Traumatic pistol IZH-79-9T “Makarych”: pros and cons

PM is well known in most foreign and post-Soviet countries. The MP 79 9TM pistol and its other traumatic variants are popular and in high demand among weapon enthusiasts and collectors, and owners of civil self-defense equipment.

It is simple and easy to use, affordable, and can be easily modified and repaired. It's no surprise that he became a true legend.

MP 79 9TM

Produced by the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant based on the gas Izh-79-8. The MP 79 9TM pistol differs from it in the presence of three special protrusions of reduced size, which, according to the manufacturer, allow it to obtain greater power when firing standard 50J cartridges (Figure 1).

Technically, the MP 79 9TM traumatic pistol is very similar to the combat version:

  1. Automation works based on the use of blowback recoil;
  2. The return spring is located around the barrel rigidly fixed to the frame;
  3. Double-action hammer-type trigger with safety cock;
  4. The safety lever is located on the left side on the back of the bolt-casing - when turned on, it safely releases the trigger, blocking the firing pin, sear and bolt.

Figure 1. External features of the injury
The MP 79 9TM 9mm barrel deserves special attention. It is made of steel and has three depressed protrusions-obstacles in the channel. They develop muzzle energy when firing cartridges of 50J to 70J. The original design excludes the possibility of firing metal bullets, but such an attempt causes deformation and destruction of the specimen.

Pistol MP-80-13T

Another representative of the Makarych family is the MP-80-13T pistol. It is also called one of the modifications of the MP-79-9TM pistol. The new product differs in that the cast bolt is almost the same in thickness as the bolt of a combat PM. The MP-80-13T is designed for 45 Rubber cartridges. A large caliber increases the impact characteristics of a pistol, while the likelihood of a penetrating wound does not increase, but, on the contrary, decreases. The increase in caliber entailed a number of changes. The designers had to reduce the thickness of the frame walls and completely redesign the trigger pull.

At the moment, the protrusions in the barrel are being welded. It is known that such protrusions can tear a rubber bullet or completely block the barrel. The developers took into account the mistakes of past models and plan to begin production of barrels with pressed lugs. Among themselves, fans call the model MP-80-13T Makarov 45 caliber. The increased diameter of the trunk means that its walls are not as thick as those of its predecessors. This gives reason to doubt the reliability of the pistol, especially considering that the muzzle energy when firing 45 Rubber cartridges is 90 J.

If the automation and structure of the trigger mechanism wandered from model to model without changing, then the sighting device on the MP-80 is more functional, as it is adjustable in the horizontal plane. Unfortunately, the manufacturer has taken a step back in terms of magazine capacity. The clip holds only 6 rounds.

Advantages and disadvantages of the model

If you do not take into account some nuances, then this model can be called conditionally reliable. Ease of repair is a characteristic feature of all Makarychs, and many parts are interchangeable. The dimensions of the pistol have remained virtually unchanged. It has always been rated as a compact weapon that can be carried concealed.

The pistol is not without its shortcomings. First of all, this is a small number of cartridges in the magazine. It so happened that all models that copy real combat models are involuntarily compared with prototypes. Compared to combat PM pistols, MP pistols have relatively low build quality. The availability of spare parts has always been emphasized as a positive quality of Makarych’s injuries, but not all parts are suitable from the combat PM. Welded-type protrusions from the use of 13 mm caliber cartridges cause cracks in the barrel. The increased diameter caused a decrease in the thickness of the chamber wall. This often leads to swelling and ruptures.

Characteristics

The caliber of cartridges used is 45 Rubber. Sleeve dimensions – 13 mm x 25 mm. The length, width and height of the weapon are respectively 162 mm, 30 mm and 127 mm. At the same time, the barrel became heavier by 100 g. Now its weight without cartridges was 730 g.

When purchasing a traumatic vehicle, the buyer will not have a choice problem, since one presented model replaced another. However, if you give preference to the secondary market, then you should take into account all the characteristics. A legal pistol must have a passport, in accordance with which the transaction is completed and the subsequent registration of the barrel is carried out.

History of the development of the MP 79 9TM pistol

Initially, the model was planned as a non-lethal firearm of limited destruction on the basis of an existing gas model with the ability to fire rubber bullets.

