trunk;
  • cartridges that fit tightly into the chamber are not used;
  • before use, check the reliability of the tightening screws;
  • do not point the gun at a person or domestic animal;
  • in case of a misfire, you should wait at least 5 seconds to avoid a prolonged shot, only after that the gun is checked.

Weapons are inspected and cleaned after shooting and at least once every three months. The barrel channel is cleaned from powder deposits with a bristle brush with an alkaline solution. To remove lead deposits, use a brush made of thin steel or brass wire, and additionally use gun lubricant.

Disassembling and assembling the gun

Before disassembling the gun, make sure it is unloaded. To do this, check the presence of a cartridge in the chamber and magazine. After this, proceed to the following actions:

  • carry out partial disassembly of the gun - separate the magazine by pressing the retaining latches, and remove the bolt, moving it back and pressing the trigger all the way;
  • holding the bolt by the cylindrical part, turn the liner clockwise until it extends along with the cylinder from the bolt frame;
  • separate the trigger and firing pin from the liner, simultaneously removing the spring with the lock.

The weapon is assembled in the reverse order. If necessary, the components of the weapon are cleaned and lubricated. The gun should be loaded only before further shooting.

TOZ-106 cartridges

As mentioned above, the TOZ-106 barrel is 20 gauge, with a chamber length of 70 mm. The TOZ-106 can be loaded with any cartridges corresponding to this caliber.

For self-defense purposes, it is best to use small buckshot or shotgun cartridges loaded with 0000 or 000 shot. If you have to defend yourself using TOZ-106, when you shoot at the legs with such cartridges, it will be quite easy to hit the attacker, such a shot will definitely stop him, this will not cause him significant harm. The bullet cartridge is not very suitable for these purposes. You can also use special cartridges loaded with rubber bullets or rubber buckshot for self-defense.

For hunting purposes, cartridges need to be selected in accordance with the game you are going to hunt. We must not forget that the barrel of the TOZ-106 is quite short and has a muzzle cylinder, so you should not use the TOZ-106 for long-range shots.

What to look for?

To get the maximum effect from using the MTs-20-01 during hunting, you need to pay attention to some nuances when purchasing. There are several most important parameters that are checked first:

  • USM;
  • reliability of the fuse;
  • metal sediment in the stock;
  • shutter adjustment;
  • quality of the weapon barrel.

If you are unlucky and end up purchasing a weapon with a defect, then do not worry. Most of them can be eliminated on your own in a few minutes. Also, do not forget that the store provides a guarantee on the weapon, so it is obliged to replace the low-quality product with a new one. The most common defects when purchasing include poor magazine retention and heavy shutter travel. The fix is quite simple. You just need to partially disassemble the weapon and lubricate all the mechanisms.

When choosing a shotgun brand MTs-20-01, be sure to pay attention to the following factors

  1. The choke constriction should have a perfectly oval shape.
  2. The thickness of the barrel walls at the muzzle should be the same.

As a rule, these are the only serious defects that you can stumble upon when purchasing an MTs-20-01. After this, you can start looking for minor deviations. It is worth checking the soldering of the front sight. It must be perfectly level, otherwise the hunter will only be able to hit a tree during the hunt.

Finally, it’s worth saying a few words about the bolt - an important component of any weapon

Pay close attention to how easily the chamber slides into the cartridge. After the shot, the cartridge case should fly out quite sharply, and the movement of the shutter by hand should be smooth

Recommendations for weapon maintenance

Before shooting, it is necessary to wipe the barrel of the gun dry, because the remaining oil in it during a shot under the influence of pressure and high temperature forms carbon deposits, which are very difficult to remove. In addition, this also affects power, as the friction force increases. The wooden parts of the gun should be periodically wiped with oil or drying oil - this helps maintain the water-repellent properties of the material. Also, owners of MTs 20-01 need to understand that this weapon is significantly different from “fractures”; it is very difficult to remove foreign objects from it that could get into the barrel. Therefore, it is better to purchase or sew a special leather cover for the entire base of the front sight. This minor addition to the gun’s equipment will allow you to move freely through the forest and wade through thickets. Even an accidental shot will not be able to damage the barrel, because the charge will simply tear the case.

