MP-654K pneumatic pistol: civilian copy of the Makarov pistol

MP-654K - Makarov's air pistol, owes its appearance primarily to the reduction in the supply of weapons to the Armed Forces and the Ministry of Internal Affairs. IzhMech warehouses have accumulated a large number of PMs ready for shipment, which suddenly became of no use to anyone. By decision of the plant management, it was decided to process some of them into gas and service versions. Another part was decided to be “repurposed” into pneumatic models. The growing popularity of shooting with hand-held pneumatic weapons has also picked up this pistol. Just three years after its appearance, foreign tabloids such as Visier and IWM praised the work of IzhMech designers very highly, stating:

This pistol delivers truly pagan shooting pleasure. You feel real weapon steel, you feel the weapon in your hands, not a piece of plastic.

In this section you can.

Pneumatic design and diagram

The design of the MP 654K air pistol, as well as its further modification MP 654K 33, is not much different from its combat brother. For example, the trigger mechanism is identical to the combat model, except for the absence of a bolt group. The difference is that the trigger now hits not the cartridge firing pin, piercing the primer, but the valve, which releases a small amount of gas, sufficient to push the bullet out of the barrel at a speed of 110-130 meters per second.

The store has also undergone significant changes. The body of the standard magazine was slightly expanded to accommodate a gas cylinder and a container for BB balls. There are 13 such balls placed in it.

The safety of handling weapons rests on the standard fuse, located in the usual place. When the pistol is transferred to the safety cock, the hammer is safely released from the combat cock (without hitting the valve), while the hammer is simultaneously intercepted by the locking protrusion of the safety. This ensures the absolute impossibility of firing.

The operating principle of the MP-654K is as follows:

  • A gas cylinder with a gas mass of 12 grams is charged into the magazine. You need to twist the cylinder until the cylinder membrane is punctured and gas penetrates to the valve.
  • The required number of explosive balls is charged
  • The magazine is inserted into the pistol and the hammer is cocked. The hammer can be cocked both by placing the hammer on the sear and by self-cocking.
  • When the trigger is pulled, the hammer hits a valve that releases a small volume of gas to expel the bullet.
  • On average, one cylinder capacity is enough for up to seventy shots.

Feedback on shooting

Now about the shooting. Shooting is carried out by self-cocking and with preliminary cocking of the hammer. The pistol has a very short rifled barrel. When shooting with bebeshkas, for which a 13-local magazine is designed, even rifling does not help, the spread of bullets is very significant. Apparently, the inaccuracy was passed on from a fellow firearm; I had a chance to use a Makarov firearm. However, if you pull out the magazine and put the bolt on delay, through the ejector window, directly into the barrel, you can load any bullet and even a dart. In this version, he hits more accurately. The topic is not for hardball, of course, but it’s a fact. The pistol has a non-adjustable rear sight, which, when hot, is tightly pressed into the receiver body and the owner of the device will be very lucky if the factory zeroing turns out to be accurate. I was unlucky; the Makarov MP-654k air pistol was pointing to the left. No matter what I did, I couldn’t move the rear sight, so I shot with adjustments. In principle, once you get used to the device, you can take stable frags at close range (15-20 meters). One cylinder is enough to shoot five magazines.

Operation and technical characteristics of Baikal MP 654k

The rules for operating the pistol are quite simple:

  • In between shots, keep the weapon on safety;
  • Upon completion of shooting lessons, it is necessary to remove the balls from the magazine, thereby releasing the feed spring;
  • Do not store weapons in a loaded state;
  • Do not completely disassemble the gun unless necessary;
  • Use only the type of balls that is prescribed in the passport for the gun;
  • Every one and a half to two thousand shots it is necessary to lubricate the trigger mechanism;

    Remember that following operating rules and proper maintenance will extend the life of the weapon.

Pneumatic Makarov pistol Umarex Ultra Blowback

The U marex Ultra has a blowback function - full movement of the bolt frame during shooting, which completely replicates the original Makarov pistol. The pistol does not have the ability to fire by self-cocking; to fire, you must cock the hammer or pull the bolt. In the future, the hammer is cocked automatically thanks to a special blowback system.

