MP-155: features and technical characteristics of a modern hunting rifle

Among hunting rifles, many still prefer Soviet assemblies and models. This choice is explained not only by their quality and convenience, but also by the lack of acceptable alternatives. In this context, a new model of a repeating rifle for hunting was developed.

MR-155 "Rusich" - developed by the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant, produced along with modifications of the IZH-27. Created with an emphasis on shooting bullets, focused on ease of use and competitiveness with modern models of hunting weapons.

The MP 155 multi-shot single-barreled shotgun is used for bird hunting; it can also be used against wild boar or elk. Technical characteristics and balancing allow its use as a sporting weapon.

History of creation

Shotgun MP-155
The development of new hunting weapons was actively developed at the turn of the millennium. In 2000, the MP-153, which received the unofficial name “Murka,” was launched into production. The weapon was made self-loading, the principle of operation was based on the removal of powder gases.

In 2011, based on this model, a modernized version of the MP 155 Rusich was developed. The new model took into account the shortcomings of its predecessor and increased the competitiveness of the weapon in comparison with modern analogues.

Compared to the previous MP-153, the new gun has the following differences:

  • Weight has been reduced and weapon balancing has been improved;
  • the length of the receiver has been reduced;
  • reduced recoil due to the shock-absorbing butt plate;
  • replaceable inserts between the butt and receiver allow adjustment of the lowering of the butt comb;
  • The trigger travel has been reduced and the safety button has been enlarged.

These aspects have improved the ergonomics and practicality of using the weapon. There is also a modification for left-handers. It is allowed to install a bar with a dovetail mount and subsequently equip the weapon with optical instruments.

There is a cut-off mechanism that allows you to stop the supply of cartridges from the magazine and manually load the gun with the required ammunition. It is possible to install an additional barrel without having to go to a locksmith workshop.

How is MP-155 better than the previous model?

Italian designers took part in the creation of a new version of the famous gun, producing several original parts for the MP-155 Rusich. By the way: according to reviews, the MP-155 Rusich, which has a plastic body, is in greatest demand among amateurs and hunters.

More precisely, the new version of this weapon differs from the previous version in the following details and points:

  • The weight of the MP-155 Rusich is less than the MP-153. The MP-155 has a new, lighter gas release mechanism, as well as a lighter sight rail. By the way, it was thanks to the sighting bar that the balancing of the gun became significantly better;
  • The designers reduced the size of the gun's receiver, making it possible to fire more powerful charges (12x76 cartridges);
  • The ergonomics of the new gun have been significantly improved, thanks to the ability to reduce the butt drop. This is done using special plastic inserts;
  • The butt pad-shock absorber of the MP-155 Rusich shotgun has also been improved, thanks to which the recoil after firing a shot is significantly dampened;
  • The designers also enlarged the safety button. The trigger stroke, on the contrary, has become less than it was before;
  • Special double-sided equipment was installed on the MP-155, making it convenient for left-handed people to use;
  • The gun is equipped with special mechanisms with which you can install optics, as well as a collimator sight;
  • The MP-155 Rusich is equipped with a special system, through which a limited supply of charges from the magazine has become possible, making it possible to reload the weapon with cartridges of other calibers and other powers;
  • The MP-155 magazine, thanks to the design solution, can be extended.

According to user reviews, the annoying minus of the MP-155 shotgun is the protruding fore-end, which can cause some inconvenience when using the weapon.

Design information

Collapsible design of MP-155
The design of MP-155 is focused on practicality and ergonomics. The number of parts involved has been reduced, while the quality of the weapon has been maintained. The stock of the gun is pistol, the handle is flat, the comb of the butt is straight.

The operating principle of the gun is based on a gas engine. Part of the powder gases after the shot generates energy for reloading. When the cut-off mechanism is engaged, the gun will fire single shots. Otherwise, the cartridges will be fired from the magazine, which allows semi-automatic fire.

Trunk

The MP-155 barrel is cold forged, has a chrome-plated bore and chamber. The muzzle has a thread for installing various types of choke constrictions. The receiver is made of aluminum alloy. The cartridge ejector is located on the right or left, depending on the modification.

USM

The trigger mechanism is equipped with a cartridge interception function. The cut-off lever allows you to load the gun with a cartridge different from the ammunition in the magazine. The bolt has a tooth that clings to the barrel shank when it is locked. The larval mirror has no edges.

The gas engine of the gun is located on a tubular under-barrel magazine. Adjustment is made by a spring-loaded piston valve. Gases are removed through the fore-end cavity. The return spring is mounted together with the motor, which allows you to adjust the position of the stock.

