Air pocket: The Su-35 turned out to be redundant on world markets. Why?

History of the development of the Su-35 multirole fighter

The Su-35 is designed on the basis of the experimental T-10 model, being the successor to the 4th generation single-seat fighter Su-27 and the predecessor of the fifth - Su-57. “Thirty-five” belongs to the 4++ generation.

In the 90s of the last century, under the name “Su-35”, Russia presented the Su 27M to the public at world air exhibitions. However, after producing only three serial products, this program was canceled due to a lack of funds caused by the economic crisis. But at the beginning of the 2000s, the leadership of the state and the military department set the Sukhoi Design Bureau aircraft designers the task of deeper modernization of the 4th generation fighter, creating an aircraft in no way inferior to the aircraft in service with NATO countries.

Assembly of the first prototype under the working name “Su-35BM” (the last letters meant “major modernization”) began in 2006. The production of both prototypes and serial products was entrusted to the Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aviation Plant named after. Yu.A. Gagarin. The first car was completed in 2007, at the same time a static presentation of the new product took place at the MAKS-2007 air show. The multi-purpose aircraft was taken to the exhibition before the start of flight tests, which were postponed until 2008.

Takeoff of the Su-35 for demonstration to visitors of MAKS-2009

On February 19, 2008, a modernized jet fighter with turbo engines produced by NPO Saturn finally took off into the atmosphere from the airfield of the LII named after. MM. Gromov (Zhukovsky), piloted by Honored Test Pilot Sergei Bogdan, who later became a Hero of Russia.

The further path is from the start of air tests to commissioning:

  • February 20, 2008 - the Su-35 aircraft was demonstrated to the President of Russia, Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the RF Armed Forces Vladimir Putin, and First Deputy Head of Government Viktor Zubkov, who visited Zhukovsky;
  • July 7, 2008 - premiere demonstration flight, which was successful;
  • October 2, 2008 - takeoff from the aircraft factory airfield, start of testing of the second copy, which included more than 20 sorties;
  • August 18, 2009 - during MAKS 2009, the largest contract in the history of the modern Russian Federation for the purchase of combat aircraft was signed, the subject of which was the supply of 48 serial Su-35S during 2012-2015. According to military experts, by 2016, 46 units were actually transferred to the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, of which 24 entered air regiments, the rest - to flight test centers and training of military aviation personnel;
  • July 2010 - the developer announced the completion of preliminary tests, which fully confirmed compliance with the requirements for on-board equipment, speed and super-maneuverability. The fighter has been declared ready for state testing with the participation of Air Force pilots to determine its effectiveness in performing combat missions;
  • May 3, 2011 - the first air test of the Su-35S aircraft - a finished product, mass-produced;
  • 2013 - transfer of a whole batch of Su-35S to the air force.

The date of the official start of military operation is February 12, 2014, the first operator is the 23rd Fighter Aviation Regiment of the 3rd Air Force and Air Defense Command, stationed in the Khabarovsk Territory.

On April 8-11, 2015, exercises took place, according to the program of which pilots launched air-to-air missiles for the first time. Four Su-35S flew from the Far East to the Moscow region, where they took part in the aerial part of the parade on Red Square in honor of the 70th anniversary of the Victory.

"Thirty-Fives" at the Victory Parade in Moscow, May 9, 2015.

In December 2015, a second agreement was reached for the supply of 50 units to the Russian Armed Forces until 2022. As of February 2022, there are more than 60 Su-35s in the military aircraft fleet of the Russian Aerospace Forces. At least four aircraft have been and continue to be used during the operation of the Russian Armed Forces in Syria. A larger number of multi-purpose aircraft guard the Far Eastern air borders, while a smaller number guard the northern ones.

Combat vehicles not only enter service with the Russian Aerospace Forces, but are also exported. Thus, twenty-four units under a contract concluded in 2015 were sent to China.

