Purpose

The design features and declared power potential of the weapon significantly expand the scope of possible use of the rifle. If you study in more detail the reviews of the owners of various models of such guns, you can come to the conclusion that through their use you can even hunt small game.

In most cases, Stoeger rifles are used for training or recreational shooting. Quite often such spring-piston type guns are used for plinking.

Equipment

The level of equipment of a rifle has a direct impact on the formation of the price indicator of a particular model. If you purchase a Stoeger weapon, you can count on having a technical passport for the weapon and a warranty certificate. The presence of the latter allows you to eliminate factory breakdowns free of charge. Some models of this variation of rifles are equipped with a high-quality sighting device and special mounts for it.

The attractive appearance of Crosman Benjamin air rifles is combined with good performance characteristics of the weapon, as well as affordable prices compared to Stoeger. An overview and technical characteristics of the Beretta 92FS air pistol can be found in this article. Advantages from other models, equipment and appearance.

arbalet-airgun

In relation to this company, I often use the expression “American-Italian-Turkish-Chinese”. It’s a joke, of course, but this cumbersome verbal construction perfectly reflects the real state of affairs: Stoeger is registered in the USA, is part of the Beretta concern, has a well-functioning firearms production in Turkey, and organized the production of its pneumatics in the PRC.

Initially, he followed the path of Crosman, also basing his model range on the design of the largest European air rifles. But unlike both the Spaniards themselves and the overseas giant (see “Where Crosman pneumatics are made”), with a very affordable price for its products, literally until recently it was not particularly pleased with the breadth of their range.

Classic spring-piston models "Stoeger"

Magnum class rifles

For many years, the company didn’t bother much with extravagant exterior design options and actually produced one model, with a slightly different stock.

"Stoeger X10 Wood Combo" and "Stoeger X20 Wood Combo"

As you can see, the 20th model has a more elaborate design, the fore-end has notches, and the butt has a pronounced “comb.” Otherwise it's one rifle. Options with a polymer stock are also available, both with camouflage coloring and in traditional black color (pictured).

"Stoeger X20 Synthetic"

By and large, they are all nothing more than the “Gamo Hunter 440” from twenty years ago, that is, a classic magnum breaker with a 25x100 mm compressor, an initial muzzle energy of about 20 joules and a speed of about 240 m/s with “heavy” 0.68 bullets grams and 280 m/s - half grams (brought to the requirements of Russian legislation by installing a weakened mainspring, see in the “Q&A” section, section “How are air rifles sold in Russia weakened”). However, in my opinion, it is noticeably prettier than both the prototype itself and the same old gamo-clones from Crosman. Apparently, the influence of Italian designers, who actively participated (and are participating) in the development of Stoeger models, is having an effect. By the way, it would be more correct to pronounce the name as “Steger”, but it never took root among the masses.

Interestingly, such a successful design led to unexpected consequences. What appeared to be “second level clones” were born, that is, copies of the X20 series. These are the Turkish “Strong S 450”, and the domestic IR-615 “Katran” created on its basis, and the very fresh “SiberGun” from a newcomer to the pneumatic market - “Akdaş Makina Silah Sanayi”. Moreover, even Hatsan, which is quite independent in technical and marketing policy, also, it seems, created its “Strikers” with an eye on Stoeger’s magnums. Unless with a traditionally solid branded compressor 27x100 mm.

Update January 2022

It looks like the 2021 Catalog will be very different not only from all previous ones, but also from last year’s, which has been replenished with a very wide range of new models. The changes affected not only the “junior” model series, but also the seemingly eternally unshakable :)) “Magnum” class.

So, for many years the manufacturer has been keeping the extremely popular X10 and X20 in production. The latter was especially in demand, and in polymer - thanks to a very nice stock, good plastic and an attractive price/quality ratio. Alas, the honored veterans are no longer available on the official website (there will be enough supplies for stores for more than one year). More precisely, the X20 remained in the polymer stock, only having acquired a branded muffler instead of the muzzle, and at the same time having lost the open sights due to the simple 4x32 optics. Now the model is called “ Stoeger X20 S2 ” (pictured) - S2 is precisely the name of the simplest version of the branded sound moderator.

