Cool knives are products for different purposes, but with common features: the sharpness of the blades, reliability and durability, ease of use, beauty and an already established reputation as high-quality tools. Similar examples can be found among hunting, military, universal, and kitchen tools.
There are knives that are flattering to own due to their high value and unique design, true works of art. But there are products that are almost ideal for use at an affordable price.
Which ones have a good blade?
A good blade on a knife is also a multi-valued concept, depending on the purpose of the weapon:
- Among the folding hunting ones, it is worth mentioning Buck 110BRS . It is very reliable, the blade is made of hard steel, so it has a lifetime warranty from the manufacturer. Suitable for cutting up carcasses and household needs that arise during a hike.
- Finnish Puukko and Norwegian Eggen . Also hunting knives, but monolithic. The blade of each product is its main advantage. The first is resistant to shock and low temperatures, has a universal shape and a length of 12-16 cm. Eggen’s blade is longer, has a traditional configuration, and high quality steel.
- Spyderco Bill Moran . This is an American product with a blade length that does not reach 10 cm. But it is made of durable Japanese steel, and it is also lightweight. The shape of the blade is traditional, the handle is slightly longer in size.
- Ka-Bar . This is a combat knife that can easily be transformed into a traveling knife. The blade is so strong that the weapon can not only defend itself, but also cut branches, metal, and dig the ground. Its shape is classic.

Russian representatives
After the collapse of the USSR, in fact, the knife industry had not yet stood firmly on its feet in another country - Russia. But there are several enterprises that produce pretty good products.
There is a lot of debate around them whether they are worth buying or not. Or still buy a foreign analogue. It's difficult to answer this question. But today quite a lot of “foreigners” have already been described; let’s take a look at our market and see what it can please us with.
Knife "Polar-2"
Zlatoust craftsmen at the AIR company offer a pretty good knife, made based on the north. It is distinguished by its large size and incredible blade reliability.
The thickness of the butt is 4.5 mm. says a lot. But it cuts food perfectly thanks to its special sharpening, the bevels are concave in the shape of a lens. Large handle, perfect for winter hunting. The blade is 12.6 cm long, total length is 23.7 cm.
The manufacturer can make a knife specifically to your requirements.
Knife "Polar-2".
Knife "Leader"
The blade is from the Vorsma company, created on the basis of scout knives from the Second World War. It has two names: “Leader” or “Combat”, no explanation has been found for this. Most likely, the second serves as a common origin.
Damascus steel makes itself felt, the hardness of the blade is 62 HRC, a very good indicator. The butt is 2.4 mm thick. it copes well with any product, but you must not forget about the rules for caring for steel.
Knife "Leader".
Knife "Corsair"
A fairly young company on the Russian market, Kizlyar Supreme, is gradually winning the hearts of Russian knife lovers. The Corsair blade has a predatory and aggressive appearance; it is made from AUS-8 steel.
The handle lining is made of natural walnut, which gives the knife a beautiful and pleasant appearance. The weight of the knife is quite small, only 124 grams, but this was achieved thanks to the small thickness of the butt of 2.4 mm. The blade length of 11 cm is sufficient to perform many tasks. For domestic, tourist and even hunting purposes.
Knife "Corsair".
Knife "007"
They say that the process of manufacturing and forging these knives is controlled by the blacksmith-gunsmith Igor Yurievich from start to finish. He is directly involved in hardening the steel and also forging each blade.
Therefore, the “007” knife model has excellent qualities for skinning and cutting carcasses. Repeated tests were carried out to compare the knife from I.Yu. Dumplings and skinners. The “007” knife performed better in this case.
The cut is straight, deep and precise. The length of the blade is 11.8 cm, the spine is from 4 to 6 mm, the total length is 26.3 cm. The blade is made of damask steel, but what its composition is is the professional secret of the master. The blade sharpening angle is 20 degrees, and the hardness reaches 63 HRC.
Knife "007".
Knife “Tabargan 100 NS”
For a change, it's worth considering a modern folding unit. The product of the knife master Mr. Shirogorov has long been recognized as one of the best in Russia. The knife is sold all over the world, everyone is delighted with this product.
But Chinese counterfeits are quite common - be careful.
The blade is 10 cm long, the spine thickness is 4 mm, the total length is 23.1 cm. The handle consists of titanium plates, the total weight is 148 grams. Fits perfectly in the hand, the handle is anatomical. If they fake it, it means there is something to fake! Such attention to the blade only gives it additional advertising.
Knife "Tabargan 100 NS".
Here are 5 Russian blades for your consideration. We hope that the people's choice will coincide with your personal one. I am glad that Russia can also produce blades that are not inferior to their foreign counterparts. It’s a pity that there are few, let’s hope and believe that every year this product market will only flourish.

