Design features
A muffler or sound moderator for pneumatics is a hollow cylinder, usually made of metal or aluminum alloy D16. Inside there are several conical chambers that break up the sound wave during the firing process. The more chambers inside the muffler, the quieter the sound of the shot.
The products are attached to the weapon using a threaded connection; on some models of pistols, it is necessary to unscrew a special plug, and then screw in the muffler itself in its place. Metal models have a special oxide coating to protect them from scratches.
Silencer simulators serve only to change the appearance of the weapon and do not have sound suppression functions. Such products are made of ABS plastic, which in appearance is practically no different from metal.
This material is strong enough to withstand all the delights of careless handling.
Barrel extensions have several useful functions. Firstly, their appearance exactly matches the silencer, giving the weapon a new, more brutal look. Secondly, by lengthening the barrel of an air gun, the bullet exit speed increases.
The energy of compressed air, when released, manages to transfer more of the energy to the ammunition than with a standard barrel length. These products do not have hollow chambers to suppress the sound of a shot.
As a result of installing a barrel extension, the bullet exit speed increases by approximately 20%.
Thus, with a simple solution you can increase the power of your weapon and increase the range of targeted shooting.

Main conclusion
Often, when firing, they try to hide its sound. And the main reason for this is the desire to hide the shot itself or its location. For this task, silencers for weapons were created, or as they are also called sound moderators. They are mainly used by snipers in the army and special forces, although sometimes hunters do not disdain them.
The prices for these accessories fluctuate in a fairly wide range, which is why many try to assemble a muffler at home, sometimes even from improvised means. The main thing is not to forget that the use of sound moderators in Ukraine is completely legal, but only for non-homemade ones. And only on those weapons that are provided for this.
In order to understand the principle of operation and design of the muffler, it is necessary to understand what causes the sound. There are three main sources:
- moving parts of the weapon - when fired, they hit each other with great force and speed, thereby creating sound
- shock wave from a bullet (if the bullet has a speed higher than the speed of sound)
- sound from powder gases - when leaving the barrel they have supersonic speed and when expanding they make a loud sound
And if practically nothing can be done with the first two points, then the muffler is designed to cope with the third.
How the sound moderator works
The principle of operation of the PBS is to reduce the speed of powder gases, cool them and thereby reduce the pressure in the muzzle of a pistol or rifle. This can be achieved by cameras inside the cylinder.
Gases swirl in them and exit at a lower speed.
The muffler can also use heat-absorbing materials that help cool the powder gases, thereby absorbing energy and reducing their speed.
Some models have only gas expansion chambers, others have heat-absorbing materials. But the best models are considered to be those whose design uses both methods of reducing the energy of powder gases.
Pistol silencer device
All silent shooting devices are divided into two types:
- integrated - are part of the weapon barrel
- tactical - screwed onto the muzzle using a special thread or secured with clamps
Tactical silencers are the most common. They also come in several types and differ in internal structure. The most common are:
- The simplest one consists of a cylindrical expansion chamber, with a connecting nut and a slot closed at the front by a rubber membrane. Since the chamber is larger than the barrel bore, the gases in it expand, losing speed, and come out of it after the bullet with less energy. Over time, the membrane wears out (it is designed for about 100 shots) and must be replaced periodically or use a solid rubber plug.
- With seal - also consists of an expansion chamber and two rubber or ebonite seal plugs between which a spacer sleeve is located.
- Two-chamber eccentric - has a chamber with a partition and acts almost like a simple one.
- With heat absorption - the principle is based on the absorption of heat, and therefore energy, using copper or brass wire or aluminum shavings. The disadvantage of such models is the need to frequently change absorbers.
- Multi-chamber - they operate on the principle of the simplest, but since they have several chambers with partitions instead of membranes, there is no need to replace them, which means their service life is longer.
- With flow breaker – consists of an internal perforated sleeve and a flow breaker helix.
How to make a homemade silencer for a pistol?
Homemade weapon silencers are not the best option. After all, in order for such a product to fully fulfill its functions, and also be safe to use, it is necessary to carry out many calculations, select the right materials and assemble this entire structure. And this is not so simple, especially in “handicraft” conditions.
And even if you do everything correctly, there is no guarantee that you will get exactly the result you were looking for. Therefore, we strongly advise you not to engage in this matter yourself.
