The blowback function in air pistols is otherwise known as the recoil function, which simulates the slide movements found in firearms; this makes the pneumatic gun special and more beloved among airgun connoisseurs.
In addition, when choosing an air pistol, most people pay attention to the blowback function, otherwise they will not be able to experience true pleasure from the shots. And it’s even better if, when firing, the gun makes sounds characteristic of a firearm. Watch the video:
It is worth noting that almost no one cares that air pistols with a blowback function are noticeably inferior in default to their “immobilized” prototypes, because this is where the rules of physics come into play.
A certain part of the energy is supplied to the shutter mechanism so that it moves to the delight of its owner, and it is this energy that will not reach the bullet itself.
But if the shooter only wants to produce a psychological effect or take part in recreational shooting, then this difference between pistols with blowback and firearm analogues is only to the benefit of its owner.
We present to your attention a mini-review of air pistols with blowback. They differ in their configuration, color, size, country of manufacture and power. But they all have one thing in common - the power of recoil.
Repair work
The main areas of modernization associated with repair work relate to the replacement of the valve through which gas enters the sealed compartment. First you need to determine the location of the leak. The easiest way is to immerse the gun in water (to avoid corrosion, it is better to immerse parts in alcohol)
If gas bubbles come out from under the cylinder, then the reason is the gasket, but gas can escape from the hole under the balls. Most likely the cause is the valve or its gasket.
Pay attention to the side of the valve; it may simply be damaged and therefore does not fit tightly to the seat.
To replace the over-cylinder gasket, you must dismantle the old one. The inner surface of the nut must be cleaned with a cotton swab. All unnecessary elements (burst) are removed from the new gasket, and then the gasket is installed in the nut. To ensure a secure seating of the gasket, it is recommended to install an empty can and tighten it. Tightness should be checked every 2-3 hours. After a day, the gasket will take its place in the nut.
The gasket on the valve can be changed in a simple way. Here, too, it is necessary to cut off the excess parts remaining during the manufacturing process. The gasket is not symmetrical. One side is flat. In order not to make a mistake, you need to remember that the flat surface of the gasket is adjacent to the washer, and the convex side of the gasket should “look” at the chamber. During each disassembly, it will be useful to polish the washer along the plane of contact with the gasket. Inspect the front of the valve.
The ball feeder often leaves dents on it, which is unacceptable. The neck of the valve must be made perfectly round without changing its diameter. Polishing should bring the parts to a mirror shine. Before assembly, it will be useful to wipe all parts with alcohol.
Blowing from under the valve seat occurs due to the fact that the thin gasket provided by the factory cannot fully perform its functions. This gasket is replaced with a thicker ring, which is included in the repair kit. But this ring sticks out somewhat from under the saddle, which is fraught with its rapid destruction after several operations with the magazine. One solution to the problem is to install two gaskets. The edge of the seat must be polished. Every mechanic should make it a rule to polish the back flange of the valve every time it is disassembled.
The ring from the repair kit mentioned above is a gasket installed between the head and the magazine frame. It fails less often, but is still replaced. The surfaces of the gasket are lubricated with silicone sealant. After assembly, any remaining sealant should be removed. Unfortunately, everyone will have to acquire the skill of such repair work, since they will be required after changing 2-3 cylinders. Even though all the gaps have been eliminated, try not to leave a loaded cylinder in the gun for a long time.
Disabling the blowback system
Is it possible to disable blowback in pneumatics to improve performance? Yes, but it is recommended that the operation be performed by an experienced user. Complete disassembly and reassembly of the weapon is required. The first task is easy to complete, but the second is more difficult. Errors in assembling the product will lead to incorrect operation of its mechanism.
Steps to disable blowback:
- Disassembly .
The procedure depends on the model. - Removing the special lever.
This structural element is found in many devices. Located under the body. After removing it, the bolt frame will become motionless. - Assembly.
The gun will work properly, and accuracy and power will increase up to 15%. Models with a moving shutter are not recommended for fans of accurately hitting a target from a long distance. Pneumatics with a blowback successfully work in close combat and scare away hooligans on the streets (if it is an exact copy of a military weapon). It is recommended to purchase a model with a movable AR to practice skills before switching to a traumatic analogue.