The highest grade utility knife is any of the following:
Name | Description | Photo |
Spyderco Endura | This knife is folding, which means you can carry it with you, use it on a hike, while hunting, and even in the kitchen. The blade is made of VG⎼10 steel, so one sharpening will last for a long time. The product has a comfortable small handle with a recess for your finger.
Benchmade Contego 810 | This tool may seem large, since when opened it is more than 23 cm long. But the knife is very convenient for any work. The quality of the steel is such that it can cut very hard materials. The handle will not slip in your hand, even when wet or in the cold.
Zero Tolerance K0562 | It is also a massive product, but due to the shape of the blade and the ergonomic handle it is suitable for any job - from cutting branches to chopping food. The blade is thin, sharp, and nothing sticks to it. There are 2 finger grooves on the handle.
Benchmade Shane Sibert Vicar | Its length when opened is just over 22 cm. The handle is durable and non-slip, as it has rough linings. The butt has a small protrusion, the blade is pointed, and the blade is rounded. For the metal part, CPM S30V steel was used. |

Rating is always subjective
This list can be endless, and most importantly, no one has described the exact number of all varieties. Since one small element of the blade can classify it into a certain group.
But there are quite a lot of experts in edged weapons. One will classify this blade as one type, and another as another. And there have always been such disputes around, there are and there will be even more of them. And there is no strict world classification of knives. As a result, it may happen that the same blade is classified into different groups.
And even the experts making conclusions will not know about this. In general, it turned out to be a “porridge”, but we didn’t just brew it like that. Ratings of knives actually exist, for example, for specific purposes. Having called the article so loudly “the best knives in the world”, there is no need to be disingenuous.
The review will actually contain blades that everyone should definitely know about. And they are considered the best knives in their field.
But we are not going to assign them any places, and the numbering assigned to the blade does not indicate its place in the ratings. This applies to the entire article.

