TOZ-99 is considered one of the very first hunting carbines that began to be produced at the Tula Arms Plant.
Many people know about the legendary rifles of Tula gunsmiths, which were created back in the days of the Soviet Union and today are actively used by hunters.
All these models have already been discussed several times in various forums, and a number of their disadvantages and advantages have been identified. As for the TOZ-99, we still need to talk and understand this carbine in detail.
Its history begins in 1997, when the plant began producing these weapons. Thus, this rifle is relatively young compared to its predecessors.
If we talk about any serious design changes, then this model simply does not have them. Much was adopted from their counterparts of previous years.
Review of the TOZ-99 carbine
The model appeared relatively recently: the Tula Arms Plant has been producing the carbine since 1997. The model is intended for shooting fur-bearing animals and birds, and is more in line with the needs of hunters than amateur hunters.
The TOZ-99 carbine is self-loading, that is, it allows you to fire several shots in a row without wasting time on manual reloading. This option is preferable in commercial hunting, where catching an animal is not a pleasure, but a source of income.
From a design point of view, the carbine is a modified version of its predecessor, the TOZ-78. The latter was equipped with a longitudinally sliding bolt.
An overview of the TOZ-99 carbine is given in this video:
Advantages and disadvantages
TOZ-99 is most popular among fur-bearing animals and poultry hunters, but amateur hunters do not neglect it either. The lightness of the product is also attractive due to its Russian production: the latter ensures a constant availability of spare parts and cartridges.
The advantages of the TOZ product include:
- first of all, the affordable cost of the model, cartridges and muzzle devices;
- good grip - and many owners claim that the “old” version of the butt - birch, walnut with a more “pistol” angle of the handle, is more convenient than the new one - with a cheek piece made of beech;
- light weight of the carbine – 2.4 kg;
- the barrel is made of artillery steel, its bore and chamber are chrome-plated;
- good accuracy - the diameter of the “circle” is 5 cm when shooting from a distance of 50 m;
- there is a safety catch, which avoids an accidental shot;
- The carbine is equipped with a mechanical sighting device, and the front sight is adjustable both vertically and horizontally. Drum type rear sight. There are grooves for optical sight brackets, suitable for several models;
- Easy, simple disassembly that does not require effort or special tools, so caring for the weapon is simple.
Flaws:
- the trigger force is not adjustable;
- The self-loading mode is ensured by the recoil energy of the spring-loaded bolt. At the beginning of using the rifle, especially in cold weather, there may not be enough energy. As practice shows, it will take about 300 shots in “manual” mode to eliminate the failure;
- It is better to use standard cartridges. Thus, supersonic aircraft cannot be used with all their characteristics;
- The appearance of the carbine is rather unpresentable; it is a purely utilitarian solution.
Self-loading small-caliber carbine TOZ-99
Purpose
- The TOZ-99 small-caliber carbine is intended for commercial harvesting of small fur-bearing animals such as sable, squirrel, as well as birds - capercaillie, for example.
- Model TOZ-99-04 is used for training shooting, amateur and professional hunting. This is an export version, which is produced by the plant for Canada and the USA.
Varieties
The company offers three variants of hunting rifle.
- TOZ-99 is a basic model with a rifled constant barrel. Equipped with an open mechanical sight.
- TOZ-99-01 – the barrel can be quickly detachable. In addition, this particular version has grooves for attaching an optical sight.
- TOZ-99-04 – model for export. Its difference is the thread on the muzzle of the barrel. This feature allows the use of muzzle devices.
The carbine can be equipped with a stock with a cheek piece, and the letter “L” is added to the usual markings.
Weapons can be used in any region except the tropical zone.
Characteristics of a self-loading carbine
- The weapon can fire 5.6 mm rimfire cartridges. According to the manufacturer's recommendation, it is better to use sporting and hunting cartridges.
- The barrel is made of high quality steel with a chrome-plated chamber and bore, which only adds value to the weapon. The length is 536 mm.
- The front sight is adjustable vertically and horizontally, and the rear sight is drum-type with several divisions. In addition, there are special grooves for attaching an optical sight.
- The carbine has a safety feature in its design, which is turned off or on using a flag located in front of the trigger.
- For continuous firing of several shots, a magazine for five or ten rounds is provided.
- The bolt moves due to the action of the energy of the powder gases. He ejects the spent cartridge case, cocks the mainspring, sends a new cartridge case into the chamber and installs the firing pin.
