Pistols of movie characters. Great overview of cold weapons in our new video

June 10, 2021

In current realities, the choice of Makarov pistol ammunition is quite scarce. Just a couple of years ago there was plenty to choose from. These are PM-O 10x24, PM-SKH 10tk, Mod-71 10tk, VPO-925 10x24, P-M18X 10x24. But time goes by, the pistols that are really exhausted from the combat ones are running out and we are faced with the fact that they simply don’t exist.

So what are they offering us to buy now? There are only 2 options:

  1. Cooled SHP pistol Makarov-SO (PM) 10TK from Kurs-s Sarapul.
  2. Cooled SHP pistol Makarov PM R-411 (Baikal) 10TK from the Kalashnikov concern Izhevsk.

Let’s take a look at what both pistols are and let everyone decide for themselves what to choose.

See a review of popular cooled pistols and revolvers:

In our new video on Youtube, expert Alexander Romanov clearly and with humor spoke about empty weapons and shot with the most interesting samples that are used to “arm” popular movie characters.
A cooled weapon can be useful to you for practicing your skills in handling a “firearm,” as a collectible, as part of the interior, or as a prop for photo and video shooting.

Reference

The 9x18 cartridge was developed by engineer Semin before the Second World War. The prototype was the German 9 mm Ultra, which was developed by one of the German companies. Oddly enough, these two cartridges cannot replace each other; the domestic model had a diameter of 9.2. The popularity of the Soviet cartridge can be explained by the fact that, with high destructive power, it could be used in blowback weapons. Although the 9x18 had a lower initial speed, as well as bullet energy, compared to the 7.62x25 in service, it had a greater stopping effect. The PM pistol (photo) can be seen below.

Occasion

What was the reason for the introduction of a new pistol? Of course, the negative qualities of the predecessor. The Soviet army was armed with the TT pistol. However, the standard weapons had weak destructive power. The cartridges with which the pistol was equipped were inferior to the German ones (9 mm) used in the Parabellums and Walters. The long length of the TT pistol was also a negative side. However, the most important thing is that the lack of a normal safety mechanism did not make it possible to constantly carry weapons. The simple trigger mechanism was designed for single action. The insecurity repelled everyone, since it was possible to remove the pistol from the safety by accident.

At the same time, German models had a double-action mechanism, which reduced the chance of being hit almost to zero. Interestingly, the more advanced safety system did not at all interfere with firing shots. It was necessary to adopt a new model. Unfortunately, this was difficult under military conditions, so the next pistol, the PM, was put into service after the war. By the way, the Germans also did not like conventional pistols; they preferred submachine guns. The first ones were used only when absolutely necessary, for example when the cartridges ran out. During quite a long period of use of the TT, the requirements that the new model must meet, as well as the concept of its use, were developed. Therefore, we can say that the PM pistol could only appear thanks to the TT.

Requirements

One of the first production samples was the 1949 PM. It had some distinctive features, such as shaped frames, a protrusion to the right of the trigger guard, and a magazine with an oblique protrusion, which was needed to turn off the bolt stop. This was not the final sample.

The requirements for the pistol were as follows:

  • The new weapon should have small dimensions to make it more convenient to use at short distances. The mass should also be kept small for the same reason.
  • The trigger mechanism must work without cocking the hammer, which takes a lot of time.
  • Great destructive power of the bullet, which is necessary for combat. And also the greatest safety during use and reliability of operation under various combat and weather conditions.

Kurs-S Colt 1911 SO

This self-loading pistol was designed by John Browning in 1908. They armed officers and sergeants of the US Army from 1911 to 1985. But even today it is approved for use by the military and police as a personal weapon. The legendary pistol also appeared in many Hollywood action films. You could see it in the hands of Tom Hanks (Saving Private Ryan), Al Pacino (Scent of a Woman), John Travolta (Pulp Fiction).

Makarov Umarex

The model is made of light alloy. The gas cylinder is installed in the handle. The weight of the can is standard, 12 g. The model is one of the most popular in Russia. The difference from the original PM can be called a slightly different design of the store, due to the appearance of the cylinder. The disassembly scheme is not completely copied, but is quite similar to the combat one. It is possible to fire both self-cocking and cocking, which is also a big plus. These functions are also available on the combat PM.

