The Remington 11-87 smooth-bore semi-automatic shotgun, developed by the American company Remington Arms, is intended for hunting and sport shooting on stands. This development demonstrates the outstanding quality and reliability of Remington brand weapons. The 11-87 has been producing model for more than 30 years, and it was developed in 1987 based on the iconic Remington 1100 semi-automatic shotgun.
The Remington 11-87 self-loading shotgun is chambered for 12 and 20 gauge cartridges. To meet consumer demand for different tasks, several modifications of the shotgun were developed. There are versions for self-defense, hunting, for police and special services. The Remington 11-87, like the Remington 1100, is still in production, but unlike the 1100, the model is exported worldwide.
Among the modifications we can highlight the Remington 11-87 shotgun for a cartridge case longer than 70 mm for Magnum series cartridges. The weapon looks more aggressive compared to the base model. In combat modifications there are several quick-detachable barrels and equipment for performing special tasks. The smoothbore gun is distinguished by the high reliability of its trigger components, which can withstand up to 500 thousand shots.
The Remington 11-87 semi-automatic turned out to be very successful and immediately won recognition not only in its homeland, but also abroad. To date, more than half a million units of the Remington 11-87 model have been produced, including versions for the police, that is, with a shortened barrel.
In Russia, the Remington model 11-87 smoothbore hunting rifle appeared in the early 2000s and firmly took its place among other semi-automatic hunting rifles.
general description
The creation of the Remington 11-87 model was aimed at producing a gun specifically designed to fire powerful magnum cartridges with a 76 mm sleeve length. Thus, while being structurally similar to the Model 1100 shotgun, the Remington Model 11-87 shotgun provides a greater effective firing range and greater firepower, at the cost of a slight increase in weapon weight and increased recoil.
Shotguns of models 1100 and 11-87 began to be produced in parallel, but only model 11-87 was launched as a combat option.
In addition to combat models, the Remington company catalog includes more than a dozen different hunting variants of this model.
Remington Model 11-87 Police/Tactical shotguns are widely used by various police departments in the United States and are exported.
The Remington 11-87 self-loading shotgun is equipped with a mechanism for removing powder gases. The shotgun magazine is located under the barrel and is loaded through the lower receiver window. The magazine capacity is 5 rounds, the use of an extension allows you to increase their number to 7.
You can use different types of cartridges, both lightweight 12/70 Magnum cartridges and reinforced 12/76 cartridges. In combat modifications, Supermagnum category cartridges with a case length of 89 mm are used. Powerful cartridges significantly improve the efficiency of a shot, but at the same time increase the recoil force and the load on the trigger.
The gun has a wooden or plastic stock, with a separate fore-end and butt, in which the return spring is hidden. The buttstock handle is pistol or semi-pistol. Remington barrels are removable and interchangeable.
The shotgun is also equipped with various mounts for installing additional equipment, which is usually included in the package. The model can be used as a weapon for clay pigeon shooting, hunting, and self-defense.

