The Ukrainian Armed Forces have adopted the Alligator multi-shot large-caliber anti-material hand-loading rifle.

The press service of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reported this on Facebook.

“The main task of the large-caliber Alligator is to destroy enemy fortifications and equipment, including lightly armored equipment,” the Ministry of Defense noted.

The Ministry of Defense added that all parts of the rifle, including the barrel, were made by Ukrainian gunsmiths.

Technical characteristics of the Alligator rifle:

  • caliber - 14.5x114 mm;
  • initial bullet speed is 980 m/s;
  • effective shot range - up to 2000 m;
  • maximum bullet flight range - up to 7000 m;
  • at a distance of 1.5 km, a bullet penetrates a 10 mm armor plate;
  • the total length of the weapon is 2000 mm, the length of the rifle barrel is 1200 mm;
  • The total weight of the rifle without a magazine with cartridges is 22.5 kg.

The rifle is a classic example of a bolt-action small arms with a longitudinally sliding rotary bolt, writes ArmyInform.

It is equipped with a removable box magazine, providing an increased rate of fire, designed for five rounds. The magazine has two attachment points: a front fork hook and a rear latch. The barrel has 8 rifling with a pitch of 419 mm.

The receiver of this rifle is made of steel, the guide surfaces of the bolt in the receiver are chrome-plated, and the chamber and bore of the rifle are also covered with this metal. On the top of the receiver, the designers provided space for installing a Picatinny-type rail. The rifle also received a reliable push-button safety.

New Ukrainian sniper rifle VM MP-UOS

Specialists of the state enterprise "Ukroboronservice" have developed a new sniper rifle VM MP-UOS. In fact, this is a deep modernization of the well-known Mosin rifle of 7.62 mm caliber, model 1891/1930, Soviet production.

It should be noted that the Ukroboronservice enterprise announced the creation of a new type of small arms in its advertising brochure back in September of this year. A demonstration of the prototype was carried out on November 13, 2015. To demonstrate the capabilities of the new development, demonstration shooting was held at the National Guard training ground in Novi Petrivtsi.

Ukrainian gunsmiths have improved these weapons in accordance with NATO standards with the aim of further equipping police and National Guard units.

The new sniper rifle is chambered for 7.62x54 mm and has a barrel length of 730 mm. Its rate of fire reaches 20 rounds per minute. The cartridges are fed from a box magazine in 5 or 10 rounds. The VM MP-UOS rifle is equipped with an optical sight and Harris SBR folding telescopic bipod. During the modernization, the firing range was increased and the recoil when firing was reduced, which, according to the developers, is practically not felt in the new weapon. In addition, due to the use of a silencer, the sound of the shot is significantly reduced, so the rifle can be used covertly.

As part of the re-equipment of the Mosin rifle, other changes were made to its design. So, in particular, the butt and wooden stock were replaced with a new stock, which is made of polymer materials and aluminum alloy, as well as an adjustable butt and pistol grip. The permanent magazine was replaced by a detachable box magazine with a single-row arrangement of cartridges. To install a muffler or muzzle brake-compensator, a thread is provided on the muzzle of the barrel.

According to the press service of the state enterprise Ukroboronservice, all components and parts that are used to modernize the rifle are exclusively Ukrainian-made. In addition, it was stated that the possibility of manufacturing these weapons for export cannot be ruled out.

Following the tradition that has developed recently, the new Ukrainian development was met with heated discussion on the Internet. The novelty was ridiculed, saying that the new development turned out to be a “pre-revolutionary Mosinka.” However, there were also sensible people who critically assessed the work of Ukrainian gunsmiths, noting all the positive and negative aspects of the VM MP-UOS rifle.

Among the “advantages” the following was noted: there are quite a lot of Mosin rifles in the warehouses of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, so the components will be very cheap. In addition, the reliability of the design is beyond doubt. And a good stock, body kit and hanging barrel improves shooting accuracy, which is a huge advantage among similar weapons.

At the same time, critics also note certain negative aspects. Thus, in particular, in Ukraine they do not produce high-quality cartridges of the required caliber. A big problem is that the lion's share of Mosin rifles stored in military warehouses are worn out, so it will be problematic to find high-quality barrels. In addition, the trigger mechanism and bolt do not meet the standards of a sniper weapon. All these “cons” can ultimately lead to the fact that upgrading an old Mosin rifle into a new VM MP-UOS rifle can be too expensive, and the new development can catch up in cost to a Remington 700 Police class rifle.

At present, it is not possible to say that the new Ukrainian development will enter service with the Armed Forces of Ukraine. It is quite possible that there will be new improvements and improvements ahead, but we can already say that such a model has the opportunity to occupy its niche.

Sniper wars in the ATO. What are we fighting with...

Good afternoon to the Sumy Internet community and beyond.
I talked with a comrade, or rather, a friend, who is now in the ATO zone in the sniper department of one of the UNA-UNSO battalions. He got there after the news appeared that among Sumy residents those who had skills in handling sniper weapons and had a “hunting instinct” were wanted. It's no secret that snipers play an important role in war (ground, classical). I won’t go into details - everyone knows them. But a big role in this “sniper war” is played not only by the skill, skill and instinct of the sniper, but also by what

he is armed. I’ll say right away that in this (in armament) we are losing to the enemy - the Russian military and even the separatists, which, however, is the same thing.

Therefore, I was interested in the topic of sniper rifles themselves, which are in service with both Ukraine and Russia. About tanks, airplanes, self-propelled guns, even BUK air defense systems, etc. and so on. There is a lot of information, but I had to do some digging about sniper rifles, but it was worth it! For we are fighting with a wooden stick against a Jedi sword...
