History of creation

GAZ-3308 is a domestic truck that replaced the outdated GAZ-66 model, which became a real legend of the Soviet automobile industry. At the end of the last century, this car began to be supplied to the Russian army, where it proved its worth. However, the history of GAZ-3308 began long before that, in the mid-80s.

Engineers of the Gorky Automobile Plant, working on the creation and modernization of the GAZ-66, coped with a difficult task and designed a completely new car that meets all modern requirements. Thus, in the early 90s, the diesel GAZ-3308 was presented, which received many positive reviews and was ready for mass production. However, the economic crisis into which Russia plunged after the collapse of the USSR crossed out all the plans of the designers. Outdated models continued to roll off the assembly line, and the GAZ-3308 remained “to live” exclusively on the drawings.

Mass production

Despite the fact that all work on the modernization and assembly of the GAZ-3308 was completely frozen for ten years, the designers of the Gorky Automobile Plant decided to resume the assembly of new trucks. However, the lost time made itself felt. In order to launch the assembly line with new cars, it was necessary to revise the existing drawings and make significant changes to the design.

Thus, the GAZ-3308 received more powerful power units, became much more reliable and significantly increased cross-country ability. After all the formal procedures and tests of the model were completed, it was put on the assembly line. The first large order was made by the armed forces of the Russian Federation, which received the trucks already in 1997.

Design and scope of the car

Gas 33081 Jaeger is primarily designed to transport people and cargo off-road and on roads in different, even the harshest, climates. For these purposes, it was equipped with a two-row cabin. This is a high-cross-country vehicle that will work in any conditions.

To make the driver and passengers comfortable, the plant equipped the car with five passenger seats in two-door and four-door versions. The cabin is spacious and allows you to place your hand luggage inside, behind the front seat.

Demand and modernization

Having excellent characteristics, the GAZ-3308 has proven itself well while being in service with the Russian Armed Forces. The use of the truck for civilian purposes also showed that this model is significantly superior to its predecessor. At the beginning of the new millennium, it was decided to scrap all GAZ-66s, which were replaced by the more reliable and powerful GAZ-3308.

Since the beginning of production of the model, it has become quite popular in the CIS countries and neighboring countries, where it is actively used for both civilian and military purposes. For example, countries such as Belarus, Ukraine, Syria, and Kazakhstan purchased the GAZ-3308 for their armies.

In 2013, the Gorky Automobile Plant introduced the modernized GAZ-3308, called “Eager”. Under the hood of the updated truck, a more powerful engine that meets Euro-4 requirements is installed, and new safety equipment is used, making the vehicle even more reliable. The final stage of modernization of the GAZ-3308 took place in mid-2014. The truck received the ability to transport larger loads, as well as a new name - “Sadko NEXT”.

A significant amount of special equipment has been created based on various modifications of the GAZ-3308. These are a variety of lifts, cranes, tank trucks, fire trucks, paddy wagons, even vehicles for transporting hazardous substances and cargo. Even several off-road buses were created based on the Sadko all-wheel drive chassis.

Power unit

Today there are three options for installing the engine on the GAZ-3308:

  • diesel from the Minsk Automobile Plant;
  • diesel from the Yaroslavl Automobile Plant;
  • gasoline from the Zavolzhsky Automobile Plant.

It is worth noting that it is the gasoline version that has proven itself best, which is purchased by the vast majority of customers. It is equipped with an eight-cylinder carburetor-type gasoline engine. The engine is capable of producing 122 horsepower, which is enough for the truck to easily overcome difficult sections of the road, such as steep climbs.

Many motorists note that when fully loaded, the car becomes less controllable. However, if the load is distributed correctly, no problems should arise. It should also be noted that the diesel version, unlike the gasoline version, has less power.

The engine is mated to four- and five-speed manual transmissions. They also install a mechanical two-way transfer case with direct and reduction gears and drive on all axles. The clutch is dry, hydraulic. The built-in carburetor has a pair of chambers. The presence of a liquid heater allows you to maintain the optimal temperature of the mixture, preventing it from overheating.

The engine is equipped with liquid cooling, direct fuel injection and a turbocharging system with intermediate cooling of the charge air. This power unit fully meets all Euro-4 environmental standards. It is capable of producing 122.4 horsepower.

Starting in the winter of 2013 (February), manufacturers began to offer the power unit together with the Yaroslavl Motor Plant. It is represented by YaMZ-53442, which also meets Euro-4 environmental standards.

It also has an in-line four-cylinder arrangement with direct fuel injection and a turbocharging system, where there is intermediate cooling of the charge air. Its volume is slightly smaller - 4.43 liters, but it already produces 134.5 horses.

