Gamo CFX: how to strengthen the Gamo air rifle, make it more powerful

The Gamo company was founded in Barcelona (Spain) in 1880. Initially it produced lead bullets for firearms, but in the forties of the last century it specialized in the production of high-quality bullets for pneumatics. For several decades now, the corporation has been a leader in the market of bullets and accessories for air rifles and air pistols. A logical continuation of the development of the company’s product range was the production of pneumatic weapons. The Gama air rifle was liked by hunters and athletes from many countries. Today Industrias El Gamo is one of the largest European manufacturers of pneumatics.

General characteristics of Gamo air rifles (Gam)

The success of Gamo pneumatics is largely due to the fact that the company itself produces and tests all the components of its products. The metal parts of rifles are made from high-quality weapon steel. The most expensive types of gun stocks are made of solid walnut or beech.

To test products, every 90 minutes one product is selected on the conveyor line and checked for all parameters. Including ten thousand shots are fired from it. Then wear is assessed. In addition, each copy is meticulously checked before packaging.

The company's products are represented quite widely in Russian stores. The most common rifles are those equipped with a 25*100 compressor. These are the model ranges CFX, CF30, viper, Whisper, shadow, IGT.

Gamo air rifles are often restyled, so almost identical rifles are often sold under different names. Most Gamo rifles are made on the same base. Their components are interchangeable, the gamo rifle's usability is the same.

Models CF30, CFR, CFX are cocked using a lever located under the barrel. The remaining modifications are a turning point. The difference between them lies in the design, material and finishing of the stock, in the little things.

Current prices for gamo rifles can be classified as average. The same can be said about quality. They are more powerful than the domestic MP512, more durable than the Turkish Hatsan, and even have certain design advantages over the more expensive Spanish Cometa and Norica. There are a number of Chinese and Turkish clones of this company’s products from the Iberian Peninsula on the market. It is also worth watching the material about the Mosin sniper rifle and the SVDK video.

Upgrade

To return the true technical characteristics of the rifle you need to:

  1. make sure that the piston is not drilled, and close the weakening hole in any way - with a bolt, solder;
  2. drill the bypass hole to two-thirds of the caliber (3.2 mm);
  3. install a reinforced spring - it’s better to use a gas spring; its length should be such that the preliminary compression is at least 2 mm.

The gas spring is installed without a guide. If it is combined with the compressor plug, then it must be cut off on a lathe without damaging the threads.

The design of the barrel allows you to replace the decorative muzzle with a three-chamber moderator, which is secured with a locking screw.

The video shows a more complex upgrade of the Gamo Socom 1250 rifle, available only to “advanced” users:

The rifle is perfect for both professional athletes and hunters, as well as those starting to master this craft. Professionals note the series for its high build quality and reliability of working elements. The rifle is very simple and unpretentious in operation and maintenance, which makes it even more attractive given its low price.

The stock and body of the Gamo G-Magnum 1250 are made of impact-resistant plastic, which makes the rifle an excellent option for use at any time of the year and in any climatic conditions. Special soldering on the entire structure allows you to hold the weapon more comfortably and will not slip out when shooting. The handle and stock of the classic type also contribute to increased comfort. The rifled barrel is manufactured by a Spanish company and has an increased service life. The use of such a design allows you to increase the accuracy of fire by increasing the resistance of the bullet to oncoming air.

The energy for the shot is supplied thanks to the operation of a spring-piston system, which is distinguished by the simplicity of its working mechanisms and increased strength. The spring and piston, when interacting, supply air to the barrel, pushing out the lead bullet at a nominal speed of 380 m/s. For reloading, a breaking system is used, with the bullet immersed directly into the breech.

Which optics should you choose?

The choice of an optical device may depend on several factors, so it is worth considering not only the price, but also the magnification and brand of optics.

If you plan to use a rifle for shooting at long distances, then you should choose among models of sights with high magnification (a significant degree of zoom). For close-range shooting - low.

During testing, the Bushnell 3-9×40 AOGD optical device performed best. The model is designed for hunting big game and has the following characteristics:

  • The tube is all metal.
  • Shockproof, waterproof.
  • No fogging.
  • Multilayer coating of optics.
  • Adjusting horizontal and vertical adjustments (the drums turn easily).
  • Filling: dry nitrogen.
  • Multiplicity – 3-9x.

The body of the structure is made of light aluminum alloy and is also coated with an anti-corrosion substance.

Device

The length of the barrel with muzzle is 45 cm, and the total length of the gun is 116 cm. The Royal model is ergonomic and excellently balanced. The presence of additional optical equipment affects the balance to a small extent.