It’s better to go to specialized stores where you can choose and buy not only a sound moderator for your carbine or pneumatic rifle, but also other weapon tuning.
Some craftsmen, of course, try to make mufflers from PET bottles or oil filters from MANs. The first option generally looks comical, and the second one may drown out something, but it won’t work for long and can be dangerous to use.
Of course, there is another option: dig up a couple of drawings on the Internet and contact some turner. But this will not guarantee that you will get exactly what you wanted. Therefore, it is better not to take risks, but to turn to professionals with this issue.
Main conclusion
So, having understood the principle of operation of the BBBS and having familiarized yourself with the drawings of silencers, you can draw one main conclusion - the manufacture of a silencer for firearms is a rather complex issue, both in terms of calculations and in terms of production.
Therefore, we strongly advise you not to do this yourself. It is better to contact specialized stores and purchase this device there.
Moreover, there you can buy not only a silencer, but also a butt plate, supports, handles and much more, which will make hunting much easier for you.
Moderator do it yourself drawings
Gentlemen, firearms owners! – please do not disturb, I only make mods for pneumatics!
Moderator entirely from D16T
The length of the standard model is 220 mm.
The weight of the standard model (30x220mm) is approximately 100 grams. But, if you need a massive moderator (for example, for the MP-512), then manufacturing it is not a problem.
Internals – double-circuit conical coils according to the “Petersburg scheme”
It is also possible to order a modular moderator. In this case, you can quickly change the number of cups and the length of the product.
Muzzle for Gamo CF30CFXCFR with moderator Material D16T.
Made in a single body, or separately on a thread. Front cover with thread.
The thickness of the moderator body allows you to cock fractures without fear while holding the moderator with your hand. The design of the moderator allows you to effectively use the entire volume of the moderator, so the moderators are universal (suitable for PPP and PCP, MK and CO2)
Almost does not shift the center of gravity.
For rifles without threads on the barrel - fit through 2 bushings, with 2 countersunk M5 screws clamping across them. For rifles IZH-60/61 (plastic), MP-512, MP-513 – fixation on the standard barrel thread.
(12×1) For Gamo Hunter 1250 – fixation on the standard barrel threads (15x1) For T-4, M-2, Cricket, Edgan – on the standard barrel threads. For Di48-52 – The front mounting sleeve inside the moderator is mounted on the barrel. The rear plug fits onto the false barrel.
It is also tightened with 2 screws. There are also additional mods for Edgan (length 100 mm), they are screwed into the plug of the standard mod on a 12x1 thread
For Bam-50, Benjamin Discovery, Steer - fit through an adapter bushing (+300 rubles to the cost.) The bushing itself is fixed on the barrel with 2 M5 screws for an internal hexagon.
ATTENTION! For the Benjamin Discovery and Bam-50 rifles, the outer diameter of the barrel floats by 0.2-0.3 mm from model to copy. Therefore, the customer is asked to measure the barrel with a caliper/micrometer before ordering. It is also possible to manufacture moders with a 1/2 UNF thread fit
Any landing length is possible, but not less than 100mm, as I wrote above.
For many rifles of the lowest and middle price categories, the outer diameter of the barrel “floats” by 0.2-0.3 mm from one item to another. Therefore, the customer is asked to measure the barrel with a caliper/micrometer before ordering.
To avoid misunderstandings, I want to immediately warn owners of supermagnum-ppp. With them (Diana-350, Gamo Hunter-1250, Hatsan 125/135, MP-513) the sound of the piston hitting is quite loud and it drowns out all other sounds of the rifle.
And therefore, having installed my moderator, a person may not feel the difference in volume and will think that the moderator is not working. The IFR moder is valid ONLY when listening at a distance (15-20 meters).
This has been proven many times.
That is, the shooter may not feel the difference, but in fact there is a difference, you just need to compare shots with and without a mod at a distance.
I want to warn PCP owners that rifles with high overflow or supersonic speeds will also not be silenced until you correct the flow and speed. For very powerful PCPs, such as Airforce Condor, Career Dragon, Sumatra 2500 and others, the linear dimensions of the moderator will be larger than the standard model. A pipe with a diameter of 35, 40 mm will be used.