The model is made of silumin (a metal alloy) with a black coating, which makes the gun durable and reliable. The handles are made of plastic. The target firing range of this model is 15-20 m. The magazine of the Umarex PM Ultra pistol is designed for seventeen charges, steel balls of 4.5 mm caliber are used.

The handle has an original latch that, when pressed, releases the magazine. The magazine is combined with a container for CO2 cartridges. The cylinder is designed for seventy shots. Flag type fuse. The trigger is made of metal. For an air pistol for recreational shooting, this model has good accuracy.

Video review of the Makarov MP 654 K air pistol

Air pistol MP-654K-20 (PM, Makarova)
As we can see, the MP 654k pistol really replicates the Makarov pistol in many ways. But the most replica of the original pistol is the Baikal MP 654k 38.

In general, the MP 654 air pistol is an excellent option for practicing shooters - the cost of weapons and ammunition, as well as maintenance, is relatively inexpensive.

Despite the large number of factory models, you always want something more powerful. In this case, the Makarov MP 654k air pistol provides ample opportunities for tuning and increasing power. How to strengthen this weapon will be shown in the following video:

Full review of MP 654, complete tuning and modification 200+m/s.

The greatest indicators for increasing the power of a shot in the MP 654k PMM (or as it goes according to the factory documentation, the MP-654K pneumatic pistol) are obtained by replacing the rifled barrel with a smooth barrel MP 654k.

Disassembly and cleaning

Even though air guns are much cleaner compared to their military counterparts, they also require maintenance. In general, disassembling and assembling Baikals of the MR series absolutely repeats the process of disassembling/assembling military analogues.

How to care for a pneumatic gun? Very simple!

Incomplete disassembly

Partial disassembly of the weapon is used for cleaning and lubrication. The MP-654K is disassembled as follows:

  1. The magazine is taken out.
  2. The trigger guard is pulled down and slightly tilted to the left side, resting against the frame.
  3. The bolt casing is retracted back, and with a lift at the rearmost point, it moves forward along the barrel.
  4. The return spring is removed.

Complete disassembly

It is recommended to completely disassemble the weapon only in extreme cases related to repair or replacement of parts. Produced in the following order:

  1. The magazine is removed.
  2. The trigger guard is pulled down similarly to the PM and rests against the frame.
  3. The bolt casing is retracted, and with a lift to remove it from the guides, it moves forward along the barrel.
  4. The trigger is carefully removed from the cocking action by pressing the trigger while holding the trigger with your finger.
  5. The universal key lifts the sear spring and separates it from the bolt stop.
  6. The sear is rotated until the protrusions on it coincide with the slots on the frame and removed from the frame.
  7. The bolt stop is removed by pulling it upward.
  8. The screw that secures the cheeks of the handle is unscrewed, separating the cheeks from the frame.
  9. The mainspring lock moves, then it is removed from the barrel.
  10. The trigger rotates forward until the grooves align with the frame and is removed upward.
  11. We take out the trigger rod with an offset to the right to separate it from the trigger.
  12. We remove the trigger moving forward.
  13. We tightly wrap the barrel with several rolls of cloth adhesive tape.
  14. Using pliers, we tear the barrel off the thread with a sharp movement and unscrew it.

In both cases, assembly is performed in the reverse order. Before assembly, it is recommended to lubricate all moving parts with liquid gun oil.

Repair and replacement of parts

Repairs and replacement of parts are carried out only after complete disassembly of the weapon. At the same time, it is highly recommended not to use handicraft or low quality parts. It is advisable to purchase replacement parts from official product dealers, as well as carry out repair work.

Power increase

Increasing shot power is achieved in the following ways:

  1. Installing a bushing to further seal the valve body blocks some of the gas from escaping when fired, adding speed to the ball's flight. The volume of the gunshot sound is also reduced.
  2. Installing a hardened impact rod ensures precise contact with the valve, which allows it to release the required portion of compressed gas for firing.
  3. Refinement of the valve spring by grinding ensures complete sealing of the valve plug, eliminating the possibility of gas leakage.
  4. Installing a counterbored valve, from where gas enters the chamber, provides a larger volume of gas, which gives a significant increase in shot power.
  5. Installation of a counterbored seal with an increased volume is usually installed in conjunction with a counterbored valve. Allows you to avoid loss of shot power by maintaining constant pressure in the gas chamber of the pistol.
  6. Installing a bored valve body at the top of the magazine with an additional adjustment screw ensures reliable centering of the ball relative to the barrel, which allows you to transfer greater charge force to the bullet, directing the ball exactly along the line of the barrel.
  7. Installing a fluoroplastic gasket between the barrel and the head of the magazine ensures a tight fit between them to eliminate the slightest possibility of leakage, which has a positive effect on the power of the shot.

