Combat use
The first combat operation in which Soviet T-62 tanks were involved was the entry of troops of the Warsaw Pact countries into the territory of Czechoslovakia in August 1968. Things did not come to real clashes then. But the events of 1969 on the Soviet-Chinese border around Damansky Island led to the first loss. Moreover, a unit of 9 new and at that time secret Soviet combat vehicles ended up in the combat zone by accident.
One of the tanks that came to the aid of the attacked Soviet border guards was hit by Chinese grenade launchers, and its crew was killed. During the subsequent battle, this T-62 went under the ice of the Ussuri River, but later the Chinese managed to raise the tank and transport it to their shore. Subsequently, this trophy was exhibited at the Military Revolutionary Museum in Beijing, where it is still located.
The participation of the T-62 in the Arab-Israeli Yom Kippur War of 1973 turned out to be very active. These vehicles were in large quantities in service with the armies of Syria and Egypt, and in conditions of approximately equal balance of tank forces of the warring parties they were able to achieve some advantage in the Sinai Peninsula, having suffered serious losses in the Golan Heights.
Subsequently, the Syrian army was able to inflict noticeable damage on the Israeli Pattons and Centurions in the Lebanese conflict of 1976-1982, but the losses of the T-62 were also significant. In addition, Israel was able to restore about 70 T-62s shot down and captured in 1973, and then modernized them and included them in their army under the name “Tyrant”.
T-62 tanks were used by the Soviet Army in Afghanistan. There this machine proved itself to be generally successful. However, the enemy's use of increasingly sophisticated anti-tank weapons revealed the vulnerability of armored vehicles. To protect the T-62 from shaped charges, metal shields were installed on the turrets, the side and chassis were covered with screens made of reinforced rubber, and the armor of the frontal part of the hull was strengthened. The complex of these measures was reflected in two modernizations of the tank, which made it possible to avoid noticeable losses.
T-62 tanks were used in most armed conflicts that broke out on the territory of the former USSR after its collapse. Russian troops used these vehicles during the first and second military campaigns in Chechnya, as well as during the war with Georgia in 2008. Ukrainian troops used modernized T-62s in combat operations in the Donbass.
Use in the Iraqi Army
Soviet T-62 tanks were actively and massively used in combat by the Iraqi army starting in 1980. By that time, Iraq had about 700 tanks of this type in service. During the Iran-Iraq War, their main opponents were American M60 tanks and British Chieftains.
In January 1981, the largest tank battle of this war took place in the Kharkhi Valley near the city of Susengerd in the Iranian border province of Khuzestan. About 300 tanks from each side took part in it. Iraqi T-62s managed to lure the most modern Iranian tanks into a prepared trap and destroy more than 200 of them, losing about 40 vehicles. This battle demonstrated the successful penetration of the Chieftain's armor by shells from the Soviet 115 mm tank gun.
Destroyed Iraqi T-62 in Kuwait
By the time Iraqi troops invaded Kuwait and Operation Desert Storm, carried out mainly by the US armed forces with the support of large contingents of troops from other Western countries, the T-62s were already very outdated compared to not only the latest Western tanks, but also the Iraqi T -72. There were no major tank battles in this war, since a significant part of the Iraqi tanks were destroyed by air strikes, and the remaining Iraqi tanks in Kuwait managed to either successfully retreat deep into Iraq, or surrender to the International Forces almost without conflict.
Crew:
- Crew commander (radio operator);
- Gunner;
- Driver mechanic;
- Charging.
Learning additional skills for the crew:
Standard crew for Active Actions:
1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
For the first slot, we teach all crew members, except the commander, the “ Repair” , and for the commander the “ Sixth Sense” skill - the “Repair” skill speeds up the repair of damaged modules, and the “Sixth Sense” will allow you to determine whether his tank has been detected by the enemy. Also, all crew members need to learn the additional skill “ Combat Brotherhood” , which will improve the level of proficiency in the specialty - be sure to learn it all at once, preferably used in the second or third slot.
- the Eagle Eye skill , which increases the viewing range.
- For the gunner we learn the skill “ Smooth turret rotation” , which reduces the spread when turning the turret; and the Sniper , which increases the chances of causing damage to modules and crew members.
- For the driver mechanic, we learn the “ Smooth Move” , which reduces the dispersion of the gun in motion; and the Off-Road King , which reduces drag on soft to medium ground when driving.
- For the loader, we learn the skill “Non-contact ammo rack ,” which increases the strength of the ammo rack; and the skill “Desperate” , which reduces the reload time when less than 10% strength remains.
Studying skills and abilities of crew members for defense:

- For the loader, we learn the skill “Non-contact ammo rack ,” which increases the strength of the ammo rack; and the skill “Desperate” , which reduces the reload time when less than 10% strength remains.
Remodeling of the T-62A tank
Recently, remodeling has been gaining popularity in World of Tanks, that is, making changes to a tank model, up to its complete redesign. On the official forum of the game, as well as on the websites of WOT partners, you can find mods for the T-62A, which will allow you to both improve the appearance of your car, down to the smallest details of the attachments, and replace it with something more modern: from T-72 to T-90. Unfortunately, partners and opponents in the game will not see these changes, since the changes are saved only on the client's computer, and not on the game server.
Equipment, gear and ammunition:
List of equipment that can be installed on the T-62A:

The fire extinguisher can be replaced with Lend-Lease oil , which will increase engine power by 5% . For tournaments or when there are a lot of credits, you can replace the fire extinguisher with Extra Ration 10% to all skills .
Ammunition:
100 mm U-8TS gun we’ll take most of the sub-caliber shells, but against more armored opponents it’s worth taking a few cumulative premium shells, which will make the game easier. High-explosive fragmentation shells will be useful for us to shoot down the capture of the base and finish off opponents with a small margin of safety. The total ammunition load is 50
shells.

Thank you for your feedback!
The comprehensive rebalance included many new features that we made available for testing. Some of our hypotheses have been confirmed, while other concepts still require further development.
However, thanks to the tests and your active participation, we now have the necessary data to successfully continue our research and development of innovations within the framework of the new balance. As soon as we rethink and update the concepts of such innovations, you will definitely have the opportunity to check them out for yourself on the Sandbox server. We appreciate your help!
On the Sandbox server, we share our ideas and hypotheses with players, and also collect their feedback on ongoing experiments, gameplay and balance settings. This platform is intended to make decisions together with the tank community. Testing any innovations on the Sandbox server does NOT mean that they will be introduced into the game.
More detailed information about the technique:
The T-62A battle tank is similar in characteristics to its predecessor T-54, but the armor and dynamics have deteriorated significantly, which is why the survivability of the combat vehicle has decreased. The weapon has a high rate of fire, excellent accuracy and aiming speed, which makes it possible to fire from long distances. However, it must be remembered that sub-caliber projectiles lose penetration as their range increases. The hull armor is quite weak, but the frontal armor of the turret is capable of receiving frequent ricochets and cannot be penetrated. The low downward angle of the gun does not allow effective shooting in folds of the terrain.
As a result: The T-62A tank is an aggressive combat unit, which, as before, has to take part in team play with other tanks. You can also try to shoot down the track of a heavy tank, and while it is reloading, fire a couple of shots.
Historical reference
The USSR needed to update its tank models, so the decision was made to create a new medium tank with a smoothbore gun. Two different prototypes were competing for the role of the new tank.
The first of them was Object 430, created at the Kharkov Design Bureau under the leadership of Alexander Morozov.
Object 140 was developed in Nizhny Tagil under the leadership of Leonid Kartsev.
In 1957, after testing, Object 140 revealed serious shortcomings. The chief designer himself admitted that the tank turned out to be very difficult to produce, so this project was closed.
Things were going better in Kharkov; the Object 430 had better armor than its predecessors. The tests also revealed problems in the tank’s engine and transmission. But the problem was solvable. Also, at the time of development, the situation became aggravated by the fact that the British created a new, extremely powerful 105-mm tank gun. The main task was to surpass the potential enemy. After modifications, installation of a 115 mm gun and field testing, the tank was adopted by the USSR on January 9, 1962. The tank was mass-produced from 1961 to 1962, 25 models were produced, then the project was canceled due to new prototypes.