- The stock is made in most cases from birch and walnut, but beech is used much less frequently. Some models are made with a cheek.
- The hook release cannot be adjusted as there are no adjustment screws. The pressing force ranges from 2 to 3 kg.
- The weight of the carbine reaches 2.4 kg, which can be considered light weight.

Design
TOZ-99 is more of a professional than an amateur hunting weapon. Its structure is quite simple, there are no decorations or accessories for convenience, and disassembly and assembly are simplified as much as possible.
- The body and butt of the rifle are made of wood - walnut, birch, and less often beech. It is possible to make a butt with a cheek.
- Metal parts are black.
- The operation of the automatic part is based on the energy of the powder gas: it is used to eject the cartridge case, chamber the cartridge, cock the mainspring and install the firing pin.
- A useful device is a folding and adjustable front sight. On the TOZ-99-01 version it can be replaced with an optical sight.
- It is possible to mount a magazine for 5 rounds or 10. The experience of hunters says that the first option is more reliable, since failures occur in the second.
- According to the same reviews, the stated accuracy of fire is 5 cm at 50 m, which is significantly improved when using high-quality cartridges.
- For shooting, the Tula Arms Plant recommends using sporting, hunting or other rimfire cartridges.
Receiver of the TOZ-99-01 carbine
Advantages of a self-loading carbine
- Automatic supply of cartridges, which allows continuous shooting.
- Availability of a magazine for five or ten rounds.
- The front sight is adjustable.
- Possibility of installing an optical sight.
- High quality artillery steel barrel.
- Not the worst accuracy compared to other carbines.
- The carbine fits well when thrown.
- Presence of a flag fuse.
- Light weapon weight.
Operating principle
TOZ-99 is a self-loading carbine in which the energy of powder gas is used for reloading.
- Locking is carried out under the action of 2 springs.
- When unlocked, thanks to the energy of the threshold gas, the cartridge case is removed, the mainspring is cocked, and the firing pin is cocked.
- The safety helps prevent accidental firing: in the “fire” mode, a red dot is visible on the trigger housing. When the fuse is set to “safety” mode, the red dot closes, and the latch blocks the sear, preventing the striker from being decocked.
- The cartridges are fed automatically under the action of the magazine spring.
- The cartridges are sent into the chamber using the bolt.
The weapon is stored only unloaded, with the firing pin released. Ammunition must be stored separately and out of reach.
This video demonstrates zeroing the TOZ-99 carbine:
Disassembly
To clean and lubricate the weapon, it is necessary to periodically carry out partial disassembly. A complete repair is carried out if necessary to repair the rifle.
Disassembly is simple - this is one of the advantages of the carbine.
- By pressing the latch, the magazine assembly is removed.
- Holding the plug and pushing it slightly forward, remove the box lock.
- Retract the bolt and remove the firing pin spring and both return mechanisms.
- The reloading handle is turned 90 degrees and removed. Then take out the bolt and firing pin. In this form, the weapon is ready for lubrication and cleaning. It is recommended to carry out the procedure every 150 shots. During storage, the carabiner must be lubricated once every 3 months.
- If complete disassembly is required, then after the above steps you need to unscrew the screws at the bottom and disconnect the stock from the barrel with the box.
Assembly is performed in reverse order.
Add a slice of zebra for watering
If you are going to hunt big game (boar, elk, bear, etc.), then cutting up the wild meat will be the best decision for you. Due to their greater speed, projectiles of this type can fly farther than smooth-bore projectiles, thereby allowing the distance between the shooter and the target to be significantly increased.
Also, the cutting of fish for watering has great killing power, which will become a plus in fielding great creatures. At that time, the smooth-trunked trees are ideally suited for fishing for birds and other animals.
This weapon allows the bullet to spend more primary energy, which means it can hit the target with greater force and at a greater distance. The main advantage of rifled guns is high accuracy over long distances (up to 50 m). Current cut-out models of screws and carbines allow you to fire from a distance of 300 meters or more.
- For the method of reloading a rifle, as well as a smooth-bore armored gun, you can:
- self-loading;
- with a rear-hinged bolt;
- with a rotating mechanism.
Recommendations from proven Myslyvska: how to add sliced Myslyvska zbra in Ukraine
A lot of amateurs use self-loaders, because the speed of reloading in them often compensates for errors in aiming. However, it is recommended to add a fractured frame of the fracture type or with a latching shutter, since such a design does not allow vibration or movement when shooting.