The stock is bamboo, suitable only for right-handers. The buttstock is equipped with a rubber butt pad to ensure the most comfortable use. The steel barrel is distinguished by the presence of 12 rifling.

CHOC (choke constriction) – absent. The open type sight consists of a front sight attached to the muzzle. The brightly colored front sight is presented in the form of a piece of fiberscopic threads and is clearly visible in the twilight.

In front of the bullet receiver, the rear sight is secured to the “breech” of the receiver (with 2 screws). It features micrometric vertical and horizontal adjustment and is also equipped with fiberopic fibers.

On the back side of the receiver there is space for installing an optical device (dovetail). For mounting optics, it is recommended to install a special monoblock-type mount (bracket), which significantly reduces the effect of recoil on the optics during a shot.

The receiver has a fixed steel breech and barrel. On the lower part of the bolt there is a longitudinal cutout that allows movement of the erection rod. The bullets are fed (manually) through a window located in the front part of the bolt.

The erection lever is connected to a longitudinal rod, due to which the trigger is blocked during the cocking of the gun. A non-automatic safety is installed in front of the trigger.

The bolt of the original Gamo design (CFX) is a cylindrical part that rotates along the longitudinal axis in front of the breech section in the receiver. Equipped with a sealing bypass ring with a significant service life.

Explosion diagram of the Gamo rifle

To load the rifle, moving to the left (counterclockwise) opens the way to the bullet entrance. A clockwise turn connects the air channel to the compressor, as well as the breech end of the barrel.

The compressor chamber is sealed by a rubber ring located in the rear part of the valve in a longitudinal groove. The original configuration of the cuff creates excellent compression up to 4 thousand shots.

The heat-strengthened steel piston has a lower side hook. The back of the trigger mechanism is made of plastic. The rod and levers are made of steel.

In full accordance with the name (SOCOM - Special Operations Command), the Spanish armory has developed this series of magnum-class air rifles in a military-tactical style.

It is based on the most popular “Shadow” (“Shadow-1000”), which, in turn, is a more modern version of the long-time bestseller on the market – “Gamo Hunter-440” with a 25x100 mm compressor. The fact that the majority of Chinese, Turkish and, as it were, “European” rifles with a lower piston hook are its clones speaks volumes about the sophistication of the design.

Of course, the appearance has undergone tremendous changes. The photo shows “Hunter-440” and “Socom Tactical” (all pictures can be enlarged).

And below are the actual prototype “Shadow-1000” and the least sophisticated of the series, the basic “Socom-1000”.

The “tactical facelift” did not bypass the relatively small class of “supermagnums”. In the photo, its progenitor is the great “Gamo Hunter-1250” in .

But they deserve a completely separate conversation. Just like another rifle ( “SOCOM-1100” ), which will be discussed at the end of the article. It’s not even a matter of record power figures and solid dimensions; the design itself is significantly different from the usual Gamova “breakthroughs”.

For our today’s rather user rather than technical review, let’s take as an example one of the representatives of the series -

To begin with, a brief excursion into the tactical and technical characteristics .

  1. The weight and dimensions (weight 3100 g, length 110 cm) are almost the same as those of real rifles, for example, the very popular Remington 700 SPS or Sako 85 Bear Black all over the world. Therefore, if we do not touch upon the shooting itself, all training with such an “air” will be fully consistent with the realities of firearms.
  2. Speed indicators . They are contained in the digital indices of the basic “Shadow” or “Socom” - 1000 feet per second, which corresponds to the passport 305 meters per second. True, in reality the speed is about 240 m/s with “heavy” (10.5 grains/0.68 grams) or 270 m/s with half-gram (approx. 8 grains) bullets. All pneumatic manufacturers achieve beautiful marketing figures by using a very light (less than 0.4 gram) projectile made of an unknown alloy, which is strictly prohibited from being fired from “magnums” - the result is almost an analogue of a “blank” shot that is destructive for powerful rifles (see “Bullets for pneumatics "). It’s understandable: “nothing personal – just business.” That is why automakers switched to measuring power characteristics on the engine shaft, and not on the wheel of the car itself, as was the case before. And now the subcompact Sikapulka sometimes looks even cooler on paper than the business class sedan of the 80s and 90s...
  3. “Power” , or more precisely, energy. As befits unlicensed (in Russia) civilian weapons, all of them are weakened by the manufacturer to 7.5 joules. This is mainly now achieved by reducing the diameter of the bypass - a calibrated hole between the “chamber” and the cylinder (pictured). Although I came across a copy where, along with this “option,” there was a long-forgotten drilled piston - it is clear that the rifle could not fire at all. In the original version, the energy indicators fully comply with the requirements of magnum class pneumatics - an average of 20 joules. By manipulating the bypass and spring preload, they can be varied from 17 to 23 J. In the first case, the rifle acquires very good characteristics in terms of accuracy, but requires the use of light bullets; in the second case, the accuracy begins to approach “hatsans”. Therefore, a compromise of 20 J looks like a good option. Moreover, with the currently permitted hunting with pneumatics, they are quite sufficient for any of the types of game indicated in the “List”. For details, also see the article “Air rifles for hunting.”