The main advantage is the soft and predictable descent, which is convenient for absolutely everyone. Good accuracy and accuracy of shots are also a big advantage. At a distance of 3 meters the spread is about 10 mm. This model is recommended to be purchased by those for whom it makes no difference whether it is similar to the original or not. Beginners should also pay attention to Makarov Umarex.

Kurs-S K-17 SO

The firearm prototype of this model is the famous Austrian Glock, which is in service with the intelligence services of many countries. Thus, Glock-17 was purchased for special forces of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Interestingly, Glock became a breakthrough in the field of firearms. Prior to this, the company produced bayonet knives, shovels and other tools for the Austrian army. The pistol frame is made of high-strength heat-resistant plastic. Therefore, Glock is lightweight, but extremely durable.

Due to their original appearance, these pistols often appear on movie screens. In particular, Glock is used by Keanu Reeves’ character in the film “John Wick”.

Makarov R-411 (Baikal) forged/cast 10TK:

Cooling applies to decommissioned weapons. The phrase: “decommissioned weapons” inspires confidence for many. But decommissioned weapons are not limited to firearms. The PM 411 is converted not from a firearm, but from a traumatic weapon. Does this make him worse? Definitely not, but the “history” of the pistol disappears. And this applies to the forged bolt. The big question is what samples with a cast bolt are made of, because its price is lower. These samples are always in demand. The model under consideration uses light and sound projectiles of the 10TK line. In addition, the SHP version retains every detail of the original design, which makes it possible to use the weapon with extreme realism. The cooled version weighs 750 g, its body length is 165 mm.

Course-S Brother-2

Brat-2 is made on the basis of the IZH-43 smoothbore hunting rifle. The weapon got its name from the film of the same name. This model reproduces as closely as possible the appearance and design features of its firearm counterpart.

A sawn-off double-barreled shotgun is a classic “criminal” weapon in many regions of the world. The Sicilians call it lupara. This name comes from the word “lupus”, which means “wolf”. Such guns were used by shepherds to protect themselves from wolves, and then began to be used by the Sicilian mafia (Cosa Nostra) to eliminate people. Lupara is found in the cult video game Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven.

Which pistol to choose PM P-411 or PM SO

Advantages of PM R-411:

  • produced on the basis of a combat pistol;
  • the necessary markings identical to the combat markings have been applied;
  • appearance is identical to the combat one;
  • there may be abrasions on the bluing due to use in the Armed Forces;
  • donors were made in the 50-70s;
  • high reliability;
  • large resource of use;
  • Made with high quality.

Minuses:

  • price.

Advantages of PM SO:

  • the price tag is significantly lower than that of competitors;
  • TK10 cartridge is used;
  • good bluing, with a red tint, which is valuable for collectors.

Minuses:

  • differs in appearance from the combat version - there is a hole in the bolt;
  • the shutter is weakened, which reduces the resource;
  • structural differences from a combat pistol when disassembled - the barrel and bolt are made of a single element.
  • made on the basis of OOOP (traumatic pistols) - as a result, of less quality.
  • Donors were produced in the second half of the 90s.

We can conclude that for a collector, or in the form of a gift from which it is expected to shoot often, the best watered-down PM is the P-411 as it is well-made, reliable and outwardly matches its older brother.

It makes sense to buy a PM SO if you don’t have enough finances and you don’t plan to actively use the gun.

Course-C KURS RMK

The PMK pistol is made on the basis of a Soviet weapons legend - the PM pistol designed by Nikolai Fedorovich Makarov. This weapon is popular among shooters in Russia and the countries of the former socialist camp. The industry produces many variants of “civilian” pistols based on the PM design.

The legendary “Makarov”, of course, was used in many Russian films and TV series, for example, in “Brigada”. But more worthy of mention is the fact that this pistol was the first in space. It was the PM that was included in Yuri Gagarin’s emergency reserve.

How cold weapons are made

Now in Russia the production of this type of devices has been suspended, but previously it was on stream. In modern times, only certain categories of individuals or organizations are engaged in such work:

  • production of weapons factories;
  • artisanal alterations;
  • imported models in Ukraine;
  • illegal organizations.

The first cold gun was created. This company has been engaged in mass production for a long time. Nowadays such weapons are necessary for creating scenes on a film set or in the theatrical field. That is, at the moment, cold machine guns/pistols are used exclusively for organizing cultural and educational activities. This type of work is carried out by private specialists who are faced with the task of creating a device of an original design.

