Review of the Mauser Gletcher M712 air pistol

History of the pistol

The idea of developing a Mauser-based air pistol came to the mind of an American engineer back in the early 2000s. However, at that time the classic models were not in great demand, so they decided to postpone it until 2015. As soon as the pistol was born, it unexpectedly created a sensation among all airgun lovers. Connoisseurs praised not only the almost perfectly recreated appearance of the Mauser, but also the “Blowback” system, which allows you to feel that you are shooting a real German weapon.

Over the next few years, the Americans were developing modified Glacier models, which managed to overtake the original model in sales. However, most beginners still prefer to purchase a simpler option - cheap and beautiful. In addition, the M712 model is actively purchased by Russian collectors of exhibits on the theme of the Great Patriotic War. It is unlikely that any of these people will refuse to have at home, in addition to the Thompson, the famous German Mauser, used mainly by fascist officers.

Technical characteristics of Mauser Gletcher M712

Even though most people buy a Mauser model solely for its appearance, it is still worth knowing about the technical characteristics of the weapon, which represent its combat capabilities. You can find this information in the weapons passport, which comes in a box with pneumatics in any configuration. Here is the information you can find there:

CharacteristicParameter
Caliber4.5 mm
Barrel length215 mm
Barrel typesmoothbore
Ammunition typeBB balls
Magazine capacity19 (18+1)
Shot speedup to 110 m/s
Rate of fire85 rounds per minute
Power3 J
Aimfront sight, adjustable rear sight
Energy sourcegas cylinder
Weight1400 grams

At first glance, the technical characteristics seem very modest. However, do not forget that the main purpose of the weapon is recreational and training shooting. Many also use a pistol as a secondary weapon in military tactical games. Since the muzzle energy does not exceed 3 J, and the maximum bullet speed is 100 m/s, shooting at people carries a low risk of injury. The only drawback to using the Mauser in airsoft is that the pistol is virtually unmodifiable.

However, even an inexperienced gunsmith will pay attention to the fairly high rate of fire in the technical characteristics. This is achieved through the use of an automatic system for feeding a cartridge into the barrel, as well as the presence of 19 cartridges in the magazine at once. By the way, the pistol can fire both burst and single cartridges. For adjustment, there is a special switch on the barrel that sets a delay of several seconds before the next shot.

What are you doing, people! Aren't our reviews the best champagne?

Very good thing

I’ve already seen this somewhere... And if it’s on topic, thank you.

In existence, there was a tendency towards a deterioration in living conditions, or, to put it simply, things were worse than ever.

Things are never as good with money as they are bad without them. Useful Household Tips: The garbage can should be taken out when the smell from it becomes unbearable. To prevent the milk from running away, tie the cow tightly. The shoes will last much longer if you don’t buy new ones. A boiling kettle will whistle louder if you put someone from your household on it... If I don’t give a damn, I’ll splash it. If you looked in the mirror but didn’t find anyone there, you are irresistible! As long as I live, I can’t understand two things: where the dust comes from and where the money goes.

Thanks for the information on the topic. Don't pay attention to bots. Just rub them in and that's it.

I must tell you this is a fallacy.

Design

In terms of pistol design, American engineers once again exceeded all possible expectations. Despite the fact that the pistol positions itself as a pneumatic one, it has almost all the systems that existed in the combat model. Already the automatic fire mode goes well with the “Blowback” system (during shooting the shutter is pulled back, as in military weapons). It is thanks to this feature that it becomes almost impossible to distinguish a pneumatic model from a military model.

Also of great importance is the fact that the pistol is made entirely of metal (except for the wooden handle). Most people, when looking for the difference between a firearm model and its copy, first of all pay attention to this nuance. If you pick up a pneumatic and a combat Glock, you will immediately understand which one is real. But this trick will not work with a Mauser, since it completely copies the appearance of the model (except that the steel used in the production process is of higher quality).

