Sako TRG 22 A1: extended test of the Finnish high-precision long-range rifle of 6.5 Creedmoor caliber

Sniper rifle Sako TRG M10

Most recently, the new Sako TRG M10 sniper rifle was presented, and the rifle is clearly Finnish, but many sources mention the Beretta company. Either this is some kind of mistake, or Beretta has updated the weapon, in general, we will not understand this Santa Barbara, but will try to get acquainted with the weapon itself, especially since not just one rifle has been created, but a whole platform with barrels of different lengths and for various cartridges.

Since the characteristics of weapons are usually lost in the text, we will start not in the standard way, but with numbers. The weapon is designed for three ammunition, namely 7.62x51 (.308 Win), 7.62x63 (.300 Win Mag) and 8.58x70 (.338 LM). Accordingly, these ammunitions have barrel lengths: 408, 510, 602.656 millimeters; 408, 510, 602.656 millimeters and 408, 510, 602.689 millimeters. Magazine capacities, in the same order for ammunition, are 11, 7 and 8 rounds. There is no exact data yet on the weight of the weapon and overall length.

The rifle itself is a manually loaded weapon fed from detachable box magazines. The stock is folding and attached to the pistol grip of the weapon at two points. The butt has the ability to adjust its length, as well as the height of the cheek rest. Of course, the weapon is not without plastic and light alloys, but visually everything is in moderation and everything is in its place. The Sako TRG M10 sniper rifle has four seats in the form of picatinny rails, one line on top for sighting devices, two short ones on the sides and one on the bottom.

Folding, height-adjustable bipods are installed on the lower mounting bar, and it is worth noting that the installation location of the bipod can vary throughout the entire mounting bar, which in some situations can be convenient, for example, when installing an effective silent shooting device that will change the balance of the weapon. The rifle does not have open sights, but they can easily be installed on the upper mounting rail; of course, they are not included in the kit. The barrel of the weapon, of course, is free-floating, as is clear from the information written above, it can be of different lengths, which justifies the ability of the bipod to move along the mounting bar for more convenient use of the weapon. The rifle magazine is fixed with a button located next to the safety bracket, which on the one hand saves space and shortens the length of the weapon, but is not entirely convenient.

It’s difficult to evaluate the rifle yet, since there are practically no reviews about it. Further complicating matters is that the weapon has yet to gain much attention despite being able to use the most popular ammunition. If you look at the pictures, I personally think the joints of the butt are quite flimsy, after all, the weapon is planned to use not the weakest cartridges, and it would not happen that the butt would become loose after a hundred or two shots. Actually, apart from this, there seems to be nothing to complain about. Considering that the weapon was designed on the basis of the TRG-42, it is generally doubtful that there could be any problems with it, since in order to spoil the “bolt” you need to have talent.

If we consider the weapon as a multi-caliber weapon, then we need to note several not-so-successful points. In particular, when changing ammunition, you will have to change the magazine receiver, as I understand it, since it is quite difficult to achieve versatility in this matter with different lengths of cartridges and, apparently, the designers did not strive for this. Nothing is known about the method of attaching the barrel of a weapon, which is important in general for a rifle, and not just a multi-caliber base. The ability to use a wide variety of devices is pleasing, but this is already the norm for modern weapons. In general, I would like to see a larger list of possible ammunition for use, since the one that is available, although good, is very small.

In general, it is too early to draw final conclusions, or indeed any conclusions at all, since the weapon has not yet proven itself. Perhaps something in the rifle will be changed, the list of ammunition will be replenished, or at least facts about the weapon will become known, and then it will be possible to make a full review, but for now we wait.
