The customer for such a grenade launcher was Jordan, the development was carried out by Russia, and production was established at a Jordanian enterprise with the help of Russian specialists.

Beneficial cooperation

Since the beginning of the 2000s, on the initiative and by order of King Abdullah II, Jordan has been building its own defense industry and related industries.
Such construction was carried out at the expense of budgetary and borrowed funds, as well as with the use of foreign scientific and technical assistance. In the mid-2000s, the Jordanian leadership drew attention to Russian-made anti-tank weapons, which soon led to the launch of a new project. During the IDEX 2005 exhibition in Abu Dhabi, King Abdullah II got acquainted with Russian developments in the field of rocket-propelled grenade launchers and took the initiative to create a joint project of such weapons. Jordan wanted to receive a new anti-tank rocket launcher and was ready to develop technical specifications and pay for the work. In this case, the Russian side was entrusted with the direct development of the project. It is curious that some technical features of the future grenade launcher were determined directly during negotiations at the exhibition.

In the future, through joint efforts, the two countries were to establish weapons production in Jordan. At the same time, we immediately agreed on the commercial future of the project. Thus, it was planned to introduce the new grenade launcher and rounds to the international market, and they decided to assemble export products at a Jordanian plant.

Soon the necessary negotiations were held and agreements were signed. Jordan was represented by several organizations, most notably the King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau (KADDB). The lead developer of the future grenade launcher was the Russian State Research and Production Enterprise Basalt, which has extensive experience in the field of anti-tank weapons.

The future grenade launcher received the designation RPG-32 and the name “Hashim” - in honor of the Jordanian ruling dynasty of the Hashemites and its founder. Subsequently, serial products produced in Jordan received a new name “Nashshab” - “destructive” or “crossbow”. For some time now, the name “Barkas” has been mentioned in Russian reports, and individual components of the grenade launcher system have received the indices GRAU.

The design work took minimal time. Already in 2006-2007. Tests began, and soon the new Hashim began to be shown at exhibitions. At the same time, discussions began on organizing future mass production.

Concept and its implementation

At the stage of determining the technical requirements and appearance of the future RPG-32, a number of original ideas were proposed.
The use of a new architecture and layout, uncharacteristic of Soviet and Russian grenade launchers, was envisaged. It was also proposed to create a family of standardized ammunition for various purposes in two calibers, which would make it possible to optimize the mass and combat qualities of the complex. The Hashim product in a combat position consists of a launcher, a sight and a shot in the form of a detachable transport and launch container. The assembled grenade launcher has a total length of 1.2 m and weighs from 6 to 10 kg, depending on the ammunition used. The complex in a disassembled or combat position is carried and used by one grenade launcher.

The main element of the complex is the 6G40 starting device. It is made in the form of a pipe-barrel with a length of 360 mm and a weight of 3 kg. The trigger mechanism and sight mounts are located on the outer surface. At the rear end there are mounts for a TPK shot. Resource – up to 200 shots. In the stowed position, the device is carried separately from the container; the sight is removed from its place and placed inside the pipe.

Products of the Jadara plant

The standard sight for the RPG-32 is the PGK-1 / GS-1DN or 1P81 product developed by the Belarusian holding BelOMO. This is a daytime optical sight for shooting at a standard range of up to 700 m. Then a replacement sight GPD-1 or GS-2R with a laser rangefinder and a ballistic computer was created. For shooting at night, the sights can be equipped with NV/A-1 or NV/A-2 attachments or a TC/A-1 thermal imager.

Shots for various purposes were developed for the RPG-32 in 105 and 72.5 mm calibers. The use of two calibers is due to the specific use of grenade launchers in modern combat. Research has shown that the high power of a 105mm grenade is required for only 10% of targets on the battlefield. Other targets that have less powerful protection can be hit by 72.5 mm ammunition, which is more compact, lighter, cheaper and easier to handle.