Fuse

The safety is located at the rear of the trigger guard, the button has a triangular shape. To shoot, press it from right to left, after which a red mark appears. In this case, only the descent is blocked, the trigger remains cocked.

Sighting device

The sighting device of the MP-155 is of an open type, represented by a ventilated arched bar and a front sight made of fiber-optic thread. Additionally, a rear sight is installed. If necessary, the gun is equipped with optical sights after installing the appropriate strap.

Some design features of the MP-155 shotgun

Compared to the previous version - the MP-153 gun, some changes and improvements were added to the new modification of the weapon:

  • The receiver of the new gun is made of B95 aluminum. Such aluminum is mostly used in aviation, and other, similar metals are usually used to make most hunting rifles;
  • The axles were removed from the cartridge case extractor, making it possible to easily remove cartridges with swollen cartridges;
  • The new gun is equipped with a cut-off mechanism when feeding charges, making reloading more advanced and versatile. For example, if a gun is loaded with some cartridges, but there is a need to fire charges of a different power, then using such a mechanism you can manually reload another type of ammunition. Such additional charging can be done through the ejector window. In this case, the MP-155 bolt must be moved to the rearmost position, and a charge must be sent into the chamber using the bolt;
  • The stock for the MP-155, as partly discussed above, is an original design solution for hunting rifles. The stock can be adjusted vertically and horizontally. Typically, when purchasing a gun, there is an insert between the receiver and the butt that holds the release in the right position. Using the insert you can easily make a bend to the left; in this case, left-handed people will be able to use the weapon;
  • The gun also includes 2 butt pads of different lengths;
  • The forend of the gun has a cone-shaped design (narrowed closer to the muzzle and widened at the rear).

According to the designers, the current version of the gun is not final. Work is currently underway to further improve it. In particular, it is planned to add a pistol grip to the gun, as well as a stock that could be folded. These improvements were made thanks to user feedback. Such reviews indicate that since the recoil of the gun is greater than that of a machine gun, for this reason the existing handle does not allow comfortable shooting.

In addition, now the designers are thinking about creating a sports modification of the MP-155. According to the design assurances, this version will have many original improvements.

Specifications

The use of modern plastics makes it possible to significantly reduce the weight of the weapon.
Technical characteristics of the MP-155 have the following values:

  • type of weapon - self-loading gun based on a gas engine;
  • the barrel is smooth, there is a chrome-plated bore and chamber;
  • calibers - 12 mm;
  • chamber length - 76 and 89 mm;
  • barrel diameter at the breech - 18.4 mm;
  • the barrel length has several variations - 610, 660, 710 and 750 mm;
  • The magazine capacity is 4 and 3 rounds with a chamber of 76 and 89 mm, respectively;
  • the permissible limit for increasing the magazine capacity is 9 and 8 rounds;
  • the weight of a gun with a barrel length of 710 mm is 3.1 kg.

20mm shotgun options are available. These have certain differences in performance characteristics in size and configuration. The diameter of the barrel at the breech has been reduced to 15.7 mm. Barrel length is 610, 660 and 710 mm, weight at maximum is 2.8 kg. The magazine capacity is designed for 4 rounds; there is no possibility of increasing it.

Tips for beginners to use

The MP-155 shotgun is sold in a cardboard box with a separated barrel. Depending on the order, an additional receiver unit may be provided.

The kit includes interchangeable types of choke constrictions - cylinder, choke and semi-choke. There is also a key for installing them and tensioning the gas piston spring. To adjust the position of the butt, special pads are provided. The gun must be accompanied by an instruction manual for the MP-155 and a passport.

Before purchasing a gun, it is recommended to check all its components. Build quality is not always maintained at a good level. Whenever possible, weapons are tested in practice, but the store does not always have a shooting range.

After purchase, after reading the instructions, disassemble the weapon. For a beginner, this is a good option to get acquainted with the MP-155 device. Disassembly is also necessary to clean the mechanisms from contaminants that sellers do not pay attention to. For the first cleaning, use kerosene. After this, all fasteners and pins are checked.

I came across an interesting article about this gun wash. Author Walter Wolf - regularly publishes on the topic of weapons in the Ukrainian newspaper "Polyuvannya and Fishing". I think gun lovers will find it interesting.