According to the ordering, payment, receipt procedure:
Write to me only by email
To place an order for the production of a moderator, you need to send a letter to the following address:
Topic – moderator order for rifle “X”
in the letter itself you MUST write
1) Make and model of the rifle (for example Diana 350) 2) Caliber (for example 4.5) 3) The desired overall length of the moder (for example 250 mm) 4) The desired length of fit on the barrel (for example 150 mm) 5) If there is a thread, write (for example thread 12x1, thread length 10 mm)6) For rifles of the middle and lower price category: Gamo, Hatsan, Norica, BAM, and others - indicate the barrel diameter with an accuracy of 0.1 mm
I kindly ask you to follow this scheme, because... It will be easier for me to navigate orders.
If you are in the region, I will send you my details for transfer to my bank account.
Sound moderators designed for airguns are sometimes mistakenly called "suppressors". This article will convince you that the operating principles of a silencer and a sound moderator are significantly different.
We will study the design of this device, consider its disadvantages and advantages for hunting, and at the same time understand the criteria for choosing the right model.
At the end of the day - a “recipe” for making a muffler with your own hands.
What is a sound moderator and why is it needed in an air rifle?
Let us immediately make a reservation that modern Russian legislation prohibits the use of a muffler. To reconcile pneumatics with this fact, a sound moderator was developed. A logical question arises - why does an air rifle need to muffle the sound? The shot is already practically silent.
The soundproofing function is important for any type of weapon, but pneumatic sound moderators also have other useful qualities. Let's list the main ones:
- increasing barrel strength;
- combating premature wear typical of air rifles;
- positive effect on shooting accuracy.
The listed qualities have turned sound moderators into a popular accessory among fans of air guns. Sound moderators are used by professional athletes and hunters, but you need to choose this device wisely.
Principle of operation
To understand the principle of operation of the sound moderator, it is necessary to clearly imagine the picture of a pneumatic shot. The sound of a rifle shot (pneumatic) consists of four components:
- The piston hits the compressor wall (this happens after the spring is decompressed). The sound of the impact disappears 20 meters from the barrel.
- Air cotton. The bullet is pushed out of the rifle barrel, and then a popping sound is heard. This occurs due to a sharp pressure drop. The sound of the pop can be heard far away, so it is better to get rid of it.
- The hiss of a bullet. It is heard during the flight of a bullet and is explained by air turbulence at its edges.
- The sound of a hit. Occurs when a bullet hits a target.
It is impossible to eliminate all these side effects, but a high-quality sound moderator allows you to minimize the second point.
Design and difference from a silencer for firearms
Sectional model of a sound moderator
A sound moderator, unlike a muffler, does not dampen the sound, but changes its tone. The volume of the shot also decreases, but does not disappear completely. The device of the sound moderator is extremely simple - it is a cylinder divided into chambers by disk partitions.
Holes are made in the partitions along the line of bullet movement. The diameter of the holes slightly exceeds the caliber of the bullet. The theory involves dividing the sound moderator tube into sections of unequal size. The scheme of their construction is as follows:
- 1 chamber (closest to the barrel) is the largest, occupies half the total length of the muffler;
- Chamber 2 (and subsequent ones) gradually decreases.
The design of sound moderators from different manufacturers may differ, but only one thing remains unchanged - the presence of sound-absorbing material. Stores sell one-piece and collapsible sound moderators - sections of the latter tend to be detached or extended.
Installation and testing of the sound moderator on the Hatsan air rifle is shown in the video:
The moderator is installed at the very end of the weapon barrel - fastening is carried out using a thread. Sound moderators are best suited for multi-compressor, spring-piston and PCP rifles. Certain types of air pistols and gas rifles are also suitable.
Advantages and disadvantages of use
Now let's look at the advantages and disadvantages of a muffler for pneumatics. The sound moderator's cat cried a lot of cons:
- price;
- complexity of manufacturing (although there are simple solutions);
- problems with legality (it is problematic to draw the line between a silencer and a sound moderator).
Why do many hunters strive to equip their pneumatic guns with similar toys? Rifles equipped with sound moderators benefit from balance, maneuverability and ergonomics. There are other advantages:
- noticeable absorption of noise from a shot;
- DTK (muzzle brake-compensator) function;
- increasing the safety margin of the barrel;
- aesthetics (pneumatics with a muffler look more impressive).

How to choose a sound moderator for an air rifle
It is believed that the best sound moderators are produced by the British. An example is the products of the BSA Guns company, which places the main emphasis on strict control of production technology. All mufflers of this brand are distinguished by durability, quality and reliability.