The Remington 11-87 shotgun is a self-loading shotgun with a gas release mechanism. The gas chamber is located under the barrel, around the magazine tube. The gas piston is ring-shaped and connected to the valve by two rods. Locking is carried out by a combat cylinder swinging in a vertical plane, installed in the upper part of the bolt, engaging it with the barrel shank. Thus, the receiver is unloaded and can be made of aluminum alloys. The barrels are interchangeable, as a rule, police models are equipped with barrels 20 or 18 inches long; especially for operations in tight spaces, a version with a barrel 14 inches (355 mm) long called the “Police entry gun” is produced. The magazine is tubular, under-barrel, loaded with one cartridge at a time through a window in the bottom of the receiver. The standard magazine capacity is 5 rounds, it can be increased to 7 rounds by installing a magazine extension on the front of the magazine. The gun mechanism includes a bolt stop that stops the bolt in the open position when all the cartridges from the magazine are used up. The return spring is located in the butt, which eliminates the possibility of installing folding stocks. The charging handle is mounted on the right side of the bolt. The safety is a push-button, on the back of the trigger guard, behind the trigger. The gun is usually equipped with a plastic stock, consisting of a separate forend and butt with a semi-pistol or pistol grip. The buttstock is almost always equipped with a rubber shock-absorbing butt plate. Sights usually include a large front sight and a regular rear sight on the barrel or a diopter rear sight with a wide aperture (ghost ring) on the receiver. The gun allows the installation of a wide range of accessories and sighting devices, including tactical flashlights, laser designators, and red dot sights.
Operating principle of Remington 11-87
The operation of a gas engine is simple, based on the partial removal of powder gases after a shot.
As the projectile passes over the gas outlet channel, some of the gases enter the gas outlet ring through two small holes. As a result of the resulting pressure, there is a sharp push of the piston back, the bolt comes out of the hook and the extractor throws out the spent cartridge case. The return spring then feeds the next cartridge into the chamber.
With this design of the system, successful operation occurs regardless of the power of the cartridge. Also, its performance is not affected by operating temperature conditions and the presence of thick lubricant.
The disadvantage of the gas exhaust system is that the working elements are clogged with carbon deposits; the mechanism is under constant influence of powder gases. Soot covers the outer surface of the magazine, the gas outlet ring, the piston, and parts of the trigger.
Because of this, you have to clean a large number of parts after each hunt. Elevated temperatures after firing form a corrosive environment on the surface of parts, in places of scratches and abrasions, which can lead to the appearance of rust.
Design features
The design of the Remington 11-87 self-loading shotgun is the result of painstaking work by ballistics specialists and engineers who were able to create a reliable, well-balanced mechanism.
- Barrels for Remingtons of this modification are not chrome-plated and are made of high-quality steel alloys.
- The receiver is cast, lightweight, made of aluminum. At the bottom of the box there is a recharging window protected by a feed elevator.
- The gas engine consists of a weight slide, three o-rings and a piston.
- The shutter is delayed in the open position after the cartridges leave the magazine. The model has a free shutter, locked by the energy of a spring located inside the butt.
- The right rod of the bolt frame combines the cartridge feed and the function of the delay lever.
- The trigger mechanism of the gun is not adjustable; the safety is a push-button, horizontally offset, located behind the trigger guard.
- Sights depend on the purpose of the gun. With a traditional bronze front sight, a rear sight on the barrel or a diopter rear sight on the receiver can be used.
- The buttstock has a plastic semi-pistol or pistol stock and a rubber butt pad with good shock absorption.
Due to the large number of metal parts, the mechanism is susceptible to corrosion and rust if not properly maintained. Therefore, you should monitor the integrity of the anti-corrosion coating. You should not put the Remington 11-87 semiautomatic rifle in a case after it gets wet, in order to avoid the appearance of corrosion pits in the trigger and the barrel of the gun.
Supplied in a cardboard box. The barrel has been removed. The delivery set includes only a key for interchangeable choke constrictions, the receiver is pre-installed, the rest are suggested to be purchased independently. Instructions and passport included.

Specifications
The Remington 11-87 smoothbore semi-automatic shotgun has a classic appearance: a detachable barrel, fixedly mounted on the base of the receiver, a receiver with a movable bolt frame, a forend with magazines inside and a butt.
Remington's automation is based on the use of the energy of powder gases, that is, after a shot, the gases press on an annular piston, which pushes the bolt using rods. Next, the spring returns the bolt back, which simultaneously sends the next cartridge into the barrel. The gas release mechanism is mounted around the under-barrel magazine and has automatic force adjustment: this means that the gun can fire both regular (70 mm) and reinforced (76 mm) cartridges.
The self-loading Remington model 11-87 is available in 12 and 20 gauges. The barrel length can vary from 360 mm for the police version to 760 mm for the hunting version. The under-barrel magazine can also be different: for 4 rounds and for 8 + one in the barrel.
High-alloy steel is used to make the barrel, then it is chrome-plated. The shutter is made of heat-resistant, lightweight alloy. The bolt frame and receiver are made of aluminum alloy. All this significantly increases the strength of the gun and makes it significantly lighter in comparison with similar semi-automatic hunting rifles.
The handguard and stock are made of durable polymer for regular versions. For the piece and collector's versions, the butt and fore-end are made of expensive wood and polished by hand.

Caliber: The caliber of a smoothbore weapon is determined by the internal diameter of the barrel. For example, a barrel 18 calibers long. The caliber number refers to the number of spherical bullets that can be cast from 1 English pound of lead (453.592 g). Bullets are spherical in shape, identical in mass and diameter, which is equal to the internal diameter of the barrel in its middle part. The smaller the bore, the more bullets can be produced from a pound of lead.