Upgrade
To increase the power of the gun, you can improve the valve itself. To do this, it is clamped in a vice. The central hole is broken by lightly tapping the core. It should turn from cone-shaped to straight. Then, using a 3.3 mm drill at low speeds, the valve is drilled out from the inside. The top part is chamfered with a 3.5 mm drill.
If the valve is clamped in a vice so that its side faces up, you can see three bypass holes. They are also drilled with a 2mm drill. By choosing the angle of the drill, you can ensure that the holes become oval. At the last stage, it is necessary to polish the side, and also file or upset the spring.
Is it possible to disable blowback?
Since blowback affects the power and accuracy of shooting, a natural question arises: can it be turned off to improve these indicators? Yes, this is possible, but to disable the system the gun will have to be disassembled. Depending on the manufacturer, the shutdown process will vary. We do not recommend doing this if you are a novice shooter. Disassembling a pistol is usually easy, but not everyone can assemble it correctly.
A small lever under the body is responsible for the presence or absence of a blowback in a weapon. Usually it is simply removed and the product is put back together. After this, the firing range and initial velocity of the bullet are improved by an average of 10-15% - the exact figure depends on the specific model.
But why make such modifications if you can just buy the product without the blowback? Weapons with blowback are suitable for shooters who value realism in close combat. For sports where accurate shooting over long distances is important, we recommend not purchasing models with a blowback.
Other changes
The diameter of the combat Makarov barrel is 9 mm. If you look at the end of an air gun, the difference is easy to notice. Visibility is created by drilling out the barrel, but this must be done very carefully. The depth of the drilled hole should not exceed 7 mm. It is recommended to drill in stages, gradually increasing the diameter of the drill.
Care is needed to ensure that the drilling axis does not shift. The lowest rotation speed is selected. For aesthetics, the cut of the barrel is polished and slightly rounded. Then the chamfer on the inside is removed. If desired, it is not difficult to make a dummy of four rifling on the inside of the barrel. Blueing of the inner surface is carried out with any suitable liquid.
If there is no cut on the shutter, you will have to make it yourself. Having selected the appropriate dimensions, the work should be done using a medium file. If you drill with a drill, there is a high probability of damaging the surface of the shutter.
"Walter PPK S"
In their reviews, owners of the Walther PPK S air pistol note on the positive side its low weight, ease of holding, and good accuracy. Among the disadvantages are low quality materials, an inconvenient clamping screw, and a short firing range. The blowback system performed mediocre.
The initial bullet speed is 115 meters per second, the clip holds only 15 ball charges. Visually, the replica differs from the combat original in the elongated handle and the visibility of the clamping screw. The quality of painting also raises complaints; in some places the paint simply peels off after a few months of use. The build quality also leaves much to be desired, especially in the bolt carrier part.
Characteristics:
- length (cm) – 17;
- weight (g) – 755;
- height (cm) – 14;
- caliber (mm) – 4.5.

"Glacier APS"
This Gletcher Blowback air pistol replicates the APS themed firearm model. The weight and control indicators are as close as possible to the characteristics of the Stechkin. As the owners note, the blowback system functions optimally. During the firing process, the bolt moves forward and backward when the hammer is cocked. After the clip is empty, the slide stop function is activated.
Gletcher APS is equipped with an adjustable drum-type rear sight. The owners note that it has a gradation of up to 200 meters, just like the original. The procedure for partial disassembly is also identical to the real weapon. The equipment includes a three-position safety, a movable bolt frame, and a handle made of weapons-grade plastic. BB balls are used as charges.
Options:
- weight (g) - 1040;
- length (cm) – 22;
- caliber (mm) – 4.5;
- Clip capacity – 22 balls.
The Makarov pistol
Makarov pistol
The external characteristics of the Makarov pneumatic pistol are no different from the combat PMM. Moreover, the MP-654K model adopted from its prototype the high impact and shock resistance, “invincible” design, ease of operation and excellent workmanship of even minor elements of the pistol.
You can shoot from the Makarov MP 654k 20 air pistol either with a preliminary erection of the trigger, or automatically thanks to a special versatile firing mechanism. If the trigger is on safety, then releasing the trigger is an absolutely safe process. In the same way, preparation for a shot occurs in a combat prototype. For a review of the pistol, watch the video:
In the pneumatic handle there is a firing device that reproduces an exact copy of the famous Makarov magazine. In a separate part there is this store, a valve and a canister filled with carbon dioxide.