Tuning TOZ-106

Owners of TOZ-106, after purchasing a gun, often do tuning of TOZ-106, basically these changes and modifications come down to several points:

  • Refinement and adjustment of the TOZ-106 magazine, so that the magazine is clearly inserted into the gun and does not fall out. Sometimes the standard TOZ-106 magazine is replaced with a 3, 4, 5 local magazine.
  • Modification of the TOZ-106 shutter so that it moves smoothly and without jamming, most often this is achieved by filing the mating parts of the shutter
  • Installing an optical or callimator sight on the TOZ-106; the need to install a sight is quite controversial, but many TOZ-106 owners do this for their own reasons
  • Replacing or tuning the TOZ-106 stock (stock) in order to give the weapon a full-size look

Whether all these modifications are necessary or not is up to the owner of this gun to decide.

general characteristics

Single-barreled three-shot (2+1) magazine shotgun of 20 caliber for hunting cartridges with a 70 mm long sleeve with a folding metal butt of the AKS-47 type, which, in the folded position, places the weapon on an automatic safety. According to the passport, it is intended for amateur hunting of birds and small animals at short distances (not exceeding 25 m for a shotgun shot, and even further with a bullet) and protection of domestic animals, crops, and economic objects in all macroclimatic areas, except for areas with a humid tropical climate . The base model is MTs-20. Originally designed as a “farmer's weapon” for security and defense. Rational hunting with TOZ-106

is doubtful, since the short barrel produces a wide spread of shot. The disadvantage of the model is the design of the magazine: a magazine filled with cartridges is very difficult to separate from the weapon without tools; The dimensions of the magazine do not correspond to the length of the cartridge, which leads to the cartridge sticking into the “stump” of the barrel, that is, to a delay in firing.

The barrel is 250 mm long, its connection to the box is carried out by a press fit and is fixed with a pin. The bore and chamber are chrome plated. For targeted shooting there is a rear sight and a front sight.

The magazine is box-shaped for 2 (4) cartridges, detachable, and has two latches located on the sides.

The stock is metal, folding, with a rubber butt plate, mounted on an axis located in the bracket. The stock is secured in the transport position (folded position) by a latch located in the fore-end, and in the shooting position by an axis in the wedge grooves of the bracket.

The gun has the following marks: gun model - TOZ-106

, the mark of the State Testing Station, indicating that it was tested there - GIS (the letters are enclosed in a parallelogram); a set of numbers, which is deciphered as follows: the last two digits indicate the year of manufacture of the gun and its testing, the remaining digits indicate the serial number of the gun; the mark 20x70 means that the gun is 20 gauge with a chamber length of 70 mm; the number 15.7 means the nominal bore diameter, in mm; the 72 MPa mark means the permissible pressure that cartridges can develop when firing from a gun; a mark in the form of the letter P in a circle indicates that the gun has been tested with test cartridges; the letter K in a circle means that the gun has been tested for accuracy and accuracy; and a sign combining the letters T and K in a circle indicates that the gun has been accepted by technical control.

Shotgun TOZ-106

, upon agreement with the customer, can be equipped with a case, shoulder and waist belts, a pouch for an additional magazine, a cartridge belt, a case made according to the factory drawings, as well as a set of various accessories, the list of which the factory does not provide.

Finishing the gun

Work on fine-tuning the ergonomics and mechanics of a gun is usually carried out in two main areas: polishing all surfaces of the receiver and bolt, as well as improving the ergonomic properties of the reloading and weapon control elements. The second point most often comes down to optimizing the pitch, the thickness of the ridge at the stock, modifying its neck, installing a rubber butt pad, and also modifying the bolt handle. But on the first point it is necessary to dwell in more detail. The tight operation of the bolt mechanisms, especially when raising the handle to the upper position, is the result of poor-quality processing of weapon parts, nothing more. Thus, if desired, you can be guaranteed to achieve smooth and easy operation of the unit, make it so that when shooting you can control the shutter with two fingers, and the sound of its operation itself will become “oily,” pleasant and clear, radically different from the previous grinding noise.

Shotgun selection

When buying a gun in a store, you should take into account the following criteria: quality of the barrel (the most important parameter), fit of the bolt, functionality of the safety and trigger, as well as the settlement of metal parts in the stock. Various kinds of troubles, such as heavy movement of the bolt part or poor fixation of the magazine, can be neglected. After all, you won’t be able to avoid work on fine-tuning your weapon anyway.

