The Grand Power T12 pistol has gained fame as the most powerful and reliable traumatic pistol in Russia. And this is largely deserved - pistols produced in Slovakia and firing pre-reform cartridges of 250-300 joules were indeed at the very top of the pantheon of short-barreled civilian weapons in Russia. But then the 2011 weapons reform happened, which limited the energy of a shot to 91 J, and then a ban on the import of OOOP. Now the production of Grand Power T12 is located at the Fortuna plant in Nizhny Novgorod. How all these changes affected the famous “Slovak” - we’ll figure it out in this article.

Design of the Grand Power T12 pistol

As we said above, the GP T12 is created on the basis of the extremely successful K100 pistol, which is distinguished by high ergonomics, convenient layout of control units, high reliability and attractive design. The tactical and technical characteristics of the pistol are as follows:

Automation operates on the principle of free movement of the bolt - this is the most common scheme for pistols chambered for a low-power cartridge. The pistol bolt is made from a solid milled block of [crnimo] steel alloy - it has a huge service life and does not rust.

The pistol has a very rich set of equipment - a spare magazine, a spare spring of increased rigidity, equipment for cleaning and maintenance, front sights and a case!

An interesting engineering solution - the pistol frame is separated from the plastic receiver-shell, which makes the design lighter. In the realities of Russian legislation, this makes it possible to change the entire receiver of a pistol without breaking the law, since license plates are not applied to the frame body, but to the removable barrel frame itself. The procedure for replacing the shell is carried out, for example, during repairs, or to replace the standard one with ergonomic sports shells during tuning.

The pistol is fed from a 17-place double-row box magazine; also in various tuning studios you can find enlarged magazines with a capacity of up to 30 places - again, for sporting use, since the law limits the number of equipped places for civilian use in a magazine to 10.

The pistol's trigger mechanism is double action, the pre-cocking and triggering are very soft, allowing you to operate the weapon with one hand. A double-sided safety and a double-sided magazine eject button allow both right- and left-handed people to use the weapon with ease. The bolt stop is automatically removed when the magazine is loaded, which is also very convenient for sports.

The barrel in modern pistols has barriers in the form of two small rectangular teeth at the base, immediately behind the chamber. This is the most gentle option, slightly reducing energy compared to an absolutely smooth barrel. The speed during test shootings between such a barrel and a barrel without obstacles using the same ammunition differs by only 5-10 meters per second.

Pros and cons of the pistol

Of course, the pistol has not only advantages, but also objective disadvantages, about all of them below:

Pros:

• The resource is very long, versions without barrel grooves can easily withstand 5-7 thousand shots without significant breakdowns;
• The power of the pistol, even despite legal restrictions, is very high;
• High accuracy of fire due to a smooth barrel with a sufficient area for acceleration and narrowing at the exit;
• Reliability of reloading and feeding of cartridges - there are almost no misfires, under-fires or distortions;
• Large ammunition load. Although the law limits the number of cartridges loaded into a magazine, the potential of a capacious magazine will be revealed in sports and recreational shooting.

Minuses:

• The price of the pistol is much higher than most traumatic pistols on the market;
• The weight and dimensions are not very suitable for everyday carry, despite the title of a compact pistol, it is quite large and heavy;
• Poor build quality of the ZiD and F series, high risk of running into defects when buying second hand.

The Slovak company Grand Power has long been known on the Russian civilian weapons market. With many short-barreled firearms projects under its belt, GP, albeit not without the help of Nizhny Novgorod AKBS, at the end of the 2000s the company’s products became the flagship of the traumatic segment of the Russian market. The T10, and then the T12, rubber-fired adaptations of their regular production pistols, became a bestseller, gaining a huge number of fans in the domestic weapons community and occupying a significant niche in self-defense weapons.

Alas, the fate of T12 was not simple either. After the ban on the import of firearms of limited destruction to Russia, the production of T12 had to be urgently established within the country. The first batches of T12 “produced by AKBS” suffered from many childhood ailments inherent in any launched product. Subsequently, the situation leveled out, the problems were corrected, and the quality increased. However, happiness did not last forever, and after the closure of AKBS in 2015 in the form in which we knew it, T12 disappeared from store shelves. Somewhat later, the T12 went on sale again, this time with the marks of the Dyagterev Plant. And again, crude products, problems with launching the product into production, frankly weak barrels that burst even when using cartridges with a power of up to 91 joules, again disappointed customers. By that time, the authority of T12 was already tarnished by the founder, people tried to look for “those Slovak” samples as a guarantor of quality. The market reacted immediately: the owners of the very first pistols made in Slovakia are selling them at the price of a good Italian gun.

As a result, at a certain point, the T12 turned from a high-quality workhorse with good technical characteristics into an expensive fetish for wealthy or fanatical individuals. Well, or in a game of roulette, where an unsuccessful bet could result in an exploding barrel.

First of all, the new T12 is distinguished by its barrels, on which the weakening valleys on the outside of the barrel have been removed. Instead, two barriers appeared inside the barrel, located at the chamber and in the middle of the barrel, at 6 and 12 o'clock, respectively. This barrel design excludes shooting with solid bodies, but allows the safe use of any factory 10x28 cartridges, including those that were released before the legislation was reformed in 2011.

Secondly, the protective coating on the shutter does not look pink, as was the case on models with the ZiD brand. Fans of unusual colors may be disappointed.

Otherwise, this is the same T12 that we are used to. Polymer shell, weight about 770 grams, double-sided safety, 10-round magazines, good trigger and pleasant ergonomics. All strengths remained unchanged, and errors and shortcomings were corrected.