Real specialists are able to create weapons of a cold version, which then cannot be reclassified as combat weapons.

Job

Makarov, as he himself said, spent days creating his pistol. A much larger number of samples were made and modified than other competitors. Makarov chose an automatic operation scheme using recoil energy with a free shutter. Assembling the PM pistol was easy. The designer developed a weapon that fully complied with the wishes of the military personnel described above. To summarize, Makarov created an improved mechanism used in the German “Walter”, which significantly improved the quality of the PM. The directions the designer followed can be summarized as follows:

  • simplifying the design and making it easier to work with weapons;
  • functionality of the gun and parts;
  • increasing reliability;
  • increasing the strength of parts, and therefore the gun as a whole;
  • manufacturability required for mass production.

It must be said that the latter direction was necessary. To produce a large number of weapons, it was necessary to mechanize the work as much as possible. This is exactly what most models lacked. The return spring, which was used in the PM pistol, namely around the barrel, made it possible to make the device compact and lightweight when compared with those models where it was located under the barrel.

In addition to all the positive qualities, the Makarov pistol (PM) is reliable in terms of safety. Anyone who uses a weapon need not worry about shooting themselves. The trigger mechanism (trigger mechanism) is a hammer type, double action, with automatic safety locking, which reduces the risk of an accidental shot. It also has a new, at the time of the pistol’s creation, simplified operating system and design, which ensures ease of use and maintenance. Also, the trigger is much more durable when compared with earlier weapons of this type. The gain required to fire a shot in single action mode is 2 kg. When shooting is self-cocking - 4.5 kg. And to the left of the frame there is a lever responsible for the bolt stop.

Contest

Many famous designers put forward their ideas for creating a new pistol. For example, Tokarev, Rakova, Vojvodina and many others. Foreign systems also took part in the competition. Many tests were carried out on pistols. In addition to shooting, there were others. For example, one of the most severe is placing weapons in a pit with sand and water. The Makarov pistol showed stunning results, outperforming other types. However, the designer was advised to make minor modifications, after which the weapon was put into service in 1951. And back in 1949, production began at the Izhevsk plant.

Gas

In addition to the samples described above, others are also popular. The gas pistol PM IZH-79-8 is the leading one among this type of PM-shaped. The design is as close as possible to the original, which is the main positive side. The parts on which pressure occurs as a result of the shot are made of steel, which increases service life. A sleeve is pressed into the thin barrel to increase gas pressure. Also, everything is aimed at making the model impossible to convert into a combat model, namely, some parts of the pistol are weakened, the bushing does not allow the use of cartridges. The caliber is 8 mm, the firing range of the aerosol cloud is about 3 m. Good performance cannot but please users.

Improvement

Refinement and improvement of the pistol were carried out constantly, one of the directions was the disassembly of the PM pistol. Various options were created, tests were carried out, and the technology was developed. At the same time, one cannot fail to note the designers of the above-described plant, who made a huge contribution to the improvement of the samples. The wishes of the military personnel who were directly involved in the tests were taken into account. Ultimately, the latest version of PM differed from the first both internally and externally. But all the changes were positive and only improved the weapons. This confirms the use of weapons in the army and law enforcement forces. Reliability and simplicity are the principles adhered to by the designers involved in the development. The PM pistol (photo) can be seen below.

Solution

At the end of the 1980s, as already mentioned, PM became obsolete. What was needed was a pistol that was equally unpretentious and simple, but had great shooting performance. Therefore, work began on the “Rook” competition. But the creation of new weapons was possible only after a while. The replacement was the PMM (modernized Makarov pistol). In general, it was the same weapon, only chambered for the 9x18 PMM cartridge, which had a stronger powder charge and a lighter bullet with a steel core. However, minor changes were still made, namely the shape of the bolt-casing and the magazine capacity were simplified. In general, the shortcomings of PM have been corrected to some extent. The combat qualities of the temporary model exceeded those of its predecessor, but were inferior to the new Western models.

PM won the competition. However, due to lack of funds, it is not produced even today. But the PMM has not received enough use to allow us to talk about a complete or almost complete replacement. Thus, the same Makarov pistol is now used, despite all its shortcomings, it is one of the best types of service weapons. Compact and easy to use PM is still popular today.