Sissipuukko m/95: Finnish Rangers knife
For centuries, Finnish puukko knives have been an integral part of the life of Finnish hunters, fishermen, and indeed almost all rural residents of Suomi. Simple and convenient, “puukko” coped well with all daily tasks, and on occasion they could come in handy in a fight with a wild animal, a friendly stabbing at the nearest drinking establishment, or in hand-to-hand combat with an enemy soldier.
The Sissipuukko knife Sissipuukko m/95, which since the end of the last century has become the standard combat knife of the Finnish rangers, is a direct descendant of traditional Finnish knives. It was developed by Finnish army captain Peltonnen. The blade is 15 centimeters long, with a one-sided sharpening, a slight bevel of the butt to the tip and a comfortable synthetic handle without a guard. m/95 has a black coating that does not give glare in the dark. The knife is great for everyday work, but can also be used for hand-to-hand combat. A very convenient thing!
Each of the blades in our selection is versatile, powerful and, in addition, very practical. It’s quite difficult to name the best among them; it’s a matter of taste. Which one would you choose?
Legendary knives
Legendary knives are known to all lovers of these products, regardless of country of origin:
- Finca . This is an army knife with a short narrow blade and a smooth wooden handle. Looks very simple, but a later version has a guard. And the handle tapers slightly at the base for a more comfortable grip.
- Bowie knife . Also a military weapon, born in the USA during the Wild West. It is characterized by a thin point, a beveled spine, and the presence of a guard.
- Ka-Bar . This is a heavy military product that saved the lives of American Marines in the war with Japan. Later it was used in Korea, Afghanistan, Iraq. The Ka-Bar is also useful as a survival knife.
- Kukri . This is an Asian weapon, with a curved but very strong blade. The Gurkhas used it successfully in the war against the British. The product is also suitable for performing household work.
Watch the video about legendary knives:
The category of “legendary knives of the world” also includes the following products:
- a navaja from Spain with a long and thin blade hidden in the hilt;
- machete, which was used in Latin America and Spain in the fight against enemies and in agricultural work;
- karambit, designed to solve military problems using a curved blade and a handle in the form of brass knuckles;
- balisong, which has an original design and is very dangerous;
- tanto - a samurai weapon, with a sharp short blade disguised in a bamboo sheath;
- gold miner's butcher knife, with an original handle located perpendicular to the blade;
- Sebenza knife, a classic folding knife, but very reliable, convenient, and therefore in demand for many decades.
Mk.I model 1918: trench knife
This knife was created by order of American soldiers who fought in the trenches of the First World War. Theoretically, the blade could be used for some household needs, but in fact its main purpose was to give the owner a last chance in a brutal hand-to-hand fight in one’s own or someone else’s trenches.
The knife had a double-edged blade 17 centimeters long, suitable for both piercing and cutting blows, and a bronze handle with a brass knuckle guard, which allowed you to protect your hand and deliver effective blows to the enemy. The conical pommel of the handle, which served to secure the blade, could also be used to deliver crushing thrusts.
Knives of this type were also used during World War II, mainly in the US Marine Corps.
Quality knives: characteristics
High-quality knives meet the following requirements:
- The value corresponding to the purpose of the tool. This is, for example, a machete, which is convenient for cutting through tropical thickets.
- Convenience, which also depends on the purpose of use. We are talking about a reliable, non-slip handle, a sharp blade, and a good blade shape.
- Sufficient strength of the material. It should be carbon or alloy steel for the blade, strong wood, high-quality plastic, micarta, kraton for the handle.
Biggest
The largest knife of all categories is, perhaps, the Skramasax. It is very similar to a sword in size (35-55 cm, but there is also 75 cm), as well as its purpose. This is a military weapon with a blade much larger than the handle.
Scramasax
There is also a Tramontina machete. It is intended for cutting down tropical vegetation, but has also been used as a military weapon. The product is characterized not only by an impressive blade that resembles a cleaver, but also by the flexible steel of this working part of the weapon.
The most comfortable
The most convenient knife can be found if you know what it will be used for:
- on a camping trip you need a folding one with many blades;
- for hunting and fishing - monolithic, with a powerful short blade, non-slip handle;
- For everyday wear, a small universal one is suitable, which is easy to get and can be used for different jobs;
- in the kitchen, the convenience of the tool depends on the product you are dealing with and the type of activity (cutting, shredding, separating meat from bones, etc.).
But the most important thing is how the knife lies in the owner’s hand. That is, at least the size of the palm and personal preferences matter. So everyone has their own convenient product.
The most durable
The most durable knife in the world is made of powdered carbon or chromium steel (blade) and a handle made of synthetic material (G10, kraton, micarta). The cuttings are also all-metal or titanium. But this does not mean the tool is easy to use. And the high-carbon steel of the blade does not always make it ideal.
Pata
0
Pata is a weapon invented in India. It was originally used by the ancient Maratha warrior caste, and later this weapon spread throughout most of India. In essence, it was a sword attached to a gauntlet, but, unlike a regular glove, such a weapon protected the arm up to the elbow. Since the entire structure from the tip of the sword to the elbow was solid, Maratha warriors were unable to move their wrist, so all movement had to come from the elbow. It is believed that such weapons were more often used by horsemen.