Even from photographs it is easy to see that they are contained in one part - the barrel. More precisely, the trunks themselves are essentially the same, but due to their external design they have their own characteristics.

The basic “Socom-1000” has the same barrel as most of the Gamow “breakthroughs” that originated from the classic “Hunter-440”.

"Socom Tactical" has a so-called sound moderator, usually called a silencer. What’s most interesting is that this plastic knob does its job quite well, although it does require periodic cleaning of the cameras.

The Socom Carbine Lux does not have it, but the thickened barrel itself, coated with a special polymer, with or without fullers, looks very solid - just like a real match barrel.

Let me remind you that at the moment of firing from any weapon, the behavior of the barrel resembles a snake convulsing. Thick “match” barrels are designed to dampen these vibrations, which is why they are mainly used in sports or sniper shooting.

But in this case, I attribute it more to a purely aesthetic aspect - the rifle really looks nice.

It's quite high. This is evidenced by the branded sticker, which began to be used in recent years, naturally improving the real quality.

As for the bed.

The polymer is really excellent, in my opinion, no worse than that of German air rifles or real North American or European rifles.

The shape of the fore-end is optimal for any grip – “hunting” or “sporting”; it lies confidently and comfortably in the hand.

The pistol grip is designed for sport. And the adjustable cheek-comb of the butt came from the same place. Compare with the high-end MP-573 match rifle.

The barrels of all the Gamo rifles that I have come across recently are also quite up to standard: no transverse marks or displaced channels, which the Spaniards themselves once sinned with and which is regularly found on weapons from “non-European” manufacturers. The rifling and factory bevels are impeccable.

And one more thing: over the years of merciless use, there was no looseness or sagging of the barrel, the fracture and locking are still as clear as before. This is about the notorious Gamova plastic couplings and crossbars, which supposedly burst, wear out, etc. Although the rifle shown in the photo has been in many hands, including completely inexperienced ones, and sometimes even “diesel”, it is still far from the first spring and cuff in it.

The same can be said about a riveted rather than monolithic platoon rod. Gamov's mainsprings, although stiffer than those of the German Diana, are clearly not as strong as Khatsan's, so the strength of two strips of Spanish metal is quite enough.

And what - there are no shortcomings? Where would we be without them? Here it is - the curse of all rifles of this type is buying fastening screws, there is a great secret. But it is very difficult to do without torn splines during disassembly and reassembly.

Fortunately, the supplier of the optical sights seemed to be selected by another department of the company.

They come with the Socom Carbine Lux version, which has no open sights at all. The most commonly used are pancratic Gamo 3-9x40 IR WR with a duplex mesh.

The fastening is not rings, but exclusively a monoblock with a stopper, which is very useful for use with magnum rifles. And although the real manufacturer is clearly located far to the east of Spain, the fastener splines do not even think of getting lost.

And the sight itself is quite sane. With sufficient complexity (variable magnification from 3 to 9x, adjustable reticle illumination, diopter adjustment), nothing bad happens to it even after many years of intense shooting.

True, I personally would prefer a “constant” 4x or 6x, but with parallax adjustment, which would not hurt at “pneumatic” distances. Moreover, after experimenting a little with the zoom, I left it at “four” and never touched the adjustment wheel again. Beginners, as usual, set the maximum magnification, and then try to catch the center of the target jerking back and forth in a “cross” and admire the “moons” of parallax.

For that matter, on a completely different rifle, when shooting up to 300 meters, 6x36 is quite enough. At short (precisely pneumatic) distances - from the approach, "on the roar" - it is generally better to work with standard open sights, fortunately, the design of the optics with a side bracket allows this.

By the way, about shooting.

It is no different from any of Gam’s “magnum fractures” or their clones. In comparison with the Diana-31, a slight loss in shooting comfort is noticeable - this is due to a stiffer spring and the lower hook of the piston. And also the trigger mechanism is not as advanced as that of the “German”. "Hatsan Striker 1000s", on the contrary, is much tougher and rougher in everything, including the shot itself. It’s clear that we are comparing rifles of comparable power and only spring-piston ones.

The difference is also noticeable when cocking rifles. When shooting from most Hatsans, fatigue sets in quite quickly after dozens of shots: the continuous rod, resting against the piston at an angle, distorts it greatly, and you have to not only overcome the resistance of the powerful spring, but also the friction of the piston on the top of the cylinder.

