Experienced carrier-based fighter-bomber Sepecat Jaguar M. France
The British-French fighter-bomber Sepecat Jaguar was supposed to be the means that would increase the power of carrier-based aircraft of the French Navy. However, tests carried out on board the aircraft carrier Clemenceau revealed serious shortcomings of the Jaguar as a carrier-based aircraft.
Background
France and the UK - fierce competitors in the export market and at the same time close partner countries - have joined forces in the development and production of the Jaguar combat aircraft. The Sepecat consortium (Société Européene de Production de l'Avion d'Ecole de Combat et d'Appui Tactique - European company for the creation of combat training and close support aircraft) was supposed to produce eight Jaguar prototypes in five different versions for the two countries . The first French prototype, E01 (E - Ecole; training version), made its maiden flight on September 8, 1968. By May 1969, the second two-seat prototype E02 and single-seat prototypes A03 and A04 (A - Appui Tactique; direct support) had been created for France. To date, the fifth prototype M05 (M - Marine; navy) has been practically forgotten. This variant was intended to perform strike missions as part of the air groups of the aircraft carriers Clemenceau and Foch and replace the outdated Dassault Étendard IV attack aircraft. Externally, it was almost indistinguishable from the Jaguar A, a strike aircraft for the French Air Force, and the most important distinguishing feature was the installation of a brake hook in the rear lower part of the fuselage and a modified and strengthened landing gear. The nose landing gear was lengthened to increase the angle of attack during takeoff, and the main landing gear now had single wheels instead of the usual twin wheels. In addition to this, the M05 prototype received a laser rangefinder in the forward fuselage.

Tests on an aircraft carrier deck simulator
The Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE), Bedford, was the only one in Europe to have a land-based aircraft carrier deck simulator, which included two catapults as part of its equipment. Between April 22 and May 1, 1970, nine catapult launches were performed to determine the minimum safe takeoff speed for all configurations, as well as 38 landings using the arresting hook. After the second stage of testing, carried out in Bedford in June 1970, things became more serious. On July 9, 1970, the head of the French Navy aviation project program, Captain 3rd Rank Yves Goupil, flew to Lorient, Brittany, where the aircraft carrier Clemenceau was located. However, the approach system's mirror indicator briefly malfunctioned, forcing Goupil to land at Lann-Bihoué airbase. A little later, the problem on the ship was resolved, and the Sepecat Jaguar M05 prototype was again able to take off from the Naval Air Station and land on the deck of the aircraft carrier without any problems. The next day, Lieutenant Commander Daniel Pierre (Lieutenant de Vaisseau Daniel Pierre) performed the first flight from an aircraft carrier catapult. By July 13, 1970, Daniel Pierre, Yves Goupil, and Breguet test pilot Jacques Gesberger had each completed twelve catapult launches and landings and 173 approaches. During testing, the takeoff weight was 9600 kg, and the landing weight was 8800 kg.

The aircraft's shortcomings become apparent
During testing on the deck of the aircraft carrier Clemenceau, the M05 prototype had not yet carried any external loads. These were added in the second phase of testing, which began again at RAE, Bedford. In October 1971, the M05 prototype returned to the USS Clemenceau in the Mediterranean. At this stage, the test program included flights of the M05 prototype with large masses: up to 12,300 kg on takeoff and 9,370 kg on landing. From October 20 to October 27, 21 takeoffs and landings and 216 approaches were performed. During the tests, a number of shortcomings were identified. For example, if one of the engines failed, a safe go-around was impossible due to insufficient power. In addition, the power of the catapult had to be increased, and the decks of aircraft carriers had to be strengthened.

Jaguar vs Super Étendard
Engineers tried to solve the problem of insufficient performance by improving the afterburner control. However, further design changes would be required for safe operation on aircraft carriers. Therefore, in January 1973, the French Navy aviation command abandoned the deck version of the Jaguar and canceled the third stage of testing on an aircraft carrier. In the same year, Dassault received a contract for serial production of the Super Étendard carrier-based attack aircraft. As for the M05 prototype, the aircraft continued to be tested in the interests of the French Air Force, and this Jaguar made its last flight on December 12, 1975. The prototype was then transferred to the French Air Force technical school, and the aircraft is now in the storerooms of the French Navy Aviation Museum in Rochefort, south of Nantes.
Ultimately, the French Navy aviation command abandoned the Jaguar M in favor of the Dassault Super Étendard, which became the basis of French carrier-based aviation
