When I agreed to write this article, I never thought that I would be faced with the difficulty of finding the author-inventor of the bullpup weapon assembly. The injustice of history pushed the name of this man into the pit of oblivion, the reason for this is most likely eternal military secrecy, which is a pity. The only certainty is that the invention came from the British, hence the name, so unusual to the Russian ear. Bullpup literally means a bulldog puppy (English, of course). Only short-sighted skeptics could dub this new product on the arms market for its apparent shortness and snub nose.
The first attempts to make long-barreled weapons shorter without sacrificing barrel length looked something like this:
Thorneycroft Cavalry Carbine (Great Britain, 1901)
One of the first known attempts to shorten a military rifle through the use of a bullpup layout. The idea turned out to be so revolutionary that for more than half a century it did not go beyond semi-experimental, single samples. The flight of engineering thought was awakened and turned towards the bullpup in the early 50s of the last century, as expected, by the echo of the Second World War, in which the military felt an acute shortage of compact high-precision tactical weapons. This is how His Majesty Bullpup made his first serial appearance at the parade of gun showrooms...
Modern military missions involve spending a long time inside the vehicle, then quickly, covertly moving to the firing line to fire one or a series of accurate shots, and just as covertly, but seven times faster, leaving that same line while the mortar men and all those who shoot loudly and powerful, did not turn the shooter into mincemeat. A fighter with a Mosinka and a classic SVD performing all this would look very comical, but a 70cm long bullpup turns out to be an indispensable assistant.
Models appeared like mushrooms after the rain, and gunsmiths, caught up in the new trend, kept coming up with new versions of short assault rifles.

Experimental English assault rifle EM-2 developed by the Enfield Arsenal, caliber .280 (7x43 mm), 1951. EM-2 was even officially adopted for service, but never went into mass production
Two 5.56-mm assault rifles manufactured by Vector (South Africa) - at the top - R5 standard configuration (total length 870/615 mm, barrel length - 332 mm), at the bottom - bullpup CR21 (total length 760 mm, barrel length - 460 mm).
Our domestic gunsmiths did not lag behind, such as German Aleksandrovich Korobov, who created wonderful models of short assault weapons in the bullpup configuration
Korobov assault rifle TKB-408
Caliber: 7.62x39mm mod. 1943, type of automatic: gas vent, locking by tilting the bolt, length: 790 mm, weight: 4.3 kg, magazine: 30 rounds
Korobov assault rifle TKB-022P
TKB-022P weight without magazine 2.5 kg with weapon length 635 mm, caliber: 7.62x39mm
That's enough about the war. I am a peaceful person and I will start shooting at people only if trouble happens in the country, but I just love to shoot, and I would hardly exchange the pleasure of a good shot for anything... Further, my story will be exclusively about civilian weapons, accessible to the “uncarried” person.
Unfortunately, hunting firearms in the bullpup configuration have not found widespread use in Russia. The reason for this is the weapons legislation, which excludes independent modifications, and the inertia of the hunters themselves, who prefer the classics. The bullpup found the most fertile soil in the segment of air guns, namely PCP rifles, simply created for compact design. Looking at mass-produced models, one cannot help but notice the ergonomics and functionality with which they are made. The concept of “nothing extra” - severe minimalism - easy, simple, convenient...

Let's look at the advantages and disadvantages of a bullpup. Let's start with the advantages:
- A bullpup shot is always technically more accurate than a classic shot. The main reason for this is the absence of “parasitic” parts and overhangs, eliminating biological interference. The bullet starts from the shooter's shoulder rest, and the distance from the supporting hand to the muzzle is minimal. Neither heartbeat nor blood pulsation distorts the result of the shot. Therefore, the bullpup is ideal for handheld shooting.

- The weapon is compact. It's no secret that our police really don't like a man with a gun. If you always go to the shooting site in your own car, this concerns you to the least extent. But what about those who dared to step into the subway with a gun case on their shoulder in order to get to the station and only then, getting off the train into the forest, setting up targets, and indulging in their favorite pastime?! How many times you will be examined “with passion” depends only on the number of rulers you meet on the way to your cherished joys... The owner of a bullpup can simply put it at the bottom of a sports bag or in a saxophone case, remaining unnoticed by the above-mentioned troubles.
Ataman BULLPUP M2R 416C/RB 6.35 (Walnut):
- Suitable for all people, regardless of their anthropometric data. All adjustments are made by installing the cheekpiece and the long Weaver rail, which allows you to move the scope back and forth. Whether you are fat or thin, tall or short, a bullpup will always be the right size for you.
- Possibility of shooting from the left shoulder. The disadvantage of the bullpup firearm miraculously turned into an advantage on the PCP rifles. There are no powder gases hitting the face from a firearm, and cartridges flying up the shooter’s collar, but, as you know, there is no trial... Is reloading inconvenient?
- Possibility of shooting with one hand. For me, this is a very dubious virtue... Shooting from a long barrel with one hand is the lot of very depraved shooting perverts. The meaning of such shooting in my head does not go beyond the desire to show off, unless, of course, the shooter is a one-armed person... I will not comment on this advantage.

