The popularity of traumatic weapons in Russia has a historical beginning. In the 90s, the crime situation acutely raised the question of the need for effective self-defense. After traumatic weapons appeared on the arms market, some manufacturers, including manufacturers of military weapons, became involved in this activity.
Traumatic weapons, now defined as firearms of limited destruction, are intended for self-defense and the protection of loved ones within the framework of Russian legislation.
The destructive element is rubber bullets made in the form of balls. Some trauma models are designed to use noise or light cartridges. Thus, the purpose of the OOOP is not only to inflict non-lethal damage on the enemy, but also to frighten him. If you use light cartridges, you can use the injury as a signal weapon.
The creation of traumatic weapons based on combat models is a tactical move by the developers.
- Firstly, it was aimed at reducing production costs, since a huge number of barrels removed from service remained in warehouses.
- Secondly, just the appearance of a firearm, outwardly similar to a combat weapon, could reconcile the enemy and prevent the shot as such.
However, already with the beginning of the appearance of traumatic weapons based on the Makarov pistol, it was accompanied by a sharp increase in demand.
From the history of creation
The Makarov traumatic pistol was simultaneously developed by engineers of two concerns: PKP AKBS LLC and Degtyarev Plant OJSC (ZID). The developers were tasked with making not only a functional traumatic weapon, but also keeping its characteristics within the limits established by law. According to the idea of the project, the injury should be made from a combat sample, and to preserve the historical value, alterations were kept to a minimum.
The first copy appeared on the market with the index “PI-T”. Almost immediately, a real stir began among weapon lovers; it consisted in the fact that citizens could legally purchase an almost combat-ready model. The PM-T model differed from its prototype only in the manufacture of the barrel. Instead of a rifled one, a smooth channel was used, in which a special pin was installed in the chamber area. This pin acts as a limiter to ensure that live projectiles cannot be fired.
The rubber ball, being deformed, passes the obstacle without any problems. Due to the fact that the pin is installed near the chamber itself, the bullet normalizes its trajectory in the barrel, which allows for targeted shooting. Another protection is also provided - weakening grooves. The fundamental difference between the PM-T and the combat Makarov is the cartridges used. In the first case, 9PA cartridges are suitable, and in the second - 9x18 mm.
Not only ordinary citizens, but also collectors were “rejoiced” at the appearance of copies of Makarov on sale. The reason for this was the fact of the use and subsequent alteration of real combat barrels that were lying in storage. These are models from the 50s - 80s. Combat models are valued for their high quality weapon steel. It’s not hard to imagine how advantageous modifications look compared to weapons made from scratch.
One way or another, a traumatic pistol appeared on the market, which even in bluing did not differ from its combat “comrade”. A barely noticeable difference appeared in the form of a “T” stamped on the right side of the frame. Naturally, we should not forget about the smaller barrel diameter. It is noteworthy that the PM-T found its buyer even before the start of mass production. Gun lovers became interested in the model immediately after the release of a corresponding article in one of the gun magazines.
The history of the appearance of the PM-T pistol on the market has a very interesting fact. The fact is that some time before the changes to the weapons law came into force, it became known that modifications would be prohibited. That is, starting from July 1, 2011, the manufacturer is obliged to stop producing trauma models converted from combat barrels. In the time remaining before the law came into force, about 5 thousand pistols were manufactured.
Those wishing to purchase an injury literally spent the night in long lines. It is not surprising that today, for the latest samples released before the amendment to the law, they are asking for an amount many times higher than their cost.
Traumatic pistol MP-79-9TM 9 mm P.A.
Traumatic pistol MP-79-9TM 9 mm P.A. Pistol MP-79-9TM
is produced by the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant and differs from the previous model Izh-79-9T by having smaller protrusions, which, according to the plant, makes it possible to get an output of 91 J when firing 50 J cartridges.
