Pistol OTs-21 Malysh cartridge caliber 9 mm. Device
OTs-21 “Malysh” is a Russian self-loading small-sized pistol, developed by order of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. It was developed at TsKIB SOO by Yuri Ivanovich Berezin in the mid-90s. The designer used a 9-mm PM cartridge as ammunition - despite this, the dimensions of the OTs-21 are quite comparable to the 6.35 mm TK.
In addition, the “Baby” has no protruding parts, and its width is only 2 centimeters. This was achieved by eliminating the safety devices and making the trigger, front sight and rear sight hidden. The Malysh’s automatic system works due to the recoil of the free bolt, the center of mass of which is located noticeably closer to the handle than, for example, that of the PM and, as a result, the overturning moment when firing is not so significant.
Ammunition is fed from a single-stack, 5-round box magazine. Like most other types of domestic small arms, the “Malysh” is easy to use, and its partial disassembly is carried out without the use of tools. The minimum guaranteed service life of a pistol is one and a half thousand shots.
Despite the fact that the design of the “Malysh” does not have a safety lock, TsKIB specialists guarantee the owner safety when using the weapon. Safety in handling is achieved by the presence of only a self-cocking trigger mechanism with a hidden trigger and a relatively large trigger force (6 kg). This way, accidentally pressing the trigger should not result in a shot, and the trigger will not get caught in the folds of clothing.
The Malysh's sights are simple - a rear sight and a front sight inside a shallow groove on the top of the bolt. As for accuracy, when shooting at a distance of 10 m, the holes fit into a circle with a diameter of six centimeters. According to Yu.I. Berezina, at a distance of 25 m the pistol also shows good results. However, such weapons are almost never used at distances over 10 m. In the standard version the pistol body is oxidized, in the gift version it is nickel-plated.
The dimensions of the OTs-21 allow you to carry a weapon anywhere and any way: in the pockets of trousers or jackets, a handbag or a small holster. The “Kid” can only be discovered through a thorough search. Perhaps, of all the samples of pistols of this type, this is the most successful - both in its design and in terms of minimum dimensions.
As for the latter, it is enough to compare the width of the casing-shutter of the “Malysh” and the famous PM - with the same length and diameter of the cartridges for the “Malysh”, this size is 4 mm smaller (20 mm versus 25 for the PM). All these qualities, combined with a large caliber and constant readiness to fire, attracted the attention of the special forces of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs to the OTs-21.
To arm employees of private security structures, as well as organizations with special statutory tasks, the OTs-21S pistol is produced. The difference from the OTs-21 lies in the ammunition used - the OTs-21S uses a 9x17 K mm cartridge (everything else, including weight and overall dimensions, is the same).
Options and modifications
OTs-21 “Malysh” is a variant chambered for the 9×18 mm PM cartridge.
OTs-21S - service version chambered for 9×17 mm K cartridge.
OTs-26 "Baby" - a variant chambered for 5.45x18 mm.
Revolvers
However, one of the interesting trends of recent times is the revival of revolvers. As a rule, all revolver models existing in Russia today were developed for the Ministry of Internal Affairs or other special services. It is quite difficult to understand this hobby; moreover, revolvers have never been able to win their place in the sun and are not popular. Nevertheless, the number of models developed and the short period of time in which they were created are simply amazing. Of course, one cannot completely deny some of the advantages of revolvers.
One of them is the highest reliability, the second is the possibility of instant actuation. A revolver is a one-handed weapon, which is important for short combat encounters. As statistics show, fire contacts in modern conditions are carried out at short distances, from point-blank shooting to distances of 10-15 meters. The fire contact time is a few seconds, during which they manage to fire from two to five bullets. So here the combat capabilities of the weapon look quite satisfactory.
Moreover, revolvers can use special ammunition, the use of which in pistols is either difficult or simply impossible. Such weapons are better suited than others, for example, in hostage situations. It is not surprising that some foreign special forces still use revolvers in such situations. For example, French revolvers.
In Russia, revolvers of the Nagan system were deservedly popular in special forces due to their high reliability and accuracy. Moreover, the high quality of revolvers led to the fact that in Russia self-loading pistols for quite a long time could not adequately compete with a revolver; they mainly used foreign models and even purchased them in large quantities.
A domestic self-loading pistol actually appeared in the army only in 1933 - this is the famous TT, although, of course, before that there was a successful development by Korovin’s SA, but he developed his TK as a civilian weapon. Moreover, even after the TT was adopted for service, the production of revolvers actively continued almost until the middle of the war, and Nagant revolvers can still be found in security service.
Moreover, already in our time there were ideas to revive their production as weapons for private security guards. In Russia, the problem of revolvers was aggravated by the lack of special revolver ammunition that has a rimmed case. Therefore, standard 9x18 PM pistol cartridges were used. The problem with these ammunition is that the classic scheme for extracting spent cartridges does not fit well with them.
The famous Nagan system revolver with a service holster.
Therefore, as a rule, in domestic designs for pistol cartridges, the ammunition is combined into flat clips. This not only ensures the extraction of spent cartridges, but also speeds up the reloading of the weapon, bringing it closer to the reloading speed of a pistol. This eliminates one of the biggest problems with revolvers - the low speed of reloading the drum.

Revolver "Mateba"
Abroad, the automatic revolver "Mateba" is made according to a similar design - a very original design, which, due to the lower position of the barrel, has increased accuracy. True, there is no information yet about the use of this original weapon in special forces; obviously, this is hampered by a certain conservatism, always characteristic of people in uniform, and a negative attitude towards the very idea of automatic revolvers, although the design of the “Mateba” differs from its predecessors for the better.
Revolver "Udar"
For example, the “Udar” revolver created at TsNIITochMash had an archaic reloading scheme by removing the drum. Such a design in modern weapons is found in super-compact revolvers, but there it is justified by the desire for maximum simplicity and minimal dimensions. In the case of “Udar”, whose dimensions cannot be called small, this approach raises serious doubts.
The reason put forward was that changing the drum allows for a quick transition from non-lethal ammunition to lethal ammunition, which is convenient for police weapons. But this is a theory that is unlikely to be confirmed in practice. The advantage of “Udar” was that a range of special cartridges was developed for it, both lethal and non-lethal. However, then non-lethal ammunition somehow lost its relevance. All these shortcomings led to the fact that the revolver never became widespread.
Revolver "Dog"
There was another primitive design - the “Dog” revolver. The reloading system is the same - using a removable drum. But if “Udar” had its own extractor on the drum, then “Doga” did not have it either. However, this approach also had its own logic, if we remember that initially the “Dog” was considered as a hunting weapon and had a smooth barrel. Indeed, for a backup hunting revolver this is a completely suitable concept, and the primitiveness of the design is fully justified by its simplicity.
However, thanks to the efforts of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Dog’s hunting career was unsuccessful, and it was transferred to the category of service weapon, where all its shortcomings make the revolver uncompetitive compared to other models. Nevertheless, the idea of a large-caliber revolver is not dead, since a large caliber opens up very interesting possibilities.