When inspecting the barrel, be sure to pay attention to the fact that there is no difference in the thickness of the muzzle cut and the oval choke constriction. MTs 20-01 barrels are rarely found with other defects, which, naturally, does not eliminate the need for a full inspection procedure

Pay attention to the front sight - sometimes it is soldered crookedly. When inspecting the bolt, check the functioning of the locking mechanism, as well as the trigger. If all components work normally, i.e. the cartridge case is confidently sent into the chamber, the bolt fires clearly (heavy movement is allowed), the trigger functions without failures, then you can think about purchasing this copy.

What to look for when choosing MC 20

Choosing a weapon is considered a responsible procedure that should not be rushed. Before making a purchase, the carabiner must be carefully inspected and checked how well its mechanisms function

In this case, special attention should be paid to the following nuances:

Barrel geometry. The barrel channel is checked for straightness by inspection from both sides. At the same time, its walls must have the same thickness;

Visual inspection of the stem canal. Barrel without defects in Fig. 1

  • Front sight verticality. If it is soldered with a slope or deviation from the aiming axis, you can forget about accurate shooting;
  • The performance of the trigger mechanism, the bolt, the reliability of fastening in the magazine socket, the fixation of the fuse.

If the inspection satisfies you, you can think about purchasing one of the most popular hunting rifles, for example, the MC 2120.

Review of the TOZ-106 shotgun (MC 20-04)

Since the main purpose of this model should be considered use in professional hunting, such quality as the ability to quickly disassemble is important: ease of disassembly and operation guarantees maximum convenience in field conditions when standard sets of tools are not available. The ergonomics of all structural parts ensure ease of use of the carbine, smooth movement of the trigger and the absence of difficulties when pressing it guarantees accurate shooting

A review of the TOZ-106 gun through the eyes of the owner is given in this video:

Advantages and disadvantages

Modern and adapted to field conditions, the carbine model TOZ-106 (MC 20-04) has proven itself both for its intended purpose (professional hunting) and for entertainment - it can be used for target practice, accuracy training, and participation in sports competitions. A wide range of use is one of the main advantages in comparison with other models with similar characteristics. After all, the carbine in question is as convenient as possible to use both in the field and at home. The thoughtful shape, the ergonomics of every design detail - all this made the carbine in question especially attractive to most buyers.

Also, the advantages of the model include the following qualities:

The presence of a rear sight and front sight allows you to increase the accuracy of the shooting, the convenient stock of the butt fits as comfortably as possible on the shoulder and, with relatively low recoil, ensures the best possible hit to the target. The presence of an aiming rib with the possibility of its ventilation adds accuracy to the shots taken, and the elongated shape of the barrel contributes well to accurate shooting. The most convenient form of the bolt (longitudinal-sliding) ensures ease of cocking and firing; the well-functioning cocking mechanism guarantees good shooting performance.

The presence of a latch that firmly fixes the carbine barrel when folded ensures the reliability of the resulting design, and the rubber butt pad adds convenience to its operation. The durability of the carbine is ensured by the use of chrome in many structural parts, which facilitates the process of caring for it and prevents the onset of rust.

This is especially important in cases where the carbine in question is used in field conditions, with high humidity and the likelihood of getting into water

In comparison with similar models from third-party manufacturers, the TOZ-106 (MTs 20-04) shotgun stands out due to the combination of attractive technical characteristics and relatively affordable cost

This is what first attracts the attention of buyers. And reviews from owners who have already started using this model allow us to get a more detailed idea of it

TOZ-106 with different stocks

Purpose

This model can be used for entertainment (accuracy training, participation in sports shooting competitions) and for participation in hunting small and medium-sized animals, as well as for self-defense and protection of one’s property.

Varieties

Varieties of this carbine are offered for sale, equipped with an aiming bar and the buttstock of which is made of different types of wood. Their technical characteristics remain at an initially high level and ensure both a high level of demand for the model and positive feedback from owners. There are also samples with a plastic stock.

Stock TOZ-106

The TOZ-106 stock is made folding from the factory. In the rear section of the receiver there is a hinge on which the TOZ-106 stock rotates. This allows the TOZ-106 butt to fold under the barrel.

The TOZ-106 stock is made entirely of stainless steel and assembled using a frame type. The TOZ-106 cannot be fired except with the stock unfolded, since the shot is blocked when the stock is retracted or removed.

The built-in safety prevents a shot from being fired if the trigger is accidentally touched. The fuse has a standard slider type located behind the bolt in the tail of the barrel box. On the TOZ-106 the stock has a safety latch on the right side.