“Gamo” is much easier to cock, since the split rod formed in the hinge pushes the piston strictly along the cylinder axis, and the spring here is weaker. It is precisely due to the soft spring and precise engineering calculations that the platoon of the “Diana” is not particularly strained, although it, like the “Turk”, has continuous thrust.

However, the Germans put composite parts on stronger rifles.

I can note that rapid fatigue when shooting from powerful or not very well designed air rifles also affects its results. But let's get back to Sokom.

Accuracy at distances up to 50 meters fully satisfies the requirements of recreational shooting and hunting. Moreover, both there and here I adhere to the principles set out in the article “Sighting distances for an air rifle for hunting.” In general, you won’t miss either a hazel grouse sitting on a branch or the bottom of a beer can if you have standard shooting training. There are specifics to shooting from pneumatics, for example, features of grip and retention associated with the phenomenon of multidirectional “double recoil” during movement and subsequent rebound of the piston. Otherwise, the difference with normal weapons is small.

What the Gamo product has in common with combat rifles is the strange-looking absence of an automatic safety on pneumatic rifles. Here it is located in front of the trigger.

In a story about the accuracy and accuracy of shooting, it would be necessary to provide photos of targets with bullet holes. But, in my opinion, this figure consists of 60 percent of the level of the shooter himself, 20 percent of the technical accuracy of the weapon, another 10 percent each comes from the ballistics of the ammunition and external factors: weather conditions, terrain, etc. That is, “a piece of paper with holes” characterizes more the degree of cross-eyedness and crookedness of the author than the quality of the rifle.

Although from the already mentioned samples it is possible to build the following chain based on technical accuracy: “Dianka” - “Sokom” - “Stryker”, and “Gamo” will still be closer to the first link. If it is more clear (for firearms), then to a second approximation it will look like the following analogue: “match biathlon” - “Remington 700” - “KO 91/30”. At the same time, the whole trio successfully worked as combat sniper weapons.

If you suddenly want something more serious than Gamov’s Magnums, but more accurate and quieter than the Hatsan, then among the Spanish tactical “breakthroughs” there is also one - the Socom-1100, which produces up to 330 m/s with a half-gram bullet.

As you can see, in style the rifle is closer to the “supermagnum” Socom-1250, in terms of dimensions it is something in between.

In terms of energy, it is also between “magnums” and “supermagnums”. With the exception of the “Sokomov” stock, this rifle is an analogue of the “black” Gamo series, including its original design. In addition, its compressor is not like that of ordinary “Sokoms” (25x100 mm) or even “magnums” from “Hatsan” (27x100 mm), but significantly larger - 29x100 mm (for “supermagnums” - 29x120). Hence the “power”.

How to strengthen

Most of Gamo's air bags are weakened at the factory in order to comply with export conditions. If there is a pentagon on the barrel with the letter "F" in the center, this is a mark for weakened rifles. Loosening is done simply: holes with a diameter of about 3 mm are drilled in the piston wall.

They reduce the pressure in the barrel, and therefore the speed of the bullet. This procedure accelerates the wear of the rifle; it, as well as accessories (optical sight, cuff) will fail faster. Accuracy and accuracy of shooting deteriorate. But you can buy such rifles in a store without permission, and in general they are on Russian shelves for this reason.

It is clear that Russian buyers first of all want to get rid of these “improvements.” There are several methods to strengthen a gamo air rifle.

You can hammer rivets into the holes or seal them by welding. Another way is to insert a pad made of especially strong rubber under the weighting material. Another option is to enlarge the holes with a drill to the diameter of the existing screws, and cut threads into them with a sword. Screw the screws in there, after dipping them in epoxy resin. After the resin has dried, file the caps flush.

Possible tuning (upgrade)

As we have already said, the power of the new Gamo CFX Royal is no more than 7.5 J, so the question often arises of how to increase it in this model. This drawback can be simply solved by replacing the “original” spring with a Magnum model. Professionals will be able to replace it themselves, but we still recommend that beginners seek help from specialists. After changing the spring, the power of the weapon increases 3 times (up to 23 J).

The rifle can be improved at home, namely:

  1. Disassemble the rifle (we described how to do this above).
  2. Replace the factory lubricant with weapon grade lubricant, after cleaning the parts.
  3. Using a needle file (a small file for hand work), clean the sharp edges of the cylinder.
  4. Improve the bypass by drilling (it is best to use a 3 mm drill).
  5. Cover the bolt with clover.
  6. Reassemble (in the exact reverse order of disassembly).

Thanks to these manipulations, productivity increases by 2.5 times, but no breakthroughs are observed (if you shoot at a wooden block).