IZH-58. Originally from Budapest Since 1958, the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant, together with IZH-26 (produced until 1975), began to produce a new model of a hammerless horizontal gun called IZH-58. As I wrote earlier, Izhevsk craftsmen repeatedly copied other people’s models, such as Sauer model VIII (IZH-49). That's what happened this time too. Most likely, after the bloody events in Budapest, a rather interesting model of a gun came into the field of view of Izhevsk designers, which became the progenitor of the IZH-58. Many gun experts will call it the Frommer model. I can’t say with certainty that this model is from Frommer’s factories. What I was able to see on one such gun myself (since all the marks and inscriptions were erased with sandpaper to oxidize with rusty varnish) was the inscription “Budapest”. Having simplified and somewhat modified this Budapest model, they created the IZH-58. What kind of gun model was it? The Budapest model is a double-barreled shotgun with horizontally paired barrels of 12 or 16 gauge. Only with a more angular and rough block, triple locking, and with a trigger mechanism completely similar to the IZH-58. There was no engraving on it at all, but the trigger was somewhat more complicated, stuffed with small parts and details. But the main thing that interested me in this model was not the reliable ejector mechanism, but the triple locking. It is triple and reliable, not what was done on the IZH-58. The locking was practically the same as on the IZH-57 or IZH-26 - with a Perde frame, two under-barrel hooks and an upper one, with a small hook of the breech coupling of the barrels. Many may argue that this is almost the same as in the IZH-58. But that's not true. The top locking was done somewhat differently and more firmly. The fact is that the upper key around the circumference, where it fits on the square, had a very large flange, and in the block above the strikers there was a through groove. When the key was placed on the square of the axis, its flange fit into the slot of the block at the top and reliably pushed in the small hook of the barrels. If the gun ruptured, it was impossible to tear off the key, since it went in the groove of the block and only in one place had a slot for unlocking the gun. However, Izhevsk designers did not take this important component into account and did everything their own way. You will find out how further. And so, IZH-58. This is a double-barreled hammerless shotgun of 16, 20, 28 caliber. Quite simple in design and light in weight. Most often 2.8-2.9 kg. The barrels are located in a horizontal plane, the barrels are triple locked. Although in fact the third locking point cannot be called full-fledged locking. But more on that below. Locking was carried out using two under-barrel hooks and a small hook. The impact mechanism is mounted in the block, the trigger mechanism is on the cylinder. The triggers are internal, returnable. The firing pins are fixed in the hammers. The hammers are cocked by the cockers when the gun is opened. The gun had an automatic safety, which could easily be made non-automatic if desired. The fuse even locked the sear. Moreover, in the first models the safety button in the rear was noticeably cut down. A smooth descent is possible. The forend with a lever-type latch on the first models was narrow, like on the IZH-54. Subsequent samples are already of the “beaver tail” type. The stock is straight or semi-pistol-shaped. Stock material: birch, beech. Walnut was never installed. The main visual difference between the first model and subsequent ones is the semicircle stretched in the middle at the junction of the metal and the wood. On subsequent models (since 1975), the semicircle was even. There were no cocking indicators. And in general, the model was very simple, with a small number of parts, and when fired with normal charges, it could serve for a very long time. Not long ago I came across models of the first releases in generally excellent condition. True, the placement of the birch stock spoiled the whole thing. The fact is that birch as a stock material is completely unsuitable for stocks. On army carbines it was at least impregnated with the appropriate compounds, making it resistant to moisture. On the IZH-58, the stock was only coated with varnish, which was quickly wiped off. As a result, the stock became wet from moisture and oil and, swelling, protruded inside the mechanism, preventing the triggers from being cocked. However, I practically never encountered any breaking of the strikers on the IZH-58, as well as shrinkage of the mainsprings. In 1975, a new model IZH-58MA appeared, and later the MAE. With the advent of the IZH-58MA model, it seemed that the low-income hunter had nothing more to desire. The price is right, the gun has a good action, and the design with the pistol stock and wide fore-end is top notch. But Izhevsk craftsmen wanted to equip the IZH-58 MA with ejectors as well. It was these ejectors that gave the hunters a good game. The fact is that the ejectors were spring-loaded by one common pusher rod, with a spiral spring attached to it. One rod, with its small cross-section, was supposed to simultaneously push out both ejectors. But in practice this did not work out. In the event of the slightest jamming of one ejector (when the sleeve was inflated), the pusher rod automatically jumped to the second one and squeezed it out. And pick out the jammed one with your teeth. I often had to refine this flaw. I had to equip the front part of the rod with a flange and deepen the entry of the central part of the rod in the ejector. It seemed that all the bad things were behind us. But the removal of cartridges from the chambers was minimal - the mechanism in the forend of the gun was in the way. Many owners complained about the small extension, since it was inconvenient to remove the cartridges in the cold or in a hurry. We had to remove the parts of the ejector mechanism from the forend, giving it to the owners of the gun, who didn’t really want to take it. They were quite satisfied with the work of the ejectors as a simple extractor. At the same time, the cartridges moved out noticeably more and even with gloves on they could be removed without difficulty. But that was not all. As is known, handguards were often lost on the IZH-58MA-MAE. Due to weak leaf spring latch. In some cases it was possible to simply rivet it. In others, already overheat. One good thing is that the handguards are interchangeable. True, in the MA - MAE model, you need to remove the stop lever from the block, which is located above the axial bolt. As I already said, the IZH-58 could not tolerate strong charges. I have seen a lot of guns in which the barrel tubes came out of the breech coupling. There were even more turned under-barrel hooks, when on the left side the gap between the breech coupling and the block was more than a few mm, and on the right side the breech coupling rubbed against the block shield, even to the point of shavings. This, of course, is not the fault of the gun, but the fault of the hunters with their gunpowder measurements and completely wild charges. It is interesting to note that on some models of the first releases the sighting bars were “overlay”. They, as in IZH-57, found 5-6 mm on the barrel tubes. Moreover, this did not spoil the appearance of the gun, but rather gave the effect of old guns. Unfortunately, very few such models have survived today. The main flaw in the gun system is its top locking. What is called the top hook is actually fake. Its problem is that it is incorrectly manufactured and most of it is wasted in the vertical cutout of the block, and the working (locking) area is extremely small - about 3 mm. And the top key serves as the locking bar. And he himself “hangs in the air”, planted on a square and screwed on top with a 4 mm screw. This is not the Budapest model, where the locking key has a thick flange and rotates in the groove of the block. And the small hook of the breech coupling is similar to IZH-26. Why am I emphasizing this? Because the IZH-58 is not designed for strong charges, I’m not even talking about the Magnum. And here, on its basis, since 1986, the IZH-43 model has appeared. This is practically the same IZH-58, only it has no top locking at all. Of course, the first models of IZH-43 were very good. The assembly was good. But after just a few batches, the strips between the breech coupling and the forend latch hook disappeared, the barrel tubes began to shine with non-oxidized surfaces, and for some reason the butt necks became square. Everything went towards cheaper.V. Wolf From the administrator:

Gun prevention and cleaning

In addition to standard variations, the MP-155 is also made to order with decorative inserts.
Prevention is an important part of maintaining any weapon. To maintain its fighting qualities, it is necessary to regularly clean and lubricate its mechanisms. This is done at least every two to three months, always before hunting and after shooting.

To disassemble the MP-155 shotgun, perform the following steps:

  • jerk the bolt frame several times to make sure there is no cartridge;
  • unscrew the nut on the front end of the magazine, remove the forend;
  • remove the barrel from mating with the receiver;
  • resting the butt on the floor and holding the gun by the gas piston, move the bolt frame back, and then remove its handle;
  • smoothly release the gas piston to straighten the return spring;
  • remove the gas piston with the bolt frame, cylinder and spring, disassemble this mechanism;
  • Having knocked out the fastenings of the trigger mechanism, remove it from the receiver.

All components are thoroughly cleaned with linen rags or other soft fabrics. For cleaning, do not use harsh materials that can damage weapon components. Apply the lubricant in a thin layer, avoiding smudges.

Advantages and disadvantages

The advantages of MP-155 shotguns include the following aspects:

  • reliability and ease of use and maintenance;
  • gas engine settings allow a wide choice of cartridges used;
  • the barrel allows firing with lead and steel shot and can be equipped with barrel constrictions;
  • The safety and bolt stop buttons have been enlarged and a cut-off mechanism has appeared;
  • reduction in the weight of the weapon due to a shortened receiver made of aluminum alloy;
  • the possibility of tuning weapons - the use of optical sights, butt adjustment, other aspects;
  • The ergonomics of the stock and handle have been improved, the stock is adjustable, and the butt plate better absorbs recoil.

There were also a number of shortcomings. The handguard has been reduced in size compared to the MP-153, but now it fits onto the receiver. This creates a risk of it getting caught on a branch when preparing to shoot.

There is also a limited selection of calibers. Only 12 and 20 mm available. Many hunters consider the sixteenth gauge to be more versatile, but it is not used with these models of shotguns.

In general, the MP-155 has become lighter and more practical than its predecessor, which made this gun competitive compared to its Western counterparts. However, in some cases it is worth paying attention to the build quality - it does not always meet the stated standards.
