T-5000. T-5000 Orsis - high-precision sniper rifle

What associations do security officials have when they hear “T-5000 sniper rifle”?
Obviously, respectful, because the sniper rifle is deservedly considered the “queen” among other small arms.” And the new model from Orsis is a clear success of Russian gunsmiths, who have brought domestic sniper weapons to the level of the most advanced foreign developments. It has universal tactical capabilities that allow it to support combat operations at any time of the day, in any weather. A sniper armed with it is able to immediately begin performing combat missions. This balanced weapon is capable of reliably hitting the enemy at a distance of up to one and a half kilometers without preliminary technical preparation and shooting.

The army's need for a new sniper rifle

Let's remember the story. The T 5000 replaced the SVD rifle. The Dragunov rifle was developed in the 60s and chambered for a 7.62 mm x 54 mm cartridge. It is limited in range - up to medium distance. The target range – 400 m – allowed it to be used effectively in combat operations of the 20th century.

However, in the 21st century, the concept of sniping has changed. The firing range of 1 km has become relevant. Based on physics, to increase it, it is necessary to increase the caliber accordingly. However, in practice, this step regarding the Dragunov rifle turned out to be unpromising.

Firstly, the modification of the SVDK, “sharpened” for the 9 mm cartridge, added weight, which caused snipers to complain about rapid fatigue from shooting from unstable conditions. However, the main drawback was “hidden” in the cartridge itself, developed by Wilhelm Brenecke at the beginning of the 20th century. The work of the German gunsmith had proportions that were not optimal for long-range shooting: a relatively large bullet mass with a relatively small cartridge case. Accordingly, the energy of the powder gases turned out to be insufficient for targeted shooting over 400 m.

Russian designers became aware of the futility of further modernization of the SVD. The world's sniper rifles (German DSR-1, American M-110, Israeli M-89 SR, British L-96) have already crossed the sniping line of 1 km. This temporary tactical advantage had to be eliminated.

Creation of a basic enterprise

For tactical support of operations, an innovative rifle was required that corresponded to the class of the best foreign models.
The group acted as an investor in the creation of the Orsis enterprise, whose mission was to design the Russian T 5000 sniper rifle. The Orsis enterprise (Weapon Systems) implemented a full production cycle: from the manufacture of all parts to the assembly of the rifle itself. By the end of 2011, manufacturers achieved their ultimate goal - to reach the level of the best foreign developments. According to Alexander Kostin, head of public relations at Promtekhnologii Group of Companies, currently no more than five companies in the world demonstrate such a level.

Trunk

One of the factors in the technological advantages of Orsis was the use of innovative high-quality stainless steel alloys. However, this was not enough. After all, the best sniper rifles in the world owe much of their precision characteristics to barrel rifling.

A short and strenuous path was chosen: immediately go to industrial cutting of the barrel. Russian gunsmiths have switched from mandrel shaping to single-pass trellis planing using a CNC machine. Such machines were created with the help of German and Swiss specialists and components. The developers did not reinvent the wheel. The starting point for the creation of Russian threading machines was their British analogues for single-pass cutting. Their “brain and heart” was a unique CNC from Promtekhnologii. As a result, a new technology was born in which the deviation from the basic accuracy does not exceed two microns.

The barrel of the new sniper weapon is equipped with longitudinal valleys, providing additional rigidity and cooling. An important part of the created weapon is a three-chamber muzzle brake-compensator developed in-house by Orsis. When sniping over long distances, the muzzle brake is unfastened, thereby increasing the firing range.

Bolt group. Two rifle options

The T 5000 carbine belongs to the “tactical rifle” class.
And modern tactics, as already mentioned, involve sniping both at medium distance (400–500 m) and at long range (about 1 km). In connection with the above, the designers proposed two basic options. The first (medium-range) used a standard bolt group designed for a standard 7.62 mm cartridge. The second option (long-range) is characterized by a longer bolt group serving the 8.58 mm Magnum cartridge.

The increase in sighting range was achieved by increasing the caliber of the cartridge to 8.58 mm by 69 mm.

Another constructive achievement was that Russian T 5000 sniper rifles have increased operational safety. One of the components of its achievement is a 30 percent safety margin of the bolt group relative to test pressure. Using heat treatment (hardening), the strength of the components of the bolt group made of stainless steel is increased. Special electrical discharge processing made it possible to give them high-precision spatial geometric dimensions.