Negative sides

Like any weapon, the PM was imperfect. In the process of using it, shortcomings were identified. For example, some of the most obvious are the small stopping effect of the bullet, the small magazine capacity and the narrow handle, which did not allow a full palm to contact the pistol. It is precisely because of the last disadvantage that those who do not have experience in handling small arms and PMs in particular show poor results. The PM grip takes some getting used to. This applies to all PM-shaped models and the air pistol in particular.

The manually operated safety lever, although it has a fairly convenient position, nevertheless became obsolete in the 80s. It is also worth noting that when the bluing is erased (subject to side light), a reflection appears on the front sight, which can easily be mistaken for the absence of part of it. This leads to poor shooting, since the bullets land not on the center, but on the side. But, taking into account all the disadvantages, of which there were many, PM became popular precisely because of its simplicity and functionality. It is also necessary to take into account that in real combat conditions personal weapons were practically not used; they were not significant and decisive. Therefore, all the shortcomings described above were not even noticed in most cases.

As the soldiers said, even when the pistol and palms were dirty, and there was no cleaning for quite a long time, the PM saved the lives of the soldiers, and a foreign pistol would misfire. Of course, the unpretentiousness of the weapon should not be overestimated, but if it did not work, then, most likely, this was due to careless handling of it.

Reliability in use

But what is the reason for the popularity? Undoubtedly, one of the distinctive qualities of such a weapon as the Makarov pistol (PM) is its reliability. It was proven not only in numerous tests carried out during creation and improvement, but also on the battlefield. Real combat operations in which the Makarov pistol (PM) participated took place in Afghanistan and Chechnya. In many other countries where there have been and are ongoing small skirmishes and local wars, weapons also perform well. In self-defense, an air pistol is simply irreplaceable.

Which of the cooled PMs is more preferable?

35 is a good budget, you can find something worthwhile.

Take the forged 411 and the prices for it are rising, the rest is for masturbation, I’m like “shot” for 500 for sure, no matter what)

411, exactly! only him!) The most generous deactivator.

Another quite important point, is it for rework or just to scare the squirrels?

The presence of rifling is most pleasing.

PTK-RPZ

Another quite important point, is it for rework or just to scare the squirrels?

Look for PM-O. They will no longer be released.

Tell me, what kind of SHP PM are made from new/warehouse PM?

hm-oh there’s more fun consumables there

This. It’s better no, it never was and maybe there won’t be any more https://guns.allzip.org/topic/356/2498874.html

Let me ask a simpler question, which is made better and more reliably, in general, I choose from R-411 and PM-SO?

countryman2

if the historical component is not important, then I would take the P-M18X from UMK. A very nice example in terms of fitting of parts and operation of the automation.

Thank you. Of these two models, which is preferable? I look at several stores for discounts on them, or is it not important?

if the historical component is not important, then I would take the P-M18X from UMK. A very nice example in terms of fitting of parts and operation of the automation.

I completely agree. If for shooting, then the P-M18X is the best option, it is made quite well, and its operation is more reliable.

Signal

The last type of PM-shaped remains. In addition to traumatic, pneumatic and gas, the PM signal pistol, namely the MP-371 model, is popular. It is completely safe to use. The shot occurs due to the explosion of capsules, of which there are 8 pieces in the magazine, this is accompanied by a characteristic sound. They imitate cartridges, but are not actual cartridges. The caliber of the model is 9 mm, weight is 730 g. But where can you use a signal pistol? For example, for special effects or to attract attention. It is also often used to scare away wild animals, but this is where the fighting qualities end.

The PM pistol is a popular weapon all over the world. In addition to combat, other types are widely used. The Makarov pneumatic pistol (PM) has many advantages, the main ones being reliability and unpretentiousness. They are also observed in other PM-shaped models. Ease of use, which not all types of small arms have, is also attractive. However, there are also disadvantages that do not allow the PM to be used effectively in combat conditions. Nevertheless, the PM pistol is indispensable in law enforcement and self-defense. Its characteristics are high.

KWC KM-44DHN

The model is less reminiscent of the original Makarov pistol than others. High-quality assembly is combined with negative aspects in the design, namely, with the connection of the case with screws. The trigger mechanism is not a strong point. However, in terms of combat performance, the model is better than others. The initial speed of the bullet is 130 m/s, the magazine is full-size. But due to the wrong descent, there is a possibility of developing a habit. It will be extremely difficult to switch to another model. But many people choose it.