Due to its compactness, the TOZ-106 shotgun is always at hand; in a car you can put it under the seat or put it behind it. Some carry the TOZ-106 on their hip, in a holster, like a pistol. Many hunters or tourists carry it in a backpack, because thanks to the folding stock, the TOZ-106 easily fits in it.

Many hunters complain that they find it quite unusual to shoot with a folding stock and a bolt action. But the skill of shooting with TOZ-106 quickly develops if you practice more often. It’s a good idea to practice the skill of quickly deploying a gun; this can be very useful if you have to use the TOZ-106 for self-defense.

Among TOZ-106 owners there are those who, by installing a different type of stock, convert it into a full-size version. For this purpose, a stock from the MTs-20-01 is often used, while the stock is shortened slightly, resulting in a rather original version of the weapon.

Design

The MTs 20-01 shotgun is a single-barreled, magazine-fed, bolt-action shotgun. Thanks to the design used, it is more reminiscent of a rifled carbine, both externally and ergonomically. It was decided to completely abandon the plastic stock - now it is made of wood, usually birch. In addition, the stock no longer serves as a supporting body - the shotgun received a steel receiver. The barrel in the stock is fixed with a dowel, which prevents parts from moving during shots.

The shutter device has also been improved - now it can be completely disassembled without using any tools. The bolt locks the barrel by turning, using 2 lugs. Sights MTs 20-01 – front sight and rear sight of “rifle” type.

An extended 4-round magazine can be purchased as an “optional accessory”. Since 1 more cartridge can be directly in the chamber, the shotgun can be considered a 3- or 5-shot shotgun.

The basic model is considered to be chambered for “commercial” 20 caliber cartridges (15-16 mm). Options for “fur” 28 caliber (13-14 mm) and “teenage” 32 (12-13 mm) are also available. Initially, the shotgun was designed only for the use of cartridges with a paper or plastic sleeve. Later, the receiver was modified so that the cartridge with a metal sleeve did not stick into the chamber or the protrusion of the bolt cylinder.

Masterpiece of the Tula arms factory

As soon as the hunters of our country did not call this hunting gun! They affectionately called the legendary fishery, developed in the middle of the last century under the leadership of Yu. I. Berezin, simply “twenty”, and “emtseshka”, and “berdanka”. With this gun, by the way, which immediately became scarce and popular, domestic fishermen caught any living creature living in our country, from squirrels to moose. Versatility and lightness, the attractiveness of the palette of small calibers, the specific design of the MTs 20-01 - all these factors became decisive when choosing this gun for several generations of Soviet hunters.

Independent finishing

The fine-tuning of a hunting rifle is carried out in two stages:

  1. The receiver and bolt surface are ground and then coated with gun oil.
  2. Processing of parts responsible for recharging and control.

The finishing process involves carefully sanding the weapon and carefully checking the fit of the parts. It is much more difficult to fine-tune the liner, since ordinary sandpaper will not help if it does not fit into the grooves in the receiver. This requires the ability to work accurately with a file. It is necessary to make the entrance chamfers and also grind the valves.

Disassembly and assembly

To partially disassemble the gun for the purpose of cleaning and lubrication, it is necessary to check that there is no cartridge in the chamber and magazine, separate the magazine, open the bolt, pull it back and, pressing the trigger all the way, remove the bolt from the box.

In case of emergency, complete disassembly of the shutter is carried out in the following sequence:

  • take the bolt by the cylindrical part with your left hand so that the insert is on the right. With your right hand, turn the liner clockwise until the liner with the trigger and firing pin and the cylinder with the ejector move out of the bolt frame;
  • separate the trigger and striker, for this purpose: take the insert with the trigger and striker in your right hand so that your thumb rests on the back of the trigger and the striker is directed to the left;
  • take the bolt frame with your left hand so that the lugs are directed to the right;
  • insert the firing pin into the channel of the bolt body until it stops, having previously installed the protrusions on the mainspring lock parallel to the lugs of the bolt body;
  • compress the mainspring, turn the insert with the cigarette butt and the firing pin relative to the bolt frame by 90 0 and remove the spring with the lock from the firing pin;
  • push the hammer with the hammer into the back of the liner and unscrew the hammer from the hammer, separate the hammer and hammer from the liner.

