Hunting carbine "Arhar" (TOZ-97): description, characteristics, care rules

Tula weapons have been famous for a long time; they are widely used in special units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and are popular among the civilian population. The range of products, including the Arhar carbine, is aimed at the military industry, police, hunters, and athletes.

The activities of the famous Russian forge began back in 1712 by a personal decree of Peter I. For more than three hundred years, serial and prototypes have been produced here. In the 90s, the plant underwent significant modernization, after which it became a joint-stock company. Now it is a recognized leader among international military, dual and civilian high-tech industries.

Description

The Arhar hunting rifled carbine is a self-loading rifle. The basis for its production was the famous modified TOZ-8 rifle. It is worth noting that it was put into service back in the thirties of the last century. On the market, the weapon in question has many competitors in the shooting and hunting field, but few of them can compare in reliability, practicality and ease of operation.

Analogues of this carbine are produced by several enterprises in Russia. Among them:

  1. Tula Arms Factory.
  2. Joint Stock Company "Molot".
  3. Vyatsko-Polyansky Machine Plant.
  4. Weapons department of TsKIB SSO.

Like any mechanism, including a weapon, the Arhar carbine has its advantages and disadvantages.

TOZ-11 carbine

The 11th model of the presented family. This updated version of the rifle comes in the form of a single-shot carbine based on the TOZ-8.

The rifle has undergone virtually no changes. The only difference between this sample and the earlier TOZs is the reduction in the weight of the rifle, which was reduced to 2 kg.

Carbines of the TOZ series can be presented in various price niches. One way or another, this series costs noticeably less than its Russian-made competitors, for example, the same Izhevsk Sobol.

The price range for such rifles can vary from 10 to 25 thousand rubles. You can buy the presented samples on various weapons websites.

When purchasing such a rifle, you need to take into account the fact that a small caliber does not exempt you from obtaining a license to purchase rifled weapons. The presented samples are rightfully considered one of the best types of firearms in their class.

Proven in combat conditions, time-tested rifles of the TOZ series have still not lost their popularity among hunting enthusiasts and athletes

TOZ are hunting rifles produced by the Tula Arms Factory since 1885. The weapon is characterized by high combat qualities, survivability, durability and an affordable price.

Features and purpose

The main advantages include the following points:

  • simplicity of design and ease of operation similar to military analogues;
  • excellent ergonomic and aesthetic characteristics of a hunting rifle;
  • modified stock configuration, which significantly improved the appearance and combination of traditional elements.

The disadvantages of this weapon include the barrel, which is not subject to pinning, as well as the need to frequently clean and lubricate the product.

The Arhar self-loading carbine is designed for use in commercial and amateur hunting. Most often it is used for shooting at large and medium game (wolves, moose, wild boars, roe deer and similar animals that are allowed to be hunted).

What kind of production is it suitable for?

Carbine KO-91/30: description, characteristics and photos
On related forums you can often read that the SKS is completely unsuitable for hunting, since it does not allow you to kill large prey - elk, bear, wild boar - with one shot. But here it is worth considering that this weapon and, more importantly, ammunition, were not intended for hunting.

It wouldn’t occur to anyone to scold a “small gun” for not being able to kill a roe deer with one shot, or a large-caliber long-range rifle because it tears apart a squirrel. In addition, the problem lies precisely in the low mass of the bullet.

After all, it was intended to defeat people, and not much more tenacious wild boars or mighty bears.

But in its niche, the hunting SKS is very good - when hunting a hare or even a roe deer, a large bird like a capercaillie, a goose. It is often used by taiga fishermen hunting sable - they liked the high accuracy and small bullet.

However, a good shooter who can hit the head, heart or lung of an animal will confidently be able to hit a wild boar or elk. So you shouldn’t believe rumors about the low combat and hunting qualities of the carbine.

Now you know about the main advantages and disadvantages of the glorious SCS. At the same time, you learned about the history of its creation and development. This means you can easily decide whether this weapon is right for you or whether it makes sense to look for another option.

The presented information article tells about the hunting rifled carbine, its appearance and technical characteristics, the advantages and disadvantages of this legendary carbine, and a general conclusion about the SKS.

Varieties and analogues

The rifles produced have two variations, differing in the charges used:

  1. Modification "Arhar" - 97, developed for firing with 7.62 x 39 cartridges.
  2. The second type of SKS is designed for a charge caliber of 7.62 x 53.

The closest analogues to the weapon in question are a number of domestic and foreign rifles:

  1. Self-loading version of the Simonov configuration (SKS-45) with caliber 7.62.
  2. A variant of a hunting rifle without an OP-SKS mounting bayonet.
  3. Among foreign representatives, the closest competitors are considered to be modifications of the M-630 type, manufactured by.

History of the creation of SCS

Since 1943, an intermediate cartridge developed by N. Elizarov and B. Semin has been adopted for service. The 7.62×39 mm caliber bullet required a new shooting system. Its first samples were developed by S. Simonov by the end of 1944. The basis for them was the modification of 1940-1941, which never entered serial production.

The new SKS model carbine has a folding bayonet of an integral type and a removable gas chamber. The design excluded a muzzle brake compensator. The first units were sent to the Shot courses at the beginning of 1945. The weapon was approved, but due to the need to fine-tune the carbine and cartridge, it was adopted only in 1949.