The most expensive knives
The most expensive knives are usually decorated with precious metals and stones and created by hand:
- Pearl of the East . This item is forged from 18-karat gold, and the handle and scabbard are decorated with diamonds and emeralds. It looks like a dagger 32.5 cm long, the blade is sharpened on both sides. But gold is a soft metal, so the Pearl of the East is more of a jewelry rarity. It is in a private collection and costs more than 2 million dollars.
- Nesmuk Jahrhundert Messer . This is a large kitchen tool with a Damascus steel blade. That is, theoretically, it can be used for its intended purpose, but its handle is made from bog oak, which was 5 thousand years old at the time of production of the Nesmuk Jahrhundert Messer. And it is also decorated with a platinum edging with 25 diamonds. Therefore, the price of the product is 100 thousand dollars.
- Nesmuk Diamond Studded . A kitchen tool whose blade is the same shape as the previous product. But it is made of multi-layer carbon steel, which makes the blade unusually sharp. The handle of the product is finished in silver and decorated with 8 diamonds. And its price is 40 thousand dollars.
- Searpoint Lace . This is a folding automatic weapon made of Damascus steel, the handle of which is completely covered with handmade engraving. It is also decorated with gold. The precious metal, the pattern of the handle and reliability in use allow us to set the price of the product at 25 thousand dollars.

Five original blades
In the process of knifemaking evolution, many original blades were born. To this day they amaze with their qualities and originality of forms. All these knives can be safely called in one word - legendary.
There are conversations about them to this day. And some of them were designed 2 centuries ago. And in terms of their profile, they are still not inferior to modern products.
DE Henry Bowie
The Bowie knife has a history dating back to the 1830s. It was a large cleaver with a bevel on the butt, the so-called “pike”. And the famous blacksmith made replicas of a Bowie knife for hunting in the 1960s. This blacksmith's name was Daniel Edward Henry.
But, despite the fact that these were copies of a famous blade, he performed them very skillfully. They say that he had no equal in sharpening blades. Today, such knives can only be found among collectors, and they will certainly be the pride of the entire collection.

Randall Model 3
One day Bo Rendall saw a handmade product by master William Skagel. And he was so fascinated by his work that he decided to open his own knife-making workshop.
In 1936, he realized his dream and began producing handmade knives.
His production consisted of twenty main models, all of them were unique and good. But, as it often happens, model number 3 wins the hearts of many knife lovers, and Ser Bo Rendall himself was delighted with it.
Due to many qualities, and especially the beauty of the product, many amateurs tried to copy it. And some even succeeded. But a real blade can only be purchased from Randall Made Knives, this is a guarantee that you are not holding a fake in your hands.

Folding Ron Lake
Ron Lake was born in 1941 in the USA. Growing up, he was engaged in the automotive craft in various workshops. But one day, it was the 1960s, he was asked to restore one blade, and he did an excellent job.
And most importantly, this life situation pushed him to develop his own knives. First - a hobby, then - the meaning of life. It also happens. His handcrafted Tail-Lock folding knife has been the ultimate folding knife for over 30 years.
The handle has inserts made of animal horns, which gives it a truly unique look. All Lake blades have unique shapes, some models are quite unusual to the human eye, but this does not prevent them from being the most durable among their competitors.

Ulu
Quite an interesting specimen, a working tool of the North American Indians. Having a crescent-shaped blade, it can be used perfectly with food obtained during hunting. Be it wild boar or any local fish.
The handle is located directly above the blade, a very interesting specimen. And most importantly, it is still used for its intended purpose. There are also souvenir options for sale, but it is the working version that can be purchased from the Knives of Alaska company.

Knife Nessmuk
The famous traveler and "extreme" of that time, George Washington Sears. He loved various adventures and once he went canoeing along the Adirondack Ridge. Taking with you a minimum of equipment, including a homemade blade.
At the end of the trip, he wrote a book where he repeatedly mentioned this very knife, which was an excellent helper in difficult times. This is how this blade won the attention of many knife lovers. And it received its name in honor of its inventor.