Well, the last feature that deserves attention is the fact that the rear sight of the pistol is adjustable. To do this, there are two metal drums on the gun that regulate the position of the bar horizontally and vertically. Each displacement of the rear sight by 0.5 mm is accompanied by a characteristic click. Thanks to such a system, it is possible to zero the weapon at long distances in order to conduct accurate shooting from a distance (the combat analogue also had this capability).

About the combat prototype

The first semi-automatic pistol to be mass-produced was the Borchardt pistol (model 1903 ). Despite its good characteristics, its design was far from perfect, and it did not receive mass distribution. The first truly mass-produced semi-automatic pistol is the legendary Mauser C96, the production of which began at the Oberndorf plant, owned by the brothers Wilhelm and Paul Mauser, in 1896.

The prototype of the C96 pistol was developed in 1895. The following year, its mass production began, which continued in Germany until 1939.

During this period, more than a million pistols were produced in a variety of modifications (only in the first 15 years from the start of its production, the number of its modifications exceeded two dozen). Various modifications of the pistol differed in barrel length, number of rifling, magazine capacity and shape, shape of the handle, trigger, triggers and safeties. However, the basis of its design remained unchanged.

It is not possible to establish the exact number of these modifications and their characteristic features, since the archives of the Mauser company were destroyed by the Allied forces during the Second World War.

The name of the pistol “ Mauser C96 ” (in Russian transcription Mauser K96 ) comes from the abbreviation of the word “ Construktion ” and the last digits of the year its production began – “18 96 ”. Due to the specific shape of the handle, the C96 received the nickname “Broomhandle” (broom handle).

The classic and most popular modification of the C96 is the 1912 model (A). Its popularity is associated with the best ballistics of all Mauser modifications and the high reliability (survivability) of the pistol. Its distinctive features: a barrel with 6 grooves, a fixed magazine for 10 rounds in front of the trigger guard (loaded with rifle cartridges, a sector sight marked at a distance from 50 to 100 m, a specific form of safety, a wooden holster - butt, borrowed from a Borchardt pistol .

Loading a pistol from a rifle clip (a pistol with a bolt stop)

It should be noted that the marking of a sector sight up to a range of 1000 m is nothing more than a publicity stunt. Even with a holster fastened at such a range, the horizontal dispersion did not exceed 4 m, and the vertical dispersion did not exceed 5 m. However, at a distance of 100 m, the bullets fell into a circle with a diameter of 30 cm!

It is this model that appears in domestic films about the events of the October Revolution and the Civil War.

Typically, this pistol can be seen hanging on its side in a wooden holster in these films. However, the K96 package included a special leather case in which a wooden holster was inserted. This case had special pockets for a spare magazine and cleaning.

Other modifications of the C96 9 mm pistol that are most famous in the arms world are:

— model 1916 (“Red Nine”)

— police model 1921 with a shortened barrel (“Bolo”);

- automatic pistol model 712 1932 with a fire switch (Mauser "Schnellfeuer").

Model 1916 (B) was manufactured in 1916 by order of the Prussian army and was a modification of the pistol chambered for 9 mm Parabellum. Externally, it was distinguished by other modifications by the large red number “9” on the handle (this is what is associated with the second name of this model - “Red Nine”) and a sector sight marked up to 500 m.

Model 1921 (B) was developed for the police and its external features are a shortened barrel and a smaller handle. In addition, his holster was not wooden, but leather.

Most of the pistols of this modification, in accordance with the Rapala Treaty (1922) on mutual assistance and military-technical cooperation between the USSR and Germany, were exported to the Soviet Union. This is precisely what the name “Bolo” (derived from the word “Bolshevik”) is associated with.

Mauser M 712 (G). The origins of this model stem from the restrictions placed on Germany following its defeat in World War I by the Treaty of Versailles (1919).

