Carbine Hammer Vepr 1V VPO 127-02 308Win 520mm

Vepr 12 Molot - modification of VPO 205 01

VPO 205 01 - this sample has a longer barrel of 570 mm, the total overall length has increased, accordingly, to 1117 mm. When the stock is folded, the length is 815 mm, the weight has increased by 100 grams. and amounted to 4.4 kg.

It shoots at light weights without any problems. Recently, the Vepr 12 molot VPO 205 01 was re-equipped: initially the barrel length was 520 mm and there was a non-removable flash suppressor, which did not allow the use of various attachments. But with the advent of a new, longer barrel, it became possible to screw on various extensions and narrowings.

Usage options:

due to the increased length, the sport disappears, only self-defense (you can fold the butt!), recreational shooting remain, and hunting with it has become somewhat more convenient than with the previous model!

"Vepr-1R" VPO-147

AKMoid is a fetish that almost every shooter sooner or later buys (or at least thinks about buying). Therefore, I have no moral right to pass over the topic of “civilian AK” in silence. Moreover, there was a reason - last year the Vepr-1R VPO-147 Vyatsko-Polyansky was presented, which, for a number of reasons, I decided to purchase for a long-term test. Get ready for this carbine to periodically appear in test photographs on this site and www.pro-outdoor.ru.

I have long wanted an AKMoid chambered for an “adult” cartridge – 7.62x51 or 7.62x54R in the Zastava M76 or Valmet M78 style. In the end, pragmatism won – the .308 Win cartridge (7.62x51 mm) is cheap, there is a choice of different equipment, and imported ammunition is available. Thus, the choice came down to “Saiga-308” (price about 23,000 rubles) and “Vepryu” (about 35-39,000 rubles) in a similar caliber.

The series of “militarized” “Veprey-1V” was replenished with the VPO-147 model in 2016. Structurally, very similar to the VPO-127 in .308 Win caliber (7.62x51 mm), the VPO-147 has a fundamental difference from the 127 - the so-called polygonal rifling of the barrel. But more about it below.

As for the barrel length of 420 mm, which may seem too short, the VPO-147 had no alternatives on sale. The rifling pitch is 320 mm. The instructions mention VPO-147-01, 02.03 with barrels of 360 mm, 520 mm and 590 mm, respectively, but they are not currently on sale.

It is believed that the Vepr has a receiver made of thicker steel sheet, since the base for it was not the AK, but the RPK. Indirectly, this is confirmed by the weight characteristics - the Saiga-308-1 with a 555 mm barrel weighs 3.8 kg, and the VPO-147 with a 420 mm barrel weighs 4.4 kg.

The bonus of the short barrel is that with the stock folded, the VPO-147 becomes very compact - only 670 mm or a little more. Of course, there is a fire blocker when the stock is folded. Carbine length with stock unfolded 937 mm

By the way, the first thing I tried to do when I brought the carbine home was to fold the butt. The algorithm is as follows: put the weapon on safety, press the butt locking lever towards the muzzle of the barrel and, using force, fold it until it clicks.

The lever, by the way, is very small and inconvenient. I'm used to the Saigas - they have a very large button, the force is directed downwards and not to the side. In short, I couldn’t fold the butt of the “Boar” the first time. WD-40 liquid was called to the rescue. I carefully sprayed the locking assembly, waited, then lubricated it with aerosol oil. The process of folding the butt looked like this: two stools, a knee, I hold the lever with one hand and, hurray, the butt is folded! True, “Vepr” (living up to its name) “kicked” me hard on the thigh with its front sight, leaving an impressive bruise.

The butt folds out more easily, but I will still note a very small latch, which is located at the base of the receiver.

Subsequently, I discussed the issue of folding the stock with the store clerks, and, sancta simplicitas, they admitted that they use a wooden mallet to fold the stock on the new Veprs. They say that on the new Veprs this adjustment was made to avoid the stock from wobbling. Now the butt has been developed.

The folding stock has a small rubber butt pad and a rotating cheekpiece with a lock.

I’ll also note the rear sight with graduations up to 1000 m - I don’t understand why this is necessary, but it’s beautiful.

To install an optical or collimator sight on the VPO-147, there are two bases: a traditional side rail and a Weaver on the top of the receiver cover.

I had my doubts about the Weaver on the lid - how is the mounting rigidity ensured? However, it is worth looking at the thick pin with which the cover is connected to the receiver to dismiss all doubts. The lid moves quite tight.

The answer to the question of how necessary two bases are at the same time is in the passport, which stipulates that the weight of the sight mounted on the Weaver should not exceed 600 g. That is, we are talking about small and light sights. The sight should also be short, or the rings should be high, otherwise its front part will cling to the rear sight.