Hatsan sound moderators are also popular, mainly due to their affordable cost. This Turkish brand cannot boast of a half-century history, but it regularly introduces innovative solutions and actively pushes out competitors in the niche of muffler production. Hatsan products are distinguished by their stylishness, thoughtful design and high technology.
When choosing a silencer for an air rifle, it is necessary to take into account the design features of the weapon. Here are some examples:
- Benjamin Discovery. The barrel diameter (outer) floats, so before purchasing a suppressor you need to take careful measurements with a caliper.
- Diana-350. The rifle is distinguished by the loud impact of the piston, blocking all other sounds. Once you install a moderator, you may think there is no difference. In fact, the operation of the muffler can be heard at a distance of 15-20 meters - and no less.
- RSR. Hunting rifles of this type are characterized by supersonic speeds and high overshoot. By adjusting these parameters, you can effectively suppress the sound of a shot.
Well suited. Muffler/Moderator Blaser
Silencers were originally designed for many things, but not for hunting. But recently, these devices have been adapted to the requirements of hunting and the wishes of hunters. The new sound moderator for the Blazer should fulfill some of the wishes determined by hunting practice.
The hunting silencer serves primarily to preserve the health of the hunter and the dog. As a rule, a positive side effect is a slight improvement in accuracy and a strong reduction or complete elimination of the muzzle flash. But at the same time, a weapon with a silencer does not look aesthetically pleasing. A suppressor increases the overall weight and length of the weapon. In addition, the position of the weapon’s center of gravity shifts. First of all, this negatively affects the wearing comfort, which becomes less comfortable. They are trying to compensate for this by using short barrels.
The additional weight of the muffler has to be tolerated. And when searching for and finishing wounded wounded animals, an open sight is used with it. It is much more durable than any red dot sight and will not become dirty to the point of being unusable. In addition, it can be used in any weather. It is clear that the dog owner would first of all want to use an open sight with the silencer screwed on. Typically this requires moving the front sight. But in most cases the silencer covers the front sight. In this case, the open sight becomes unusable. Often, even a high base of the front sight and rear sight is not enough. After this, all that remains is to use the red dot sight.
New Blaser R8 Professional Success Leather combination: short barrel, suppressor, open sights.
Everything is different in the new Blazer integrated solution - the R8 repeating rifle with a silencer-sound moderator. The weapon we tested, the R8 Professional Success Leather with a thick 520mm short barrel in .308 Winchester, has the front sight base moved back 15mm. In front of it on the muzzle there is an M17×1 thread.

The rectangular front sight with a white plastic insert is mounted on a 14.5 mm high base and is height adjustable. The rear sight has a roof-shaped shape and a rectangular slot. A wide white central stripe guides the eye to the middle. The height of the sighting line is exactly 3 mm higher than that of the author's R93. The R8 open sight can be used well even with the sound moderator screwed on. There is almost no contrast between the white stripe on the rear sight and the white front sight. Therefore, aiming vertically is difficult. It takes a long time, which is not conducive to a quick shot. Of course, at very close distances this does not play any role.
The muffler does not slide onto the barrel. This is not optimal for stability. Of course, at the same time it increases the length of the weapon by almost its full length. The moderator is 203.1 mm long and weighs 325 g. Its outer diameter is only 42.9 mm. The center hole for the .308 caliber is 8.6mm in diameter.
The moderator is offered for weapons in calibers 6.5 mm, .308 (bullet diameter 7.82 mm) and 9.3 mm. It extends the weapon by 188 mm. Thanks to the short bolt group of the R8, which has the trigger mechanism located under the magazine, the overall length of the tested weapon with a suppressor is only 1158 mm. Total weight is 3.94 kg; at the same time, it is noticeably increased by the thickened barrel of the Semi-Weight contour. The moderator is very light - 332 g.

The basis of the sound moderator is an aluminum housing; the internal part is made of titanium. Titanium provides high survivability. The ideal cleaning option is in an ultrasonic bath. But washing in oil also makes sense.
By its size alone, the moderator cannot be classified as a super-efficient muffler. Hearing protection is best provided by long, large-volume mufflers. For the .308 Winchester caliber, the Blazer results in a 27 decibel reduction in sound level. The result of the author’s measurement is 26 decibels. Thus, in the ear area, the sound pressure level is usually below the pain threshold - 130 decibels. The Blazer was at least a good compromise for all those who must or would like to use open sights.