Rifle design

The rifle is made of high-quality material, which provides it with a long service life.
The rifle is reloaded manually and is equipped with a longitudinally sliding bolt. Constipation - on two combat stops. The original bolt group of these rifles is made of high-quality stainless steel. There are two basic configurations of this weapon:

  • standard bolt group (.308 Win caliber (7.62 x 51 mm));
  • extended bolt group (caliber .338 Lapua Magnum (8.6 x 70 mm)).

The T-5000 barrel is made of special barrel stainless steel on a high-precision CNC machine using the trellis planing method. This allows for minimal deviation from the reference caliber, the error does not exceed 2 microns. Such precision manufacturing ensures long and uninterrupted operation of the weapon while maintaining high shooting accuracy.

Comfort for the shooter

The Orsis T-5000 rifle, as experts admit, turned out to be convenient for a sniper.
The shooter's hand rests effortlessly on the pistol grip, and the adjustable buttstock easily adapts to his anthropometry. When transferring the weapon to the traveling state, the butt is moved to the side and secured using a special magnetic lock. The Picatinny rail allows the use of optical sights (we will discuss them below). However, what is the main convenience of the T-5000 for a sniper? In combat properties that allow you to effectively perform complex combat missions. Its mechanics are amazingly well-adjusted and, accordingly, it achieves remarkable precision characteristics. Glass bedding technology compensates for the significant impact of torque from the passage of a bullet, the force acting on the screws securing the barrel to the stock, and recoil forces. Thanks to a special epoxy bedding under the bolt group (which, in fact, is called “glass bedding”), its secure fit to the stock is ensured and, as a result, “the sight does not go astray” over time.

The rifle is ergonomic, provides a low level of recoil and, importantly, the sight remains on the target after the shot. The latter is important in order to see the result of the shooting, because the rate of fire (20 rounds per minute) allows you to fire an additional shot to kill.

High-precision sniper rifles ORSIS T-5000 (ORSIS T-5000) are produced by the weapons manufacturer of the Promtekhnologii industrial group, located in Moscow. This plant, launched in May 2011, is unique in the Russian arms industry. This is a full-fledged, high-tech, full-cycle weapons production facility, built with funds from private investors under the leadership and active participation of shooters of the highest level. The company is focused primarily on the civilian market for high-precision hunting and sporting weapons, however, the ORSIS product line also includes specialized sniper systems designed for particularly accurate shooting at medium and long ranges. These rifles can be used both by special units of law enforcement agencies (FSB, FSO, Ministry of Internal Affairs), and by specially trained army snipers.

All ORSIS rifles are produced entirely by the enterprise itself, which purchases only raw materials (plastic, rolled steel, barrel blanks in the form of rods) from external suppliers. Thanks to the widespread use of precision CNC machines, ORSIS rifles, based on one basic design, can have a wide variety of configurations. If we talk about ORSIS T-5000 sniper rifles, these rifles are offered in two basic versions - with a standard bolt group chambered for .308 Winchester / 7.62x51 and with an extended bolt group chambered for .338 Lapua Magnum / 8.6 x71. In both calibers, ORSIS rifles in real field conditions provide very high and stable accuracy of fire - less than 0.5 MOA, often about 0.3 MOA and better. The practical firing range for .308 caliber rifles is about 800 meters, for .338 caliber rifles – up to 1500 meters.

ORSIS T-5000 sniper rifles are based on an original bolt group made of stainless steel in two basic sizes (“standard” for .308 cartridges and “long” for .338 cartridges). The bolt is longitudinally sliding, rotating, and is locked with two lugs in its front part. Rifle barrels are also made of stainless steel, the rifling is formed using a single-pass cutting method (trellis planing), which ensures very high quality barrel bore geometry, and, as a result, stable and high accuracy of fire. The chamber and bore geometry are optimized for use with factory-made ammunition. The muzzle of the barrel has a thread for attaching a muzzle brake-compensator or other muzzle devices. It is possible to install trunks with any characteristics, different lengths and contours.