On August 23, 2022, online media, citing the National Interest magazine, reported that the Su-35S, which entered service with the PRC Air Force, became a decisive obstacle to the Pentagon’s military operations in the skies over the Pacific Ocean aimed at supporting the proclaimed Republic of China (controls Taiwan and nearby Chinese islands). The authors of NI are worried that Beijing will launch a military operation against Taipei, during which the products of the Russian aviation industry will easily defeat both the F-16s available to the Taiwanese army and the US E-3 AWACS (early warning) aircraft if they are transferred to help the islanders .

In February 2022, an agreement was reached to send eleven aircraft to Indonesia. Subsequently, the execution of the contract was postponed under pressure from Washington on Jakarta, but the Indonesian side stated that it would settle accounts with Moscow (issue price -1.1 billion USD) and receive fighters despite anti-Russian Western sanctions.

After the successful operation of the vehicles during military operations in Syria, potential customers began to actively show interest in the aircraft. India and Malaysia are said to be the next likely buyers. It was reported that a contract worth 2 billion USD for 20 units had already been concluded with Egypt, but a refutation was received from Rosoboronexport.

It seems that in the short term, the “thirty-five” will certainly be produced for export to Asian countries, while the Su-57 multirole aircraft, serial construction of which started at KnAAZ in May 2022, will be purchased for domestic aerospace forces.

Story

2006 was the year of production of the installation batch of machines. The premiere prototype was released in 2007. A year later the first flights began. By March 2009, the new product had already made one hundred flights.

At the MAKS-2009 air forum, the Air Force signed a contract with the manufacturer for 48 aircraft until 2015. Based on the results of the contract, the country’s military department plans to conclude a similar contract until 2022.

In 2010, information appeared on the results of preliminary tests, which proved that the vehicle met the required parameters for super-maneuverability and the presence of on-board equipment.

The Ministry of Defense received the first six SU-35S as part of serial production in 2012. After 2 months, its state tests started.

Further arrivals of new items look like this:

  • 2013 - 12 pcs.;
  • 2014 – 12 pcs.

Fighter design

The design of the aircraft is very similar to the design of its predecessor, the Su-27, with a number of important differences:

  • increasing the strength of the airframe;
  • increasing the size of the vertical tail, increasing maneuverability;
  • removal of the front horizontal tail from the structure due to the installation of ultra-modern turbo engines with controlled thrust vectoring (TCV), guaranteeing the aircraft sufficient stability without PGO;
  • automation of tail control;
  • absence of a brake flap - “Drying” is slowed down by guide rudders, as well as by the ejection of a parachute placed in a compartment at the top of the fuselage.

The airframe is configured on the principle of integrating the monowing with the fuselage into a single load-bearing body. The aerodynamic properties at supersonic speeds are improved by equipping the wing with root flaps, and during takeoff and landing - with flaperons, which act as flaps.

The vertical tail is two-finned, the horizontal tail (located at the rear) is in the form of all-moving consoles, serving as an elevator for uniform deflection and roll rudders for multi-directional deflection.

The forward part of the fuselage is designed as a “semi-monocoque”, that is, with the shell of the hull reinforced with frames. In the middle part there are tank compartments carrying fuel and compartments of the central part of the wing. In the tail there is an engine compartment, a tail and a central boom. The latter gives the 35th “Sushka” an original appearance, protruding far back.

The photo clearly shows the rear part of the fuselage.

The main material for the manufacture of the body is titanium, designed to reduce the weight of the aircraft. Only elements of the antennas and covering the edges of the airframe are made from composite materials. The introduction of the latter ensured a decrease in the visibility of the aircraft for enemy radar systems. Spraying the cabin, similar to Western stealth technology, serves the same purpose.

Su-35 power plant:

  • two AL-41F1S engines, representing a “simplified” modification of engines for 5th generation aircraft, equipped with an afterburner and a shock absorber;
  • auxiliary unit (APU) with a power of 105 kW (equivalent), which serves to power the cabin with on-board air conditioning.