Supermagnum from

The top model of the production lines was and remains the only supermagnum - the “ Stoeger X50 ” (pictured).

As you can see, stylistically it is extremely close to the X20 Wood (naturally, there is also a “synthetic” version) and is also a clone of Gamow’s product, but this time the legendary Hunter 1250, two decades ago and which marked the beginning of this class of super-powerful springs -piston pneumatic rifles.

True, a very peculiar clone.
From the Hunter he received a huge 29x120 mm compressor (accordingly, about 30 joules of muzzle energy) and a trigger mechanism (albeit somewhat degraded). But, like Crossman’s brother, the Benjamin Trail NP XL-1500, it is a noticeably simplified model compared to the prototype. However, “Gamo” itself has taken the path of simplification and standardization in its new product, which you can read about in the chapter “Gamo G-MAGNUM 1250” and “Gamo Hunter 1250” - differences and features.” Attention. As of 01.07.21, amendments to the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (Articles 222 and 223) came into force regarding pneumatic weapons with muzzle energy over 7.5 J. If previously liability, and only administrative responsibility, was provided for carrying, transporting and shooting at borders of populated areas, then from now on criminal prosecution with quite serious sanctions is provided for the sale, as well as illegal production, alteration or repair of such samples (see No matter how tight the string is, or New “anti-pneumatic” laws). So, when reading articles written in a completely different era :)), keep in mind the newly discovered circumstances...

Entry-level Stoeger rifles

That rare case when the rejection of already familiar traditions caused noticeable confusion among airgunners. The vast majority of Stoeger rifles, including the newest F40, are clones of the Spanish Gamo, which, perhaps, all fans of air guns are aware of. Hence questions like “Which gas spring is suitable for the Stoeger X5?” But none of them fit!

Yes, it is the Ex-fifth model that causes particular difficulties, since in appearance it is practically indistinguishable from its older relatives, especially the X20, except that it is inferior in terms of weight and size. Inside, everything is completely different for her.

The fact is that it is based on the design of the German “Diana mod 21/240”, or more precisely, its long-standing Chinese clone BAM-12. That is, it is equipped not with a lower, but with a central piston hook, and accordingly you cannot put a GP there. By the way, the barrel locking mechanism is also not a bolt, like the older Stoeger (and Gamo) models, but a classic Dianovsky spring-loaded ball.

So, in the photo from top to bottom “ Stoeger X5 Synthetic ” and “ Stoeger X5 Wood ”. As you can see, there are obvious similarities with the X20. Unlike the BAM-12 and even the Diana, the stock, especially the butt, looks “richer”. The influence of the Italian design, already mentioned several times above, is inherent in all the company’s production lines of weapons. True, it is not the luxurious Dian T05 trigger mechanism that is used here, but a very primitive analogue of the Chinese one.

In terms of basic characteristics, the Stoeger X5 is approximately at the level of our MP-512. That is, the muzzle energy is the legal 7.5 joules, the speed is 160-170 m/s. But it has no potential for “overclocking”, since with the same compressor diameter of 25 mm, the piston stroke is less than that of the “Murka”, by about 20 millimeters, with a corresponding decrease in volume.

Update, December 2022

It seems that in 2020, the good old classic X5 rifles are being replaced by the Stoeger RX5 :

As you can see, its appearance, in accordance with today's trends, has been redesigned in a more “tactical” style.

That is, this is really an entry-level model, one might say, for children. Although, both in appearance and in basic performance characteristics, it is noticeably superior to the very weak, but entirely tactical “ Stoeger X3 TAC ”.

By the way, in terms of ideology and filling, this is exactly a clone of the Diana 200 series, in particular the Diana 21 model. Its closest relatives are the same copies - the good old almost German “Umarex Perfecta” and the pure “Chinese” BAM-12, practically unknown in Russia. Compared to these well-deserved rifles, the “X3-TAC” looks really fashionable (of the modern models, the Chinese “Smersh R1/R2” are analogues). But most importantly, it is several times cheaper than the “truly Aryan” prototype, which is important for the children’s segment, even taking into account the incomparable level of quality.