Transmission

MMZ D-245.7 is paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox , allowing the truck to accelerate to 93 kilometers per hour, while consuming about 16.8 liters per 100 kilometers. The YaMZ-53442 power unit comes with a 5-speed synchronized manual gearbox, where there is constant gear meshing.

A single disc dry clutch can also be seen . To overcome difficult areas, a 2-speed transfer case was provided, which can reduce the speed ratio from the power unit to the gearbox without loss of power.

Also in the car you can find the presence of a cross-axle differential with increased friction, which was borrowed from the 66th model.

It is precisely thanks to synchronization with the gearbox that high off-road performance is ensured.

For example, Sadko can overcome a climb, the slope of which will be up to 31 degrees along the horizon. It would not be superfluous to mention here the 315 mm ground clearance for the base model and 335 mm for the military versions.

Suspension

The vehicle was built on a two-axle frame platform with dependent leaf spring suspension at the front and rear, as well as longitudinal semi-elliptical springs, which are complemented by double-acting hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers on all wheels.

It was taken as a basis from the 66th model, but it was significantly improved. Thus, its carrying capacity increased by 500 kilograms, which in total reached 2,500 kilograms. Although, in our area it is customary to overload this (and not only) truck mercilessly.

Brake system

It is presented here as a dual-circuit type and is equipped with an ABS system. There is also a hydraulic drive, a hydraulic vacuum booster and a vacuum receiver on each circuit. Body

As can be seen in the photo, the GAZ-3308 has an all-metal body. The van's cabin is designed for two people, and its characteristics allow the installation of more than a hundred add-ons on the chassis. The immediate task of the model is to transport goods and people, but the truck can be upgraded to participate in rescue operations of various types. For example, a van is often used as a fire truck. Also, the GAZ-3308 can be re-equipped, turning the van into a real home on wheels. That is why many construction organizations choose this model.

Device

The growth in sales of GAZ-3302 indicates the popularity of the car. Moreover, the model itself is available today in two main versions: chassis and onboard version. The latter has already become a real bestseller in the segment of light-duty trucks. The affordable price makes the car more attractive compared to its competitors. However, the car is not without weaknesses.

The sides of the model's body are the main problem. In the first versions they had to be changed quite often. In rare cases they served for more than 10 years. In the latest modifications, the sides began to be primed, but this only saved it for a while. As a result, the metal had to be welded. The use of cathophoresis priming, double-sided galvanizing and phosphating of surfaces did not improve the situation.

The car is equipped with a spring-type suspension, the peculiarity of which is the presence of special telescopic shock absorbers. The design provides for the rear suspension to be equipped with a mechanism that reduces roll when cornering. The GAZ-3302 brake system includes drum and disc mechanisms. There is also a dual-circuit hydraulic drive with a pressure regulator.

The hydraulic booster is installed only on the latest modifications of the model. It is missing on older versions, which is a significant drawback. At the same time, the hydraulic booster itself causes a lot of criticism. Many car owners complain about regular leaks that recur over and over again even after the problems have been fixed. The reference mark is 10,000 km. If the hydraulic booster does not leak during this period, it will last for quite a long time.

The GAZ-3302 is equipped with a 5-speed gearbox, which also received a lot of critical reviews. Moreover, repairs usually give only a short-term effect, and the owner, who decides to save on replacing the gearbox, ends up spending much more money. True, for models released later than 2011, such problems are extremely rare.

The model has drum brakes at the rear and disc brakes at the front. This allows the driver not to worry about traffic safety, regardless of road conditions and speed.

But the handling of the GAZ-3302 leaves much to be desired. The car is made on a frame base and does not always clearly follow the driver’s commands. The model's suspension is designed for systematic cargo transportation.

Initially, the car was equipped with cabins that were not the best in terms of comfort. However, in recent modifications this element has changed a lot. Specialists from the Gorky Automobile Plant borrowed it from the light-duty Ford Transit, which added convenience. The GAZ-3302 cabin accommodates a driver and 2 passengers. The torpedo of the model immediately catches the eye, and an additional advantage is good visibility. Not the highest performance is compensated by safety.

Spare parts for cars are produced in large quantities, so finding them will not be difficult. However, the quality of the elements is not always high, since many enterprises produce them.

Features of GAZ-3302:

  • Lighting and electrical wiring in a car must be replaced every 10 years, as wires fall apart and circuit boards oxidize;
  • modifications before 2007 have a weak stove;
  • the GAZelle doors can be opened with a screwdriver;
  • the car has a weak frame;
  • the seats in older versions are not comfortable enough and cause some inconvenience even when traveling within the region;
  • in versions released later than 2011, many problems were fixed and there were much fewer complaints about them.