The trigger mechanism (trigger mechanism) is also made of stainless steel and is fully adjustable for all main parameters. The trigger force, depending on the version of the trigger, can be smoothly adjusted in the ranges of 500 - 900 g or 1000 - 1500 g. A three-position safety lock is located in the rear part of the bolt and, if necessary, allows you to manipulate the bolt with the safety switch on, or completely block the trigger mechanism and gate.

Cartridges are fed from detachable box magazines with a capacity of 5 and 10 rounds.

T-5000 rifles (ORSIS T-5000) are placed in an aluminum “skeleton” stock with a folding butt of the original design (mechanical fixation), a plastic pistol grip and butt cheek. When placing the receiver in the stock, the so-called “glass-bedding” is performed, i.e. making a “bed” in the stock for the bolt group from an epoxy composition with a filler (aluminum or steel powder), this ensures a very tight connection between the bolt group and the stock, which significantly increases the stability of the characteristics of the accuracy of fire. The stock has a special gasket for hand-held shooting. The handguard has a special design for mounting a bipod (optimized for Harris, but also has a standard swivel), as well as brackets for a pre-objective attachment. The force when folding the stock is about two kilograms, which ensures the required structural rigidity.

To install sighting devices on the receiver, a Mil-Std 1913 type guide is made, colloquially known as a “Picatinny rail”. Due to the specific nature of the use of rifles (high-precision shooting at medium and long distances), open sights in the basic configuration are not installed on ORSIS sniper rifles.

Rifle testing

What did the official presentation of the newly created T 5000 show?
The high-precision sniper rifle officially demonstrated its combat properties for the first time in the fall of 2011 at the VIII International Arms Exhibition in Nizhny Tagil. The demonstration was performed by Dmitry Semizorov, a sniper shooting specialist recognized in Russia and the world. The targets were located at 540, 300 and 100 meters. The test shooting results were more than successful. The shooting center strictly coincided with the center of the target. This was facilitated by design features introduced by Promtekhnologii specialists: an innovative system for positioning the cartridge in the firing mechanism and deliberately precise balancing of the rifle, which led to the recoil occurring strictly horizontally, without taking the sight off the target. The bullet's departure from the aiming line at a distance of 100 m, just like the German DSR-1 rifle, was only a few millimeters. It is not surprising that the Orsis T 5000, which was so impressively presented, received positive reviews, and Russian anti-terrorist and special law enforcement units immediately wanted to adopt it.

Conclusion

In June 2012, at the World Sniper Shooting Championship in Hungary, the Russian “Alpha” took first place, competing with domestic “Orsis” T 5000 sniper rifles. From the same year, these weapons began to be used by anti-terrorist and special law enforcement units. In addition, it is also produced for sale.

Does it have any disadvantages? For a long time we tried to find them on the Internet. To be honest, it didn't work out. Only two wishes for the designers caught my eye. First: modify the cutoff between the “current” cartridge, i.e. fed into the chamber, and following it. Second (this is subjective): increase the magazine capacity.

History of creation

The Orsis rifle is the brainchild of the arms factory of the same name, which is based in Moscow. The world first saw the Orsis T-5000 sniper rifle in 2011. A few years later, the company released a modernized version, the Orsis T-5000M.

As is known, state-owned enterprises deal with weapons in the Russian Federation, while most NATO countries negotiate arms supplies with private companies. The Orsis plant (Promtekhnologiya LLC) is financed by private investors, so it has chosen a slightly different path for the development of its products, in contrast to state-owned enterprises.

Previously, sniper weapons for the Russian intelligence services were purchased from private companies, because the domestic market could not offer a truly worthy alternative to foreign weapons of this class. The release of the Orsis rifle was a real breakthrough for the arms factory and the entire country as a whole. This model was immediately well received by professionals, and today it is preferred by many intelligence agencies.

Interesting! The name of the Orsis plant is formed by the first two syllables of the phrase “weapon systems.” The start of the enterprise coincides with the year of production of their famous rifle.

Company Features:

  • large machine park for the production of weapons (high-precision CNC machines);
  • Consistently high product quality;
  • compliance with standards at every stage of production;
  • highly qualified workers.

The main treasure of an enterprise is its employees. The current CEO is Alexey Sorokin. This person knows what the buyer wants to get from a high-precision weapon, since he is a master of sports in shooting. It should be noted that he is the main designer of this rifle, and it was his sketch that marked the beginning of the production and release of the T 5000.