Somebody’s light hand in the weapons literature and, of course, on the World Wide Web, is the statement about “the direct ban of the Treaty of Versailles on the production of military pistols with a caliber of more than 8 mm and with a barrel length of more than 98 mm” and that “Germany was allowed only to improve the weapons of the First World War and to design the types of weapons that were in service back in 1918.” However, there is nothing like this in the text of the Versailles Peace Treaty of 1919. Restrictions regarding handguns can only be found in Article 170 of the Treaty:

“The importation of weapons, equipment and military material of any kind into Germany will be strictly prohibited.

The same will apply to the production and export of weapons, equipment and military material of any kind to foreign countries.”

As a result of these restrictions, instead of the original German-made Mausers, their copies appeared on the arms market, the production of which was established in other countries, including Spain.

The highest quality copies of the Mauser pistol were produced by Unceta & Co. under the Astra brand.

Initially, these pistols were structurally identical to German-made pistols. However, later Spanish gunsmiths began to make changes to the design of the Mauser, improving its characteristics. First of all, this is due to the development of detachable magazines and the appearance of pistols that allow burst firing with a “single/burst” fire selector (“Astra 903”).

In the 20s of the last century, Germany began to move away from the restrictions of the Treaty of Versailles. At the same time, it turned out that in one of the most promising markets in China, German-made Mausers are inferior in popularity to Spanish models with the ability to fire automatically.

As a result, the Germans took advantage of the design solutions of Spanish gunsmiths. In 1932, production of the German model of an automatic pistol began - model 712 “Schnellfeuer” (schnellfeuer - rapid-fire pistol). Essentially it was a compact submachine gun.

In automatic fire mode, at long distances, there was no question of any accurate shooting. Therefore, this model was used in such army units where a fairly powerful but compact weapon was needed. Model 712 and its modifications were used, for example, in SS reconnaissance and sabotage units, as well as by the crews of German submarines.

Currently, the demand for this kind of weapon in special forces has led to the emergence of a new class of weapon, which in the West is called Personal defense weapon (Personal self-defense weapon) or abbreviated PDW . The Mauser Schnellfeuer pistol can undoubtedly be considered the ancestor of the PDW.

Gangbanger Style ) in which the weapon is held horizontally rather than vertically is associated with this model It came from China and is due to the fact that when firing a burst from an automatic Mauser (the Chinese called it “Boxed Cannon” - a gun in a box), the greatest spread of hits was in the vertical plane. Therefore, during short-term fire contacts, the Chinese fired in a fan, holding the pistol horizontally.

Despite its advantages, the Mauser also had a number of disadvantages:

- large dimensions and weight;

— center of gravity shifted forward;

— inconvenient sighting devices;

- high-speed shooting with one hand was complicated by the tossing of the barrel during shooting (high power of the cartridge and a large distance between the butt plates of the handle and the central axis of the barrel);

- uncomfortable handle;

- difficult complete disassembly.

The use of the most advanced technology for that time, the best materials and high quality finishes in the manufacture of the Mauser led to its main drawback - the high cost and labor intensity of production . It was precisely due to its high cost that it was not in service in almost any army in the world. However, many officers purchased it at their own expense as a replacement or addition to their standard weapons. In addition, the Mauser, as a compact pistol-carbine, was very popular among hunters and travelers.

The Mauser lived a long combat life. The pistol received its baptism of fire during the Boer War (1899-1902); it was a participant in the First and Second World Wars, and many armed conflicts in different parts of the globe. During the Afghan events, it was also used by the Mujahideen.

It is not surprising that deactivated copies of the famous Mauser pistol are very popular among firearms collectors - the cost of a deactivated C96 can reach up to 4,000 US dollars, and the 712 model up to 3,000.