That is, we can draw the following conclusion - the upper bar is intended for collimators or small “corral” type sights. But something “monumental” will have to be installed on the side bar

Another Weaver rail is present on the lower plastic handguard.

The bar is cast together with the overlay itself. This bar is made quite roughly. For example, I was unable to attach an additional folding handle to it - its fastening did not fit into the grooves of the bar. Many shooters do not need such a bar at all; its ribs interfere with the grip of the weapon. Personally, I would prefer the Weaver metal bar mountings.

By the way, on the sides of the lower handguard there are holes, as I understand it, for Weaver rails.

The fire control handle is very large, comfortable, even with some semblance of anatomical cutouts for the fingers. Personally, I didn’t have any particular complaints about her.

The fuse is classic for AK, flag. The difference is the protruding “mustache” at the back of the flag.

The muzzle brake-compensator (DTC) is threaded and secured with a spring-loaded latch. If desired, you can change it to another or another threaded device.

Well, here we come to the most important thing, which is the main feature of the VPO-147 carbine - polygonal rifling of the barrel. Instead of the usual rifling, flat surfaces of the inside of the barrel, twisted in a spiral, are used. To make it easier to imagine, take a hexagon and twist it along the edges - and you will get a model of a polygonal trunk inside. By the way, about the number of grooves. Typically, it is customary to use barrels with six polygonal rifling; the VPO-147 has four rifling. How this is better than six, I can’t say.

Polygonal rifling, of course, is not new in the weapons world. The history of small arms with a polygonal barrel dates back to the middle of the 19th century and is associated with the name of Sir Joseph Whitworth. Polygonal cutting in modern arms production is used both on pistols (for example, Glock, Heckler & Koch, CZ) and on some rifles (G3, PSG-1).

A little theory. Due to the fact that there are no classic rifling we are used to, the bullet experiences less resistance when moving inside the barrel. This suggests two obvious conclusions: the survivability of the barrel increases and the initial velocity of the bullet increases. That is why I was not particularly worried about the short (420 mm) barrel compared to 520 mm, for example, in the VPO-127. It is quite possible that VPO-147 will show a similar muzzle velocity taking into account polygonal rifling.

Since I am going to use this carbine to test various types of optics, the survivability of the barrel plays an important role when choosing a weapon. “Hammer” in the weapon’s passport writes about 4,000 rounds of guaranteed firing, but in unofficial conversations they name a much higher figure - up to 10,000 rounds.

The inner surface of the barrel is, of course, chrome plated.

The internal structure of the carbine is not much different from the usual AK, except that the bolt has three lugs versus two in the classic design. This is due to the use of a significantly more powerful cartridge.

The kit includes one double-row magazine for 5 rounds (SOK-95 sb.16), interchangeable with many of the Vepras in .308 Win caliber. There is also a 10-charge version, the retail price of both stores is 1,400 rubles.

The cardboard box in which the Vepr carbines are now packaged is made in .

In general, according to my feelings, “Molot” turned out to be “a solid AK for respectable gentlemen”, which is very, very “inspiring”.

Installing an optical sight

The Hawke Endurance 30 1-4×24 IR (L4a) optical sight (read in Russian as “Hawk” in Russian) was installed on the carbine, which is undergoing long-term endurance tests in the editorial office of www.gun-test.ru and www.pro-outdoor. ru. A test of this sight in comparison with some other “beaters” will be published in the near future.

For installation, I used quick-release rings from the American company Warne (in Russian - “Vorn”) model

Warne Tactical MSR flat top 30 mm, made of aircraft grade aluminum (not China!).

As I wrote above, the only possible option for installing a long sight on top of the Weaver rail on the VPO-147 is to use high rings, since the front of the sight touches the rear sight when using low rings.

The total weight of the sight + ring system was 640 g, which is slightly more than the 600 g recommended by the factory.

What to “feed” the “Boar”?

For the test, I decided to choose domestically produced cartridges costing up to 50 rubles. per piece This choice is determined by the ideology of the polygonal barrel - for the sake of which everything was started: to shoot a lot and cheaply.

Based on the fact that the full rotation of the bullet in the VPO-147 barrel is 320 mm or 12.5 inches, it can be assumed that the most suitable ammunition for this barrel should be those that have bullets weighing 150-168 grains or 9.7 - 10 .9 g.