Advantages and disadvantages
Remington's traditional optimal price-quality ratio (the price of model 11-87 varies from 99 to 120 thousand rubles). Remington 11-87 is average in everything - there is something to complain about and something to admire.
- The gun is available in two calibers – 12 and 20, with a 76 mm chamber. This is better than the proposal of Bekas-Auto and Mossberg 930, which are carried out only in the twelfth. However, it is strange that the popular 16-gauge is missing, which is the optimal shot diameter for most types of hunting. A 20-gauge semi-automatic is a very controversial decision, since usually with this barrel diameter they hunt upland and swamp game, which rarely gathers in flocks and the whole process goes very quickly. So much so that even a double shot is rare, and there is no one to shoot with the third cartridge.
- The bolt is free, it is borrowed almost unchanged from the Mossberg 930 self-loading shotgun. Thanks to this, the recoil even when firing reinforced 12-gauge cartridges remains very moderate, it is significantly less than that of the Bekas-Auto, the bolt cylinder of which is hooked with a tooth on the breech shank . However, the sharpness and accuracy of combat in weapons with this type of barrel locking is always a little worse.
Very poor delivery package. In the stock version, a “pay” attachment is screwed into the barrel. The hunter is encouraged to purchase all the rest on his own.
- The bolt handle is small and can be awkward to pull with gloved hands.
- The gun handles all types of cartridges well, including those with reusable brass cartridges. However, he prefers standard or reinforced powder weights.
- The functionality of the Remington 11-87 Sportsman is somewhat inferior to the Bekas-Auto, which has a cartridge catcher that allows you to quickly change the type of cartridge equipment used or not empty the magazine when transporting weapons - during a control check by officials of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, you can open the bolt and not feed the cartridge into the line loading.
- The safety box is located differently than on the Mossberg 930 - on the rear branch of the trigger guard, and not on the butt plate of the receiver. This design solution is quite common for Remington, but hunters do not have a clear opinion that it is more convenient than others.
- The design of the gas engine does not allow increasing the magazine capacity. However, it is made of stainless steel, which makes caring for the weapon much easier.
- The ergonomics of the stock are not satisfactory. This is exactly what the Remington 11-87 can be praised for.
The gun is 12 cm longer than the Bekas-Auto and 150 grams heavier, but in general the weight and dimensions are within the normal range for this type of weapon.

Disassembly
The principle of disassembling the Remington 11-87 is as follows:
- Unload the weapon: open the bolt, make sure the chamber is clean, and the frame is on hold.
- Press the bolt stop lever and return the frame to its original position.
- Unscrew the shaped nut on the front end of the magazine.
- Remove the forend by sliding it towards the muzzle.
- Pull the bolt frame back and put it on hold.
- Remove the barrel from the receiver, simultaneously removing its gas chamber from its interface with the piston mounted on the magazine.
- Remove from the magazine in sequence: the locking split ring, the piston and two obturator rings.
- Return the bolt carrier to its place by pressing the delay lever. Remove the handle from it.
- Turn the receiver with the bottom edge up, press the cartridge elevator with your finger, find the cartridge feeder lever on the inner surface of the receiver (it’s on the left), press and disengage it from the bolt frame rod.
- Remove from the receiver the structure consisting of a pusher-weight (put on the magazine), two rods, a bolt frame and its cylinder.
- Knock out the pins securing the trigger mechanism, remove it as an assembly with the release lever from the bolt stop from the receiver.
- Turn the receiver with the bottom edge up, unhook the two branches of the bolt carrier return pusher (it looks like tweezers) from the return spring pin.
The simple and effective design solution of the Remington 11-87 has proven itself well among experienced hunters. The weapon is smooth-bore, characterized by accuracy, high reliability, and ease of use. Overall, the Remington 11-87 self-loading shotgun is a balanced mechanism that has good accuracy, convenience and reliability, but requires careful maintenance during operation.
As a result of the devaluation of the national currency, Remington 11-87 smoothbore weapons began to cost above average and are inferior in price to models from domestic manufacturers. For the same reason, it has become more difficult to find spare parts for repairing and upgrading guns on the open market.