The gun is assembled in the reverse order. To assemble the bolt, insert the trigger into the groove of the liner and move it all the way to the rear wall, screw in the firing pin until the rear end of the firing pin and the trigger are flush and the marks match, install the mainspring

When locking the mainspring with a lock, care must be taken, since during assembly the lock under the action of the mainspring can jump off the firing pin and cause injury. Insert the cylinder with the ejector and the insert with the trigger and firing pin into the corresponding sockets of the bolt frame, preventing the movement of the insert by resting on any hard object; pressing the cylinder with your hand, compress the mainspring until the bolt liner touches the bolt frame and turn the bolt frame by the handle until the trigger nose coincides with the hole at the rear end of the bolt

Then you need to make sure that the outer grooves for the reflector and the shutter stop on the cylinder and on the shutter body coincide. Insert the shutter into the box. Insert the magazine into the gun as far as it will go. After assembly, check the interaction of the gun mechanisms without using cartridges.

Complete disassembly and reassembly of the gun should be carried out in case of emergency and only in a weapons workshop.

Disassembly

Disassembling the MTs 20 carbine, which every self-respecting small arms enthusiast does after every shooting, is not particularly difficult. The procedure consists of the following sequential steps:

  • disconnecting the magazine and inspecting the chamber for the absence of ammunition;
  • separating the bolt from the box after it is retracted to the rear position and the trigger is pressed all the way;
  • disassembling the bolt by removing the firing pin, the ejector cylinder and the insert with the trigger from the frame by turning the insert clockwise;
  • removing the firing pin and trigger from the liner;
  • separating the stock from the barrel after unscrewing the rear and front fastening screws;
  • Removing and disassembling the trigger mechanism.

Carbine MTs 20-01 disassembled before maintenance

Problems with early models

The MTs 20-01 shotgun is a modernized version of the MTs 20-20. The model that we now see on the shelves of gun stores was released in 1979, replacing the MC 20-20 produced since the 60s. In addition to defects in the bolt mechanism, the most significant drawback of the first copies is the plastic stock. It was made in one piece with a plastic receiver. In fact, for its time, this design solution was revolutionary, but unsuitable for the real conditions of the Soviet Union - after all, on its territory there is a significant temperature difference throughout the year. As a result, the bolt mechanism either dangled in the receiver, or vice versa, its movement was difficult. As a result, the plastic often cracked, and in this case the gun cannot be repaired. In addition, the fuse also caused significant criticism. However, all the shortcomings of this weapon were eliminated, and to this day the MC 20-01 is in great demand among hunters.

In the modernized version, the receiver is made of metal and is rigidly connected to the barrel. Two combat symmetrical bolt stops, a bolt insert, and a cocking indicator appeared. The design of the stop and reflector has been changed. It is now possible to disassemble and assemble the shutter without the use of tools. The stock is only wooden, has a pistol neck, is made of beech or birch, and is fastened with a dowel screw. The barrel is chrome plated. The gun has a pair of hunting-type swivels on screws. It is equipped with double magazines that differ in their original design and method of fixation.

Design Features

Design and diagram of the trigger mechanism

The MTs-20-01 shotgun has a simple design designed for ease of use and maintenance. The model takes into account all the shortcomings of the previous version. In addition to the first models, there were modifications with various additions. For example, the MTs-20-08 modification had a shortened barrel and a pistol stock without a stock.

Fuse

The safety reduces the likelihood of accidental discharges by locking the trigger. The mechanism is not automatic; to install it, when the trigger is cocked, the safety button is moved to the rearmost position.

Sighting mechanism

Aiming is ensured by the front sight and the front sight. The first is located in the slot of the receiver. The front sight is soldered to the muzzle of the barrel and does not have a target, which makes it difficult to aim at taking off targets. There are modifications and individual copies with optical sights.

Butt

The standard stock is made of birch or beech; there are also examples made of walnut. For convenience, the butt plate is made of plastic. The stock has a pistol-shaped neck and a tap to the right.

Trunk

The barrel is connected to the frame with a press fit and bolt-on design. In the basic version of the vertical, the muzzle narrowing is semi-choke. The bore is chrome plated.

Gate

The bolt mechanism MTs-20-01 is longitudinally sliding and rotary. In the front part there are two lugs for locking the barrel bore. Reloading is done manually by moving the bolt to the rearmost position and then to the forward position. There is a pointer protruding above the surface of the bolt cover when the firing pin is cocked.