I selected the following types of cartridges for the test (of course, all fully jacketed - FMJ, prices Moscow region, April 2017):

Produced by BPZ

9.4 g (145 grains) with a steel case with a polymer coating, a bullet with a bimetallic jacket - 16.6 rubles;

9.4 g (145 grains), with a varnished steel case, a bullet with a bimetallic jacket - 16.8 rubles;

10.9 g (168 grains) with a steel case with a polymer coating, FMJ BT bullet with a bimetallic jacket - 18.4 rubles;

10.9 g (168 grains) with a varnished steel case, FMJ BT bullet with a bimetallic jacket - 18.4 rubles;

9.4 g (145 grains) with a galvanized steel case, a bullet with a bimetallic jacket - 17.1 rubles;

Refinery production

9.9 g (151 grains) bimetal case, tompak jacket, bullet with a two-element core - 44 rubles;

9.7 g (150 grains) bimetal case, bimetal shell – 29 rubles;

9.7 g (150 grains) bimetal case, tompak shell - 34 rubles;

12 g (185 grains) brass case, tombac shell, increased accuracy cartridge - 65 rub.

The last cartridge is out of the concept, both in weight (12 g) and in price (65 rubles), but for the sake of trying it, let it be. And, as it turned out, not in vain.

The shooting was carried out in two stages: at a distance of 50 m without an optical sight and at the same distance with a Hawke Endurance 30 1-4×24 IR (L4a) optical sight installed. Unfortunately, for organizational reasons it has not yet been possible to carry out shooting at 100 m; this will be done later, taking into account the results of this test and, possibly, the composition of the fired cartridges has been changed.

The shooting was carried out in series of five shots from a rest position from a sitting position. Between series, breaks were taken to cool the barrel.

There was no precipitation, clear, air temperature +8 degrees.

The recoil of the carbine was felt to be quite moderate, and the trigger was quite clear.

Shooting at a distance of 50 m, open sight/optical, best group (diameter between the centers of the outermost hits in the group). The STP was not adjusted from cartridge to cartridge.

conclusions

Of course, no miracle happened - the “minute” “Boar” did not happen. However, the result obtained is quite common for AKmoids - the best result is about 2.5 MOA.

As we can see from the above, there was no strong dependence when shooting on the weight of the bullet. Even a heavy 12 g bullet “flies” from the VPO-147 barrel quite decently and significantly better than many of the lighter ones. Therefore, there is no need to be afraid of heavy bullets. Rather, when selecting cartridges for VPO-147, you should be guided by the quality of the ammunition itself.

For now, we can draw the following intermediate conclusions based on the tested cartridges. The best cartridges tested for VPO-147 are Novosibirsk cartridges with increased accuracy with a bullet weighing 12 g, brass sleeve, Tompak jacket,

as well as Novosibirsk ones with a 9.7 g bullet (bimetal jacket) with a bimetal sleeve.

In my opinion, the latter cartridge is preferable in terms of price/accuracy ratio (29 rubles).

Among the Barnaul cartridges, it is worth paying attention to cartridges with a 10.9 g FMJ BT bullet with a bimetallic jacket and a steel varnished or polymer-coated sleeve.

I want to say that my experiments with VPO-147 are not finished, I will definitely return to this topic.

Separate output for the Hawke-Warne sight-mount system. So far, both the sight and the rings are showing their worth - STP has not “gone” anywhere, the sight is quite convenient to use. During this test, the sight withstood about 100 shots. Life tests continue.

Description

The release of this type of weapon is based on the caliber of ammunition that is used in the weapon. Each weapon model uses its own type of ammunition, which is why quite a lot of models of this type of weapon have appeared. However, all modifications of this type of weapon have some common characteristics.

Technical characteristics of "Vepr":

  1. To increase service life, the chamber and bore are chrome plated.
  2. Optics for the Vepr carbine can be used, or targeted shooting can be carried out with an open sight at a distance of up to 350 m.
  3. Recharging of the "Vepr" occurs automatically due to the fact that the energy of the exhaust gases and the return force of the spring are used.
  4. Almost all models are equipped with an orthopedic stock, which has a cutout for the thumb and a pistol grip.
  5. To reduce flashes of flame, a non-removable flame arrester is located on the body.
  6. To increase safety, the carbines have safety catches.
  7. To soften recoil, a rubber shock absorber is located at the end of the butt.
  8. The temperature at which you can fire ranges from -50 to +50 degrees Celsius.

Design

Carbines are available in several modifications, which depend on the type of cartridges used. If we talk about the automation of this type of weapon, it is built on the basis of Kalashnikov automatics, which provides enormous reliability and the ability to fire in the most extreme situations. The design features of weapon reloading, the presence of a flame arrester and the durability of the weapon were written above.