Currently in Ukraine, the civilian population is prohibited from carrying and using short-barreled rifles. Only a limited number of models are available for you.
Myslyvska cut with grain in Ukraine: where does the moisture lie?
- As it has already become clear, firing with a rifled barrel will provide the shooter with three main advantages over a smoothbore
- selected:
- range;
- tension;
- accuracy.
However, since the range and strength are entirely due to the design of your gun, and have little to do with third-party inputs, then the accuracy (accuracy) is the result of a number of factors, starting with the first hand and the right angle. sensing the specific technical displays of the armor.
Apply the cut to the zbra in Ukraine
First of all, looking at the characteristics of the gun, which is reflected in the quality, is due to the importance of the drill and the thickness of its landing in the receiver. The roughness of the barrel bore, the roughness, and the uneven bottom of the rifles can cause discoloration during shooting by up to 20%.
Also, first of all, we need to apply the cutting edge in Ukraine, and then focus on finishing the surface of the firing lugs of the cylinder and the bolt, as well as the supporting surfaces of the receiver. If the surface is not symmetrically formed, one-sided spring deformation can result in deformation of up to 50%.
It is practically impossible to select the ideal weapon for you without shooting. But it’s not always a good idea to try a towel before purchasing, so you can’t rely on the reputation of the manufacturer and the seller, as well as on the advice of reliable traders. With a significant world you can guarantee a bathhouse in the distance.

Tuning
The simplicity of the design and purpose of the weapon does not provide too much room for improvement. If the carbine is used for its intended purpose - commercial hunting, it is not required to have particularly high accuracy. If the TOZ-99 plays the role of a sporting weapon that is affordable and maintainable, then various kinds of manipulations are possible.
Most often they resort to bedding. The standard fastening of the bolt group to the stock is not very strong, as it provides for the possibility of replacement. By adjusting the stock you can compensate for misalignment and achieve more accurate shooting.

Owner reviews
Considering the low cost of the carbine and its purpose, it is difficult to expect high shooting accuracy from the weapon. As a rule, those who are interested in sports shooting do not choose this model. Hunters, both professionals and amateurs, are mostly satisfied with the rifle’s performance. However, there are a number of complaints about the model.
- The accuracy of shooting is greatly affected by a tight trigger. This feature is considered the main disadvantage of the carbine.
- Another drawback is this: the grooves under the ejector quickly become clogged with gunpowder and carbon deposits. This problem can only be solved by using cartridges with improved powder combustion characteristics.
We talk about how to choose a carabiner in a special material.
Gun
Judge for yourself: the country is small, there is no military-industrial complex of its own, there are enemies all around, the economy largely depends on donations from “outside”, it is simply ridiculous to talk seriously about the production of special-purpose weapons intended for liquidations. Not only will such weapons be low-volume and therefore expensive, but just imagine how much money will have to be spent on R&D! So the sons of Zion had to compensate for the performance characteristics (tactical and technical characteristics) of the small-caliber cartridge with masterly shooting accuracy and personal perseverance.
Analogs
- The closest analogue of the model is its predecessor – the TOZ-78 bolt-action carbine.
- Not analogous, but also popular are such self-loading carbines as Benelli Argo, Saiga MK, Anschutz 525, BAR Mark II Safari, Vepr Hunter, Remington 750, Remington 7600, MP-161K, Executive Browning,
The TOZ-99 shotgun is a model for commercial hunting with average characteristics at an affordable price. It is recommended to use the weapon for hunting animals, and not for sport or recreational shooting.

History of the development of the Toz-78 rifle
The history of the creation of the Toz 78 carbine is connected with the modernization of its predecessors - the Toz-17 and Toz-18 rifles. They became the basis for new weapons. Modernization itself is associated with the use of new technologies and modern designs.
The Toz-78 rifle was originally developed as a hunting rifle. The main emphasis during the design was on the reliability of the weapon - it had to work even in difficult weather conditions. To achieve this, the rifle has a sealed bolt and box, which prevents dirt from getting into the internal mechanisms.
The increased reliability of the rifle also affected the magazine. Previous samples could jam when reloading. To eliminate this problem, it was necessary to change the rearrangement of cartridges in the rifle's power supply. The operation of the weapon, its disassembly and cleaning has also been simplified.
The development of the Toz 78 carbine took place in 1986-87 at the Tula Arms Plant. To this day, the rifle remains one of the most popular and reliable hunting rifles. This is confirmed not only by comparative technical characteristics, but also by numerous reviews from hunters.