But their products are more suitable for professionals due to their high cost. For home cooking, the best brands of knives in terms of price and quality ratio:

"Randall Model 1": universal combat knife

One of Randall’s most famous knives was the Model 1 “All Purpose Fighting Knife.” These rather large Bowie-style knives had blades ranging from five to eight inches (12.5 - 21 cm) in length with a one-and-a-half edge and a solid bronze guard. They were mainly purchased privately by the US military.
Randall's knives earned considerable popularity, first during World War II, and then in Korea and Vietnam.

The best knife makers
The best knife makers are known much less than the products they developed and the production companies they created, but history has preserved the names:
- William Moran, who made unique Bowie pieces;
- Chris Reeve, creator of the famous Sebenza (a folding knife with a framelock type lock);
- Ken Onion, who worked for Kershaw and created the original folding Kershaw Leek;
- Ernst Emerson, who invented the Emerson CQC-7, many other models and became the founder of the Emerson company;
- Joseph Opinel, who created the Opinel company and produced budget, but very worthy and practical guns;
- Tim Leatherman, who perfected multifunctional Swiss knives and created the Wave system.
In our time, the following names have become known:
- Kit Carson - creator of the CRKT M16;
- Belarusian Dmitry Sinkevich, collaborating with Zero Tolerance;
- Les George, another master of Zero Tolerance;
- Lynn Thompson, who created Cold Steel;
- Kiku Matsuda, who works closely with Spyderco, SOG and creates custom pieces.
Watch the video about the legend of designer Japanese knives Kiku Matsuda:
Konchar
Slavic edged weapons were borrowed from the eastern peoples. It is believed that its homeland was India. Many people classify konchar as a type of sword. It had a thin and narrow blade, which was sharpened in various ways - three and four edges. Konchar was ideal for direct, precise strikes and was capable of piercing even chain mail; its design made the weapon very durable and light.
Rare
Rare knives are those that belong to the culture of a particular nationality, are distinguished by their originality, and in our time have become more like antiques than regularly used:
- Nepalese khukri;
- Indian kuttar;
- German rondel dagger;
- Japanese sai;
- Javanese Kris;
- African wrist knife.
There are other weapons that were not widespread before because of their originality or high cost. Rare instruments include those that were once produced in small quantities, not for a wide range of buyers, and whose production has ceased. These are, for example, the German trench Mark1, the Soviet Titan, Vostok.
We recommend reading the article about knife handle options. From it you will learn how to make a handle for a knife, how to attach a blade to a knife handle, and whether it is possible to use a knife without a handle. And here is more information about throwing knives.
The variety of knives makes it possible to choose, but also makes it difficult. It must be taken into account that the tool must be convenient for the owner and meet his goals. This means that you should choose not only based on price and prestige, but first of all “for yourself”, then the knife will last a long time and will be a good helper.
Tekko
0
Tekko is an Okinawan weapon known as the "iron fist" in some provinces. It was traditionally made of wood and metal, and the blade was shaped like a crescent. There were three small spikes on the rim of the tekko, with which they tried to hit the joints, ribs and collarbones. If the enemy tried to grab the forearms of the owner of such brass knuckles, then a simple turn of the wrist was enough to cut his hands.
Double Shadow
Let's complete the film trilogy with the Double Shadow knife from the American Gil Hibben. The general shape of the handle and blade of this “combat” knife was clearly inspired by Swiss double-edged daggers of the 18th and 19th centuries, but by some unknown inspiration the blade of the “Double Shadow” was split lengthwise into two halves.
From the point of view of poking such a knife into the soft body of a living person or animal, this splitting only causes harm, increasing the chances of the blade getting stuck during a poking strike. And the strength of the blade decreases. But it looks, as befits a movie prop, nowhere more lethal. That’s why the knife appeared not just anywhere, but in the action movie Expendables II.