An important property of AL-41F aircraft engines is maintaining supersonic speed in cruising mode. This feature provides significant fuel savings, because driving at supersonic speeds does not require afterburner mode with a much higher consumption of tank contents.

The landing gear of the aircraft is tricycle, with a front strut that can be retracted against the direction of movement.

The aircraft is equipped with the latest information and control system (ICS). It includes a radar with a 900-mm phased array antenna "N035 Irbis", whose target detection range is:

  • with an effective dispersion area of 0.01 m² - up to 100 kilometers;
  • EPR 0.1 m² - 160 km;
  • EPR 1 m² - 270 km;
  • EPR 3 m² - 400 km.

The L-band radar antenna detects objects with an ESR of 0.01 m² at 130 km. Radar devices are complemented by an optical-location station and an optical-electronic integrated system (OEIS). The system is capable of simultaneously monitoring up to 30 air targets and firing at up to eight. Implemented automatic transition of the control system to combat mode.

The aircraft can be equipped with various electronic warfare (EW) systems, and, if necessary, group electronic defense devices.

Su-35 cockpit The
cockpit equipment contains 2 computers and 3 electronic displays with a multi-screen option, as well as holographic projection of indicators onto the windshield. Systems and weapons are controlled by a multi-button joystick (this is called the HOTAS concept).

All-seeing eye

If we continue the conversation about electronic filling, then one of the most effective innovations of the Su-35 is the Irbis-E phased array radar.

This is the world's most powerful fighter radar. Its peak power reaches 20,000 W (for the F-22 it is about 16,500 W).

It detects the 4th generation enemy at an unprecedented range of 400 km. And the 5th generation “invisibility” with an image intensifier (effective reflective surface) of 0.01 m2 can be seen at a distance of 90 km. The radar allows you to simultaneously track 30 air targets and fire at eight of them.

Performance characteristics

The Su-35 demonstrates the highest range, fast acceleration and excellent afterburner speed. Compared to the latest NATO aircraft, the Russian multi-role aircraft has large dimensions and weight, which does not affect its flight properties in any way.

Advantages and disadvantages of the Su-35

National Interest ranked the Su-35 first on the list of Russia's most dangerous weapons in a theoretically possible armed confrontation with the United States. NI experts concluded that it is “extremely dangerous” for almost all NATO aircraft.

They justify their conclusion:

  • a large number of long-range air-to-air missiles on board the drying aircraft;
  • option to launch missiles at supersonic speed;
  • the incomparable super-maneuverability of the device;
  • the most powerful electronic warfare means.

According to NI, the Su-35 does not pose a fatal danger only to the F-22 Raptor, which belongs to the 5th generation multi-purpose aircraft. However, based on the results of the “friendly meeting” of the Su-35 with the F-22 in the airspace near Alaska on September 11, 2022, Business Insider analyst Alex Loki came to the opposite conclusion. He emphasized the more powerful armament of the Russian vehicle and much better super-maneuverability.

Experts also had to deal with the “raptor” in Syria. As if on November 23, 2022, an F-22 approached two Su-25 attack aircraft covering Syrian government forces and began to maneuver, simulating an attack. Su-35s immediately took off from the Khmeimim base, whose quick arrival at the scene of the incident forced the Raptor to hastily retreat.

Other observers confirm that on a Russian aircraft the pilot does not need to limit himself in aerobatic maneuvers, since the risk of going into a tailspin is practically zero. Whereas this cannot be said about NATO fighters.

At the prestigious world air show in Le Bourget 2013, the Russian multi-role aircraft not only attracted everyone's attention, its demonstration in the air performed by the same S. Bogdan caused a real success. To the delight of the public, the Su-35S made a “pancake” several times - this is what is called a 360° turn virtually on the spot without reducing speed. One of the local aviation engineers, without hiding his emotions, used the expression “...just a UFO!” in relation to the car.