Now about the shortcomings... No matter how much I tried, I found only two:
1.Ugly. This is what adherents of the classical weapons school say. Yes, yes, a short, snub-nosed bulldog puppy. Here it must be said that many of us learned at school: felt-tip pens have different tastes and colors. What is beautiful and what is not is very subjective. It is unlikely that anyone will be puzzled by the question: “What is more beautiful? Airplane or steam locomotive? These are two different products that perform one task - delivering something or someone from point “A” to point “B”. So is the bullpup with the “classic” - two different products with one task - delivering a projectile to the target. Everyone has their own beauty...
2. Small number of serial factory models. Alas, nothing can be done about this... They are in no hurry to create their models, however, this niche of the market is actively occupied by the masters of tuning companies and offer options for Bullpup kits for every taste, color and budget, turning this disadvantage into a very serious advantage.

Owning a hand-made rifle has always been and will remain a source of pride for its owner. When a person has something that was done for him and for him, the irrepressible ego always fills his head with thoughts of some superiority. I won’t hide it, pleasant thoughts...

VS-121 is a new Russian bullpup. Waiting for answers
My previous blog post has turned into a whole article being prepared for the June issue of KALASHNIKOV, and touching, among other things, on new products from Izhmash. My impression of one of them, the “fundamentally new rifle” VS-121, was based solely on the factory press release. After reading it, I had several questions for the creators of the rifle, which I propose to answer on the pages of our magazine.
So, excerpts from the Izhmash press release: “The first prototype VS-121 was developed on the platform of the Dragunov sniper rifle. During the development process, the sample will be equipped with a new trigger mechanism. In addition, the operation of the automation will be improved... At the moment, the sample is undergoing comprehensive testing. According to the chief designer of Izhmash, Vladimir Zlobin, the rifle turned out to be compact and light - its weight with a heavy barrel does not exceed 4.5 kg ... "
Here are my questions: 1. Can a weapon developed on the basis of an existing and proven platform be considered fundamentally new (this is a factory characteristic)? 2. What is bad about the SVD trigger mechanism, which is planned to be replaced with a new one? 3. What doesn’t suit weapon operators about the operation of SVD automation? Why does it need to be improved? 4. What is comprehensive testing? 4. Explain how different the mass of the VS-121 is from the mass of the SVD, if this characteristic of the new product is cited as an achievement? 5. For what purpose is a radius butt plate used on military weapons that does not provide uniformity and convenience of application when firing from various positions and when used with a variety of equipment (body armor, unloading, winter/summer uniforms)? 6. Based on what ergonomic studies are the cutouts for the fingers on the fire control handle marked and why are there horizontal rather than vertical marks on its back surface? 7. Do the developers consider the distance from the butt plate to the trigger to be 40 cm acceptable? If the answer is “yes,” then how is it possible to shoot a rifle from a prone position or in protective equipment from any position for a shooter even with average upper limb length?
Please note that I personally do not consider all questions to be rhetorical, but my opinion on them may seem like speculation. But the author’s answers, even on such a short list, would allow the weapons community to form an impression of the chief designer of Izhmash and, perhaps, destroy some stereotypes in the perception of modern weapons in general and Izhmash weapons in particular.
PS Since April, we have been pestered by today’s protest action by Izhmash workers, which is supposed to take place in Moscow. So, firstly, KALASHNIKOV is not involved in politics, and, secondly, this matter is somehow murky. The atmosphere around the action is strange, clannish, understandable, probably, only to the audience of the radio station “Echo of Moscow”.

Today, May 23, the press service of Izhmash contacted the editorial office and notified us that Vladimir Zlobin was ready to answer the questions asked.
I proposed to prepare an article on behalf of Izhmash and its chief designer for the July issue. We wait. Photo courtesy of the Izhmash press service