Review of the quality of “Stoeger”, or Everything is known by comparison

Let's look specifically at the Stoeger X20 Synthetic, since my comrades in the magnum class (Diana 31, Gamo

Socom Carbine Luxe" and "Hatsan Striker 1000S") all as one, also in plastic stocks. There will be a comparison with them, even if the devices differ in price and design. I’ll say right away that I didn’t have the opportunity to look into the “offal”, so I’ll focus on subjective sensations.

Let's start with the bed. The polymer unexpectedly pleased me. In the sense that it falls very far short of both “Diana” and “Gamo”, but it is better than “Striker”, not to mention the Turkish mod 70, 80, 125 (except for “Sniper” ) etc. In general, it is a bit reminiscent of the stocks of the popular Smersha, apparently, even in industrial China (hehe) there is not much plastic, and maybe only one at all. In a word, the price/quality combination here is quite at the level.

The platoon had its own characteristics, caused by the presence of a gas spring, which I generally do not favor and make do with twisted ones. Therefore, it is difficult to objectively compare sensations, if only because of the breaking force and linear characteristics (see “Mainsprings for pneumatics”). However, I will try to build the following row: in terms of the actual fracture of the barrel, its locking, the comfort of the platoon itself, I will give priority to “Gamo”, let “Diana” be in second place, “Stoeger” (precisely because of the GP) - in third, “Hatsan” with powerful spring and terrible characteristics of the crossbars - an outsider.

Next: the rifle fires! And it’s quite good, I didn’t feel much of a difference with the “hammer” that costs twice as much, although it had a clear advantage, since in any case you get used to your weapon, for example, to the features of the trigger. And here Dian’s “T05” is beyond competition, but for the rest of the trio everything even looks funny.

The fact is that the trigger mechanisms of both the X20 and Stryker are essentially nothing more than the old (until 2010) SM Gamo. “Sokom” already has a new mechanism, although not the current “CAT” or “SAT” with slightly changed characteristics, but it suits me quite well - yes, it’s not “sport”, well, I’m not an athlete. Stoeger's SM is also quite adequate, but Khatsan's... The Turks managed to noticeably worsen the working, proven Spanish design so that I could not finally get used to it. But this is a topic for another conversation, especially since since 2022 the Strykers seem to have an updated SM.

What else... It's probably time to sum it up: the Stoeger X20 Synthetic (and its brothers, including the X10) is a normal rifle for the money. IMHO, understandable.

Well, now - an extremely useful video from Vitaly Klyuchnikov (GnoM), dedicated to the complete assembly/disassembly of the Stoeger X20 with installation of a gas spring and replacement of the cuff:

New times - new trends

However, time passed, competitors did not sleep, regularly updating their model ranges, and Stoeger could not stay away from the process. Especially given one noticeable modern trend. We are talking about the growing number of fans of the “tactical style”, who, alas, are not attracted to the centuries-old lines of classic rifle stocks.

New Stoeger spring-piston rifles

Stoeger A30 S2 appears with an “integrated muffler”, again very reminiscent of Gam’s “Wisper Maxxim”:

Then comes the turn of " Stoeger Atac ":

Well, here the “tacticality” is already off the charts and can satisfy its most ardent adherent. A muffler of the “S2 Supressor” generation is also installed here.

I would like to emphasize that, in essence, all these new items are a continuation of the traditions of the Gamo Hunter 440, except that the ancient (until 2010) Gamo trigger mechanism has undergone some changes. Well, of course, in accordance with the current fashion, the base already has pre-installed gas springs.

The next, very recent step was the introduction of the next generation of integrated silencers with an additional lower chamber under the symbol “S3”. Whether such devices are really necessary at the IFR is another matter, but at least it looks very impressive (in the photo “ Stoeger RX20 ”).

And here is the principle of their work:

Crosman followed this same path a little earlier with its SBD (Silencing Barrel Device), and it is even surprising that the traditional trendsetter in this segment - the Spanish Gamo - is so far limited to its much less brutal-looking Whisper Maxxim.