The MP 654K charge uses conventional spherical steel bullets. Spray cans can be not only domestically produced, but also produced abroad; There are also several options for weight: an 8-gram can and a 12-gram can.
If we talk about the immediate advantages and disadvantages of the Makarov pneumatic pistol, then the obvious advantages include the following indicators:
There are few disadvantages to this pistol model:
Fans of silent shooting will like the material about the Colt 1911 with a silencer.
Design
The Stechkin air pistol is made of aluminum alloy. The only exception is the side pads on the handles, which are made of brown plastic with small notches. All visually visible elements are working. Including a blocking trigger and its pull, a safety lever to match the color of the cheek of the handle, a magazine release key. There are even Russian letters on the safety that indicate the firing mode. But the Gletcher APS, unlike the original pistol, does not have an automatic mode.
The barrel is metal, smooth, and is static during the firing process - that is, only the steel bolt moves. The shutter delay mechanism is only activated when there are no balls in the magazine. There are 22 pieces of them. (to avoid jamming, do not insert the last ball).
The magazine is installed in the heel of the handle below. Near it there is a place for a can of CO2 gas. To install it, you will need to remove the plastic cover on the left side by pressing on the small hook. The clamping bolt is located inside, to gain access to it there is a hole in the heel through which you need to reach with a hex key. It's quite inconvenient.
The rear sight is made of plastic, adjustable with wheels, in this case it perfectly imitates the original. On the wheels there is a scale from 25 to 200. Of course, an air pistol cannot shoot at such a distance, so these marks correspond to other indicators. What exactly needs to be determined experimentally. The front sight is not adjustable, but it is also on the original.
Best air pistols with blowback
Makarov pistol kmb44ahn
The can itself in the magazine is installed in the place where the cartridges are located in the combat pistol. The weight of the pneumatic analogue is 737 grams. The initial speed of the ball is 92 m/sec. This is not as fast as other pneumatic spears, but this is due to the fact that part of the gas is spent on the blowback system. On average, one can is enough for 80 shots.
If the bullet ejection speed on the last shots is lower than stated, this should not be surprising. To protect against an accidental shot, you can use a fuse. When purchasing an airsoft PM, the future shooter will receive a key for punching and pressing the cylinder, instructions, packaging and balls (up to 250 pieces, depending on the configuration).
Gletcher TT
This difference is explained by the fact that the manufacturer paid more attention to ammunition and preparation for firing. One of the tangible advantages is the metal body of the pistol. The main parameters of this air gun:
Gletcher BRT-92FS
The difference can only be noticed in the “heel” of the clip and the location of the flag-type fuse. Regarding the controls, they are located on the left side of the case. The sight has no adjustable mechanisms and is molded as one piece with the bolt cover. If you start looking for shortcomings, the inconvenient cylinder release screw catches your eye. This is due to the fact that to replace the reservoir you will have to completely remove it using a hex wrench.
Walter PPK-S
When compared with the original pistol in terms of external data, it is worth highlighting the elongated handle and the modified clamping screw. Some pistol owners are concerned about the quality of the paint used, as after a while it begins to peel off on the handle and barrel.

Gletcher APS
Due to its high quality and reliability, this model of pistol with a blowback is in service with some Russian special services. Externally, the pneumatic is almost impossible to distinguish from the original, since it completely replicates its size and color. There is also an imitation switch (extractor) on the case. In the combat version, it is necessary to switch to burst firing mode.
Dismantling Stechkin
Copying an analogue of a combat pistol, the manufacturer copied some components of the weapon. The pneumatic APS has the same incomplete disassembly as a real pistol.
Stages of partial disassembly:
- Let's take out the clip.
- Move the trigger guard.
- Removes the shutter.
- Remove the mainspring.
As you can see, everything is the same as in PM. But still, the bracket that separates the bolt cannot be removed in this case.
The process of complete disassembly of the APS:
- We take out the clip and remove the trigger guard.
- We move the shutter and pull it up.
- Remove the return spring.
- Remove the cover from the handle.
- We take out a can of gas (do not remove the can if there is still gas in it).
- Remove the bolt stop lever.