Trigger mechanism

The firing mechanism is located in the bolt of the gun. The trigger is mounted in a housing connected to the box. The hammer is cocked by unlocking the barrel. The firing pin is spring-loaded, the trigger mechanism has its own base. Stainless steel is used to make parts of the trigger mechanism.

Specifications

The improved weapon model MTs 20-01 is produced in various calibers. There are three types of such calibers - 32, 28, 20.

The structural assembly of this weapon also does not have any unique parts:

  1. The receiver is made of steel.
  2. The bolt lugs of this weapon model are located symmetrically.
  3. Has a cocking indicator and a bolt insert.

A distinctive feature of the MTs 20-01 model compared to the usual twenty is that it is possible to disassemble the weapon model without the use of auxiliary means.

The barrel must be chrome plated. The tree used to make the handle is most often Karelian birch. European beech is used much less frequently.

MC 20-01 – characteristics:

  • The total weight of the model is 2.8 kg;
  • The total length of the weapon is 1150 mm;
  • The length of the weapon barrel is 600 mm;
  • The length of the aiming line is 610 mm;
  • Starting force less than 2 kg.

Those who have acquired such a weapon praise it for the fact that it is conveniently weighted, quite light, which is very important during long hunts, and also has good stopping power not only with shot, but also with a regular bullet.

Price and analogues

Today, you can purchase this weapon in a consignment store or secondhand. The price depends on the condition of the unit, but it rarely exceeds ten thousand rubles. Judging by the reviews of the MTs-20-01, the most important competitor of this weapon is the well-known TOZ-87, the price of which is approximately identical.

Also an analogue can be the smooth-bore carbine "Muflon-410", manufactured by Molot Arms. Its prototype was the Mosin sniper rifle of the 1938 model, which speaks of the quality and reliability of this weapon. The design feature is that it uses 410 caliber, which was specially made for the Paradox bullet.

In conclusion, it is worth noting that the MTs-20-01 is a budget version of a smooth-bore hunting weapon, which is highly reliable and can be used in various conditions. Most of the shortcomings can be corrected independently, and the simplicity of the device allows all repair and lubrication work to be carried out with ease. If you purchased a new model at a hunting store and it turned out to be defective, then replace it with a better version. Although, it is worth noting that such defective models have become much less common than before.

Finalization of the store

Standard Berdanka magazines often fall out during shooting. This is due to poor fit of the locking protrusions with the contact surfaces of the frame. Fixing this problem requires only ten minutes of work with a triangular file. It is necessary to grind down the side protrusions of the magazine a little. Even when equipped, the clip should snap easily into the socket. Play in an empty, fastened magazine is not considered a defect. In addition, the bends and the top surface of the feeder should be sanded, which will eliminate another rough surface. As a result, magazine equipment and cartridge supply will significantly improve.

This is where the standard operations for fine-tuning the MC 20-01 end; all further research remains on the conscience of the owner. For the pessimistic reader regarding the quality of this gun, it can be noted that impeccably assembled MTs 20-01 are now becoming more and more common; you just need to be more careful when purchasing your copy.

Refinement of the store

the MTs-20-01 magazine falling out while hunting

, believes that the factory modernization of the magazine is insufficient, and consists only of increasing the angle of deflection (“camber”) of its side latches. The real reason, according to the hunter, is as follows.

The difference between the planes of the window under the magazine in the receiver and the internal surfaces of the window in the stock. This increases the gap between the walls of the magazine and the stock, which in most attempts to install the magazine leads to it being skewed in the window and sticking into the protruding edge of the receiver window. In this case, the magazine only has one latch. A slight side pressure on the installed magazine from the side of the triggered latch is enough - and the magazine falls out without your noticing. The same thing happens when reloading a gun. So, the hunter believes that the main (and, in fact, the only) reason for the magazine falling out is the failure of one of the latches (and sometimes both - the magazine is held in place due to the friction of the strongly spaced latching blades) due to its skew in the window and sticking into the barrel box.

Description and features of the gun MTs 20-01

The proven hunting classics have remained relevant for almost 50 years, and this despite the fact that the market of modern weapons is constantly replenished with new and interesting models (Figure 1).

The MC 20 01 hunting rifle has three main qualities: a simple and convenient design, versatility in use, and a low price compared to other models.

The MTs 20 01 is perhaps the most accurate smoothbore gun in the history of domestic weapons - a short flash suppressor, a shortened barrel and a folding butt allow it to be used not only for fishing, but also as an effective and reliable means of self-defense. For this reason, even outdated versions that have been discontinued do not leave their leading positions in sales.