Advantages and disadvantages of the model

Despite the fact that the Mauser Gletcher M712 pistol is loved and desired by many, the weapon is not without its shortcomings. Of course, many of them are more than offset by advantages, of which there are also many. In addition, some disadvantages will seem insignificant to a certain person. However, pistol owners and gunsmith experts talk about them, so before purchasing, it is recommended that you read the information from the following block:

AdvantagesFlaws
Unsurpassed similarities with the combat model (both in appearance and design)Narrow focus (the weapon is not suitable for use in hunting or self-defense)
Low cost for a pistol that is often purchased for collectionHeavy weight (due to the fact that all parts except the wooden handle are made of steel)
The “blowback” system allows you to forget while shooting that you are holding a pneumatic gun in your handsCharacteristic double recoil when shooting in automatic mode (inconvenient for airsoft)
Ability to fire in automatic mode (like the combat Mauser)Almost complete lack of possibility for modifications (the model has a too old device)

However, despite all these shortcomings, weapons still continue to be in demand, especially among connoisseurs of rare samples. The thing is that a pistol is purchased mainly because of its appearance, which can be called ideal. Well, you can deal with some disadvantages yourself at home. For example, in order to increase the power of the muzzle energy and be able to use the model for hunting, it is enough to replace the gas cylinder with a more advanced one.

Equipment Mauser Gletcher M712

Pneumatics from an American manufacturer are supplied to the Russian market in three different configurations, which differ not only in price, but also in the presence of additional parts. Thanks to this variety, each buyer will be able to choose what best suits his taste. Here is a brief description of the kits and their purpose:

  1. “Basic” (8500 rubles). Standard equipment, which includes the Gletcher M712 Mauser pistol itself with a blowback system, an instruction manual with maintenance recommendations, a weapons passport with performance characteristics, as well as a warranty card for 2 years or 3 thousand shots (the buyer chooses it himself). The set is most suitable for a person who does not plan to use the Mauser very often, such as a collector.
  2. “Master” (9500 rubles). An expanded version of the standard package, which includes not only all of the above, but also several additional elements that will be extremely useful for a person who wants to improve their pneumatic shooting skills. The set contains: 10 additional compressed air cylinders, a box of shooting balls (1000 pieces) and 50 Remington shooting targets printed on a piece of paper.
  3. “Profi (11,000 rubles). The most advanced of all sets, which is most suitable for those who plan to use the Mauser for airsoft or hunting. In addition to everything that is included in the “Master” package, you will also find the following: Hamer safety glasses, a universal Stalker bag, an ASG Ultrair gas cylinder with a pre-pumping mechanism and improved performance characteristics.

Of course, only a layman would not guess that the presence of three sets at once is a well-thought-out marketing ploy from the manufacturer. However, it should be noted that this feature is very convenient, because the buyer can choose the configuration that suits him.

Disassembly of Mauser Gletcher M712

Despite the fact that the Mauser pistol has an extremely complex design, its incomplete disassembly is extremely simple:

  1. We remove the magazine with the gas cylinder and cartridges.
  2. We remove the pistol from the safety and fire a blank shot.
  3. Press the lock button and move the barrel and frame back.

After this, you can clean the barrel, lubricate parts or replace broken elements. As for complete disassembly, it is recommended to carry it out only if the gunsmith is confident in his strength. In addition, you must have the operating instructions at hand. It is also extremely important to handle small parts carefully so as not to damage the mechanisms in the process. Assembly is carried out in reverse order.

Origins of the legend

The company itself was founded about one hundred and fifty years ago. Two brothers, Wilhelm and Peter, whose father devoted almost his entire life to serving in the royal arms company, founded a company for the production of firearms.

It is interesting that the legendary Mauser itself was not invented by the founding brothers. The authorship belongs to the Federle brothers, employees of the company at that time. However, the name of the company was included in the patent, and subsequently the surname of the owners was established as the founding fathers.

Why did this air pistol become a legend? It's simple: at that time it was a revolutionary breakthrough. The characteristics of the Mauser were admirable. At that time, there was no other equally powerful pistol with such dimensions.