By the way, about “Gamo”, more precisely, about another new product from “Stoeger”, which is traditionally based on a Spanish design. This is truly unique among the gamo clones “Stoeger F40”, at the end of 2020 renamed “ Stoeger RX40 ”:

Unique because even “Crosman” has not yet decided to copy the Barcelona rifles with an under-barrel cocking. According to a very authoritative opinion, this is due to the patent-protected “clip” currently installed on Gamo CFX/CFR models. But “Stoeger” found a way out - in general, the subject of copying was the design of the “CF20” and “CF30” series that had long been discontinued, the clip itself was borrowed from the well-deserved “Weihrauch HW 57”. More details about all this can be found in the article “Stoeger F40 - a new air rifle with under-barrel cocking”.

American model range of spring-piston rifles "Stoeger"

Actually, it is no different from the European (global) one, except that it is noticeably poorer in model options, and the models themselves have different unified alphanumeric indices.

Stoeger S4000 - is it all about the cheeks?

So, " Stoeger S4000 ". In general, we have before us a classic, unremarkable pneumatic magnum-fracture, albeit in the original design characteristic of this company (see “What are “magnum” and “supermagnum” in pneumatics?”). By and large, this is the same European “Stoeger RX20” (compare for yourself with the image in the previous chapter).

Among the highlights of the new product, one can highlight only the replaceable “cheeks” (in the photo they are yellow) and, again, replaceable front sights with different colors of fiber-optic tubes. And of course, like the RX20, there is an integrated S3 muffler with an additional lower chamber.

According to the general principles of operation, it is similar to its “big brother” - “S4 Suppressor”, installed on the “XM1” (more about it below, at the end of the article).

Catalog of overseas "Stoegers" and their European analogues

I apologize in advance, but almost all of the images presented below will be just copies of those published above, because the changes for the American market affected only the names, and not the design and exterior of the models themselves.

So, before you is the “ Stoeger S3000-C ” (European “Stoeger RX5”).

There are also versions with pre-installed simple 4x32 optics, designated “Combo”. Available in both polymer and wooden stock

Stoeger S4000-E Suppressed described just above . For illustration, I chose a picture with a version in a tree, well, so that there was at least some variety:

Stoeger S6000-E ” is nothing more than the European “Stoeger RX40” that we also described earlier (this time, on the contrary, the version given is not in wood, but in a polymer stock):

And finally, the new 2022 “ Stoeger S8000-E TAC ”:

This, comrades, is a complete analogue of the European “ RX20TAC ”. The new product (more precisely, its differences from other models) is described in sufficient detail in the article “New models of air guns. Part 2".

First PCP rifle

So, it’s happened - “Stoeger” is now also in the league of “scuba divers” :)). The new product was first presented at IWA Show Germany 2022, now it has appeared and is available on the official website in 177 and 22 calibers/4.5 and 5.5 mm (9 and 7 charges in the drum magazine, respectively, with declared speeds 320 and 274 m/s).

There are two versions:

Below is the brutal “XM1 S4 Supressor”. Yes, we are talking about a rifle equipped with the latest generation of proprietary integrated silencers from Stoeger:

Actually, the diagram and principle of operation are clear from the picture. We have something similar to the device used in the Vintorez VSS :)), with a preliminary “pressure relief chamber”, in the photo - “decompression chamber”.

And finally - the official video about the new product from Stoeger - the first PCP rifle in its history:

Optics for Stoeger

When choosing an optical sight for a rifle, it is necessary to take into account the availability of standard sighting devices.

Some Stoeger rifles presented in the model line are already equipped with fairly high-quality standard optics as standard.

That category of models that do not have a standard optical sight are equipped with open-type sights with colored inserts. Given the minimal recoil, such rifles can be equipped with any variation of optics.

Disassembling the rifle

When resolving a question regarding disassembling a Stoeger air rifle, you must first make sure that the chamber and magazine are not loaded. At the initial stage, you should open the shutter and lock it in this position. After this, the handle is removed from the bolt frame and the nut is separated from the front of the tubular mechanism.

The next task that will have to be resolved is separating the forend from the barrel. Then you need to pull the bolt assembly out of the receiver. After this, the locking pin is removed from the bolt, as well as the bolt itself is removed from the bolt frame. At the final stage of resolving this issue, the trigger mechanism is removed from the receiver.

Installing a gas spring on a Stoeger x20 rifle is described in detail in this video:

It is important to remember that disassembling an air rifle is a rather labor-intensive process and requires certain skills. You should not resort to this procedure too often. It should only be performed in cases of extreme necessity.