Modifications

Air pistol MP 654K 28

This pneumatic PM is today one of the latest models in the entire line, almost completely repeating the original. In new models, the trigger is slightly heavy, but over time it develops, coming to normal values. Other PM air pistols of the Baikal series differ from this model in many ways - the presence of a “beard”, different materials for the cheeks of the handle, the presence of a swivel on the handle for a belt. MP-654K-28, also known as Makarov pneumatic, deservedly takes the place of the “golden mean” among the entire line.

Air pistol MP 654k 32

This pistol is a complete copy of the PM and IZH pistols. The frame of the weapon, like that of its combat counterpart, is made by milling weapon steel. It is distinguished by handle cheeks made of bakelite, an authentic barrel delay lever is used (unfortunately, only a lever is available), and a hidden cylinder pressure screw is installed. Unfortunately, this model is no longer produced.

Control Panel

Now seriously. The controls of the Makarov MP-654k air pistol are located on the left side - these are the bolt stop lever and a two-position safety. Our gunsmith designers do not indulge left-handed people. The only plastic part that can be broken is the handle pad. The magazine is removed just like a firearm, in my opinion it’s terribly inconvenient, and not an option at all with gloves.

Advantages and disadvantages

The general list of advantages and disadvantages of “Baikal” looks like this:

High level of copying of appearance and main components from a combat analogue

High-strength weapon-grade steel body

Possibility of using gas cartridges from any manufacturer

The ability to completely remake the weapon, which allows you to increase power by eliminating various gas leakage points

Poor build quality, causing actual shot power to suffer

Low accuracy

A stock rifled barrel (not very suitable for firing explosive balls due to the loss of a certain amount of gas during firing)

Lack of blowback (shutter return), that is, a shot from a weapon is not completely simulated

Defense potential

The MP-654 air pistol in its factory version is absolutely not suitable as a self-defense weapon. The low power and small caliber of the ball cannot cause any serious damage, and in winter, when the attacker is likely to be wearing a jacket or some other warm clothing, it will only provoke them. And remembering the legislative framework, you can also get yourself into trouble related to the legislation.

Feedback on shooting

User reviews in this regard are almost unanimous - at a distance of ten to fifteen meters, the pistol allows you to confidently hit a target of almost any size. The gun works reliably and does not jam when used correctly, which confirms the quality guarantee from the manufacturer.

No gun permit required

According to Article 20, Part 8 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation, liability for storing and carrying pneumatic weapons with a power of up to 7.5 Joules is not provided. But according to the same part of the law, it is prohibited for persons under 18 years of age to carry weapons. In this case, law enforcement officials have the right to confiscate the weapon. The Law also establishes a ban on the use of pneumatic weapons as a weapon of self-defense; pneumatic weapons are permitted only for hunting and sporting purposes; use in this capacity is allowed only after reaching 18 years of age. Follow the link for an analysis of the situations in which you need a permit for an air gun.

Defense potential

I myself owned the MP-654k for four years, although I didn’t buy it, but took it away from hooligans who decided to take money from me. By the way, the pistol is most suitable for this, because it is an absolute copy of its firearm brother; according to some sources, the MP-654k is produced from rejected PM parts, and if you do not look into the barrel (the 4.5 caliber is clearly different from the 9 mm caliber), then it is indistinguishable from the outside . Don’t think that I’m encouraging you to take a Makarov MP-654k air pistol and go rob passers-by, I’m just stating the fact of similarity with the PM. This barrel can also be used as a self-defense weapon. In this case, there is no need to shoot from it, but you need to bring down this device, with all proletarian consciousness, on the head of the adversary, on the honor of your encroacher and a concussion, if there is one, is guaranteed for the bastard. Still, 730 grams of iron is not a waste of time.