In the basic configuration, the technical description of the MC 20 01 is quite simple:

  1. This is a smoothbore hunting carbine equipped with a box magazine and bolt action typical of sniper rifles.
  2. One of the features is the constant narrowing of the barrel “poluchok”, as for sighting devices - these are standard rifle rear sights and front sights.
  3. The main model is presented in 20 gauge; modifications in 28 and 32 sizes are quite rare.

Where it is produced - MTs 20 01 is produced at the Tula Arms Plant. The first version was produced from the 60s until 1971 - after a long break, it was replaced by an improved version intended for hunting. The modernized weapon went on sale in 1979 - it is still produced and sold today, and is widely used for hunting and self-defense.

Advantages and disadvantages

If we talk about the pros and cons of the gun, then the weight and design of the MTs 20 01 can rather be attributed to its weaknesses than to its strengths (Figure 2).

Among them also:

  1. Not a particularly reliable fuse - there is a risk of failure when the butt hits the ground.
  2. The magazine is fastened with two latches - there is a high probability of misalignment during installation and locking on one side, which is why it often falls out when fired.
  3. The blunt-ended cartridges used may rest against the breech, preventing loading.
  4. Poor processing of the bolt surfaces, the need for a sharp reload to remove the cartridge case, which sharpens in the receiver as a result of the smooth retraction of the bolt.
  5. The impossibility of firing with a doublet, which is often practiced by hunters.
  6. Mounted rifle sights make it difficult to track fast and chaotically moving game.
  7. Very harsh recoil, which leads to cracks in the lightweight stock, which ineffectively absorbs the energy of the shot.

Despite these dubious features of MTs 20 01, the characteristics of the product are not so bad; it has its strengths:

  1. The sample is designed for firing bullet cartridges, equipped with a rifle rear sight and front sight.
  2. Again, the rifle design of the bolt with two side protrusions guarantees reliable locking of the barrel, which provokes some owners to equip cartridges with a reinforced charge, with which you should be extremely careful.
  3. Due to the box magazine, the specimen has an increased rate of fire compared to double-barreled horizontal and vertical guns.

Figure 2. The design of the gun cannot be called absolutely perfect

In addition to good shooting qualities, the product is visually attractive - elegant and laconic, due to the bolt action, it looks like a sniper rifle.

Purpose and varieties

The most widespread in the hunting environment was a replica of the MTs 20 01 shotgun, the length of which varied on different models. It was produced from 1979 to 2006 and produced about 80% of the game during the Soviet period.

The weapon was intended for hunting small ungulates and predators; it was also allowed to be used for self-defense.

Some versions differed in caliber; for MTs 20-02 and MTs 20-03 there were 28 and 32 sizes of ammunition, respectively.

Varieties of 20 gauge MTs 01 include:

  1. Basic example with a semi-pistol beech stock.
  2. MTs 24-04 with a 295mm shortened barrel and a folding metal stock.
  3. Another sawn-off shotgun MTs 20-08 - 550 mm barrel, pistol grip instead of a butt.
  4. Another short-barreled MTs 20-08 with a full stock, like the original.

Modifications

A five- or three-shot repeating shotgun, successfully competing with double-barreled shotguns popular among fishermen, is available in several versions, which have a number of differences from the main model:

Replicas 20-02 and 20-03 were released as a pilot batch and did not go into production due to low demand. Today they can be considered a rarity. The MTs 20-08 repeating carbine is mainly used by security forces or purchased for self-defense purposes.

MC 20-04 is universal. It is compact for transportation, and the presence of a folding stock allows for fairly accurate shooting.

Let's sum it up

TOZ-106 is suitable for those who set themselves the goals of protecting territories and self-defense. The gun is not suitable for serious hunting, but can be useful for hunting birds and small animals, provided you use the appropriate ammunition.

The TOZ-106 shotgun is in demand for the reason that it is the most compact and convenient shotgun in this category. Do not forget that the TOZ-106 can be purchased even without five years of experience in using weapons, since it is a smoothbore gun.

The model was discontinued in 2011, for this reason it is no longer available on the primary market.

Purchasing TOZ-106 on the secondary market is advantageous in that there is no need to carry out mechanical finishing work, which most likely has already been done by the first owner.

The price of a used TOZ-106 shotgun in good condition ranges from 7 to 9 thousand rubles.