In this regard, the MP 79 9TM trauma unit can boast of a colorful history of its development:

  1. Its basis was the gas Izh-79-8, which was transformed into the Izh-79-9T, launched into production in February 2004, but is no longer produced.
  2. In 2006, two more brainchildren of the Izhevsk plant came out - Izh-79-9TM and Izh-79-9TM-10, which were subsequently also discontinued.
  3. The version chambered for 9 mm began to be produced in September 2007 with a clip capacity of 8 shells and successfully replaced outdated models.
  4. The next MP-79-9TM-10 was distinguished by the presence of a two-row magazine with 10 (13) rounds.

On its basis, the MP-80-13T is produced for .45 Rubber ammunition, with a capacity of 6 units, and the service MP-471, designed for employees of private security structures.

Since its introduction into the series in 2004, the product has been modernized several times. The MP 79 9TM traumatic pistol has undergone a number of changes. It had a strengthened barrel to make it possible to fire more powerful cartridges and began to produce cast and forged bolts, like those of the Izh-79-9T.

Since the fall of 2008, it has been assembled by remaking previously released PMs.

Currently, Makarych MR 79 9TM is one of the most popular means of self-defense. It combines an affordable price for the product and ammunition. It has a simple design and a steel frame, a shutter casing, inspires confidence in its reliability and unpretentiousness in operation and is convenient for concealed carry due to its small dimensions.

Design

The traumatic versions are slightly different in design from their progenitor, the PM pistol: apart from the difference in the barrel and the modified chamber, there are no other significant changes. The automatic operation of the pistol operates on the basis of the recoil of the free bolt; the return spring is attached around a fixed barrel - exactly like a combat PM.

Assembly and disassembly is identical to PM and is familiar, perhaps, to most men in our country:

  1. We remove the magazine and check for the presence of a cartridge in the chamber;
  2. We move the trigger safety guard down and to the side;
  3. We move the bolt back and up, and then remove it from the barrel guide;
  4. We remove the spring and, on some specimens, the barrel bushing;
  5. We carry out the assembly in the reverse order.

The pistol barrel has crushed teeth - obstacles for firing a solid bullet. They are the weakest element of the design - there are often cases when, when firing reinforced or pre-reform ammunition, the barrel blew or vomited in these places. The same problems occur during active training or recreational shooting. Therefore, it makes sense to use low-power cartridges with a reduced amount of gunpowder for regular shooting, while for self-defense it is worth using the most powerful ones.

Characteristics of injury MR 79 9TM

The product has a certificate of compliance with limited-kill firearms, which are usually used for self-defense (Figure 2).

Tuning IZH-79-9T

Tuning "Makarych" is usually divided into two types - different in design, but somewhat the same.

The most common tuning of the IZH-79-9T is to give it the appearance of its more formidable “brother” - the Makarov pistol. This tuning includes replacing the pistol grip, trigger guard, and, if possible, replacing absolutely all parts of the trigger mechanism with parts from the original PM. Such tuning, in addition to giving a greater ambience and combat appearance to the weapon, also allows you to increase its service life (spare parts from real PM are noticeably of higher quality). In addition, replacing the pistol grip significantly improves ergonomics (the pistol fits in the hand like a glove). But as noted above, some parts of the pistol (for example, the barrel, bolt or frame) are quite difficult to obtain.

The second type of tuning is to increase the power of the weapon, its reliability and convenience. This can be partly solved, as mentioned above, by replacing parts with “original” ones (from PM), but there are also radical methods - such as peeling. Nailing is a slang term that refers to the manual finishing of a weapon. It should be noted that peeling, as a rule, is carried out either by gunsmith fans or by craftsmen who then resell the weapons. Be that as it may, the price of the gun after peeling will be higher. Typically, this tuning includes manual processing of the surfaces of the IZH-79-9T, the barrel, as well as its parts and mechanisms, thereby achieving the necessary shooting accuracy, structural strength and reliability of the weapon.

Flaws

  • Outdated in power (no pilling)
  • Large trigger pull and travel
  • Not ergonomic handle
  • Rudimentary sights
  • The 3-prong design sometimes tears the ball

Owner review

Owner's impressions: “Pros: my copy was converted from a combat PM; charismatic; very comfortable to wear; quite powerful; reliable as an AK-47; steel. Cons: the barrel is subject to swelling (without sealing pressure and installing a sleeve); small magazine capacity; the “beard” and the right side of the bolt were deliberately ground off at the factory, which certainly spoils the appearance. As a result: for everyday wear it’s perfect, for self-defense, in principle, too, although there are barrels that are more powerful.”