MP 79 9tm firing characteristics: The operation of the MP 79 9tm automatic weapon is based on the principle of blowback. The automatic cycle includes extraction and deflection of the cartridge case after the shot, cocking of the trigger mechanism and chambering of the next cartridge from the magazine into the chamber. Since the energy developed by blank and gas cartridges is significantly less than the energy developed by a cartridge with a rubber bullet, this Makarov 9 mm traumatic pistol
, operates in automatic reloading mode only on a cartridge with a rubber bullet. When firing gas and blank cartridges to reload the MP 79 9 Tm pistol, after each shot you must manually move the bolt to the rearmost position, after which the bolt, under the action of the return spring, sends the cartridge into the chamber. Due to the presence of a trigger-type self-cocking trigger mechanism in the Makarych traumatum, it is possible to open fire without first cocking the hammer. After all the cartridges from the magazine have been used up, the bolt of the MP 79 9 Tm pistol becomes locked and remains in the rear position. Safety of handling is ensured by a reliably functioning fuse. The Makarych pistol has a safety lever located on the left side of the bolt. When the fuse is moved to the safety position (the red dot on the slide is covered by the fuse), the hammer is released from cocking and the hammer is simultaneously intercepted by the locking protrusion of the safety. In this position, it is impossible for the trigger to strike the firing pin and pull the bolt back. The shutter is blocked.
The traumatic Makarych MP 79 9 tm is a durable and reliable pistol, it is simple and inexpensive to maintain. Many owners praise the Makarych Trauma for its compactness and power. This is an inexpensive traumatic pistol assembled on the basis of the PM; it will appeal to both beginners and experienced weapon lovers.

Design of the PM-T pistol
The pistol is reloaded automatically. For this, the recoil energy of the free shutter is used. The mechanical part of the bolt, including the return spring, is completely preserved from the combat model. During the conversion, we came across used pistols. In them, worn parts were replaced with new ones. It is necessary to understand that the service life of traumatic weapons has increased, since the recoil impulse of a 9PA caliber cartridge is significantly less than 9x18. Subsequently, it turned out that the borrowed spring was too “powerful,” which often led to problems in chambering the cartridge. The designers decided to install a spring from the MP-654K pneumatics on models made from scratch.
The first pistols released after 2011 had many problems with the barrel. The cartridge was constantly jammed during reloading. But after a few months, through the efforts of the AKBS company, all the shortcomings were corrected. Some of the barrels from the original batch are still ignored by amateurs and are poorly purchased on the secondary market. The modification practically consisted of additional polishing of the barrel bore.
The trigger of the model under consideration is defined as a double-action trigger type. If you fire with pre-cocking, then a force of 2 kg must be transferred to the trigger. When firing with automatic reloading, the force doubles. In models produced after 1955, the hook stroke has some features that are manifested by a short but smooth stroke.
The fuse that blocks the firing pin is located on the left side of the bolt frame. To remove the pistol from the safety, you need to move the flag to the lower position, which is done naturally when holding the weapon in your right hand. The aiming device is adjustable. The front sight is its fixed part, and the rear sight moves horizontally. Since the law defines restrictions on the number of cartridges in the chamber, they did not increase the existing indicator, since it fully satisfies the requirements. The PM-T magazine contains 8 rounds.
Some owners note, as a minus of the device, the presence of a spring latch at the bottom that secures the magazine. They are based on the fact that it is inconvenient to operate with gloves. But, according to the rest of the owners, such a latch reliably keeps the clip from falling out.
The delivery package does not include an additional magazine. If you wish, you can buy it yourself. Unlike barrels, there are no problems with the supply of spare parts, and the cost for them is quite affordable.
Disadvantages of the IZH-79-9T "Makarych" pistol
One of the most serious disadvantages of this traumatic weapon is its power. The IZH-79-9T will fire out its entire magazine, although quite densely, but not powerfully enough.
Another serious drawback of the model is the same design inherited from the “good old PM”. Of course, compactness is good, but the controversial ergonomics of the 2004 pistol, created on the basis of the 1948 model, are a controversial factor in its reputation.
As stated above, IZH-79-9T is the first model in the IZH-79-9 family, which completely excludes the possibility of using high-power ammunition on it. The pistol is designed mainly for cartridges with a power of 35-50 J - which, of course, is not much. However, the magazine with a capacity of 8 rounds makes it possible to use the weapon for active self-defense.
It should also be noted that the pistol's sighting devices are imperfect, as well as a number of design flaws, the most significant of which is the design of the barrel, which sometimes causes rubber bullets to get stuck when firing. Another minor, but no less important, drawback of the pistol is the low quality of manufacturing parts - which is not surprising given the almost complete absence of a unified quality control system.
Specifications
The PM-T traumatic pistol, first of all, must be considered as an effective weapon. He has earned public recognition not only for his famous “roots”. Performance characteristics for traumatic pistols are largely limited by law. Thus, the maximum permissible muzzle energy should not exceed 91 J, and the number of cartridges in the clip should not exceed 10. Manufacturers are forced to comply with these criteria, otherwise their products will not be legalized by any license.