The destruction of protected targets is ensured by the PG-32V grenade. This product, in 105 mm caliber, weighs 6 kg and is equipped with a tandem cumulative warhead with a penetration of 650 mm behind dynamic protection. A 3-kg thermobaric shot TBG-32V has also been developed. Armor-piercing and thermobaric rounds were also created in the 72.5 mm caliber. They differ from larger products in their reduced weight and combat characteristics. Inert training rounds were developed in two calibers.

During production

Despite the design differences and the difference in combat characteristics, all grenades have the same ballistics and a firing range of up to 700 m. This simplifies the training of grenade launchers and the subsequent combat use of weapons against different targets using different shots.

Product in series

The development of the RPG-32 grenade launcher was completed in the second half of the 2000s, and preparations for production began at the same time.
Especially for the production of these weapons, the Jadara Equipment & Defense Systems company was founded in Jordan and the construction of its plant began. The release of the first serial products was expected over the next few years. However, building an enterprise and organizing international cooperation turned out to be quite difficult tasks. These events regularly encountered various organizational and other problems, as a result of which the production launch dates were repeatedly postponed. In addition, in 2010, Russia and Jordan had to sign a new, adjusted agreement on cooperation on grenade launchers.

Only in the spring of 2013 did NPO Basalt announce the readiness of the production line. Construction of the plant was completed, and the Russian company began supplying assembly kits for the production of serial grenade launchers and rounds. By the end of the year, it was planned to transfer parts for 20 thousand grenade launchers and significant quantities of grenades.

On May 30, 2013, a ceremony was held to launch the Jadara plant and mass production. It was announced that the RPG-32 grenade launcher is now called “Nashshab”. In addition, by this time it was decided to abandon smaller caliber grenades and use only 105 mm rounds.

To the best of its ability, Jordan is trying to develop its weapons. Thus, in the middle of the decade, Quad series launchers were introduced. The Quad-1 product is a remote-controlled system on a tripod with an optical-electronic unit and four triggers. The Quad-2 project offers a similar product designed for installation on cars.

Serial deliveries

The estimated capacity of the Jadara plant reaches 60 thousand grenade launchers per year. In addition, it is capable of firing hundreds of thousands of grenades. According to the terms of Russian-Jordanian cooperation, such production potential was to be used both to rearm the Jordanian army and to enter the international market.

According to known data, in the first few years of production, the Jordanian industry produced several tens of thousands of grenade launchers for its own army and thereby completely covered its needs. It is likely that grenades of the required types are still being produced as needed.

In the mid-1990s, the Jadara company received its first export orders and soon began supplying weapons and ammunition to third countries. To date, Nashshabs have entered service in Egypt, Iraq, Tunisia and the UAE. Middle Eastern countries have traditionally shown great interest in Russian-developed weapons, and the RPG-32 was no exception. At the same time, foreign production did not prevent the realization of its commercial potential, and in some cases even contributed to it.

Since the end of the 2000s, the possibility of the RPG-32 entering service with the Russian army has been repeatedly mentioned. The grenade launcher complex received the domestic code “Barkas”, and its individual components were assigned GRAU indices. However, the army did not accept these weapons. The reasons for the abandonment of the unusual grenade launcher are unknown.

Mutual benefits

In general, the RPG-32 / Barkas / Hashim / Nashshad anti-tank rocket launcher is one of the most interesting modern Russian developments in the field of anti-tank weapons. First of all, the history of its appearance and creation, the difficult and slow path to mass production, as well as subsequent commercial successes in the Middle Eastern market are interesting.

In addition, the special architecture of the complex and its expanded combat capabilities are noteworthy. The Russian development organization moved away from traditional approaches and schemes, and the resulting weapon lived up to all the hopes placed on it.

It is also necessary to note the commercial features of the project. RPG-32 was immediately developed for a specific customer. Despite all the difficulties, Jordan brought the grenade launcher to serial production and purchased a large number of assembly kits from Russian partners. Then we managed to find customers from third countries, and Russia received the required license fees.

Thus, the two countries agreed to jointly develop a project in the field of infantry weapons, and then successfully implemented the existing agreements. And in the end, the partners got everything they wanted. Jordan carried out the required rearmament, and Russia tested new concepts and made good money on it.