We know nothing about the shortcomings of the Su-35. The aircraft in service with the Russian Aerospace Forces successfully perform combat missions, but there is no information about any emergency situations during operation. The only accident involving a fighter was recorded before the acceptance of serial products: in 2009, only a Su-35-4 prototype was involved in an accident (the pilot ejected).

Aircraft accidents

According to open sources, until July 31, 2022, only one accident without casualties occurred with aircraft of this type. On April 26, 2009, during testing, the Su-35-4 prototype (tail number 904, third flight model) crashed at Dzemgi airfield. During a high-speed run using afterburner, the plane left the runway, collided with an obstacle and received significant damage. Test pilot Evgeny Frolov ejected and was not injured. The cause of the accident was a failure of the engine control system, as a result of which the afterburner was not turned off.

Basic fighter missions

Unlike fighter-bombers and attack aircraft, whose weapons are aimed primarily at the destruction of land and sea targets, multi-role fighters are created primarily for air combat, the elimination of any enemy aircraft, helicopters and other aerial devices, although they can be used for missile attacks "air-to-ground".

In Syria, the main mission of the Su-35 was to cover transport aircraft and strike combat vehicles hitting ground targets in order to prevent a repeat of the incident with the destruction of the Su-24 bomber by a Turkish fighter on November 24, 2015. The “thirty-fives” also performed reconnaissance functions.

In August 2022, electronic media reported a new incident starring “artists” from the Turkish Air Force. The command sent a group of fighters into Syrian airspace, presumably to Idlib, where government troops successfully attacked militants of the terrorist organization Tahrir al-Sham (banned in Russia). According to anonymous observers, the Turks covered a distance of more than 40 kilometers, but as soon as their radar detected the Su-35, they turned around and took the opposite direction. True, there were no official comments about the episode, which journalists explained by the Sushki carrying out a secret flight, during which they allegedly “drived away” the Turkish provocateurs by accident.

Engines

Like other units, the power plant has undergone changes in the SU-35. The technical characteristics of the engines meet the requirements for the fifth generation of aircraft.

In addition to the main jet engines of the AL-41F1S aircraft, of which it has two, the SU-35 is equipped with an additional gas turbine engine with a power of 105 kilowatts, TA14-130-35. It is intended for use in an additional power unit, allowing powering 200V and 115V AC consumers with a power of up to 30 kVA and conditioning the cabin and compartments.

Armament of the Su-35 fighter

Armament of the Su-35 - in person
the Su-35 carries on board a 30-mm GSh-30-1 air cannon with 150 rounds of ammunition for it.

There are twelve weapons hardpoints, that is, devices for attaching missiles, located on the wings and under the fuselage.

Their complete list includes the following number of air-to-air missiles:

  • medium range - up to 12 RVV-SD, up to 8 R-27ER1, up to 4 R-27EP1/ET1;
  • small radius - up to 6 R-73 (RVV-MD).

And air-to-ground:

  • anti-ship - six X-31, X-35U or two X-59M;
  • high-precision - six X-29T or X-38Mxx, five X-59MK, eight KAB-500KR(OD), three KAB-1500KR(LG);
  • unguided - six S-25s, the same number S-8s.

The maximum combat load of a multi-role fighter is 8000 kg.

How do you evaluate the Su-35? Do you share the opinion that its combat properties are higher than those of NATO aircraft? Do you have information about the aircraft that is not in the article? Share with us, leave your opinion about what you read. If you have questions, ask in the comments. We are always happy to communicate with readers.

Peculiarities

As already mentioned, the SU-35 fighter is a modernized Su-27. When landing, the aircraft is braked by deflecting the rudders to the sides.

The SU-35S aircraft has AL-41F1S engines with thrust vector control. The engine was developed by a research and production company. The engines meet the conditions that must be met for the most modern fighter aircraft. Although the plane has an old control system, it allows it to move without afterburner at speeds above the speed of sound.

The aircraft's service life is thirty years or 6,000 flight hours.