Technical characteristics include not only indicators in numerical terms. For example, the material used is of great importance. In the case of the PM-T, the bolt, magazine, frame, and trigger are made of weapon-grade steel. A special method of processing parts of the trigger mechanism ensures the smooth operation for which Makarov is famous.
With a pistol length of 170 mm, the barrel length is 93 mm. In this case, the mass of the weapon in the unloaded state is 730 g. The caliber of the cartridges, as already noted, is 9mm. Aimed fire can be conducted at a distance of up to 7 m. As the distance increases, significant deviations in the trajectory of the bullet occur.
Analyzing the impact characteristics, the manufacturer determined the most effective distance for hitting a living target, it was 3.5 meters. If the force on the trigger is measured in units of force, then it is 35 and 70 N for cocked and self-cocking, respectively. Manufacturers indicate the operating life of the device, which corresponds to 5,000 shots.
Advantages of the pistol IZH-79-9T “Makarych”
One of the main advantages of the IZH-79-9T pistol is, as mentioned earlier, the material from which it is made. Steel provides the gun with greater strength and reliability, as well as high wear resistance of its parts.
Another advantage is its ease of maintenance and use. There is no point in proving that only good weapons have such features.
Another strong point of the IZH-79-9T pistol is its convenience and familiarity in handling. Made on the basis of the Makarov pistol, which is in service with the Russian Armed Forces and law enforcement agencies, it will, of course, be familiar to everyone who has dealt with the Makarov. This means that disassembling and assembling a pistol is a common thing for the vast majority of them.
The similar design to the Makarov pistol leads to another, no less important advantage: the IZH-79-9T is very compact and lightweight. The length of the pistol is 161 mm, while the width and height are 30.5 and 126.5 mm, respectively. The barrel length of the IZH-79-9T is 93 mm. Without cartridges, the Makarych pistol weighs 630 grams, and loaded - about 700.
As already mentioned, the availability of parts and spare parts (for example, a magazine or a pistol grip) makes the IZH-79-9T pistol practically “indestructible” and easy to repair. Another advantage of the pistol is its very good potential for tuning. This helps correct the pistol's shortcomings, which will be discussed below.
Pros and cons of the model
The PM-T pistol inherited absolutely everything from the combat version, including pros and cons. It should be noted that advantages and disadvantages are not objective characteristics. They can be identified from reviews of real owners.
The first thing that users note as a negative side is the fairly large force on the trigger. With such indicators, trauma does not provide the desired accuracy. An untrained shooter will constantly have problems with this.
The not entirely comfortable position of the handle is also emphasized. This fact is especially noticeable to those who have previously used more ergonomic models. From a technical point of view, there are no complaints about the pistol, with the exception of a limited batch in which jamming of the cartridges was observed. After some minor modifications, the barrel was modernized and the problem was solved. As participants in weapons forums note, you get used to the pistol fairly quickly, and shortcomings in ergonomics are compensated for by shooting efficiency.
As for the advantages of the Makarov, first of all, its high degree of reliability should be noted. The gun has proven itself in the most difficult working conditions. The combat version of the pistol was used in armed conflicts and was in service with all former republics of the USSR. Trauma inherited simplicity and at the same time durability. If there were no restrictions on muzzle energy, then the design would be quite suitable for the use of more powerful cartridges. You can list all the advantages of PM-T:
- reliability with the declared resource;
- possibility of inexpensive maintenance;
- ease of use;
- possibility of concealed carrying;
- long distance for aimed shooting;
- steel as a manufacturing material.
Buying a pistol
Today you can buy traumatic or pneumatic weapons that are similar in appearance and even in design to the legendary Makarov pistol. But these models have a completely different index and, accordingly, a different manufacturer. As for the PM-T model, its production ended in 2011. After the publication of changes in the law on weapons, the manufacturer reclassified production as a traumatic weapon made “from scratch.” Naturally, such new devices did not find that overwhelming demand.
You can buy PM-T on the secondary market, but its price has increased several times. If the initial cost varied between 15-20 thousand rubles, then for used models owners ask from 40 to 60 thousand. It must be recalled that the circulation of traumatic weapons is under state control. This means that any transaction with a private person will have to be processed through OLRR. Otherwise, the buyer will not have documents to register the weapon, and without registration and a storage license, the law determines a fairly severe punishment.