An additional safety measure for this weapon was that since 1997, all modifications of the Vepr-308 export version, as well as some modifications for domestic sale, also received a spring-loaded firing pin. If you use domestically produced cartridges, there will be no problems.

Advantages and disadvantages

The advantages include:

  • the large caliber of the bullet allows hunters to hunt large animals;
  • recoil is weak;
  • quite a long firing range;
  • high accuracy of fire;
  • there is the ability to conduct long-term shooting without loss of accuracy;
  • a longer sighting line improves the accuracy of the weapon;
  • Optical sights for the Vepr-308 carbine can be installed;
  • there is the possibility of firing from an open sight even with installed optics;
  • even at low temperatures the weapon will be fully operational;
  • the overall quality of the weapon is at a fairly high level;
  • the best price among weapons with similar parameters.

The disadvantages include:

  • heavy weight of the gun.
  • weak weapon balance.
  • The processing of the wooden parts of the weapon is poor.
  • When the fuse is switched, a loud sound is produced.
  • The open sight often becomes dislodged when crossing bushes or falling.
  • difficulties in disassembling the gas chamber.
  • difficulty in cleaning the gas chamber piston.

Carbine Vepr-308 - characteristics and review

After spending several years as amateur hunters, many people think about purchasing a serious weapon for serious hunting - a hunting rifle. A lot of questions immediately arise about which is better and more reliable, but this is a topic for a separate discussion, therefore, without going into any comparisons, we will simply consider one of the options offered by our market. We will talk about the semi-automatic carbine Vepr - 308.

Design features

1

Many people know that its ancestor is the Kalashnikov machine gun, and therefore it initially received a number of positive aspects inherent in military weapons, namely, trouble-free operation in the most extreme conditions and the reliability of all components.

In order for this weapon to correspond to the status of a hunting weapon, a number of appropriate changes were made to it. They affected, first of all, firing and safety systems (carrying out only a single shot, strengthening the locking unit), durability (chrome plating of the chamber, barrel bore, chamber, piston) and ergonomics (modified and improved butt, semi-open elongated forend).

2

Main technical characteristics

Caliber - 7.62x51 (308Win), dimensions: total length - 1105 mm, barrel length - 590 mm, stock and forend material - beech, magazine capacity - 5 and 10 rounds, weight - 4.1 kg

The carbine belongs to the group of self-loading weapons powered by the energy of powder gases. Sights include: a rear sight with side adjusting screws with setting the firing distance to 100-200-300m and a front sight, which is installed in front of the flash suppressor - adjustable both vertically and horizontally.

3

The fuse is a flag fuse, the bracket for installing optics provides only side mounting.

Advantages & disadvantages

What good things do hunters note about it:

— the size of the caliber allows you to effectively hunt large game animals, — low recoil, — a decent length of the distance over which fire can be fired, — excellent accuracy of fire, — the ability to fire a large number of shots in a row without a significant decrease in accuracy, — a long sighting line increases shooting accuracy , - the ability to fire from an open sight with installed optics, - durability of the chrome coating of components and parts of the carbine, - trouble-free operation at low temperatures, - good workmanship in general, - the best price in its niche.

What's bad about a carbine:

- increased weight, - not the best balance, - mediocre processing of the wooden parts of the weapon, - noisy switching of the safety flag, - the open sight often suffers when dropped and when passing through thickets, - constant loosening of the buttstock screw and the forend swivel, - difficulties in disassembling the gas chamber, — difficult cleaning of the gas chamber piston.

Owner review

A short review of the 308 from a fellow hunter who has owned it since 2005.

This semi-automatic carbine was chosen based on the ratio of good performance qualities of this model and low price. A barrel with a length of 590 mm was chosen as optimal for hunting mainly from a storage shed and occasionally from a room. The accuracy of shooting at the target was not checked; this was not necessary, because not a single animal had ever left wounded.

At one time I used different optics; in our forests it is almost impossible to shoot beyond 200 m, and during transportation it constantly gets knocked down, so I don’t use it at the moment. A night light was purchased for hunting wild boar and bear from towers. Its standard fastenings could not withstand the loads, so I had to strengthen them myself.

4

During the entire period of operation of the carbine, there was only one case of its failure - jamming of the cartridge due to the jamming of the edge of the brass sleeve. After the exclusion of such cartridges produced by the Novosibirsk plant, this did not happen again. Now I use only Barnaul cartridges with steel casings.

One more thing that could cause trouble is that after some time a crack appeared at the base of the stock.

5

In general, if we ignore some flaws in the assembly and appearance of the weapon related to its origin and budget, then we can say that I am quite happy with it.

There are a lot of videos on this topic, but after watching most of them, I chose one short one for quick reference, so to speak.