Disassembly

Partial disassembly of firearms with limited damage MP-79-9TM is carried out after the next use, regularly to clean the barrel and mechanisms from carbon deposits. Disassembly is carried out in stages:

  • Remove the magazine from the handle.
  • Remove the fuse. Check if there is a cartridge in the chamber. Pull the shutter.
  • Pull down the trigger guard and move it away from the axis.
  • Pull the bolt back to its limit position, lift it and remove it from the barrel.
  • Remove the return spring from the barrel.
  • Remove the reinforcing sleeve.

Partial disassembly of the MP-79-9TM has been completed. You need to assemble the gun in the opposite order. Complete disassembly is done as necessary, if the weapon is very dirty, or if it needs to be repaired. The new gun also needs to be disassembled, the elements cleaned of factory grease, dried, re-lubricated and reassembled.

Maintaining the serviceability of the working parts of the MP-79-9TM must be mandatory; malfunctions will lead to breakdowns and failure of the weapon.

Difference between MP 79 and MP 80

The difference between these two pistols is primarily due to the difference in calibers - 9mm RA for the MP 79 and .45 Rubber for the MP 80. We do not undertake to say that one or another caliber is better, especially in the context of the maximum permitted energy of 91 J, but we will list all the advantages and disadvantages of the calibers so that you can decide for yourself.

9mm RA

Traumatic cartridge based on .380 ACP caliber in a 9x17mm sleeve. One of the most common traumatic calibers, the mass of the bullet varies from 0.5 to 1.3 grams, and the energy of the cartridge from 20 to 130 J.

Pros:

  • Cheap ammunition;
  • Prevalence;
  • Suitable for recreational and training shooting.

Minuses:

  • Insufficient stopping power;
  • Insufficient penetrating force;
  • Instability of the loads, and as a consequence - underfeeds and other problems with reloading.

.45 Rubber

Traumatic cartridge based on the famous .45 ACP. The cartridge is larger than 9mm RA, and the bullet is heavier - on average 1-2.3 grams. But at the same time, a sample of gunpowder provides approximately the same potential energy of 20-130 J, in order to fit into the legislation.

Pros:

  • Larger bullet mass means greater stopping effect;
  • Stability of reloading, the larger cartridge almost does not stick when feeding.

Minuses:

  • Less ammunition - a standard PM magazine can hold only 6 rounds of .45 Rubber versus 8 rounds of 9mm RA;
  • High cartridge price.

Hello!
Trauma is purchased with the same permit as a smooth-bore weapon. Thus, you can purchase up to 5 units of injuries, if you don’t have anything else yet. I renewed my license after 5 years of owning a traumatum, the procedure is the same as for a smoothbore. Reply | Reply with quote | Quote 0 Roman Bardash 01/03/2017 20:56 Alexander, cool... I’m now reading articles on the Internet, they write that with the new laws, you can purchase 2 trauma guns and 3 gas pistols for a license and this is the limit, there seems to be one law for the whole country. I didn’t have a smooth one, I had a traumatic one, blue glossy paper.

Hello!
No you can not. Such self-defense weapons are purchased under a license similar to that for smooth-bore hunting weapons. Accordingly, transfer to another country (legally) is not possible. Reply | Reply with quote | Quote 0 SEVER SEVEROV 01/03/2017 21:00 How much can you buy such a PM?

I cannot say that the barrel blew after using 91 J cartridges, because...
I shot different cartridges, but mainly with the maximum energy that were on sale at that time. The process of “inflating” itself was unnoticeable and painless for me and the weapon. Just at one moment I decided to remove the barrel, but it couldn’t be removed even with force, so I decided not to disturb it and that’s all. The pistol shoots quite well for “its class”, I repeat that there were no problems with it. Welded “teeth” and forged bolts are not common, you have to look for them. Thank you for your interest. Good luck! I do not recommend “dentistry”!!!!
During re-registration or renewal there may be no problems, but (forbid....) after application, during a criminal examination, depending on the consequences, there will definitely be. Of course, welded “teeth” are better.. When I take a weapon with me, I equip 91J, and for training 70-80J is enough (I use Fortuna Standard).
All the same, the trunk is not the same as the trunk, as they say, “even an old woman can get screwed,” it’s better not to strain the trunk again (unnecessarily). 0 Huntehippi 09/03/2018 11:02 Greetings to all, friends! Please tell me where, or rather, recommend a good store with optical sights. I would like to find a store where there is an assortment and something to choose from. Otherwise, you go to one, you look, you look, you look and it’s not in stock or very sparingly, there’s not even anything to choose from. Is there any store where you purchased optics, please advise?