The Blaser R8 Professional Success Leather model with a direct action bolt and manual mainspring is well known. Locking is carried out by lamellas forming a ring that withstands extreme pressures of powder gases. After detaching and reinstalling the barrel and optical sight, the position of the midpoint of impact is absolutely stable. The saddle-shaped bracket on the barrel has a low height. If the trigger assembly and magazine are separated, the weapon cannot be used. The excellent trigger releases without warning at 648g.
The R8 has a grippy forend. The stock's steep pistol neck with thumb hole promotes stable grip. A slightly raised cheekpiece with a straight comb, as well as a slight drop towards the nose of the stock, ensures optimal production. The firing behavior is pleasant, the muzzle bounce is insignificant.
With the muffler installed and all the equipment tested, the accuracy was better than without the muffler. The best dispersion diameters - 11 and 13 mm (five shots/100 m) speak for themselves. Without a muffler there were 24 and 25 mm. The position of the mid-point of impact without a suppressor was slightly different when changing equipment options. Basically, there was a shift to the right by 3.5 cm. Without a silencer, the average point of impact shifted upward by 4–6 cm, depending on the equipment option.
Even with a silencer installed, the shooter can use open sights. The muffler increases the overall length by 188 mm.
The ability to be used universally - with or without a scope - is great. You are armed for any occasion. The decrease in the sound of the shot is quite clearly felt. And it doesn’t matter that the muzzle of a barrel with a length of only 520 mm is very close to the ear. The moderator is an indispensable solution, but the Blaser R8 still remains comfortable to wear.

Sound moderator for an air rifle - design and subtleties of choice
- The listed qualities have turned sound moderators into a popular accessory among fans of air guns. Sound moderators are used by professional athletes and hunters, but you need to choose this device wisely.
How to make a muffler with your own hands
A simple drawing of a sound moderator for pneumatics
If you decide to save money on purchasing a sound moderator, you can easily make it yourself. To do this you will need a long tube (about 35 mm) and elastic padding. Any person with a drill at hand can cope with the manufacture of the gadget. The steps you will have to take are:
- Determining the diameter of the muffler. First, you will have to measure the capacity of the working chamber, then add a few millimeters to the calculations.
- Purchasing a muzzle. You go to the store and buy a muzzle (the color and shape don’t matter, the main thing is the design features). The muzzle consists of a plug and a thin-walled tube - this is your blank. An alternative blank is a printer cartridge (some craftsmen prefer this).
- Search for partitions. Coins, washers, tin plates, caps are perfect for this purpose - the main thing is that they fit together in diameter.
The washer fits perfectly, but if you cannot find it, you will have to drill a hole in the center of the disk. The diameter of the hole is adjusted to the weapon caliber (4.5 mm), but it is impossible to achieve such high accuracy on your own. Therefore, we recommend drilling with a small margin. - Grinding holes. After drilling a hole in the disk, grind it, getting rid of the slightest irregularities and burrs. The total number of washers that you will have to work on is 3-4 pieces.
- Pasting. The finished washers are covered with rubber. It is better to glue on both sides, but if this is not possible, on the side opposite to the flight of the bullet. “Moment” is considered the best glue for such work.
- Making holes. And again we make holes - this time in the rubber surface. The basic principle is the same - accuracy.
- Fixation of partitions. You have 3-4 completely finished partitions in your hands. Now they need to be secured in a hollow tube (cartridge or muzzle). To do this, you need to take a caliper, measure the length of the tube and sketch out a drawing on paper with the future location of the partitions.
- Taping the tube. The inner surface of the muzzle should also be covered with rubber. This is done in sections (in this case, you rely on the drawing made earlier). The first section is glued, then the washer is inserted. The second section is glued, the second washer is inserted. The rubber should fit into the joint, avoid gaps and carefully adjust the parts.
That's it, the sound moderator is ready. One problem is that this gadget looks rather nondescript. You will have to sand and polish the tube, then turn it and oil it. For this, stock up on GOI paste and polishing paste for jewelry. Finally, the design can be supplemented with heat-shrinkable tubing.
Review of a homemade sound moderator for an air rifle:
As you can see, a sound moderator is a useful thing, but when choosing a gadget you need to take many things into account. You can make such a toy at home, but this is an extreme case. It is better to purchase products from a trusted brand and go hunting calmly.