- Unscrew the screw from the right cheek and remove the right cover.
- Unscrew all 8 bolts that are on the right side.
- While unscrewing the bolts, we take out the trigger and safety mechanism.
- On the right side, unscrew the bolt of the fuse mechanism.
Complete and partial disassembly is required to maintain the weapon. Proper maintenance of all parts will help extend service life:
The barrel of a pistol should be cleaned in the same way as a shotgun, but a shorter cleaning rod should be chosen. After cleaning, be sure to spray the barrel with silicone. Silicone treatment (it is advisable to use silicone in cans). Spray silicone on the valve and ferrule outlet. This will improve sealing and keep the valve working longer. The valve is purged using a pump or compressor. Then use a clean cloth (preferably made of microfiber) to clean it. Why put a cloth on the rod and clean the walls with gentle rotational movements?

This model of pistol is distinguished by a unique type of cocking - a barrel fracture. Smoother and easier cocking is ensured by a unique system that involves the presence of a gas spring. It significantly reduces recoil and muffles the sound of a bullet leaving.
The owner of such a pistol can independently adjust the sighting bar along both the vertical and horizontal axis. The rear sight and front sight are equipped with fiber-optic threads, which contribute to increased accuracy of each shot. Watch the video:

What is it about?
First, let's try to decide what the BlowBack system is? In short and in Russian - imitation of jerking the shutter when firing as in combat. In addition to this main action, the blowback provides a recoil effect and self-cocking of the pistol.
The BlowBack should not be confused with a purely moving bolt carrier. Pistols with a blowback always have a movable bolt carrier, but the movable bolt carrier does not always work like a blowback. The second category includes many wonderful domestic air pistols - for example, MP-654k PM and Anix A-3000 “Skif”.
Why do I need this?
The above operating principle directly affects the design features of pistols and their technical characteristics. So, usually, but not always, the work of the exhaust gas results in a loss of initial power. This is also facilitated by the artificial reduction of capacity due to the presence of moving parts to reduce the risk of their rapid depletion. So, in any case, blowback pistols are not the choice of fans of powerful guns.
It will also be difficult to achieve accuracy in such toys. This indicator is influenced by the use of BB balls, which have never been characterized by increased accuracy. Also, in hardball, if there is insufficient training, the presence of that same imitation of recoil can affect accuracy during tempo shooting - after all, the pistol will throw, and the movable bolt frame, out of habit, can hit crookedly spaced fingers.
In summary, the weak and inaccurate pistol is suitable either for lovers of beautiful guns for shooting bottles, or for those who love the ambiance and similarity to the combat counterparts of hardball players. Speaking about military-tactical movement, we note that many 6 mm caliber models from the airsoft world are also equipped with the BlowBack system.
This desire to own a blowback reinforces the desire of manufacturers to use it exclusively on popular replica military weapons. I hope there is nothing surprising - copy this to the maximum, and the rolling shutter system, recoil imitation and shutter lag will only have a positive impact on market demand.

The magazine is made of high-strength metal. And for more detailed information about this product, we suggest watching a video review of the Umarex P.08 air pistol.
The WALTHER CP88 pneumatic gun is a complete copy of the regular WALTHER P88 firearm and has excellent German quality. To fire such a pistol, lead bullets of 4.5 mm in diameter are used, which at the muzzle end reach a maximum speed of 120 m/s. Such bullets are placed in an 8-round drum, and the safety of such pneumatics is ensured by two fuses.

Air gun CLT-1911 from Glatcher
The Gletcher CLT-1911 modification is the most popular version in the corresponding segment. Judging by customer reviews, this is due to several factors. Firstly, the air pistol has the maximum resemblance to the combat original. It has identical overall dimensions to the Colt, as well as repetition of the smallest details, including the presence of a pair of fuses. Secondly, there is a realistic simulation of firing. After the salvo, the bolt rolls back, guaranteeing a unique sensation. The recoil force is comparable to the performance indicator of a small-caliber analogue.
The body of the Gletcher CLT-1911 model is made of a reliable metal alloy and can be disassembled into several parts. The feeling of the weight of the weapon in the palm of your hand gives additional euphoria while shooting. The pistol uses a single-fire system after cocking the hammer. Metal balls are used as ammunition.