The rifle found no less popularity than the AK or the Degtyarev light machine gun. All options complemented each other. The Kalash, for example, fired in bursts, producing a good density of fire, and was effective at short distances or in group combat. The self-loading automatic carbine designed by Simonov had a sight line and barrel longer than that of the AK. This ensured accuracy, and replenishing the magazine with a clip ensured ease of fire attack from long and medium distances.

Interesting to know! In the 1950s, carbines were replaced by machine guns, but air defense troops, engineering, construction and logistics units used the SKS model 45 until the late 1980s.

TOZ-97 Arhar - carbine produced by the Tula Arms Plant

Weapons from the glorious forge of Russia have long been known both among the military and law enforcement officials, as well as among lovers of hunting and clay pigeon shooting. The personal decree of Peter I back in 1712 marked the beginning of the activities of the famous Tula arms factory.

For almost three hundred years, both prototypes and serial production for mass production were produced here. The enterprise underwent a large-scale reorganization in the early 90s, and already in 1993 the world-famous plant became an open joint-stock company. Today it is one of the internationally recognized centers of military, civil and dual production techniques and technologies.

Review of the TOZ-97 Arhar carbine

The Tula hunting rifled carbine TOZ-97 "Arhar" of the self-loading type is produced on the basis of the famous modified TOZ-8 rifle, which was put into service in the early thirties of the last century. Despite the mass of different analogues of small arms and hunting weapons, few global companies risk competing in the simplicity, reliability and quality of the TOZ brand.

A line of carbines of this type is produced at the most prestigious factories in Russia. They are produced at JSC Tula Arms Plant (it also produces TOZ-99, TOZ-78, TOZ-88, TOZ-124, KO-44, OP SKS), JSC Molot Vyatsko-Polyansky Machine-Building Plant. Some models based on SKS are produced by TsKIB SSO gunsmiths. Like any weapon, TOZ-97 “Arhar” has negative and positive qualities.

Operating principle and disassembly

The operation of the Arhar carbine mechanism is based on the release of gunpowder gases. Leaving the barrel, they use the rod and piston to influence the bolt. Aiming is carried out using the front sight and rear sight; it is possible to mount an optical sight.

A safety lever is located behind the trigger guard. Firing is possible only in single salvos. The estimated shot distance is about one kilometer, the standard distance for hunting is 100-150 meters. The spread of charges is about 200 millimeters from the aiming point.

The walnut stock of the semi-pistol type is equipped with characteristic patterns. All operations for disassembling and assembling weapons are carried out by making sure that the magazine is removed and there is no charge in the barrel. Manipulations are performed strictly according to the instructions included in the kit.

Second phase

The effectiveness and speed of this procedure depends on the availability of special tools. These are shooting vices, targets, carbine rests.

The zeroing work begins after fixing the carbine in a special machine. In an optical sight, it is necessary to move the crosshair to the center of the visual field in advance. For this purpose, a bracket adjustment mechanism is used. Using an open sight with a square or aiming stump, set the crosshairs. This work is labor-intensive and requires special patience. The shooter must be careful, since the slightest careless movement may disrupt the system and everything will have to start all over again. It is recommended to check the correct alignment of the optics with an open sight. The accuracy of hits is affected by the age of the weapon. The results of hits in a new weapon may differ from shooting with a shot barrel. Today, most SKS come to gun stores directly from warehouses. The buyer should take this into account when zeroing the weapon. All data on the carbine is contained in its passport. It is recommended that you familiarize yourself with them when purchasing.

An inexperienced hunter who decides to equip his SKS with an optical sighting device is recommended to start with systems that have a low magnification. Today, on gun counters, buyers are presented with a wide selection of different optical sights. Among them, products from such manufacturers as Sentinel, Veber, Leupold are very popular.

When choosing a device brand, you must take into account the conditions in which it will be used. An optical sight is a precision instrument that requires careful handling.

Care and lubrication

When preserving for a long period of storage, the carbine requires careful cleaning. Then it must be lubricated with neutral special oil, and then wiped dry. The stem channels should first be washed with soda or soap solution. Final cleaning is carried out using a metal brush lubricated with universal gun lubricant. At this stage, you should not hold the rifle with your hands by the metal parts in order to avoid the appearance of rust in the future.

Thick solutions containing unprocessed petroleum jelly, gun lard, and grease are quite suitable for processing hunting weapons. Such lubricating compounds are first tested on brass; if the metal does not darken, then the product is suitable for application to weapon metal.

It is necessary to avoid contact of the composition with wooden elements. They are treated with wax mixed with gasoline. The barrel is plugged with an oiled plug and wrapped in oiled cloth. Do not forget that carbine care is a regular process on which the durability of the product and its performance depend.

conclusions

If we analyze all the pros and cons of the TOZ-87 gun, then we can say about its original design and good idea, but poor execution.

Of course, there are owners who have a positive attitude towards this weapon, but most owners speak about it at a satisfactory level.

Basically, it can be used for hunting waterfowl, but for hunting large animals it is recommended to take something else.

Shooting a bullet from this barrel shows good results, but the high probability of failure in reloading only discourages you from shooting a wild boar with it.
